Cervical Cancer Biopsy Procedures

Definition








In order to determine whether a woman has cervical cancer, a biopsy of the cervix must be performed. Also known as a punch biopsy, a cervical cancer biopsy removes tissue from the cervix. This cervical cancer biopsy procedure assists physicians in determining whether cancerous cells are present and move forward with a treatment plan.


Preparation


Although most women report that a cervical cancer biopsy procedure is relatively pain free, a patient may want to take a form of pain medication shortly before the procedure. This will dull any discomfort caused by cramping that may occur due to the biopsy. The removal of cervical tissue may give the sensation of being pinched, but this pain is usually quite minimal, especially when pain medication has been taken prior to the biopsy. It is also recommended that women do not douche, have sex or insert anything into the vagina 24 to 48 hours before a cervical biopsy as they can interfere with the results of the test.


Procedure


In order to perform a cervical cancer biopsy procedure, a physician will have the woman lie on her back on an exam table with her feet up in the stirrups. A speculum is inserted into her vagina and opened, which widens the vaginal canal and allows her doctor to see her cervix. A colposcope is then inserted into the vagina. This is a microscope that allows the physician to magnify the cervix to more closely examine it. In order to see the area even more clearly, a cotton swab that has been dipped in a vinegar solution is used to remove mucous from the cervix. After these steps have been taken, the physician will use specialized forceps or a large needle to biopsy, or remove, a small sample of tissue from the cervix. The speculum is then removed from the vagina, completing the procedure, which normally does not take more than 15 minutes.


Results








The tissue that has been removed from the cervix during a biopsy is sent to a lab. At the lab, a doctor called a pathologist who has specialized in the study of disease will analyze the tissue to determine whether it is cancerous. The results are then to sent to the patient's physician, who will discuss them with the patient. A normal biopsy result means that no abnormal cervical cells were detected. An abnormal biopsy result means that abnormal cervical cells were found and cervical cancer is already present or likely to develop in the future due to precancerous cells.

2. Hold the left foot of the patient in your hands. Rub your thumbs down the sole of the foot. This is one of the spleen zones. Apply pressure as you rub. The best way to do this is to use your thumbs.


3. Apply pressure to the outside edge of the arch of the foot. This is not the edge of the foot itself but the area of the foot just before the fatty section toward the outside.


4. Take the right hand of the patient into your hands and massage the hand in between the small finger and ring finger just below the top pad of the hand. This is another reflexology spleen zone. Apply pressure in a circular motion to this area to stimulate the spleen.

Leg Crampscauses And Treatment

Leg cramps affect people of any age, but they are more common in older individuals. Leg cramps are often caused by exertion, dietary deficiencies and dehydration. Leg cramps can be treated with massage, hot or cold compresses or simple diet changes. Severe or recurring leg cramps that do not respond to traditional home remedies should be evaluated by a physician.


Exertion


Sports, fitness routines or anything that overworks the leg muscle can cause leg cramps. Leg cramps from exertion will usually remedy themselves after the muscle is rested. Stretching after a period of intense physical activity may help prevent leg cramps.


Dehydration


A common cause of leg cramps is dehydration. A lack of fluids can cause leg muscles to contract and spasm, resulting in painful cramping.

What Are The Causes Of Ankle Edema

Swollen ankles are caused by an abnormal buildup or fluid retention between the body's cells. The swelling can progress slowly, over time, before it is noticeable. Then the swelling will first occur in the morning and continue to worsen as the day progresses. People with long-term edema experience pitting in the swollen ankles, meaning if you were to press the swollen ankle you could see an indentation. Common Causes

Diseases


Diseases which affect the entire body can affect the ankles. This occurs when excess, abnormal fluid settles not only in the ankles but also in the legs and feet. For instance, arthritis, which can affect all the joints in the body, can target the joints in the ankles. Gout, another arthritic disease, can also attack the ankles. Gout attacks can last a few days or weeks. In addition, heart disease, liver and kidney failure can create fluid buildup that can settle in the ankles.








Insufficiency


In the legs there are small valves within the veins. When these valves weaken, a problem called venous insufficiency can occur. With venous insufficiency, the veins have extreme trouble pumping the blood back to the heart. So along with edema in the ankles, varicose veins can occur. Varicose veins are once-normal veins under the skin's surface which become damaged and filled with blood and fluid.


Chronic Conditions


Severe chronic conditions, such as lung diseases, can cause an increase in pressure in the blood vessels. These vessels lead from the heart to the lungs. Problems in the lungs puts more pressure on the heart. Thus, the extreme amount of pressure causes edema in the ankles, legs and feet.

Diet To Help Hyperactive Children

Most parents and teachers will confirm that consumption of certain foods such as processed food and foods high in sugar contribute to symptoms of hyperactivity for certain children. While diet does not cause ADHD, it can play a major role in symptoms of hyperactivity and some simple dietary changes may help improve behavior and make life a lot easier for child and caregiver alike.


Check for Food Allergies


While any severely restrictive diet for a child should be conducted under medical supervision, a simple allergy elimination trial can be important in identifying particular foods that trigger hyperactivity. Severe food allergies such as allergies to peanuts and seafood will be obvious causing symptoms of itching, rash and breathing problems but moderate or mild food allergies and food intolerances may not be so apparent and demonstrate themselves in symptoms of hyperactivity and other emotional disturbances such as irritability and inattention. The most common causes of mild or moderate allergies are dairy, wheat and corn products. An elimination diet such as the Fiengold Diet will help to confirm if the child has an allergy or intolerance to a certain food. Once a food intolerance is identified, it can be avoided and replaced with a substitute such as using rice or soy milk in place of dairy.


Reduce Sugar and Artificial Chemicals


Sugar is the most common food product identified by parents and teachers as contributing to hyperactivity. While sugar may be a concern, the type of sugar consumed may be more important than the amount. High fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose should be avoided in a diet for hyperactive children. In addition, one should attempt to reduce total sugar consumption. Avoid sugary drinks, candy and highly sweetened processed food products.


Artificial flavors, colors and preservatives present in many convenience and prepackaged foods have also been identified as suspect in contributing to hyperactivity. When arranging a diet to help hyperactive children, food should be prepared from scratch whenever possible and the amount of convenience type food consumed should be minimized.


Ensure Adequate Protein and Nutrition








Adequate amounts of high quality protein should be eaten at every meal, particularly breakfast. Protein aids in maintaining a steady blood sugar level and prevents the ups and downs of mood swings that may contribute to hyperactivity. In addition, protein provides support for brain function important for all children but particularly those who have difficulty maintaining attention. A supplement with omega-3 fatty acids may provide some benefit, particularly one high in EPA as it has been proven to increase brain functioning, stabilize mood and improve hand to eye coordination in children. A quality multivitamin and mineral supplement may also be needed to ensure overall nutrition and provide for dietary deficiencies such as zinc, B vitamins and iron that may play a part in hyperactivity.

Types Of Ovarian Tumors







More than 30 different types of ovarian tumors exist, and each could be benign or malignant. These 30 types make up three sub-categories of tumors: Epithelial, Germ Cell, and Sex Cord Stromal.








Benign Epithelial Tumors


Serous adenomas, mucinous adenomas, and Brenner tumors are epithelial tumors. These are the most common form of ovarian tumor. These tumors start on the lining outside the ovary. Most of them are benign.


Malignant Epithelial Tumors


Ninety percent of ovarian cancers are epithelial ovarian carcinomas. When diagnosed with this type of tumor, it is classified by a subtype, grade and stage. This determines how likely it is for the tumor to spread and grow quickly. Women over 50 are more susceptible to this type.


Benign Germ Cell Tumors


Germ cell tumors form in the egg-producing cells of the ovary. Most are benign, and only about 5 percent lead to ovarian cancer. Women under 30 are most commonly diagnosed.


Malignant Germ Cell Tumors


Dysgerminoma is the most common form of malignant ovarian tumor. It usually affects teens and women in their 20s. In the majority of cases, the tumor is limited to the ovary, and patients undergo surgery to have the ovary removed.


Sex Cord Stromal Tumors


Sex Cord Stromal makes up 5 percent of cases and is the least aggressive. In this type, tumors form in tissue that holds the ovary together. This tissue produces estrogen and progesterone. Only about 1 percent of ovarian cancers are sex cord stromal.

Burn Sage Over A Pet'S Body







Sage can be burned in healing, purification or funeral ceremonies.


Sage burning customs can be found in many cultures. Sage burning can be particularly important in Native American ceremonies but was also reputedly used by the Druids and in the Amazon. Sage is often associated with purification and is thought to dispel negativity. It can be burned over the body of pet as a cleansing or healing ritual. Sage may also be used for pet funeral ceremonies. It is best to burn sage as a smudge stick or in a non-flammable container.


Instructions


Pet Healing or Cleansing








1. Buy sage, preferably white sage, from your local farmers market, health food, or New Age store. You can also grow sage in your garden.


2. If your sage is fresh, tie the stems and place it in a paper bag to dry. Tie the open end of the paper bag around the tied stems, poke holes in the bag for air, and hang in a dry place for at least two weeks.


3. Bundle the sage into a smudge stick and tie with string.


4. Hold the smudge stick in your hand, light it, and blow out the flames. This will cause the stick to smoke.


5. Direct the smoke over your pet's body with your hand or with the feather or fan.


6. Place the smudge stick in the bowl and extinguish.


Pet Funeral


7. Prepare sage by following Steps 1-2 of Section 1.


8. Place loose sage in the bowl.


9. Light the sage and then extinguish the flames so the sage is smoldering and producing smoke.


10. Place the bowl near the body of your pet during the funeral ceremony. You may want to direct the smoke over the body of your pet at the beginning of the ceremony or just before burial.


11. When you have finished the ceremony, extinguish the sage by covering it with sand in the bowl.

Operate An Aed Machine

According the American Heart Association, over 294,000 Americans experience sudden cardiac arrest. While most common in adults with coronary artery disease, sudden cardiac arrest can strike people of all ages. Defibrillation, or restoring a heartbeat, can double the chance of survival in these cases. Automated external defibrillator (AED) machines are available in many public places, including schools, recreation centers, senior centers, and hospitals. The American Heart Association offers certification courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation using an automated external defibrillator (AED).








Instructions


Operate an AED Machine


1. Ensure machine is in working order and in a convenient location. Also, request a bystander call 911 for emergency medical assistance


2. Verify person is in cardiac arrest with no respiration, pulse, or consciousness. The American Heart Association states an AED should not be used on a person under eight years old. (See Reference 2) For all persons at least eight years old, place electrodes and operate the machine in the same manner.


3. Turn on AED machine by pushing the ON/OFF button. A light will come on indicating the machine is ready.


4. Prepare person for electrode placement by placing him or her on the back on a hard surface, removing clothing from the upper torso, removing excess hair from electrode sites, and cleaning/drying the skin if it is dirty. Materials for cleaning the skin are not included in the AED kit. If you clean the skin with water, dry the skin completely with a towel or gauze to prevent risk of electrocution. Do not apply alcohol to the skin.


5. Apply electrodes firmly to the chest. Place the electrode marked with a heart or a plus sign (+) lateral to the left nipple on the left side under the arm. Place the other electrode on the upper right torso next to the sternum beneath the collar bone.


6. Connect the electrode cord to the AED machine. The machine will display a "Connect Electrodes" message until the cords are properly connected. (See Reference 2)


7. Follow screen messages and voice prompts from the AED machine. The machine will prompt you to "Stand Clear," which means you must not touch the person, the AED machine, or other items in contact with the person, such as clothing or bedding. Following automatic analysis, the AED machine may prompt, "Shock Advised." Then, it will prompt, "Stand Clear" and "Push To Shock." After shocking once, the AED machine will analyze the person again.


8. Continue to follow prompts. Following analysis after the first shock, it may prompt you to repeat the shock. If so, go back to Step 7. If it prompts "No Shock Advised," it will prompt you to Check For Pulse or


9. "Check For Pulse" as prompted by the AED machine if the voice prompt states "No Shock Advised."








10. Start CPR if the AED machine prompts, "If No Pulse, Start CPR." Following CPR, the machine will prompt you to "Check For Pulse." At this point, repeat Steps 7 through 10 based on the AED machine prompts until emergency medical assistance arrives.

Why We Need Protection


Because mosquitoes suck blood from their hosts, like us, and then move to another host, they carry many diseases. Malaria is a huge problem in tropical climates. CDC Tests and Recommendations

CDC's Two Ingredient Recommendations


Many ingredients have been registered with the EPA, but the CDC has concluded that two of those ingredients have a higher efficiency rating in relation to effectiveness and longevity than the others. These two ingredients are DEET, (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) and Picaridin, (KBR 3023). In addition, an oil-based ingredient from lemon eucalyptus (p-menthane 3,8-diol [PMD]), which is a plant-based repellent, also is registered with the EPA, which has found that it provides protection similar to products with low concentrations of DEET.


Product Recommendations


The EPA offers a guide to the effectiveness of repellents. The products that top the list contain DEET. These include Bug Screen by Proderma Products, Inc.; CVS Insect Repellent Woodland Trail by CVS Pharmacy , Inc.; Insect Repellent 30 by Tender Corp.; and Fite Bite 30 by Travel Medicine. All these provide two hours of protection..


There are also products that contain lower concentrations of active ingredients, for more sensitive or younger skin; however, don't use insect repellent on babies. For example, Family DEET Wipes by Johnson & Son, Inc., contain DEET and provide two hours of protection. Claire-1 by S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc., contains Picaridin, and it also lasts for two hours.


Active ingredients are listed on the labels of every repellent product. If you are unsure about any product, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.








Where to Purchase Insect Repellents


Limited selections of repellents are available in many retail outlets, including drugstores and grocery stores. Outdoor-product stores also usually have a large selection of repellents in their camping department.

Shoulder Fracture Therapy







A shoulder fracture is a very painful injury making many day-to-day activities impossible to accomplish. Fractures are usually diagnosed using X-ray technology. Treating a fractured shoulder with physical therapy is a must to ensure a strong recovery of muscle tone and range of motion in the shoulder.


RICE


If your shoulder does not require surgery adhere to the RICE method to help it heal. RICE stands for rest, ice, compress and elevate. Rest the shoulder as much as possible icing the shoulder with a cold compress several times a day to help with pain and swollen tissue. Elevate the arm when lying down to keep weight off the shoulder. Keep the arm in a sling to keep unneeded weight off the shoulder until the arm heals enough to exercise. Exercises and physical therapy should not be attempted until the shoulder has been examined by a doctor and the shoulder has been cleared for exercise.


Physical Therapy


After X-rays have been taken to determine the condition of the shoulder, the doctor will likely recommend a physical therapist. Physical therapy is required to improve the range of motion and strength of the shoulder. Performing exercises keeps the shoulder from getting stiff in the joints.


Exercises will likely include front raises, lateral raises and diagonal raises using resistance bands. Resistance bands provide a small amount of weight against the muscles, strengthening them without the need for free weights. Exercises should be done slowly to prevent further injury.


At Home


It is important as part of the therapy and recovery period that the home is set up to minimize the need to use the fractured shoulder. To keep the effort to a minimum all materials in the house should be moved to a height where the patient does not have to lift the arm above the head. If surgery is required, the first few days of getting dressed may be difficult and help may be required.

Oriental Massage Rules

There are several rules to Oriental massages.


There are many types of Oriental massages, and each kind has unique rules that must be followed to adhere with that style. Asian massages are meant to center both the body and mind, and because of this, the masseurs that practice Oriental massage follow a strict regiment for their clients. With some know-how, understanding Oriental massages can be simple.








Shiatsu


Shiatsu massage is one of the most common and popular kinds of Oriental massages. Originating in Japan, this style is a traditional hands-on massage that incorporates some rules to create a harmonious feeling. Masseurs must use only their fingers, palms and thumbs to administer the massage, and must focus on points of the body that connect to the central and autonomic nervous system. These points include the hands, feet and lower back.


Tui Na


Tui Na means "push pull," and is a massage style that comes from China. This type of massage is used for medicinal purposes as alternative therapy, and is meant to ease bone and joint pains, similar to a visit to the chiropractor. Tui Na masseurs use hand techniques and stretching exercises to realign discs and aching bones. They focus on parts of the body that include the neck, back and legs. Clients may be laying down or sitting up for a Tui Na massage, depending on the area they would like to focus on. This type of massage does not use oils or lotions, making it a good choice for those with skin allergies.


Chakra


Chakra is a Tibetan method of therapy, commonly used for yoga. A Chakra massage incorporates many principals of this method, including scents and deep-relaxation breathing. In a Chakra massage, clients choose scents that appeal to them to discover areas in life that need attention, and these can range from spiritual, family or work problems. The masseur then uses those scents to tell a story, providing the clients with visual images while massaging correlating areas on the body. Diabetic Meal Ideas

Meals for diabetics should contain variety be balanced, and must be eaten on a regular schedule for better blood-glucose control. Skipping meals increases the risk for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and overeating at the next meal. Bend down and touch your toes. Hold it for 10 seconds. Come back up and stretch your arms to the ceiling. Hold that for 10 seconds. Put your left arm in the air and take it behind your back. Keep your elbow pointed to the ceiling. Take your right hand and put it on your elbow. Bend to the right side. Reverse arms and bend to the left. Now take your hands and place them on your hips. Pivot your hips from side to side. Do this for 10 reps on each side. Sit on the ground and push both of your legs forward as far as they can go. Spread them wide. Take your hands and put them on one foot, stretching as far as you can. Hold for 10 seconds. Move your hands to the other leg and hold. Bring your feet together. Stretch your hands towards your feet and hold for 10 seconds. If you can, bring yourself to the crab walk position. This is a position where you will be on all fours with your back facing the ground. Push your back as high as you feel comfortable. Hold for 10 seconds. This routine will keep your muscles limber and fresh and ready to exercise. If your gym offers it, take yoga classes to increase your flexibility.


Cardiovascular or Aerobic Training








Cardiovascular training is vital to losing weight and staying in shape. Cardiovascular training strengthens your heart and lungs. When you have low cardiovascular health, you will be tired often, out of breath easily and low energy. With high cardiovascular health, you will have extra energy, greater stamina and better drive. It also makes all other exercises easier, so it is important to focus on this aspect of your training. Cardiovascular training can be anything that requires you to exert yourself: running, walking, swimming, jogging or even rock climbing. Pick an exercise you enjoy. Doing what you enjoy is half the battle.

Take a moment to stretch your body all over, then find a bicycle machine. Set it for an increased intensity routine. This time, go for about 10 minutes, then stretch your legs and arms again. Finish off with five more minutes on the treadmill.


Strength Training


Strength training can offer many weight-loss benefits. Idle muscles burn more energy than idle fat. By building up strong muscles, you can simply be relaxing while watching a movie and burn more calories than you would if you had less muscle. When you lift weights, you are actually tearing your muscles a little. Your body then repairs the muscles, which makes them stronger.


Start out with bench-pressing machine. This will work your chest and arms very well. Put on a safe amount of weight for what you can handle. Don't push too hard at the beginning. Do 10 reps to begin, and if you feel up to it, do another 10. Next find a machine that works your arms, back and chest. This type of machine will have two levers to pull toward your chest. Set your weight for a safe level. Do 10 reps, and if you feel comfortable, another 10. Find the machine that lets you work the back of your legs. Set this to an appropriate level with 10 reps and another 10 if you feel you can. These workouts will have worked your legs, back, arms and core muscles. Vary your routine using different machines every day so that you don't get bored and don't strain your muscles. Slowly increase the exercises you do and the weights you use.

How Is Antivenom Made

The first antivenom was developed for use against the cobra.


Antivenom is a biological product that is created to treat the venomous bites and stings of poisonous animals. Though snake antivenom is the most famous, antivenom has also been produced to successfully treat spider bites, scorpion stings and jellyfish attacks.


Types


Antivenom can be divided into two types. Monovalent antivenom is only useful for treating the bite of one specific species. Polyvalent antivenom can be used to treat bites or stings from different species. For example, there is no specific antivenom for the Australian copperhead, so instead a polyvalent antivenom must be used.


Production








Antivenom is created by extracting venom, or poison, from the animal whose bite needs to be treated. In snakes, this refers to a process known as milking. Another animal, like a sheep, a rabbit or a horse, will be injected with between 1/10th to 1/100th of one lethal dose of the venom. Over the span of several weeks, the animal will be injected with an increasing amount of the venom until it can comfortably handle a dose that is several times larger than the initial lethal dose. Then blood is drawn from the animal and centrifuged, which will separate the white blood cells from the red blood cells. The white blood cells contain powerful antibodies that fight off the effects of the venom, and they are the antivenom that is sent off to the hospitals.


Time Frame


Antivenoms need to be administered to the patient as soon as possible after a bite. In the case of snake bites, the antivenom should ideally be administered within four to five hours.


History


The first antivenom developed was meant for use on snakes. It was created in 1895 by Albert Calmette and it was meant for use against the bite of the Indian naja snake, which was another name for the cobra. After that, many antivenoms were developed during the 19th century. During this time, antivenoms were developed for scorpions, spiders and poisonous frogs and toads.

1. To get pregnant fast with Clomid, you need to visit your doctor for a prescription. Doctors routinely prescribe Clomid to patients who can't get pregnant, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding one who will comply. Some doctors only prescribe Clomid if you have been trying to achieve pregnancy for a year or more. That way it shows that you are truly having issues with fertility. 2. Ask for the generic of Clomid, clomiphene citrate, when you fill the prescription at the pharmacy. 3. Take one pill on Day 3 through Day 7 of your menstrual cycle. (Some doctors may say to take it on Day 5 through Day 9, but most people who have success and get pregnant took Clomid on Day 3 through Day 7. Discuss it with your doctor if you're concerned, but it's really just a matter of preference. Neither will harm you.) Make sure what you are calling Day 1 of your cycle is true bleeding, not just the spotting that occurs before the full blown period starts. The most common dosage of Clomid is 50mg.


4. Turn down the multiple ultrasounds to save money. Your doctor may want you to come in daily around ovulation to see how your ovaries are responding. This can be very helpful, but it is extremely expensive and again, insurance doesn't cover it. Ask politely if you can skip the ultrasounds this month due to cost. The ultrasounds won't help you get pregnant, but they will show your doctor if the Clomid is doing its job. If cost and time aren't issues, then go for it. The ultrasound tech will be able to tell you how many viable eggs you have, and the more viable eggs, the more of a chance of pregnancy.


5. Have intercourse every other day starting on Day 7. Men need about 48 hours to really build up enough sperm in their systems to easily get you pregnant. They can go two days in a row ONE TIME, and then after that, the sperm will start dwindling in numbers. Having sex every day of your cycle is a bad idea and will not help you get pregnant fast. In fact, you may not get pregnant after multiple cycles if you do.


6. Start checking your cervical mucus on Day 10 of your cycle to see if it's time to try to get pregnant. Cervical mucus (CM) should be wet and stringy, and of an egg white consistency. When the egg white CM starts, ovulation is imminent. Clomid has a tendency to dry up cervical mucus a little bit, so some people recommend taking Guaifenesin (Robitussin makes a product, but the generic is cheaper) each day from Day 10 to Day 16 to make the CM more favorable to sperm. It probably isn't necessary, but it can't hurt.


7. Start using an ovulation predictor kit on Day 10 as well. With both the ovulation predictor kit and the CM check, you should have a very good idea of when you are ovulating, and that knowledge will help you get pregnant fast! Once the kit says you are ovulating, have intercourse that day and the next day. This is the one time you get to have sex two days in a row. Then go back to every other day for as long as you'd like (at least 8 days after the positive.)


8. Take a pregnancy test on or after Day 28 if you want an accurate results. Why make yourself crazy with testing every day (even though you're dying to know!)? If you are pregnant, it will show up on a stick on Day 28. Best wishes on making your bundle of joy happen!

1. Measure your current weight on an accurate scale.
