Remedies For Seasickness

Remedies for Seasickness

Seasickness is basically the terrible effect that motion sickness has on your body. It is the result of your inner ear falling out of balance with the sudden new change in motion instability caused by the water. The effects of seasickness can be very unpleasant. When possible, it's best to try and stave off the major effects of seasickness before they kick in.

Preventative Action

If you are going on a cruise ship and fear the affects of ensuing sickness, be proactive and book a larger ship. Bigger ships are less susceptible to swaying back and forth in choppy waters. The larger the boat, the smoother the ride will feel.

Hydrate yourself in advance of the trip. Dehydration can enhance the effects of feeling seasick by lowering your body's resistance to motion sickness. Soft drinks and juice are not a substitute for water.

Booking a cabin as close to the middle of ship as you can will also provide the most stability. According to a January 21, 2009 article by Hugo Martin in the Los Angeles Times, Dr. John Bradberry, medical director at Carnival Cruise Lines, says the equivalent is sitting in the middle of a playground seesaw instead of at an end.

Over-the-Counter Cures

There are some over-the-counter, nonprescription medicines that will help keep seasickness at bay. These are meclizine and dimenhydrinate. They are sold under the names Antivert, Bonine, Meni-D and Antrizine, and Dramamine, Gravol and Vertirosan respectively. These drugs help restrict the mechanism that sends signals from the inner ear that causes the dizzy feeling. Take the medication several hours before actually boarding the boat, as it can take a couple of hours for it to kick in.

The Patch

Seasickness patches have become a common remedy amongst seagoers. They release a drug called scopolamine through the skin behind your ear. These patches release this drug in small doses over the course of several days, which limits nausea for extended periods of time. This drug has been tied to some negative side effects. According to the Los Angeles Times article, these are possible delusions and delirium for the elderly, and vision problems for those that get the medicine on their fingers and touch their eyes.

Alternative Solutions

Chewing ginger is something that is commonly thought to reduce nausea. However, scientific evidence is yet to be proven. Another popular nausea-fighting practice is wearing an acupressure bracelet. Dr. Malcolm Taw, an assistant clinical professor of East-West medicine at UCLA, says in the Los Angeles Times article that for this to really work, the "bracelet would have to be worn so tightly that it could cut off circulation."

A commonly suggested remedy is standing in the open air, taking deep breaths and focusing your eyes on the horizon to reduce nausea.

Eating and Drinking Tips

Drinking alcohol and eating greasy or spicy foods should be avoided while on board as they enhance nausea. The night before your trip to sea, do not drink excessively or eat a heavy meal. The natural side effects of a hangover will be increased when the effects of seasickness start to emerge.

South Beach Diet Guidelines

Designed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston, the South Beach Diet stresses the importance of avoiding simple sugars. While it is a low-carb diet, the South Beach Diet differs from others since it doesn't restrict carbs quite as heavily, but does restrict saturated fat due to its connection to heart disease and other health problems. The diet is broken into three phases.

Phases

The South Beach Diet is broken down into three phases. The first phase lasts only two weeks, and is meant to help you eliminate cravings and begin to lose weight. Instead of getting the recommended 45 to 65 percent of daily calories from carbohydrates, you get only about 10 percent.

The second phase is the long-term phase of the South Beach Diet. People who only have 10 pounds or less to lose are encouraged to skip phase one and start here. Carbs now account for about 27 percent of your daily calories.

Once you hit your goal weight, you are at phase three. You will continue to follow the eating philosophy that you learned in the first two phases. But, since this is about a lifetime of dietary decisions, you can include basically any food in moderation. About 28 percent of your daily calories are carbohydrates. If you happen to gain weight, you can go back to phase one.

Food Choices

Like some branded diet programs, the South Beach Diet comes with prepackaged foods that you can include in your daily menu. The South Beach Diet has its own snacks, and they also have a relationship with Kraft Foods, which labels some of its meals "South Beach Diet Recommended."

Prepackaged foods include everything from oven roasted turkey for lunch, to salsa, reduced fat cheeses and chicken breast strips. Snacks from South Beach Diet include cookies, cereal and meal replacement bars.

If you fancy yourself a bit of a chef, you can widen your culinary choices with some help from suggestions on the South Beach Diet plan. The company's website has recipes that fit in for each phase of the plan.

What to Expect

The first two weeks on the South Beach Diet are the toughest, which is when carbohydrates are most restricted. According to the diet, you will lose 8 to 13 pounds in the first two weeks. This is much higher than the traditional recommended weight loss rate of 1 to 2 lbs. a week. If you survive this phase, you are in good shape to make it to your goal weight.

While there isn't a great emphasis on exercise, the diet's creators recommend a daily walk of 20 minutes to boost metabolism.

Expert Insight

The South Beach Diet is centered around the Glycemic Index, which ranks carbohydrates according to how they affect blood glucose. According to the index, the lower the number, the better the food choice.

But, the experts are divided over its relevance. Some back the GI philosophy, while some, like a study at the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health, find that the Glycemic Index may not help people determine the foods that they should eat.

So, is the South Beach Diet worth your money? Much of the answer depends upon your personality. If you lack will-power and prefer guidance, you may want to sign up for the official diet. Otherwise, there is so much information available online that you can develop your own plan of attack based on the South Beach Diet approach.

Pilates Weight Ball Exercises

Many people have come to rely on Pilates for flexibility training and slimming down the body. Some don't realize that Pilates can also be an effective method for building strength. One simple way to add strength-training benefits to your Pilates exercise routine is to add a medicine ball. Although a medicine ball cannot be incorporated into every Pilates exercise, there are a wide variety that can be done with a weight ball.

Function

Pilates is a combination of mind and body exercises that focus on transforming not only the body but also the mind. The Pilates workout aims to build strength without adding bulk, which creates a slim and toned body. Pilates also aims to increase flexibility and develop strong core muscles. Adding a weight ball to your Pilates routine is an effective way of further strengthening your core and arm muscles. Weight balls, or medicine balls, are durable weighted balls that can be added to nearly any exercise routine.

Exercises

To develop and strengthen your core and abdominal muscles, lie with your back flat on the floor. Bend your knees, then extend the right leg against the floor. Extend your hands above your head, keeping your arms bent at the elbows. Hold the medicine ball in your hands. Slowly, contract your abdominals and roll up into a crunch position. At the same time, bring your arms forward and raise your right leg toward the ceiling. Hold in this crunched position for 1 or 2 seconds, then return to starting position. Repeat 10 to 15 times, then switch legs and repeat 10 to 15 times with the left leg.

Pilates is an effective method of whittling your abdominal muscles and toning your obliques. To begin, lie with your back flat against the floor. Raise your legs and bend your knees; your knees should be pointing to the ceiling and your calves should be parallel to the floor. Hold the medicine ball between your knees. Slowly lower your legs to the left, keeping the medicine ball held tight between your knees. Hold for 1 or 2 seconds, and then lift your legs back to starting position. Then, slowly lower your legs to the right and hold for 1 or 2 seconds. Repeat 10 to 15 times.

For an effective Pilates exercise that uses the leg and arm muscles, do the one-leg squat. Begin in a standing position with your arms extended in front of you; hold the medicine ball in your hands. Slowly bend your knees into a squatting position. Your thighs should be parallel to the ground (or as close as possible). Hold for 5 seconds and return to a standing position. To make this Pilates exercise more difficult, add a leg raise. As you are lowering into a squatting position, lift the right leg and extend it in front of you. You should be balancing on your left foot in the squat position. Hold for 5 seconds, then return to starting position and repeat with the other leg.

Peach Tree Benefits

The peach tree probably originated in China.

Peaches first appeared thousands of years ago, most likely originating in China. They were probably the first benefits derived from the peach tree (Prunus persica). The peach tree is a medium-sized tree, growing up to 25 feet in height with a spread of about 15 feet or more. This tree does best in well-drained, moist soil and sunny conditions. Its seeds are another benefit, producing more peach trees when planted.

Culinary Benefits

Enjoy peaches fresh, in desserts and as entrees, too.

Historians believe that French explorers introduced peach trees to America in the 16th century, and that native American tribes continued the tradition of planting them. The fast-growing trees produced abundant fresh fruits. Peaches are a delicious and healthy food benefit, with velvety yellow skin and sweet, whitish-yellow fruit flesh. They are favorites as fresh fruit and in many dessert and other recipes worldwide.

Health Benefits

According to India4Indians.com, peaches promote healthy skin. They are a source of dietary fiber, containing more than 80-percent water. Peaches are also a source of vitamins A and C, potassium and fiber, according to the University of Ohio horticulture website. They have laxative and diuretic effects, advantageous to those suffering from rheumatism and gout. Researchers also point to antioxidant properties in peaches.

Beauty, Joy and Longevity

The peach blossom has a long history in Chinese and Vietnamese cultures.

The Chinese count beauty, joy and longevity among the benefits of the ornamental peach blossom tree. This graceful tree of delicate, springtime pink blossoms is central to the lunar new year celebrations that usually take place in January or February. Families and business owners alike attend the customary flower fairs in cities like Hong Kong to select suitable peach blossom trees for their homes or offices. This is important to attract good fortune in the year ahead. A tree flowering at the start of the new year is an especially auspicious sign. Also according to Chinese tradition, the peach represents longevity and is prominent at birthday and anniversary celebrations for family elders.

Warding Off Evil

Similar traditions exist in north Vietnam where the new year or Tet celebrations also include the peach blossom tree. Legend has it that in the Soc Son mountains of north Vietnam, there exists a giant peach tree, the home of two powerful gods named Tra and Uat Luy. The gods protect the people of the area from evil spirits, except for a time after the lunar new year when they have to meet with the Jade Emperor in heaven. The evil spirits could take advantage of this lapse, but the people thought of a solution: they display peach tree branches in their homes, and so ward off the evil---a definite benefit. So began the custom of peach trees in north Vietnamese homes and offices at the Tet season.

Chronic Lyme Disease Explanation

Tick Bite

Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. Although it is generally easily treated with antibiotics, it can become a chronic disease and lead to life-long symptoms and complications if not diagnosed or treated in the early stages.

Causes

Aside from lack of proper treatment, Lyme disease can also become chronic when antibiotic regimens are not completed, allowing some of the bacteria to remain alive and continue to infect the patient.

Complications

Chronic Lyme disease can cause stiffness in the neck and jaw, numbing sensations, chronic fatigue and neurological disorders. The CDC also estimates that 60 percent of those with untreated infections will develop arthritis.

Treatment

Long-term antibiotic treatments aimed at destroying the bacteria are not recommended, according to studies performed by the CDC. Symptoms can be treated with prescription or over-the-counter medications.

Prevention

The CDC recommends protecting yourself from tick bites by wearing long sleeves and checking for ticks before coming indoors. If you suspect exposure, seek medical attention and follow the recommended antibiotic treatment.

Considerations

In some cases, patients may be misdiagnosed with chronic Lyme disease based on symptoms and not actual evidence of infection, according to the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases.

Tumor Cell Apoptosis

Apoptosis is a specific type of cell death. While cells can be killed when they are either damaged or exposed to toxic agents, apoptosis is programmed cell death that usually occurs to the benefit of the organism as a whole. There are a number of specific reasons why apoptosis occurs, and a variety of set metabolic pathways that set it in motion. Tumor cells are characterized by their ability to bypass apoptosis, which is why cancer medications that induce tumor cell apoptosis are a major focus of cancer treatment research.

Definition

Apoptosis is a metabolic pathway that, if triggered by certain circumstances, will cause a cell to begin a series of actions that will result in its own death. Also known as PCD, or programmed cell death, a cell that is induced into apoptosis will shrink in size, develop abnormal bubbles in its cell membrane, then degrade its own DNA and organelles. Certain phospholipid compounds are exposed on the surfaces of the cell fragments that are then disposed of by white blood cells responsible for ridding the body of bacteria and foreign particles. Apoptosis is a normal part of any organism's life cycle and occurs for a number of reasons.

Reasons

Apoptosis is beneficial to an organism. It occurs for two main reasons: as a regular part of development and as a way to prevent potentially harmful cells from hurting the organism as a whole. During development, apoptosis occurs regularly in the formation of certain intricate portions of the body, for example in the development of the fingers and toes. Additionally, cells that have become infected with viruses or have damage to their DNA are regularly triggered to begin apoptosis.

Procedure

A cell is triggered into apoptosis by two things: a decrease in the amount of positive growth factors it receives from other cells and an increase in the number of cell death-activating molecules that bind to its cellular membrane. These death activators include lymphotoxin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, both of which work to trigger apoptosis.

Absence of Apoptosis in Tumor Cells

One of the most dangerous aspects of cancer is when the cells contained within tumors have abnormalities that prevent these cells that would normally be triggered into programmed cell death from going into apoptosis. This allows these cells to continue to grow and hinder the proper function of the systems and organs they are infiltrating. Both cancers known to be caused by viruses (such as HPV, or the human papillloma virus) and other, nonviral, cancers have developed ways to prevent cell apoptosis.

Apoptosis-Inducing Tumor Treatments

A number of cancer treatments center on triggering previously apoptosis-resistant tumor cells into entering programmed cell death. Both radiation therapy and chemotherapy are effective in causing apoptosis in certain types of cancers. Tumor cells resistant to these types of therapy -- such as certain types of leukemia -- have been found to respond to specially developed apoptosis-inducing compounds.

Which Foods Contain Vitamin K

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is important for blood coagulation or clotting. Although vitamin K is produced by the body, the fat cells that store vitamins store little vitamin K. Eating a diet rich in vitamin K is important for healthy blood function.

Types

Vitamin K is found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, cabbage, green-leaf lettuce and broccoli. Other sources of vitamin K are green tea and cereals.

Recommended Intake

Doctors recommend the following daily intake of vitamin K: Infants need 2.5 mcg; children ages 1 to 3 require 30 mcg; children ages 4 to 8 should get 55 mcg; children ages 9 to 13 need 60 mcg; children ages 14 to 18 should have 75 mcg; and adult males and females need 120 mcg 90 mcg, respectively.

Considerations

In adults, a vitamin K deficiency is rare. However, signs of a deficiency are easy bruising, blood in urine or stool, nosebleeds or excessive menstrual bleeding. A medical professional can diagnose if it is indeed a vitamin K deficiency.

Expert Insight

Scientists have recently found a direct link between inadequate vitamin K intake and osteoporosis.

Warning

Patients who take Warfarin or Coumadin should not exceed between 90 to 120 mcg of vitamin K daily as it may interfere with the medicine's effectiveness.

What Is The Basic Function Of The Immune System

The body can be a well-oiled machine under the right circumstances. One of the criteria for a healthy body is a strong immune system. A healthy immune system allows the body to fight infections and ultimately increase the quality of life. There are measures that support a sound immune system.

Warning

The immune system can break down or become weak for a variety of reasons. The lack of sleep and continuous fatigue will lead to problems with the immune system. Diets that lack the daily allowance of vitamins affect the immune system. Stress is a huge factor when it comes to building a better immune system. Continuous stress weakens the body's ability to fight off bacteria.

Benefits

Healthy immune systems can produce many types of positive affects. People who lead healthy lifestyles that encourage strong immune systems have fewer sick days at work. Pathogens that attack the immune system are found everywhere from phones to shopping cart handles. Starting out with a fit immune system along with practicing universal precautions with hand cleansing will decrease the chance of attacks to the body's immune system.

History

Early scientists saw what was later called the immune system as early as 400 BC. When people became ill, they could subsequently treat someone with the same illness without becoming sick. Later, Louis Pasteur was a pioneer in treating diseases through the creation of vaccines.

Types

The immune system can break down in several ways. An immunodeficiency occurs when the immune system loses the ability to fight pathogens. This is largely caused by the decrease in killer T cells. Autoimmunity occurs when the immune system loses the ability to differentiate between good and bad cells. This leads to the body attacking itself. Autoimmunity manifests itself in diseases like type I diabetes, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. When the immune system has a hypersensitivity, it overreacts to certain stimuli. This takes the form of allergies.

Expert Insight

Paul Ehrlich made significant discoveries in the area of immunology. His study led to a Nobel Prize and is the foundation for the basic understanding of cellular makeup that exists today. Ehrlich once made the controversial statement in 1970 that, "In ten years all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish." Much of what is known about immunology has only occurred within the 19th century with Ehrlich and Elie Metchnikoff.

Get Rid Of A Lone Star Tick

Ticks are parasites that that try to feed off the blood of your pets. They can transmit diseases, so they can be dangerous. A Lone Star tick is best removed in the same manner as any other tick. All ticks have barbed mouth parts, and these can remain embedded and lead to infection if the tick is not removed correctly. All ticks should be removed as soon as possible, as this lessens the risk of disease transmission.

Instructions

1. Put on gloves. If you have no gloves or tweezers, place a tissue or a piece of cloth over your fingers to grasp the tick -- never touch a tick with your bare hands

2. Clean the area around the tick with antiseptic or soap and water.

3. Grasp the tick firmly close to the head, not by the body. Do not squeeze the tick because squeezing the body may cause it to expel its stomach contents into the bite wound.

4. Pull the tick slowly straight out and away from the skin -- do not jerk it out, because this can leave mouth parts behind.

5. When the tick releases, dispose of it immediately by sticking it to a piece of tape or put it in a jar of rubbing alcohol. If you want to have it identified, drop it into a small jar of alcohol and take it to your veterinarian.

6. Inspect the bite wound closely and remove any remaining tick parts as you would a splinter.

7. Wash the bite with soap and water, apply antiseptic and cover it with a bandage.

8. Check the rest of your skin closely for tiny, pinhead-sized ticks and remove these by pressing sticky tape onto them.

9. If you did not wear gloves, wash your hands thoroughly.

10. Mark the date of the tick bite on your calendar.

11. See a physician if the wound does not heal cleanly or you have flu-like symptoms or a rash at the bite site within two months of the bite.

Does The Atkins Diet Really Work

The Atkins Diet rose to popularity in the 1990s and may be the most famous "fad diet" in the United States today. Followers like it because it allows you to eat as much as you would like, provided you avoid carbohydrates and fried foods. While questions remain about its long-term side effects, it has indeed proven to help people lose weight and feel healthier in the short term.

The Basics

The Atkins Diet is the brainchild of the late Dr. Robert Atkins, a physician and cardiologist who invented the plan in an effort to lose weight himself. It emphasizes protein and fat intake, as well as low-starch vegetables, and keeps carb intake at an absolute minimum. For instance, dieters on the Atkins plan might have a bacon cheeseburger with mayonnaise and mustard for lunch, but not eat the carb-enriched bun. Steak and bacon would be fine for dinner, as long as the meal is not complemented with a baked potato. Sugars and caffeine are almost entirely forbidden as well.

The Theories

Supporters of the Atkins approach insist foods on the diet help burn calories, as the restriction of carbs is said to switch the body from burning glucose to burning stored body fat. The first two weeks of the diet, known as the "induction phase," are said to be the toughest as the body adapts to the change. Many followers report a lack of energy and headaches during the initial two weeks. These side effects are replaced by weight loss in the ensuing phases and according to disciples, improved mood and vigor.

The Pros

Most studies have shown that, if followed properly, the Atkins Diet will indeed result in weight loss and increased energy levels. And while it does not permit you to eat unlimited amounts of fat (sensible servings are strongly encouraged in his book), most of the foods on the Atkins menu do taste good and can be eaten freely without feelings of guilt. Also, after the induction phase, you can slowly begin to incorporate a limited amount of carbs back into the diet.

The Cons

Since the Atkins Diet eliminates fruit and other high-fiber foods such as bread and pasta, many devotees can experience side effects such as constipation or even dizziness. Some doctors have also expressed concern over the long-term effects of a diet that allows a high intake of fat, particularly when it comes to heart disease. On top of all that, eliminating carbohydrates severely limits food choices, making eggs, meats or poultry the centerpiece of practically every meal.

The Results

When it comes to weight loss, the Atkins Diet has been proven to help users shed pounds---sometimes quickly---if followed properly. People in the induction phase have been said to lose as many as 10 lbs. in two weeks. According to plan, that will slow to 1 to 3 lbs. per week in ongoing stages.

Chiropractic Relief For Dizziness

In "Dizzy: What You Need to Know About Managing and Treating Balance Disorders," Jack J. Wazen and Deborah Mitchell explore the many different causes and treatments for vertigo or dizziness including the causes and treatments for cervical vertigo. Wazen and Mitchell explain that cervical vertigo is caused by a injury to the neck or whiplash and is characterized by a misalignment of the cervical vertebrae that interrupt the signals traveling to your brain, skin, joints, and muscles and cause dizziness. Chiropractic treatments offer you relief for cervical vertigo symptoms.

Vertebrae Manipulation

In "Doctor Yourself: Natural Healing That Works," Andrew W. Saul explains that chiropractic adjustment of the upper cervical neck vertebrae can provide dizziness relief. A chiropractor can manipulate the two top vertebrae, the atlas and the axis, to help reduce instances of dizziness. In "Principles and Practice of Chiropractic," Scott Haldeman explains that many people have reported relief from dizziness after spinal manipulation therapy. The chiropractor will have to rotate your neck to determine if you experience dizziness upon neck rotation and then will manipulate your cervical vertebrae in an effort to diminish issues with vertigo and dizziness.

Treatment

In an article appearing online in The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, entitled "Cervicogenic Vertigo: A Report of Three Cases," Pierre Côté, Silvano A Mior, and Don Fitz-Ritson, from the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, Canada, outline a treatment regimen for cervical vertigo. The chiropractor will have an initial visit with you to get your medical history, to discuss your symptoms, and to diagnose your condition. He may order x-rays or an MRI to get a look at your cervical vertebrae to spot any potential compressions of the bones and discs that might be the cause of your vertigo. The chiropractor will also conduct range of motion tests by having you seat yourself in a swiveling stool, mobilizing your head, and having you move your body to the left and right to see if the vertigo can be reproduced.

If you are diagnosed with cervical vertigo, you may require one or more treatments involving spinal manipulation of the C1, C2, and C3 vertebrae in your neck: the first three bones in your neck beneath the base of your skull. The chiropractor may also use massage and soft tissue manipulation to alleviate any muscular tension associated with your compressed vertebrae, which can contribute to dizziness and vertigo.

Exercises

The chiropractor will instruct you about stretching, strengthening, and range of motion exercises to increase your neck's mobility and diminish issues with dizziness. Perform the exercises as instructed daily to improve your condition. You may also be advised about Vestibular Habituation Training, which helps you to become accustomed to the sense of imbalance you feel when you are in motion. This type of exercise involves sitting on the edge of a bed and leaning your body roughly 30 degrees into the direction that you first start to experience vertigo. You will hold that position for a period of 30 seconds and return to your normal sitting posture; the exercise is conducted five to ten times daily for 21 days, and vertigo relief is gradual when the exercises are performed.

Help For Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common digestive disorder that affects the intestines. If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, gas and mucus discharge from the rectum may occur on a daily basis. IBS isn't a serious digestive disorder, and most cases are manageable with home remedies. But before you can gain relief, you'll need recognize factors that trigger symptoms.

Stay Away From Milk Products

An infinite number of factors can bring on irritable bowel syndrome. It's often difficult to pinpoint triggers. Milk products such as ice cream and cheese are likely triggers, and avoiding these foods may improve symptoms or prevent future episodes. Experiment with lactose-free products and digestive enzymes.

Fiber-Fueled Bowels

Having fewer than three bowel movements a week can cause a host of digestive complications such as abdominal bloating, pain and gas. Since constipation is a common symptom of IBS, increasing your fiber intake may help your condition and promote regular movements. Consume 20 to 35 grams of fiber a day. Eat fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, whole grains and fruits, or take fiber supplements. Some yogurts such as Activa include active cultures to promote a healthy digestive tract and ease symptoms.

Stimulate Intestinal Contractions

Regular exercise is proven to treat constipation associated with IBS. Constipation often results from decreased intestinal contractions. Being active stimulates these contractions. In turn, fecal matter quickly moves through the intestinal tract, alleviating constipation.

Monitor Food Intake

Like most digestive or chronic stomach ailments, diet plays a huge role. Eating too much fiber (more than 35 grams a day) can bring on symptoms. Consumption of certain foods and beverages are likely to aggravate the condition. These include spicy foods, fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine and artificial-sweeteners.

Managing Diarrhea

Loose stools are also common with IBS, and the exact cause of diarrhea varies. However, stress and the consumption of dairy products are primary culprits. Take an OTC anti-diarrheal medication to stop loose stools. In the case of chronic diarrhea, consider natural remedies such as removing certain foods from your diet and learning deal with stress. Stress and anxiety can speed intestinal contractions, which results in runny stools. If dealing with diarrhea, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

Seek Medical Attention

The condition can mimic other digestive conditions such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. If symptoms appear suddenly and do not improve with natural or home remedies within one week, seek medical attention to rule out other conditions. Severe cramping, chronic bloating and rectal bleeding may signal a more serious ailment.

Chiropractic Care For A Pinched Nerve

In chiropractic treatment, a pinched nerve is a subluxation or misalignment of the spine that causes nerve irritation or pressure. It is one of the most common causes of neck and back pain. Pain, soreness, numbness, a burning sensation and a tingling feeling in the back, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, legs, or feet are signs of a pinched nerve. Chiropractic care for a pinched nerve is one of the most effective treatments because it focuses on spinal adjustments to promote healing.

How a Pinched Nerve Occurs

A pinched nerve refers to the nerve that runs along the back vertebrae. It occurs when the nerve gets stretched, compressed, or constricted due to a fall, back injury, bone spurs, or other trauma to the spine. The severity of a pinched nerve depends on the extent of the misalignment of the vertebrae. Any amount of spine misalignment interrupts the ability of nerve impulses to communicate with the body's organs, tissues and cells. As a result, pain or discomfort occurs.

Any nerve in the body can become pinched, but the neck and back are most common. Everyday movements, such as walking or standing with poor posture, twisting or turning the body awkwardly, or turning too quickly can cause a pinched nerve.

How Chiropractic Care Helps Pinched Nerves

While traditional medical care treats the area where pain is evident, chiropractic looks at the whole body. This approach is especially useful with a pinched nerve since pain might be present in the leg, but the injury stems from the back. Chiropractic care also takes into consideration an individual's overall well-being and addresses issues that might have led to the pinched nerve.

Chiropractic care helps pinched nerves by reducing constriction of the nerve and relaxing tight muscles in the affected area that is causing pain and inflammation. This is done through a spinal adjustment, in which the chiropractor uses his hands to apply direct pressure to the pinched nerve. There may be several pressure points that the chiropractor will work on by moving his hands in precise directions.

What the Chiropractor Will Do

In determining chiropractic care for a pinched nerve, the chiropractor begins with a medical history, including physical activity that might cause back trauma. A combination of orthopedic, kinesiological, spinal, neurological and physical exams is used to determine the location of the pinched nerve. Other laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging may be prescribed to help with the diagnosis of the problem.

After identifying the cause of the pinched nerve, the chiropractor maps out a spinal pattern where spinal adjustments will be made. There are several treatment avenues the chiropractor may take. If the pinched nerve is the result of a subluxation, an overall spinal adjustment will relieve pressure from the nerve. For pinched nerves caused by tight muscles, a spinal adjustment to the specific area is done. Pinched nerves caused by a traumatic injury may be addressed with a combination of treatments, including spinal adjustments along with a flexing table that provides traction to the spine during the adjustment.

Often times, patients begin feeling immediate relief after the first visit, but additional spinal adjustments may be needed to completely correct the misalignment, enhance nerve and joint function and promote healing of the pinched nerve. If a course of spinal adjustments over three to six visits is ineffective in treating the pinched nerve, the chiropractor may incorporate other treatments, such as a back brace, soft tissue therapy, traction, functional electrical stimulation and physical therapy.

If the pinched nerve is in an area that gets a lot of work as a result of daily activities, the chiropractor is likely to establish a schedule of preventive visits and strength training exercises. Besides correcting problems, spinal adjustments help in maintaining the health of your body.

Repel Mosquitoes Naturally

Nothing ruins a lovely summer evening faster than being attacked by hungry mosquitoes. However, the chemicals found in store-bought mosquito repellents have been linked to many side effects and are considered by some to be dangerous. Follow these steps and you can repel those nasty mosquitoes in a natural and organic way.

Instructions

Create a Natural Repellent Spray With Essential Oils

1. Start by pouring 10 ounces of rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, vodka or olive oil into an empty plastic spray bottle.

2. Add 1 ounce of any of the following essential oils: castor, cedar, celery extract, clove, citronella, geranium, lemon eucalyptus, fennel, lavender, lemon grass, peppermint, rosemary, soybean, thyme or tea tree oil.

3. Mix well and store in a spray bottle. You can spray this on your skin, or the walls of room with mosquito infestation.

Make a Repellent Spray with Catnip

4. Grow the perennial herb Nepeta catari in a sunny part of your garden, or buy them from a vendor.

5. Rinse 2 cups of the stemmed catnip and then gently roll the catnip with a rolling pin.

6. Put the rolled catnip in a jar and cover it with 3 cups of vinegar. Seal the jar and store for 2 weeks in a dark place, shaking the jar daily.

7. Filter the liquid out of the jar into a spray bottle and keep refrigerated.

Try Other Natural Repellent Methods

8. Plant natural mosquito repellents like marigolds and Thai lemon grass around your home. Studies say that these work better than citronella.

9. Get a bat. If you build or buy a bat house, a bat may take up residence and start killing off thousands of mosquitoes every night.

10. Try mosquito repellent candles. There are many kinds of candles that burn citronella or other essential oils that ward off mosquitoes.

Chinese Medicine Information

Chinese Medicine Information

Chinese medical practices began in antiquity. Modern Chinese medical practices are the result of millenia of study that focuses on manipulation of the chi. The chi, or qi, is the life force present in all living things. Most Chinese medical techniques are based on treating a chi that is either too hot or too cold or treating a chi blockage on one of your body's meridians, or the paths through which the chi flows. The goal of Chinese medicine is to bring the balance between yin and yang back to the chi.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

The Chinese medical technique best known in the west is acupuncture and its acupressure variant. Acupuncture is the practice of manipulating the flow of chi energy along the body's meridians. Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of conditions caused by chi blockages on those meridians. By carefully placing a fine needle in the skin on one of the meridians, a chi blockage can be removed or chi energy can be re-routed on a different meridian to help heal a particular condition. Although there are nine acupuncture needles, only six are in common use today. The needles are different lengths and widths and have different-shaped points. Each needle is designed to have a different effect on the chi.

Acupressure achieves similar results without the use of needles. By either increasing or relieving pressure at a particular point on a meridian, acupressure can help to achieve a healthy balance in your chi.

Herbs

The origins of Chinese herbal medicine are reputed to date back to the mythical Yellow Emperor. Although herbs also focus on achieving a balance in the heat of your chi, there are several classifications of herbs specifically thought to be nourishing, create a correct constitution and be good for ridding the body of disease. These herbs are referred to as Superior, Middle and Lower herbs, respectively.

Gua Sha

A traditional Chinese therapy that is still not well known in the west is gua sha. In Chinese, gua means to scrape or scratch. Sha refers to a reddish patch of skin. Gua sha frees the flow of blocked chi in the body, and is often done over acupuncture points and along meridians. A gua sha treatment was traditionally done by scraping a jade scraper across the skin until the capillaries burst, thus releasing toxins that affect the flow of chi in the body. Although a few practitioners still use jade, most modern practitioners use a scraper made from cow horn or bamboo. The skin being scraped is lubricated with a medicinal oil. In places where there are no problems, the skin remains unchanged. In areas with minor problems, the skin turns red. In areas with high levels of toxins or major chi blockages, the skin appears purplish and bruised.

Cupping

Cupping is, in some ways, similar to gua sha. Both practices involve the movement and release of blood. With modern cupping treatments, a cupping jar is placed over an trouble area of the chi, usually an acupuncture point or a meridian. A partial vacuum is created in the jar, usually using heat, which draws the skin and flesh under the cup upward. Blood is under the cup. The skin turns color. In cases of mild problems, the skin is red. In cases of extreme problems or high toxin levels, the skin can turn purple like a bruise.

Dietary Medicine

Chinese dietary medicine is a way of helping improve chi flow along meridians by balancing a chi that is too hot or too cold. If you have a chi that is too hot, it can affect liver function and thus contribute to a number of conditions, including indigestion and stomach trouble. Upon a diagnosis of a hot chi, a Chinese doctor will recommend foods that will cool the chi, and recommend avoiding certain foods that warm the chi. If you have a chi that is too cold, the doctor will recommend the opposite. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe herbs that are to be cooked slowly with a chicken. The herbs bind with the chicken fat, and are thought to absorb better into the body.

How Does Smoking Cause Yellow Teeth

Risks of Smoking

Smoking is a highly addictive habit that many people find hard to kick. In spite of this and the awareness that smoking causes cancer and contributes to lung disease, people continue to smoke. What is not always associated with smoking is periodontal disease, oral cancer or the way that it affects your teeth. Smoking cigarettes, pipes and cigars will effectively stain and yellow your teeth within a short amount of time.

Poisonous Chemicals

The components that make up smoking products include ammonia, hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide. There are other poisonous chemicals too, like nicotine and tar. When a cigarette is lit, these substances are now burning, which changes their chemical properties. The smoker inhales and smoke passes through her mouth, leaving sticky residue on her teeth. Even with one inhalation of cigarette smoke, stains are left behind.

Residual Build-Up

Some brands of cigarettes contain more nicotine and tar than others. The higher the ratio of nicotine and tar, the more your teeth will be stained by the cigarette. The other thing to consider is that if your teeth are yellowed this way by cigarettes, there must be the same kind of residual build-up happening in your lungs.

A Simple Experiment

A simple experiment allows smokers to better understand how cigarettes yellow and darken their teeth. If you blow smoke onto a white napkin or tissue, you will see a yellow-brown stain where the smoke was blown. This is the same thing that happens with your teeth when you smoke. The more that you smoke, the more build-up there is. For people who have smoked for many years, the build-up is impossible to get rid of.

Tar

Tar can be blamed for the residual buildup in a smoker's mouth, airway and lungs. As this resin builds up in a smoker's body, it causes normal, healthy tissue to breakdown over time. It is highly poisonous and, when combined with nicotine, the greatest factor of why smoking causes yellow teeth.

Smoker's Toothpaste

Although there are toothpastes geared towards helping smokers have white teeth, few of these brands offer significant results. Even if a smoker is diligent about brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist regularly, his teeth will stain, darken and become yellowed.

Visits to the Dentist

While most smokers are not good about seeing the dentist regularly, those who do might ask for special tooth-whitening products or an in-office bleaching treatment. Sadly, unless the smoker is willing to kick the habit, none of these treatments are effective over the long term. For those who have crowns, bridges or other types of false teeth and implants, cigarettes yellow and darken their dental work too.

The Difference Between Upward Feedback & 360 Degree Feedback

Giving appropriate feedback can help managers and employees be more efficient.

In the 1980s, a movement started that focused on evaluation of employees and managers for strengths and productivity. Prior to that period, no specific technique was being used. Both managers and employees are evaluated on their performance and productivity through evaluation methods such as upward feedback and 360 degree feedback.

Upward Assessments

Many organizations use upward feedback as a type of manager assessment. This method of evaluation is only applicable to managers who have three or more direct reports. The minimum number of reports allows for a variation of the views about the manager's performance and gives a more complete portrait of the situation.

In an upward assessment, a manager's direct reports fill out surveys that ask questions regarding the person's performance. The data is analyzed with the help of a consultant, who might be external. The consultant corrects misunderstandings, focuses the manager's attention on interpretation rather than blame and then guides the conversation toward actionable improvement steps.

Generally, managers should receive upward assessments at least every four years to allow for tracking of improvements and milestones and ensure other issues have not crept up.

360 Degree Feedback

The 360 degree evaluation method is a multi-rater feedback method that gathers information from a person's subordinates, colleagues and managers about the person's management style and performance. Normally, 360 degree feedback is for professional development purposes and not as part of a performance appraisal.

The 360 degree feedback is best when all members of the same team are participating. When a whole team goes through the evaluation process, the manager is also required to take part and be an example to follow.

Similarities

An outside consultant can help with both upward and 360 degree feedback. An outside consultant minimizes personal friction and gives participants the guidance to plan for activities to work on areas of improvement. With both types of feedback, the individual creates a plan to improve on areas of concern and implements milestones to track his progress.

Differences

While upward feedback is applicable only to managers with multiple direct reports, 360 degree feedback works for anyone in a team or organization. Also, upward feedback is a specific method that can become a single component of a 360 degree evaluation. The 360 degree feedback can be done using a variety of methods and tools which are not all applicable to upward feedback.

Chinese Herbs For Progesterone

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on the belief that the body has a balance of two opposite forces: yin and yang. There are over 2,000 Chinese herbs in use; most come in the form of pills, capsules and powders.

History

According to the Mayo Clinic, TCM is a medical system based on the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism. Good health is achieved by maintaining a balance of yin and yang.

Definition of Progesterone

The female body produces progesterone in the ovaries. It is a hormone that is necessary for proper uterine function and breast development.

Chinese Herbs Used

According to Dr. Maoshing Ni, in his book "Second Spring," chasteberry acts on the pituitary gland and stimulates balanced hormonal function. Kelp is used to counterbalance estrogen by stimulating progesterone to a normal level.

How Used

According to the Mayo Clinic, the US generally uses components of Chinese herbs in isolation. However, in China most herbs are used in combination and may also be used with additional treatments such as acupuncture, massage and qi gong.

Warnings

Chinese herbs can be powerful, reports the Mayo Clinic, and should be approached with knowledge and caution. Before adding a new herb to your health plan you should consult with a qualified health care provider.

Test For Bladder Cancer

Test for Bladder Cancer

There are several techniques doctors use when testing for bladder cancer. Tests will also indicate the stage of the cancer. The first warning sign of the disease is usually blood in the urine. The blood may even change the color of your urine to a pale yellowish-red or a darker red. Some people may not notice the blood in their urine, but small amounts will show up during testing.

Instructions

1. Give your doctor a complete medical history to see if you are at risk for bladder cancer or are experiencing symptoms. If the doctor suspects cancer, she will perform a physical examination, checking out the rectum and vagina to feel for a tumor.

2. Submit a urine sample so it can be examined under a microscope during what's called a urine cytology. This procedure will turn up cancerous or precancerous cells. In addition, a urine culture will rule out an infection, which can cause the same symptoms as bladder cancer.

3. Expect your doctor to recommend a cystoscopy if he suspects bladder cancer. A urologist, who is a specialist in the urinary system, will perform the procedure in his office or the operating room. He will insert a flexible fiber optic tube with a light and a lens into your bladder, by way of the urethra.

4. Accept local anesthetic for a cystoscopy; it will numb your bladder. If the doctor opts to use a spinal or general anesthesia, know that you have to go to an operating room.

5. Allow the doctor to do fluorescence cystoscopy while he's doing the routine cystoscopy. He will put substances called porphyrins into the bladder because they cling to cancer cells. When he shines a blue light through the cystoscope, the cells with porphyrins will glow, indicating where the cancer cells are located.

6. Get a biopsy if the bladder looks abnormal or if there is a growth present. The piece of tissue will be examined with a microscope. The test will determine how much the cancer has progressed and how deeply it has penetrated the bladder wall, important factors in determining a treatment plan.

7. Know that your doctor may do bladder washings during the cystoscopy to look for cancer cells. He will put a salt solution into your bladder through a tube, then remove it for testing.

How Tell A Herkimer Diamond From Clear Quartz

Telling a Herkimer diamond from ordinary quartz can be a rocky process.

Herkimimer diamonds are not diamonds at all; they are quartz crystals that are set apart from other stones by a set of parameters that apply solely to Herkimer crystals. At a glance, it can be extremely difficult to tell a Herkimer crystal from an ordinary quartz crystal, but careful examination and familiarity with the qualities of a Herkimer diamond will make identification crystal-clear.

Instructions

1. Familiarize yourself with the origin of Herkimer diamonds to avoid confusion with ordinary quartz crystals. The Herkimer quartz stones were originally mined in Herkimer County of New York. True Herkimer diamonds come only from this region, but crystals with similar compositions have been mined in Arizona, Argentina, the Ukraine, China and Norway. A reliable vendor can tell you the origin of your stone. If you are trying to purchase an authentic Herkimer diamond, only purchase crystals that were mined in New York state.

2. Examine the ends of your stone and look for two distinct points of termination. Herkimer Diamonds naturally terminate at both ends of the stone, forming a diamond-shaped stone with an average of eighteen facets and two end points. Whereas a diamond or an ordinary quartz stone must be cut and polished into shape, most Herkimer stones need minimal effort to bring their brilliance to full light.

3. Observe any metaphysical strength that may emanate from your Herkimer Diamond. Those who believe in the healing energy of stones assert that Herkimer crystals are the strongest of quartz crystals and can induce everything from heightened extra-sensory perception to clearer chakras. While by no means a fool-proof test, see if your Herkimer crystal is stronger in any rituals or meditations than an ordinary crystal. Ask a friend to place each stone in a small pouch so you can blind-test your crystal's force.

Ways To Strengthen Your Memory With Almond Oil

Almond oil is a popular oil sold in grocery stores nationwide. The product is an odorless liquid with a bland or nutty taste. In addition to containing high amounts of mono- and poly-saturated fatty acids, almond oil may also help to strengthen memory when consumed regularly.

Memory Benefits

Although almonds and almond oil are considered to be extremely healthy foods when consumed in moderation, scientists have not yet determined whether or not daily consumption of almond oil improves brain and memory function. Researchers in India believe the oil may help increase brain and memory function when ingested daily (Agricultural Products). However, more studies must be completed before the effects of almond oil on memory can be determined.

Taking Almond Oil

To receive the maximum benefits, mix one tablespoon of almond oil into an eight ounce glass of milk and consume with breakfast each day. Researchers in India believe two to three drops of almond oil applied externally on the head, ears and inside of the nose may help increase brain function (Hubpages). Edible pastes can also be made for more convenient consumption. To make, soak ten almonds overnight in water and remove the hard casing in the morning, then grind with ten grams of butter and two tablespoons of sugar.

Additional Benefits

Almond oil has many health benefits and is high in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E (Agricultural Products). In addition, the oil is often used in aromatherapy and massage therapy, as it is easily absorbed by the skin and helps to clear and refine skin complexion (Agricultural Products). The product also helps strengthen the immune system and may prevent gall stones (Agricultural Products). The product also prevents dandruff and hair loss when applied directly to the scalp.

Peripheral Aneurysm Symptoms

A peripheral aneurysm is a blood vessel that has expanded, or is bulging, in the popliteal artery. This typically occurs in the back of one of the legs, somewhere between the knee and the thigh area. However, it can occur in other areas such as the arms. Many people, sometimes as many as two out of three, do not feel any symptoms at all with this condition. However, symptoms can occur and leg pain, even if you are at rest, can be one such symptom.

Symptoms

Symptoms that can occur with a peripheral aneurysm can include pain in an arm or a leg while exercising, pain in a limb while stationary or at rest, radiating pain, sores on the toes or the fingers, numbness in an arm or leg, and gangrene.

Life-threatening symptoms

This condition can also be life-threatening if the carotid artery is involved instead of the popliteal artery. With the carotid artery, the symptoms could grow to include a stroke, and if arteries in the bowels are affected, symptoms could be experienced that impact the body's ability to function properly with bowel movements.

Nerve-related Symptom

When a peripheral aneurysm applies pressure to a nerve in the body, or even a vein, there is the possibility that it will create the symptom of numbness. In addition, pain and swelling can also occur during this particular scenario as well.

Significant

Another possible symptom of peripheral aneurysms is the formation of a blood clot. Since blood clots can halt or slow down needed blood flow to the brain and other parts of the body, this is an important and dangerous symptom of a peripheral aneurysm.

Unfortunately, blood clots occur inside the body and thus cannot be detected by sight or any medical blood test. Blood clot detection occurs when the clot begins to interfere with internal functions (stopping the blood flow enough to cause pain or numbness in the limbs, or creating chest pain or severe headache). Thus, the danger of a blood clot lies in the fact that it isn't detectable until it actually begins to be cause other problems.

Considerations

Having a peripheral aneurysm in one leg of your body increases your chances of having one in the other leg. In addition, it also increases your risk of having an aortic aneurysm, which is more likely to bust or rupture than the peripheral aneurysm.

Benefit Of Detox Tea

Benefit of Detox Tea

Detoxification is a vital step in promoting a healthy, purified body, as toxins enter your system every day through the water you drink, the air you breathe and the food you eat. Drinking detox tea can benefit you by promoting good hydration, introducing antioxidants into your body and eliminating toxins from your blood.

Physical Benefits

Detox tea can ensure a healthy body and mind with its natural qualities, helping reduce the risk of developing cancer, high blood pressure, heart illness and strokes. It may also improve your body chemistry and speed its ability to heal itself. In addition, it can help alleviate pain and reduce fever, as well as boost your resistance.

Psychological Benefits

Many people are unaware of detox tea's psychological benefits, thanks to the psychoactive substances contained in it, including thiamine, which stimulates brain activity.

Weight Loss

Drinking detox tea can lead to natural weight loss, as it cleanses your colon and liver. Colon cleansing is a crucial aspect of natural weight loss, since those pounds of sludge contribute to weight gain, and toxins hidden in fat cells and its waste sometimes spill into your bloodstream.

Significance

As more and more people ingest fast-food diets, detox tea becomes even more important. In addition, proper functioning of the body gives the mind a sense of well being.

Beneficial Ingredients

Detox teas typically contain ingredients that naturally stimulate the body to function better, including black pepper, burdock, dandelion root, horsetail, gravel root and hydrangea.

Black pepper is thought to have a positive impact on the mucous membranes of the rectum and urinary tracts. Burdock provides nutritional support to liver health and acts as a liver purifier. Dandelion root is a diuretic used as a blood and kidney cleanser, a cleaning agent for the liver, and as a tonic. Gravel root is also a diuretic and is mainly used to treat kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

Horsetail is high in silica, which helps heal broken bones and strengthen fingernails. It is used to treat the kidney and bladder, which helps the flow of urine, ridding the body of impurities and decreasing the likelihood of infection along the urinary tract.

Completely Get Rid Of A Headlice Infestation

Hair brushes must be cleaned to get rid of a lice infestation.

Parents and caregivers hear that a child has head lice and immediately wonder if the entire house and everyone in it shares the infestation. Both adult lice and eggs must be treated as part of an effective treatment program, and lice eggs can live up to one week to 10 days after treatment kills adult eggs. Treating the entire house along with pillowcases, stuffed animals, carpet, mattresses, clothing and car upholstery is necessary to prevent a recurring problem.

Instructions

1. Place all stuffed animals, clothing that cannot be washed in hot water and any non-washable pillows in garbage bags. Tightly close the garbage bags and put them in a non-carpeted area, such as laundry room with tiled flooring. Leave the garbage bags in that area for 10 to 14 days to ensure the lice die. Lice cannot live without a host, so leaving the items in garbage bags kills the adult lice and any lice that hatch within 10 days.

2. Launder all clothing, washable pillows, bedding and sheets that have come in contact with head lice in hot water with detergent. It is not necessary to take clothes out of drawers and wash all clothes in the house.

3. Wash and treat the hair with a lice shampoo or other approved topical treatment For a mild infestation, non-pesticide products kills most lice. Pesticide treatments also are available for more stubborn infestations. Consult a pediatrician, primary care physician or pharmacist for help in choosing an appropriate product.

4. Comb through the hair after treatment to remove eggs, which are called nits. Using a fine-toothed comb or a comb included with the head lice treatment effectively removes nits. Most treatments do not kill the nits, so it is critical that the eggs be removed. Comb through the hair on a daily basis until certain that all nits have been removed.

5. Dry hair daily with a hair dryer. Lice do not like heat, and the heat from a hair dryer can deter adult lice from using that person as a host.

6. Vacuum all of the furniture, carpet, mattresses and car upholstery. For mild infestations, this removes all adult lice from these items. Empty the vacuum bag once vacuuming is finished, and immediately throw the bag away or immediately empty the collection cup into an outside container.

7. Use a commercial lice treatment for heavy infestations for carpets, car upholstery, mattresses and furniture. These sprays often contain chemicals, so doctors do not recommend these unless absolutely necessary.

Pick A Good Bourbon

Bourbon is an American spirit, exclusive to the United States. Federal law requires minimum standards for bourbon content, aging, distillation and bottling, but each distiller uses its own recipe and process to create a distinctive bourbon. A good bourbon is not necessarily the most expensive or from the largest distillery.

Instructions

1. Assemble several different bourbons for tasting. Pour each sample into a small, clear glass for judging.

2. Examine the color of each sample by holding the glass to the light. A darker color usually means a more complex, robust flavor. A lighter color means a more delicate flavor.

3. Swirl the glass to aerate the bourbon. Smell the bourbon with your nose tilted into the glass and an open mouth. This allows for the back of the palate to "taste" the aroma.

4. Place a small sip on the tongue and roll it around your mouth, as you would at a wine tasting. Adding a splash of distilled water to the sample dilutes the alcohol strength and releases subtle flavors.

5. Swallow the bourbon. Study the lingering sensation for a distinctive finish. This finish may be light, medium or full-bodied.

6. Evaluate which sample provided the most inviting experience, based on color, aroma, taste and finish. Record your observations in a notebook, noting the maker of each bourbon.

Adrenal glands are small, about the size of a walnut, but the job they do in your body is anything but small. Adrenal glands are responsible for producing hormones, including cortisol, estrogen and testosterone, which are required for optimum health. They also release adrenaline in times of immediate stress or danger, such as when running in fear. Adrenal glands work in the metabolism of carbohydrates and the regulation of blood sugar. Hormones secreted by the adrenal glands have a major effect on how your think and feel. A weak adrenal system can cause a number of health issues.

Weakness And Lethargy

Stress is a part of our everyday life. Some stressors can be somewhat minor, while others are serious. Our bodies can be put under mental stress from troubled family relationships or relationships at work. Job requirements can put physical stress on us. Injury and disease also stress the body. In a dangerous situation, adrenals enable our bodies to escape. Since the main purpose of the adrenal glands is give the body the ability to deal with any of these stressors, an adrenal system that is reduced in function will seriously affect our health. A weakened adrenal system may be indicated by overall weakness and lethargy. Other symptoms can include blood sugar disorders, headaches, memory problems, dizziness and food cravings.

Addison's Disease

Although it's rare, a seriously underactive cortex, which is the outer section of the adrenal gland, can result in a condition known as Addison's disease. Indications of this condition include fatigue, dizziness, fainting, nausea, loss of appetite, moodiness, a reduction in the amount of body hair and the inability to handle stress. Further symptoms include a feeling of being cold and a darkening of the skin around the elbows, scars, knees, skin colds, mouth and palm creases.

Adrrenal Reduction

Many people take cortisone for diseases such as asthma and arthritis. Unfortunately, many drugs have side effects, especially when taken over a long period of time. Such is the case for those taking cortisone therapy, as the adrenal glands will shrink in size. Bleeding, infections and tumors can also cause problems with adrenal glands.

Complete Adrenal Failure

Poor habits such as smoking, alcohol abuse and drug abuse are known to cause complete adrenal failure. Tuberculosis and pituitary disease can also cause adrenal failure.

Suggestions For Healthy Adrenal Glands

For healthy adrenal glands (as well as good overall health in general), eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly green leafy vegetables, deep-ocean fish, garlic and onions. Avoid fats, processed foods, sugar and sugar beverages and fried foods. Alcohol, caffeine and tobacco are toxic to the adrenal glands. Unresolved stress should be dealt with and resolved, as this long-term condition can seriously weaken the adrenal system.
