Assistive technology refers to any device which helps a person perform a task. The "task" may be communication, work, daily living, recreation, or any other activity. Assistive technology can fall into many categories and is generally divided by the area of emphasis. There are assistive devices for speech, independent living, vision, hearing and learning disabilities. Two common areas in which assistive technology is used are speech and learning disabilities.


Assistive technology can be high or low tech.


Assistive Technology for Speech


Assistive technology for speech is further divided depending on need. The consumer may need assistance in receptive (understanding) language or in expressive (speaking) language.


Receptive language assistive technology may be geared more toward people with cognitive disabilities. For example, a person may need help with cooking skills. A recipe book which holds detailed step-by-step instructions (in words or pictures) will qualify as an assistive technology device. A planning book or a picture schedule for a person's work day or school day also qualifies.


Expressive language assistive technology focuses on the need of a person to communicate her own thoughts. This may apply to someone who has undergone throat surgery due to cancer, received a traumatic brain injury or has a congenital condition affecting speech. Another application is in a situation in which speech is present but not understandable to others. Examples of these devices are simple picture symbol books, electronic talking machines or voice synthesizers. A teletypewriter can be used with the telephone although video phone usage is increasing.








Assitive Technology for Learning Disabilities


Assistive technology for learning disabilities varies greatly depending on the area of need.


For a person who has a reading disabilit, an assistive technology device might be a tape recorder with textbooks on tape. This allows the student to learn content without being held back by the reading difficulty.


Assistive Technology for ADHD


Students with learning disabilities due to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may benefit from an age-appropriate scheduler (a personal digital assistant, a notebook or a checklist). To help a child remain in his seat at school, stress balls and other hand fidget items are useful. Even the iPod can be used to help teenagers focus on study guides through the iPREPpress. This service offers downloads of study guides, foreign language lessons and test preparation materials.


Assistive Technology for Limited Hand Use








People who have hand limitations may choose to use a portable computer in the classroom or even at church for taking notes. Jar openers are made to fit a variety of jar sizes and provide extra leverage, so less hand strength is needed.

These devices may be high-tech and costly or low-tech, less expensive devices. Assistive technology can be purchased from a therapy catalog or from a local discount store or it can even be homemade.

Treatments Of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer treatment is based on what type and stage the cancer is in. Depending on this, there are a variety of options for combating this disease.


Surgery


There are a bevy of surgeries for treating lung cancer. These include Mediastinoscopy (sampling of lymph nodes to assess spreading of cancer), Wedge resection (removing small section of one lung), Lobectomy (remove entire lobe of one lung) and Pneumonectomy (removal of a lung). Hospital stays for these surgeries tend to run at least a week, though, depending on other health issues, can run much longer.


Radiation Therapy


Radiation therapy is prescribed by oncologists, who work with patients to design a treatment program based on the stage and severity of the lung cancer. Radiation can destroy cancer cells without surgery, though it is sometimes administered before or after surgery.


Chemotherapy








Chemotherapy typically includes one or several drugs, which are prescribed by an oncologist. Chemotherapy is known to help radiation therapy be more effective; it can also include an experimental drug as part of a clinical trial.


Photodynamic Therapy








This form of therapy involves bronchial tubes and can eliminate cancer caught in early stages. For those in the later stages of lung cancer, photodynamic therapy is used to aid in preventing blockage of bronchial tubes.

Prognosis Following Retinal Tear Laser Surgery

Retinal tear surgery can be done by laser or by cryotherapy. Both procedures seal the lifted piece of retina back to the wall of the eye by causing a scar to form. Laser repair is less irritating to the eye, according to the Mayo Clinic. Prognosis depends on the degree and cause of the tear.


Immediately after Surgery


Vision from laser may be decreased from the bright light for 10 to 15 minutes. There may be mild discomfort. Vision will be blurry.


Several Months afer Surgery


Vision could remain blurry for a long time after laser surgery. Depending on where the tear was, you could have a blind spot.








Side Effects


Light sensitivity and night blindness are common after laser surgery. Floaters may be seen initially from debris in the vitreous.


Complications


As with any medical procedure, there may be complications. Bleeding could occur, or a large scar could form. Blurry vision could be permanent. Pressure in the eye could rise to dangerous levels.


Recovery


Repair of retinal tears is generally very successful. Vision recovery depends on retinal problems that existed before the tear or that caused the tear.

1. Melt the beeswax pellets. Fill the base of a double boiler 1/2 full of water. In the top of the double boiler, pour in the beeswax pellets. Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the beeswax pellets have melted.


2. Heat the oils. In a pot, heat the coconut and olive oils. Using a candy thermometer, test the temperatures of both the oils and the wax. When the temperatures are the same, pour them into a blender. Blend the mixture on high for 3 minutes.








3. Add the Aloe Vera gel and the essential oil into the blender, and blend on high for 3 more minutes. The lotion should be creamy and light. Pour into containers and let the lotion cool completely before putting the lids on them.

"Ruby" derives from the Latin "rubens"/"ruber" which means "red." Calculate Biorythms

Have you experienced days where it seems everything goes right, and also days where everything seems to fall completely flat? Most people can't explain the reason for this. Those who follow biorhythms, however, believe they can calculate the days when you will hit your peak in some areas and your valley in others. Biorhythms track three aspects of your life: physical, emotional and intellectual. According to Biorhythm adherents, these aspects move in steady and predictable rhythms, rising and falling in patterns that dictate your performance. You can figure out your biorhythms using calculations based on your age and birthday.








Instructions








1. Multiply the number of years you have been alive by 365. For example, if you are 24 years old, you have been alive for 8,760 days.


2. Add one to that number for every leap year through which you have lived. If you are 24 years old in 2010, you have been alive since 1985. Add an extra day for each of the following leap years: 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008. Change your base number to 8,766.


3. Add the number of days since your last birthday. Add 30 days to the number, for example, if you have been 24 for one month. Change your total to 8,796.


4. Divide your number by 23 for the physical cycle, 28 for the emotional cycle and 33 for the intellectual cycle. These numbers represent the number of days in each cycle. Use all numbers before the decimal place and three numbers after the decimal place. In the example, the physical number is 382.434; the emotional number is 314.142 and the intellectual number is 266.545. The person in this example has been through 382 physical cycles, 314 emotional cycles and 266 intellectual cycles.


5. Calculate your current place in your biorhythm cycles by multiplying the numbers after the decimal point by the number of days in each cycle. Take the numbers in the previous step: for the physical cycle, .434 x 23 = 9.9; the person in this example would be 9.9 days into the current physical cycle. Multiply .142 x 28 and .545 x .33 and this person would be 3.9 days into the emotional cycle and 17.9 days into the intellectual cycle.

A glazed window in the door cuts down on the use of the door and provides an easy way to see if it's safe to open the door during a fire. Fire doors come with windows made of ceramic or borosilicate glass, wire mesh glass or a layer of liquid sodium sandwiched between two panes of glass. Smaller glass panels tend to be more resistant than bigger ones. It's important to use a fire-resistant glazing system to hold the window in place.

Identify Xerosis

Xerosis is the medical term given to excessively dry skin. Everyone experiences dry skin at some point. Typically, in winter months, when the air is drier, people feel their skin tighten and often peel. But with Xerosis, the skin is abnormally dry, and can even become scaly. There are many treatments available, some even over the counter. The important thing is being able to properly identify the difference between normal, dry skin and Xerosis.


Instructions


Identify Xerosis


1. Look yourself over in a full-length mirror. Note if your skin appears dry in general, or if there seem to be a couple of dry, almost scaly patches of skin.


2. Many factors contribute to Xerosis. They can include washing with unmoisturized soap, bathing for long periods of time, bathing or showering excessively and/or bathing with very hot water. All of these factors can contribute to drying out the skin. Determine if any of them may apply to you.


3. Another factor to check is your environment. Living in cooler climates, especially during winter months, can contribute to Xerosis. Indoor heaters offer no moisture or humidity, so skin dries out easily. Also, if you are outdoors during colder weather, the body tends to protect itself by drawing blood away from the skin. This can cause skin to become dry and crack easily.








4. If your skin appears drier than normal and lotion doesn't help, it may be time to contact your physician. You may live in an area with a higher risk factor for developing Xerosis, in which case something stronger than an over-the-counter lotion may be needed.

Build A Homemade Still

Stills are used in commercial and home production of alcohol.


Stills are an apparatus that uses a heating and cooling process to separate various liquids from other liquids, or solids from liquids. Stills are also the main equipment used in the production of alcohol. By boiling the fermented liquid, the still separates and concentrates the alcohol in a vapor; when cooled, the resulting liquid will have a high percentage of alcohol. Large stills are used in commercial applications and there is a committed number of hobbyists who produce their own personal alcohol through homemade stills.








Instructions


1. Form the copper tubing into a coil. You can use any cylindrical object as your template to bend the copper. Copper is a very soft metal; during the process make sure you do not bend the copper so that the tube itself becomes closed or bent. You will want to leave six to eight inches of straight pipe at both ends.








2. Insert one end of the copper coil into a jug. The jug can be any size, provided that the opening is large enough for the copper piping to be inserted in. Drill a hole in the bottom of the jug to match the diameter of the copper tubing.


3. Create a stand for the jug that will allow you to place the bottle or flask under the drilled hole.


4. Drill two holes into your rubber stopper. One hole needs to be small enough to securely the hold the cooking thermometer. The other hole needs to be slightly smaller than the diameter of the copper tubing.


5. Pour the mash into the kettle. Insert the stopper into the kettle's spout. Insert the cooking thermometer into the stopper.


6. Crimp the copper tubing so it can be inserted into the second hole that was drilled in the rubber stopper.


7. Place the kettle on the single element, turn the element on and heat the mash to a temperature between 170 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The mash will create a vapor that will travel through the copper tubing, and, as it cools, will collect in the jug and drip into your final container.

Live Your Truth

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: "It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude." But how Emerson? The world is full of people ready to advise us, direct us, persuade us, implore us, analyze us, judge us, and ultimately, confuse the crap out of us. Like this, they holler: Hate that! Buy this! Believe that! Honor this! Squash that! Wear this! Do that! Learn this! Ignore that! With all the noise, how are each of us supposed to be able to hear our own quiet, internal voices sweetly speaking our unique, individual truths? While I cannot say that I know the answer for certain, I have been working consciously at this endeavor for years and have developed some tactics that help me ignore the chatter of the outside world and live my truth with commitment and conviction. It is my hope that these tips inspire and empower you to do the same.

Live Your Truth


1. Recognize the value of being a truthful person. Think of a time when you were in the presence of a person who was living his or her truth. Do you remember how that feels? For me, it is calming. With a person like this, I don't have to dig for hidden agendas or decipher mixed messages, nor do I have to create a facade about the type of person I am or am not. On the other hand, when I spend time with somebody who lies, manipulates or is unsure about their own truth, I feel uneasy. It's hard to know what to believe or where I stand with such a person. In turn, it makes it harder for me to be truthful. I go into protective mode; I feel on guard and like a detective. When a person lives his or her truth, it allows me to easily live my truth. And when I live my truth, it allows others to easily live their truths. The more you live your truth, the more people will feel calm, centered and inspired in your presence.


2. Become aware of your lies. There are many ways to lie: fabricating stories about your life to make yourself seem more interesting, laughing at jokes that aren't funny to you just to be "polite," saying "yes" to an invitation that you don't want to accept, hypocritically acting in ways that are not consistent with your words and not holding up your end of promises and contracts are just some examples. What lies are you perpetuating to the world and to yourself?


3. Make room for your truth to surface. Your internal truth reveals itself subtly, in a language that is deep, soft and shy. In order to hear and appreciate its message, you must spend time connecting to yourself. For me, this means taking a walk, writing in my journal or having a wild solo dance party to my favorite music in my bedroom. For you it might mean prayer, meditation, hiking, taking a bath, playing music or reading sacred texts.


4. Act like a dog. Have you ever seen a dog "fake nice" to somebody he did not like? No. When a dog doesn't like somebody, he growls, he barks, he avoids that person. I'm not saying to bark, bite or go out of your way to be a jerk to people you do not like, but I am saying that-as a general rule-most of us put way too much energy into being overly friendly to people we would rather have nothing to do with. You don't have to like everybody. Not everybody has to like you. It is OK to be indifferent, distant and contained when in the presence of people you do not like.


5. Before you speak, ask yourself, "Is what I'm about to say true? Could I rephrase my words in a way that would better reflect my essential truth?" Use words carefully, because the things you say have tremendous power.


6. Feel it in your gut. Truth most often radiates from some place other than your mind. The mind can twist and turn, complicate and dilute, while the gut merely responds. This is the purest form of truth. When you get a hunch or a strong instinct, pay attention!








7. Surround yourself with truth-seekers, truth-tellers and truth-livers. The more you are around truthful people, the more you will be able to be truthful yourself. While you cannot be around 100 percent-truthful people, 100 percent of the time, it is important to consciously seek others who value truth in their lives.


8. Watch out for haters. Some people will not like your truth. They will be annoyed, angry, defensive, threatened and scared. You don't need to argue or fight these people, but you do need to pay attention. When you see that somebody is trying to smash your truth, you must give extra attention to remaining strong, calm and centered.

Goldenseal Dosage For Sinus & Ear Infections

Goldenseal is an herb that was first medicinally used by Native Americans. It can be found as a whole root, tea, supplement or tablet. It is commonly used in the alternative health field to treat sinus and ear infections caused by bacteria or viruses.


Properties








According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, some clinical studies have shown that goldenseal has a compound, berberine, that may aid in curing infections. Goldenseal's roots contain hydrastine and berberine alkaloids. Both these alkaloids have bacteria and virus fighting properties. Berberine is also responsible for goldenseal's yellowish hue.


In addition,the herb's properties are believed to aid in healing congestion and inflammation and in strengthening the immune system. Vtamins and nutrients that can be found in goldenseal include calcium, vitamin B complex, vitamin A, biotin and phosphorus.


Sinus and ear infections, which are usually caused by fungi or bacteria, can be treated with the herb. But it is vitally important to use the right dosage.








Dosages


Goldenseal supplement brands have different dosage recommendations on their package, based on the amount of goldenseal in their capsules. Generally, the recommended dosage is 250 mg to 1 grams up to 3 times a day. Some labels indicate taking 3,420 mg a day to treat the flu. Goldenseal extracts can recommend taking between 10 to 30 drops during the course of the illness. Powdered goldenseal root can be taken at doses of 4 to 6 grams.


Tea can be made by boiling 1 cup of water and adding 2 tablespoons of powdered goldenseal root. Allow the herb to steep for 15 minutes and strain. Have tea several times a day.


To help with sinusitis, pour one cup of saline solution in a Neti pot and add 1 tablespoon of goldenseal extract. Tilt head and pour mixture into each nostril at a time. Irrigate sinuses twice a day for five days. You can buy a Neti pot, which looks like a tea kettle, at an alternative health store.


Avoid using goldenseal for longer than a week at a time. Contact your doctor if you start experiencing any side effects.


Side Effects


According to the American Cancer Society, berberine can disrupt heart rhythm, cause jaundice and have a unpredictable effect on blood pressure, especially in people with heart disease. The herb can also cause nausea, vomiting, seizures, breathing problem and even death when taken in high doses. Start taking goldenseal in small doses in case you are allergic. Pregnant women, women breast feeding and children should not take goldenseal. Avoid taking goldenseal for extended periods, because it can disrupt the nervous system.

Prevent End Stage Renal Disease

End-stage-renal disease (ESRD) is the complete failure of the kidney. It is the final stage of chronic kidney disease, which is a progressive loss of kidney function over time. ESRD is a serious condition and can lead to death. Patients with ESRD are often put on dialysis or have kidney transplants, which are very costly.








Instructions


1. Control your blood pressure and blood sugar. About two-thirds of end-stage renal disease cases are caused by either diabetes or hypertension. About one-third of diabetic patients develop some form of chronic kidney disease, which might eventually lead to ESRD. If you have diabetes, you should keep your A1C concentration less than 7 percent. You also should keep your blood pressure lower than 130/80 mm Hg.


2. Use angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE-inhibitor) to reduce the risk of ESRD. Studies showed that the use of ACE inhibitors like ramipril can reduce the risk of ESRD in both nondiabetic and diabetic patients by 22 to 35 percent.


3. If you have diabetes or hypertension, have your urine tested regularly for protein and albumin. High concentrations of total protein and/or albumin are an indication of kidney failure. Early treatment of kidney failure will stop or at least slow the progression to end-stage renal disease.








4. If you are at high risk for ESRD, you should have a protein-restricted diet. The National Kidney Foundation recommends a daily diet of 0.8 to 1.0 g of protein per kg per day and a daily caloric intake of 30 to 35 kcal per kg per day for patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.


5. If you are a smoker, quit smoking. Smoking increases the risk of ESRD in diabetic patients by 30 percent.

Our resolutions are set, the pressure is on and we have much to anticipate, but it seems nearly impossible to get the ball rolling. Perhaps it's the dark days. Perhaps it's the mourning of another year gone by. Perhaps it's all in my mind. Whatever the cause--if you're like me and suffer from a severe case of January doldrums--follow these tips to get you through. February will be here before we know it!


Instructions


1. Try a new look. Get your hair cut differently. Create new outfits by playing around with the clothes in your closet and mixing items in ways you've never tried. Buy a single accessory to spice things up. Smile more. Learn to wink. Walk taller.








2. Eat healthy. That means lots of veggies, fruit, whole grains, clean sources of protein and water. I know, I know--it's easier said than done. But remember, there is a reason for the saying: "You are what you eat." If you eat junk, you'll feel like junk too.


3. Exercise, exercise, exercise. It doesn't matter what you do; it just matters that you move your body. Take a walk, dance around your room, practice yoga, ride a bike, play basketball, dive into the pool. Post-exercise endorphins are one of the best ways to lift your spirits.


4. Take life one day at a time. If you are the type to make New Year's Resolutions, remember that change doesn't happen all at once, but slowly, inch by inch. Don't be discouraged if you don't see results immediately. Remember, it's only January. If you keep your eyes on the prize and stay the course, come June you could be living an entirely different life than you've got right now.


5. Hibernate. Chances are you're craving more sleep than normal. Try getting to bed earlier, take naps when you can and allow yourself to sleep in on the weekends.


6. Discover your inner artist. Now is the perfect time to finish that novel you've been working on, pick up your guitar that's been gathering dust in the corner, practice your drawing skills, take pictures or learn to dance.








7. Check in with friends. If you're feeling down, chances are your friends are feeling it too. Instead of bottling up your blues, get it out in the open. It always helps when you know you aren't the only one feeling down.

General anesthesia is a procedure where a tube is placed down a person's throat prior to a surgery. A patient is given an anesthetic to help him sleep while the operation is performed. The procedure is done thousands of times every day, but some people will experience a few side effects later. These aren't life threatening, but can be an annoyance.

Many people experience side effects following general anesthesia. These side effects typically appear within a few hours after the surgery or operation and resolve themselves on their own. People report feeling dehydrated and nauseous, sometimes feeling like they had been drinking the night before. They also claim to have headaches and pain in their muscles or joints. There are also some individuals who have a sore throat. These side effects are generally similar to the symptoms of the cold or flu.

The side effects of a general anesthesia usually appear just a few hours after surgery is complete. The feeling of a sore throat or dry throat is typically the first thing patients notice and this is the result of the tube used to help the patients breathe during the surgery. These side effects generally last a few hours, but can last for several days. Most patients treat their problems with over-the-counter medications that relieve the pain.

There are some patients who experience more unusual side effects as the result of this procedure. While these problems aren't found in all patients, they are reported in a small number of cases. Nightmares are one of the more unusual problems and patients usually identify this problem the night immediately following the procedure. Identify Conduct Disorder In Children

All children display oppositional or aggressive behavior from time to time, especially when they are upset, tired, or hungry. Oppositional behavior, such as arguing, lying, and disobeying, is a normal part of development for toddlers and early adolescents. When this behavior is frequent or excessive, affects the child’s home or school life, or violates the rights of others, a conduct disorder may be present.Conduct disorder is the most severe psychiatric disorder in childhood, and occurs more frequently in boys than in girls. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the disorder affects an estimated 1-4 percent of adolescents between the ages of 9 and 17 years. Children with this disorder repeatedly violate the rights of others, and display aggressive, destructive, and deceitful behavior. Identifying the signs and symptoms of conduct disorder, and beginning treatment as early in life as possible, is essential in order to prevent the disorder and prognosis from worsening.

1. Learn about the risk factors for developing conduct disorder, such as having a parent with a mood disorder, ADHD, substance abuse disorder, or conduct disorder. A history of abuse or neglect, exposure to violence, inconsistent or excessively harsh discipline, poverty, and overcrowded living conditions are other risk factors for conduct disorder.


2. Take note of any aggressive behavior, such as bullying, threatening, or intimidating others. Children with conduct disorder often initiate both verbal and physical fights, and have a history of violence and cruelty toward people and animals. More serious signs of aggressive behavior include the use of weapons and a history of sexual assault.


3. Consider whether prior destructive acts were intentional or unintentional. While all children have the potential to damage property due to carelessness or reckless play, children with conduct disorder deliberately cause damage to the property of others.








4. Watch carefully for other signs of conduct disorder, such as lying, theft, truancy, substance abuse, serious rule violations, and precocious sexual activity. Children with this disorder may also experience symptoms of depression, have poor relationships with family members and peers, and experience significant academic difficulties.








5. Speak with your child’s teacher to get her opinion, and discuss your child’s symptoms with a mental health professional who specializes in disorders of childhood. Read all you can about the symptoms of conduct disorder so that you are better able to identify the symptoms in your child.

The Properties Of Eucalyptus Wood

Eucalyptus lumber varies by species.


Members of the Eucalyptus genus, native to Australia and other parts of Oceania, are notable for the essential oils produced from their leaves. These trees are also used to produce a variety of different types of timber. Several different species are sold on the North American market, often labeled simply as "eucalyptus." These woods have some similarities, but can vary significantly in appearance and characteristics.


Eucalyptus Resinifera


Also called red mahogany eucalyptus, eucalypt, Australian red mahogany and kino eucalyptus, this tree is common in flooring, plywood and furniture construction. It may also be used for decorative veneers. Eucalyptus resinifera is extremely dense, with a rippling grain and a hardness of 2710 on the Janka scale, an industry standard comparison scale rating the hardness and duribility of wood. This tree produces pale cream sapwood and striking dark red heartwood with some resistance to termites. The wood is resinous and hard but easy to work, sand and polish.








Eucalyptus Diversicolor


Also known as karri wood, this tree is indigenous to western Australia, but has spread throughout Oceania and southeast Asia. It is often used for building construction, rafter, timbers, flooring and other applications that require very durable wood. Eucalyptus diversicolor has a hardness of 2030 on the Janka scale and produces reddish-brown heartwood with slightly paler sapwood. It has an interlocked grain that produces a striped appearance when quartersawn. This wood has poor dimensional stability and resists treatment with preservatives. It blunts cutting tools readily and is hard to saw and machine, but does glue and polish well.


Eucalyptus Obliqua


This eucalyptus is also called figured eucalyptus and brown-top stringbark. It can be used for a wide range of purposes, ranging from simple construction to fine furniture. Eucalyptus obliqua has a lower hardness rating than other species in its genus, rating only 1630 on the Janka scale, but is still harder than most North American hardwoods. This tree produces light brown to pale brown wood, sometimes with a pink tinge. The heartwood and sapwood are hard to distinguish. Even seasoned wood shows some movement over time, and the sapwood is vulnerable to beetle attack. Eucalyptus obliqua wood often suffers from gum veins and is relatively easy to work, though it tends to blunt tools.


Eucalyptus Citriodora


Also called lemon eucalyptus and lemon-scented gum, this species has historically been used for medicinal purposes, brushes, cabinetry and construction. It grows in Australia and Polynesia. Lemon eucalyptus scores 1798 on the Janka scale, and produces wide white to cream sapwood and light to dark brown heartwood with a straight or fiddleback grain. It does not resist termites or borers, but does perform well outdoors. Lemon eucalyptus often has greasy surfaces and may cause skin irritation in sensitive people. It saws, carves and works easily, but is hard to nail.

Determining when to move into a nursing home can be a difficult decision, and it's something that many seniors and their families struggle with. Most people want to maintain their independence as long as possible, but their safety can't be compromised. Family members as well as the senior often have differing opinions on what should be done making it even more of a challenge. Following these steps can help in determining decide when to live in a nursing home.

1. Get a physical and mental exam from a doctor. Your personal physician or a doctor who specializes in gerontology can give seniors assessments to determine their physical capabilities in managing daily living tasks by themselves as well as their mental status and abilities. 4. Hire a senior care manager. Families struggling with making the decision do have the option to hire a care manager to assist them. A person in this position works with the family to assess the senior's abilities to live independently, with assistance in a supported living environment or dependently in a nursing home. If a senior decides to remain in his home the care manager can arrange any services or resources he needs in order to manage his daily tasks and stay in his home. In addition, the care manager can continually reassess the senior over weeks, months and even years to determine if he is still independent or has physical and mental deterioration that requires placement in a nursing home.

How Long Does It Take For A Poison Oak Rash To Heal

The itching and scratching of poison oak is caused by urushiol oil, excreted by both the oak and its cousins poison ivy and poison sumac. Almost everyone is allergic to urushiol oil; when it gets on the skin, it causes itching, redness, swelling and terrible blisters. Scratching at a poison oak rash only makes things worse, because it spreads the oil further across the skin (including your fingers--which means it will spread to any patch of skin you touch). Poison oak rashes tend to appear in lines, corresponding to the place where you brushed against the plant. That's why it's important to keep your arms and legs covered when moving through areas that contain poison oak, and to wash any clothing you wear--with hot water and detergent--as soon as you possibly can.


Healing Period


The healing period for poison oak varies depending on the extent of exposure and any complications which may develop. In most cases, the rash starts to appear within 48 hours. It typically lasts from one to two weeks, but can last up to three weeks or longer in some cases. When the rash is severe, it may spread further after a few days. Some people believe that such spreading is caused by fluid oozing from popped blisters, but it's probably due to secondary exposure from scratching or similar circumstances. If the rash lasts longer than three weeks and still isn't healing, contact a doctor. You should also contact a doctor if you develop a fever, if your blisters ooze pus instead of clear fluid or if the rash affects sensitive parts of the body like your eyes or mouth.








Treatments


Treating poison oak has a bearing on how long the rash and itching go on. The aim is to control the symptoms: Reduce the urge to scratch the itch and keep the redness and swelling from becoming a problem until they have time to heal. The best nonprescription medications include corticosteroid creams (like hydrocortisone), aloe vera gel, calamine lotion or anything with menthol as an ingredient. They soothe the skin and (in the case of corticosteroids) help address the allergy directly. In some cases, oral antihistamines can be helpful as well. In the worst cases, scratching can cause a bacterial infection, which requires antibiotics and a doctor's care to properly treat. You may also wish to get prescription-strength corticosteroids if your doctor feels it is warranted. If the rash isn't so bad, you can use home remedies such as cold compresses or colloidal oatmeal baths to help reduce the symptoms.

2. Refrain from eating solid food when you're throwing up. Sip fluids like water instead or suck on ice chips. If you've been vomiting a lot, sip an oral rehydration liquid to maintain your fluid levels. These special fruit-flavored drinks or Popsicles replace the carbohydrates and electrolytes your body has lost and needs to replenish.


3. Sip cold lime juice or hot peppermint tea, two home remedies said to effectively stop vomiting.


Heat two cardamom seeds in a dry pan. Powder them and add 1 tsp. of honey. Take frequently to soothe the stomach.


Mix 1 tsp. mint juice and 1 tsp. lime juice with 1/2 tsp. ginger juice and add 1 tsp. of honey. Small sips can help ease nausea.


4. Make some peppermint tea and take it with fresh onion juice to combat nausea.


Grate an onion; its juice is cited in traditional Indian medicine as a panacea against throwing up. Squeeze the pulp through a cloth or paper towel to make one tablespoon.


Drink the onion juice. Sip a tablespoon of the peppermint tea.


Wait 10 minutes and sip more tea. The vomiting should have stopped.


Follow in 15 minutes with another sip of tea. It will help rehydrate you.


5. Breathe deeply to relax or try meditation to control the urge to vomit.








Walk outside to breathe fresh air or shift your body position to refresh your muscles.

Cholesterol Free Diet Foods

Finding cholesterol-free diet foods that fit your lifestyle is tough but not impossible. To maintain a healthy cholesterol level, you must take every bite of food into consideration; simply looking for a "cholesterol free" or "trans fat free" label in the grocery store won't cut it. Fruits and veggies have lots of dietary fiber, and that helps lower cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association. Fruit purees can also be used as substitutes in recipes. Applesauce in muffins or oatmeal cookies and bananas in bread are replacements for cholesterol-laden oils. Raw fruits are a great replacement for high-fat snacks and some fruits, like apples, are high in fiber, which keeps you full.


Whole Grains


Whole grains are a staple to any diet and can be incorporated into any meal. Instead of buying white bread, buy whole wheat--these alternatives have no dietary cholesterol. Instead of white pasta, opt for whole grain. White rice can also be replaced with brown. Nowadays, many cereals and snacks are also available in whole grain options. By replacing "white" with "wheat" you can keep yourself fuller and feel good about choosing the lower-cholesterol alternative. Beware of bakery items, like muffins and donuts. Although they may be labeled as "whole wheat," they are full of cholesterol due to their ingredients.


Eggs


Eggs are full of protein and are great at breakfast or for a snack. However, the yolks are high in cholesterol and full of calories. This is where preparation plays a role--egg whites are a cholesterol-free snack, according to the Mayo Clinic. Hard boil eggs and remove the yolks for a low-fat, high protein snack. Crack eggs and remove the yolk when scrambling for breakfast. Add vegetables and a piece of whole wheat toast, and you've got yourself a cholesterol-free start to the day.


If a recipe calls for eggs, use the egg whites instead. Many recipes come out tasting just as delicious without the yolk. Remember: one whole egg equals two egg whites.

Forms Of Skin Cancer







Of all cancers, skin cancer is the most common in the United States. The cause of the three most common, basal cell, squamous and melanoma is primarily long-term sun exposure, particularly severe sunburns. Kaposi's Sarcoma and Paget's Disease are less common forms of skin cancer. Lymphoma can also develop in the skin, but this condition is only found in about one out of 40 patients with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.


Basal Cell Carcinoma


This cancer is the most common. It normally occurs on skin subjected to sunlight. It often starts as a small and shiny raised growth that usually enlarges very slowly, although some can grow as much as 1/2 inch in a year. In some cases the growth may be pale red or look like a scar. It can resemble a sore that scabs over rather than a cancer.


Squamous Cell Carcinoma


This cancer is usually found on sunlight-affected skin as well, although it can appear in the mouth. It starts as a thick and scaly growth with an irregular appearance. Fair-skinned people are more susceptible to this cancer than dark-skinned.








Melanoma


This cancer begins in the pigment-producing skin cells (melanocytes). It can start on normal skin or in an already existing pigmented mole. Appearance varies from flat irregular patches to raised spots with multicolors.


Kaposi's Sarcoma


This cancer creates multiple patches that can be red, brown or purple. It is caused by herpes virus type eight. Older men of Mediterranean or Jewish origin may be prone to this. People with AIDS can also develop Kaposi's.


Paget's Disease


Paget's is a rare skin cancer originating under the skin or in glands. It usually forms on the nipple from a cancer of breast milk ducts that has spread to the skin. Men and women can both get this cancer. It may develop in the genital area or around the anus, as well. It looks red and oozes, then crusts.


Skin Lymphoma


Also called Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma, this is a rare cancer and is a form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Symptoms include dry and scaly skin with a red rash and often accompanying itching. The patches may grow and increase in height even turning into nodular tumors.


Warning


Any change in an existing mole or new skin growth should be examined by a dermatologist. Even the most dangerous melanoma can be cured if it is caught before it grows more than 1/32 of an inch into the skin. Once the surface is larger than the eraser on a pencil, it becomes much more difficult to control. The potential danger of any skin cancer is not a subject for self-diagnosis or treatment. Yellow Topaz

About Yellow Topaz


Yellow topaz is semiprecious gemstone that forms in orthorhombic crystals. It is the birthstone for November. Its name comes from Sanskrit and means "fire." The Egyptians believed that topaz stones were droplets of sunlight, and the Romans associated yellow topaz with the sun god Jupiter. Many cultures believed the stone contains the magic healing and illuminating energies of the sun, making topaz a perfect stone to light up dark November days.


Precious and Imperial


The yellow topaz has many hues, from barely colored "champagne topaz" to intense orange-brown "imperial topaz". As a jewelry gem, topaz is brilliant and durable with a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale. It is sometimes called the "sunset stone" because of its glorious range of colors from pale yellow to lemon to the deep russet orange of the sunset sky.


History


In Biblical history, topaz was one of the 12 stones set into the breastplate of Aaron, representing the tribe of Simeon. One very famous topaz is the Braganza, a giant topaz set in the crown of Portugal. It is so clear, it was originally thought to be a diamond. There is also an exquisite set of topaz in the Green Vault in Dresden, one of the important gem collections of the world.


Properties


Topaz, with its hardness of 8, is brittle and must be cut carefully, as it has a tendency to split along crystalline planes. It can fracture or develop flaws if dealt a strong blow. Its chemical formula is Al2SiO4(F,OH)2, its composition known as aluminum fluoro-hydroxyl-silicate. It is insoluble in acids. Most commercial topaz comes from Brazil, and can weigh hundreds of pounds. Excellent gems are also found in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. In the USA, yellow topaz is found most often in Colorado and Utah.


Birthstones


The wearing of birthstones dates from the 18th century and probably started in Poland before spreading throughout Europe. Yellow topaz was the original birthstone of November, although yellow citrine is now also recognized for this month.


Folklore


Egyptians wore yellow topaz as an amulet against injury. The ancient Greeks believed that yellow topaz increased a man's strength and could make the wearer invisible. The Romans endowed it with the power to improve eyesight. During the Middle Ages topaz was believed to be a healing stone for both physical and mental disorders. It was even thought to prevent death.

If you have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, you may have been told you will need to make changes in your diet. What will this involve? There are several schools of thought on the subject. They all felt their MS would not be cured by dietary changes, but were happy enough with the benefits of eating healthier, that they would stay with their new eating habits.

Heal A Sprained Wrist Quickly

Anyone with an active lifestyle is bound to experience the pain of strains and/or sprains at some point in their lives. The wrist is an area especially prone to this type of injury, due to instability and overuse. Wrist sprains can easily be treated by following the well-known RICE protocol--rest, ice, compress, elevate.


Instructions


1. Rest your wrist. This means not using it for any activities, especially for the first 24 to 48 hours after the initial injury. The more complete rest you can give the area, the quicker it will heal. Trying to push through the pain is never a good idea and will only serve to lengthen the injury time and possibly worsen your condition.








Once the pain has subsided, slowly start using the wrist in activities that put very little pressure or weight on it. Of course, if pain resumes, back off any activity and resume complete rest.


2. Ice the injured wrist. For the first 48 to 72 hours, ice the area three to four times daily for 20-minute periods of time. Icing will help to lower inflammation levels in the area and assist healing.








3. Compress. Wrap the wrist with an Ace bandage. Start at the base of the fingers and wrap all the way up to the top of the forearm. Overlap the wrap by 1/2 to 1 inch as you are going up the arm. Acupressure For Weight Loss

Ying Tang


This pressure point is directly in the middle of the nose. Look in a mirror again to find it. Visualize that a line has been drawn directly down the middle of your nose. The pressure point will be slightly above the inner corner of the eyes in the middle of the nose. Pain might be experienced but continue rubbing for 1 minute. By the time the minute is over, the pain should have eased.


Point GV26


This pressure point should be easy to find but use a mirror if necessary. It is located in the indentation above the top curve of the lip and below the nostrils. Feel for the raised flesh; that is the pressure point. Apply gentle but firm downward strokes for 1 minute. Be careful not to press too hard because this tissue is sensitive and too much pressure could cause bleeding of the gums or front teeth underneath the skin.


Point CV17


Pressure point CV17 is located on the sternum, halfway between the nipple line. Find a comfortable position either sitting or laying down while applying pressure to this point. Apply firm but gentle pressure in upward strokes for 2 minutes. This area might be more sensitive to pain than some of the others, but the pain should pass after a few moments.
