Identify Symptoms Of A Brain Stroke

A brain stroke, or brain attack, is caused by a sudden and drastic decrease in the amount of blood flowing to the brain. This causes damage and affects many different body organs and tissues. Sometimes, this interruption of blood flow is caused by a clot that travels through the bloodstream, or may be caused by narrowed arteries in the brain itself. Often, a stroke is caused by bleeding inside the brain or the space that is found between the brain and the skull, putting pressure on the brain.Risks of stroke or brain attack increase with age, especially in males over the age of 55, and is often also increased with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Learning to identify symptoms of a brain stroke may save your life and prevent serious and long term complications and decrease in metal health.

Instructions

1. Always be observant of your own body and ranges of normality in family and friends. Often, symptoms of brain stroke will be different in individuals, depending on age, gender, physical health and other issues. One of the first signs of something wrong with the brain or central nervous system is a sudden difficulty speaking. Some individuals may have difficulty forming words or using words correctly. Often, this sudden inability is met with confusion and dismay. Any sudden inability to form cohesive words or sentences should be assessed by a physician as soon as possible.

2. Pay attention to your body. If you suddenly discover that you have difficulty moving fingers, toes or hands or feet on one side of the body, or that the facial muscles on one side of the face seem lopsided or slow to respond to facial gestures, seek help immediately.

3. Watch for a sudden heavy feeling in an arm or leg or a feeling of tingling or numbness that seems moderate to severe, especially if you have never felt anything like that before. This sensation may or may not be accompanied by an inability to move or control the arm or leg as usual.

4. Watch for any type of changes in vision or sudden, severe headaches. Sometimes, headaches will affect only one side of the head.

5. Sudden loss of bladder or bowel control is another major symptom of a brain stroke or attack.

What Type Of Disease Is Lupus

Lupus is a disease of the autoimmune system. The bodies cells turn and attack each other. Lupus affects the organ systems, skin, joints and internal organs. Sufferers of this disease are often misdiagnosed because the symptoms are similar to other conditions. Often they are denied disability benefits due to the lack of proper diagnosis and an underestimation of the seriousness of the condition.

Symptoms

Chronic fatigue is a common complaint of lupus sufferers. This is also a symptom of depression. The physical cause of the fatigue is often hard to detect. The lupus sufferer is constantly tired and does not know why.

A butterfly-shaped rash forms on the face and other areas of the skin. Many times this is dismissed as acne or another skin condition.

Pain in the joints imitates that of arthritis but does not deform the bones in the same way. Tendons loosen from the bones causing weakness and discomfort.

According to Dr. Michelle Petri, M.D. with Johns Hopkins, "In lupus patients, we are often overlooking fibromyalgia. Thirty percent of my patients have fibromyalgia. It is a resetting of the pain thermostat in the brain." This can effect memory loss in the lupus patient.

Many people with lupus lose their hair.

Types

As an autoimmune disease, lupus is not alone. Other autoimmune diseases are common and more readily diagnosed. Diabetes and thyroid conditions are also autoimmune diseases.

There are different types of lupus. Systemic lupus erythematosus affects joints and organs. A person with discoid lupus would be experimenting symptoms primarily on the skin. Those with sub-acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus show non-scarring skin lesions. Sometimes lupus is drug-induced. This type is called drug-induced lupus. Neonatal lupus is a disease that affects newborns

Treatment

Anti-inflamatory drugs like ibuprofen or plaquenil can be used to treat those with mild symptoms. This relieves joint pain and inflamation, fatigue and skin rashes.

For more severe symptoms, doctors may treat with high dose corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs in the case of severe organ complications. The side effects of these stronger drugs must be evaluated and decided between the doctor and the patient before treatment begins.

Extent

Estimates range between 237,000 and 1.5 million people that have lupus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 70 percent of the cases are systemic. Half of those cases show a major organ affected.

Lupus is two to three times more prevalent among people of color, including African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Native Americans, according to the Lupus Foundation of America.

Warning

Keeping hope during the fight against the disease can be challenging. Depression and discouragement are obstacles sufferers must overcome if they are to lead a normal life. With proper diagnosis and treatment the disease is now more manageable than in years past. Those with lupus have the chance to live long lives and enjoy many of the things others do if they seek treatment and keep hope.

Make Ecofriendly Choices

You might have heard the term "carbon footprint" being used by everyone from scientists and business professionals to elementary school teachers and students. It refers to our individual impact on ecological battlefronts like waste management and alternative fuels. Yet, some believe that being eco-friendly has become too commercialized as an alternative lifestyle. Going green does not have to mean going to the extreme. There are some simple ways to make eco-friendly choices without drastically changing your life. Subtle changes in our habits at home, the foods we eat and the products we buy can make a big difference over all.

Instructions

The Eco-Friendly Lifestyle

1. Make eco-friendly choices at home.

You can start by switching out all your light bulbs for energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. This can slash your electricity consumption and your energy bill at the same time. Just be sure to turn off those energy saving bulbs when you leave the room. To conserve water, take shorter showers and turn the faucets off while you're brushing your teeth. Instead of turning on the outside hose to water your garden, collect rainwater in garbage cans. Cutting down on water consumption will not only save on the water bill, but it also reduces our stress on lakes, rivers and streams.

According to an Ace Hardware statistic, "Most people in North America use 50 to 70 gallons of water indoors each day, with over 75 percent of all water being used in the bathroom. We use another 50 to 70 gallons outdoors, depending on the season."

2. Make eco-friendly choices with recycling.

Be sure to arrange and organize your trash in separate recycling bins. You should have each one for glass, plastic, aluminum and paper. Even if your city or district does not offer door-to-door recycling services, most places still have a central recycling center nearby. Make a conscious effort to buy recycled products, as well. This small gesture can help make the transition from wasteful habits to eco-friendly choices that much easier. You can find greeting cards, napkins, office paper and even plastic bottles made from recycled materials.

According to the National Recycling Coalition, "A typical family consumes 182 gallons of soda, 29 gallons of juice, 104 gallons of milk and 26 gallons of bottled water a year." Recycling the containers from all of these beverages will have a big impact on the environment.

3. Make eco-friendly food choices.

Buying fresh, organic foods has become an increasingly popular eco-friendly choice. Organic foods contain little to no pesticides, additives or preservatives. Try shopping at your local farmer's market where local vegetables are sold or shop at a new age grocer like the Whole Foods Market.

According to the Organic Trade Association's (OTA's) 2004 Manufacturer Survey, "Whole Foods Market in Monterey, California, has designed a school lunch program that it is pitching to private schools around Monterey County. As a result, All Saints Episcopal Day School in Carmel Valley, signed up for the program which features lunches offering organic products whenever possible and avoiding the use of hydrogenated fats, artificial colors, flavors and preservatives."

4. Make eco-friendly clothing choices.

Buy fewer clothing items and use them for a longer period of time. Repair damaged clothes and pass on items that no longer fit. You can also make eco-friendly clothing choices by purchasing fabrics made from natural materials like bamboo and organic cotton.

According to the Organic Trade Association's 2007 Manufacturer's Survey, "Organic fiber linens and clothing sales in the United States grew by 26 percent over the previous year, to reach $203 million."

How Does Relaxation Breathing Help

Breathing correctly can relax the body and the mind.

Breathing in a controlled pattern, like that in pranayama yoga, is thought of as a way to bring in energy. This energy can be used for healing, relaxation and meditation.

Healing

Yoga is used in the art of pranayama. In yoga, breathing goes along with the movements of the body into different positions. This type of breathing is healing because, according to the book "Pranayama & the Art of Breathing," it stimulates the nervous system.

Stress Relief

Meditation is a highly recommended form of stress relief. According to "The Directory of Complementary Therapies," the focus put on breathing in order to relax during meditation can slow the heart rate and be of great value to those who suffer from high blood pressure. Meditation also gives the body time to unwind and forget about daily troubles, which is why it helps relieve stress.

Oxygen Intake

Relaxation breathing also helps regulate oxygen intake. This can help someone who suffers from panic attacks or even insomnia. Concentrating on breathing rather than the thing that is disturbing the body can help one forget and relax. Deep breathing exercises, like those used in labor, can help reduce the effect of panic attacks, according to "The Directory of Complimentary Therapies."

What Are The Side Effects Of Mangosteen Juice

Mangosteen juice is a popular nutritional supplement, well-known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant benefits. Like other "super" fruits, mangosteen is generally considered safe, but frequent prolonged use may bring about side effects or interactions.

Acidosis

According to one case report, there may be a link between prolonged daily intake of mangosteen juice and an increased risk of acidosis, which is an acidity of the blood plasma (see link in Resources).

Loose Stools

Some people, especially those with irritable bowel syndrome, may experience loose stools after drinking any kind of juice, especially those containing high levels of antioxidants.

Allergies

Some people may be allergic to mangosteen juice, especially if they have other fruit allergies. Symptoms include rash, nausea and vomiting.

Cancer Treatment

Antioxidants, like those found in mangosteen, help to prevent cancer. However, they may actually interfere with cancer treatment, since chemotherapy relies on free radicals to destroy cancer cells.

Preventing Side Effects

Most side effects from mangosteen juice are mild, and they can be prevented or mitigated by taking a lower dose. One oz. per day or less is generally recommended.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Sample Diets

Living with irritable bowel syndrome can be a tricky affair. The random ravages of IBS can drastically and negatively impact your social and professional lives. Fortunately, however, you can gain some measure of control over the disease by strictly regulating your diet.

Rules of IBS Eating

The most important rule of eating for IBS sufferers is to make soluble fiber the backbone of any meal. Eat foods containing soluble fiber anytime you feel your stomach is getting empty; these foods also should make up the lion's share of any snack or meal.

Limiting fat intake is also crucial. No greater than 25 percent of your daily caloric intake should come from fat, and pay special focus to consuming sufficient monounsaturates.

Keep consumption of high-fat food to a bare minimum, and never eat high-fat foods on an empty stomach.

Remove any "trigger" foods from your diet--such as coffee, dairy, red meat, fried food, alcohol, soda and egg yolks.

Do not eat insoluble fiber when your stomach is empty, and always chop insoluble foods into small pieces (or cook them completely) to lessen the risk.

Eat smaller meals every two to three hours.

Never eat an item if you are unsure of the possible risk and currently unwilling to find out.

Use substitution instead of deprivation--where you cannot eat an egg yolk, use two egg whites instead. Remember that your body still requires adequate food to function, so provide it within the necessary framework.

Put These Rules Into Play

So, now that you know the rules of the game, use them to create some sample diets.

Breakfast can consist of a cereal of your choice accompanied by three or four egg whites, along with an orange or any other fruit you feel comfortable eating. The cereal will provide plenty of insoluble fiber; the egg whites provide quality protein; and the fruit will contribute vitamins and nutrients. If you like, you can even add in a lower-fat meat like turkey bacon or turkey sausage to round out the meal.

Lunch can consist of a grilled chicken breast with a sizable portion of rice and a garden salad on the side with olive oil dressing. The rice will fulfill your soluble fiber requirements, while the chicken gives more protein. The olive oil provides heart-healthy fats, and the salad gives quality nutrients.

For dinner, try a lightly breaded (not fried) piece of tilapia, salmon or whatever your favorite fish happens to be. Have a sweet potato on the side with a light amount of butter, and another salad generously drizzled with olive oil. Fish will provide more healthy fats and protein; the potato will keep everything digesting smoothly with soluble fiber; and the salad will provide the aforementioned benefits.

In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner, try including a couple of snacks during the day to keep your stomach from becoming completely empty. Egg whites on toast is an easy meal to prepare that conforms to your dietary restrictions. Or perhaps you'd prefer some nuts like almonds, walnuts or macadamias.

While IBS can be a struggle, it doesn't mean you can't have culinary delights. The sample diet listed would make a healthy eating plan for anyone, and is not unduly restrictive in any capacity. With energy and perseverance, you can overcome your limitations and make constantly fretting over your IBS a thing of the past.

Stiff Necks

About Stiff Necks

Neck stiffness is a common problem for many people, because it can be caused by sports activities, sitting at a desk all day and talking on the phone without a headset. When you don't take the time to stretch your muscles, adjust your positioning or protect your neck with a supportive pillow while you sleep, you can develop neck pain, which can develop further into neck stiffness. When you have neck stiffness, it can be difficult to move your head from side to side, so it negatively affects your mobility.

Significance

Neck stiffness can affect your mobility as well as your mood. When your neck muscles become so tight that you cannot move your head from side to side, you might be unable to get out of bed, to go to work and to drive. In addition, the pain and lack of mobility can cause you to become frustrated, stressed and angry.

Symptoms

When you have neck stiffness, you might experience a grating sensation when you try to turn your head. If you were in an accident and experienced whiplash, you might have temporary or long-term neck problems. Sometimes you might have swollen glands, fever, headache or nausea along with your neck stiffness. It's also common to have a tingling or sharp pain that starts at your neck and travels down your back.

Causes

Usually the levator scapula is the muscle associated with a stiff neck. Sometimes the cause of neck stiffness is simply sleeping in an awkward position during the night. Whenever you have your joints in one position for a long period of time, they can become stiff and achy. Another cause is arthritis, accidents and falls. More serious causes are from illnesses such as the influenza, polio and meningitis.

Prevention/Solution

Frequent stretching such as rolling your neck from side to side can prevent your neck from becoming stiff while you are sitting at your desk at work. Massage and acupuncture can also help target specific muscles that have become knotted and tight. If you play vigorous sports, you might want to take ample time off so your muscles can heal. If you have been in an accident, you should follow the doctor's orders and find out about rehabilitation so you return to your previous state of mobility. Stiff necks are common, but sometimes all your neck needs is time and relaxation to return to normal.

Warning

The cold weather can affect your muscles and cause them to restrict even more, which can further tighten your neck. Also, if you don't have a proper pillow to support your neck, you will most likely continue to experience a stiff neck when you wake up. When you have a stiff neck along with swollen glands, a fever, nausea or headache, it's best to visit a doctor to rule out any serious illnesses such as meningitis.

Treat A Finger If Swollen From A Ring

A swollen ring finger is annoying and painful.

A swollen ring finger can be painful as well as annoying. Swelling occurs in limbs and joints for a variety of reasons, excess fluid, an injury, an allergic reaction, disease, or a side effect of medication. Your fingers, as well as other limbs and joints, may be more susceptible to swelling at different times during the day. One of the first things to do is to relax and allow the swelling to go down. If the swelling persists there are a number of other things to do help relieve the swelling and remove the ring.

Instructions

1. Sit in a chair and elevate your hand. Keeping the hand with the swollen finger elevated above your heart decreases the blood flow to the finger. Sit in the chair and lift your arm above your head. Rest your wrist on the back of the chair behind your head in a comfortable position. Another option is to simply rest your hand on top of your head. Keep the hand elevated and watch a good movie.

2. Wrap ice in a cloth or wash cloth. Place the ice pack on the swollen finger. Leave it on the finger for 10 minutes. Remove the ice pack for several minutes and then repeat the procedure.

3. Lubricate the ring and swollen finger with soap, oil or lotion. Work the lubricant into your finger and around the ring. Gently twist and pull the ring and try to remove it from your finger. If you pull too aggressively on the ring, you may only increase the swelling.

4. Take an over the counter anti-inflammatory medicine. Take the recommended amount and wait for the medicine to take effect.

Signs & Symptoms Of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks and destroys the protective covering on the nerves. The signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis depend on the extent of the nerve damage and which nerves are damaged. Some people lose their ability to talk and walk, and others may experience only a few symptoms that come and go. The signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary greatly, and there are many of them.

Visual Signs and Symptoms

Visual changes are often the first symptoms that a person experiences. These visual changes include alterations in color, blurry vision, double vision, and flashing lights. Moving the eyes can also become uncomfortable or painful. These vision changes are often due to a condition called optic neuritis. Optic neuritis is an inflammation of the optic nerve and can lead to permanent visual defects.

Pain, Weakness, Numbness and Limited Mobility

Those with multiple sclerosis often experience pain, weakness, numbness, and limited mobility. Pain affects over half of all multiple sclerosis patients. In most patients, the pain is chronic and quite severe. Muscle spasticity, a severe tightness of the muscles, can also lead to pain. Pain is most often experienced in the back, neck, legs, ribs, face, and hands. This pain is often described as stabbing, burning, and sharp. The weakness associated with multiple sclerosis is often severe and tends to get worse as time goes on. This weakness can make it difficult for patients to do everyday things like walking, lifting small objects, opening bottles, and standing up. The numbness associated with multiple sclerosis tends to come and go. It is most often experienced in the face, arms, hands/fingers, legs, and feet/toes. The loss of mobility is mostly due to the pain, weakness, and numbness. Since these three symptoms can get quite severe, it leads to patients' decreasing their levels of mobility. Over time this can lead to muscle atrophy and paralysis.

Cognitive Signs and Symptoms

Those suffering from multiple sclerosis will often experience cognitive signs and symptoms. These include personality changes, memory loss, and depression. Though rare, some patients experience multiple sclerosis-related euphoria as well.

Fatigue

Almost all multiple sclerosis patients experience some degree of fatigue. Many patients' fatigue is so severe that they need to take several short naps throughout the day to function properly. It is unclear whether or not the degree of fatigue is related to other symptoms, but many patients do experience an increase in fatigue when their symptoms worsen.

Other Signs and Symptoms

There are other later signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis, but not all patients experience them. They tend to come on after a person has had the disease for some time. These signs and symptoms include sexual dysfunction, tremors, constipation, paralysis, incontinence, vertigo, loss of bladder and bowel control, and difficulty swallowing or speaking.

Cover The Smell Of Cigarette Breath

Don't cover your mouth. There are ways to eliminate cigarette breath.

You can usually tell a smoker by their breath. Not only do smokers get bad breath from the tobacco, but smoking dries out the mouth, which can lead to bad breath. Smokers are at risk for periodontal disease, as well, states the Mayo Clinic, which is another cause of bad breath. Quitting smoking is the best option to get rid of your smoker's breath. You can also try some remedies that will help clean your mouth and eliminate the odor.

Instructions

1. Chew gum. Gum comes in many flavors, like cinnamon and peppermint, thus the gum can mask the unpleasant odor. MedicineNet.com states that chewing gum also causes more saliva to be produced, which in turn washes away bacteria that can cause bad breath.

2. Brush your teeth after smoking, if possible. This will remove bacteria and odors from your mouth. Many toothpastes are made specifically for bad breath.

3. Use a mouthwash made for bad breath. Rinse your mouth after smoking to eliminate the odor. Look for an antiseptic mouth rinse that not only gets rid of bad breath, but also kills germs that cause it.

4. Munch on a sprig of parsley. This herb contains chlorophyll, which aids in freshening bad breath. Parsley also has antibacterial properties. You can chew on it for five minutes; then swallow, or spit it out.

5. Use cloves for freshening your breath. Brush your gums and your tongue with powdered cloves. Cloves have antiseptic properties that can reduce bad breath. You can also chew a clove after each cigarette.

Uterine Fibroid Form

Introduction

Uterine fibroids are benign growths in the uterus. Fibroids have many names, such as myomas and fibromyomas. These types of growths are very common in woman during their reproductive years. Researchers estimate that 50 to 75 percent of all women get fibroids. Women can have one or many fibroids ranging in size from tiny growths to large masses. Although most women have fibroids, the majority are unaware they have these growths because there aren't any symptoms. In most cases no treatment is required even with mild symptoms. But for some women the symptoms are debilitating and medical treatment or surgery is necessary.

How Uterine Fibroids Form

Doctors are not sure why uterine fibroids form, but there are a few factors that may contribute to their growth. Female hormones probably play a role. To prepare the uterus for menstruation the ovaries create estrogen and progesterone. Researchers have discovered that fibroids contain more estrogen than the surrounding uterine tissue, leading them to speculate that estrogen helps in the development of fibroids. In addition to hormones, chemicals may help in the formation. There are substances in the body like insulin that help to maintain tissue. Changes in insulin levels could lead to uterine fibroids forming. Even genetics is considered a viable cause of fibroids. Researchers have noticed modifications in the gene code of fibroids that differ from the code for normal uterine muscle tissue. Abnormalities in the growth rate of tissues and in the blood vessels have also been suggested as a cause of fibroids. According to the Mayo Clinic website, "Uterine fibroids develop from the smooth muscular tissue of the uterus (myometrium). A single cell reproduces repeatedly, eventually creating a pale, firm, rubbery mass distinct from neighboring tissue." A woman has an increased chance of getting uterine fibroids based on heredity and race. If fibroids run in a family, this increases a woman's risk. Also African-American women have a two to three times higher risk of developing fibroids than women of other races.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

There are several common symptoms of uterine fibroids and most occurring during a woman's period. The type of symptom depends on the size and location of the fibroid. One of the main symptoms or signs that a fibroid is present is heavy bleeding during a period. Prolonged menstrual cycles are also common. Another symptom is bleeding between menstrual cycles. These symptoms usually indicate the fibroid is in the lining or wall of the uterus. Larger fibroids can cause a host of symptoms, including abdominal pain. If the fibroid is large enough it can extend outside the uterus and press against the bladder, causing frequent urination and incontinence. Large fibroids can protrude to the back of the uterus and press against the spinal column or rectum, causing back pain and constipation.

Laser Wrinkle Reduction

From 1997 to 2007 the total number of cosmetic procedures performed in the US rose by over 9 million. From the the dermatologist and plastic surgery centers to anti-aging skin care products, treatments to promote younger looking skin are highly popular and available. Cosmetic laser surgery was at one time solely for the upscale, ultra-cosmopolitan consumer market but has become nearly as common to the average skin-care regimen as eye creams. In addition to diminishing and removing skin hyperpigmentation, scars, stretch marks and spider veins, laser treatment is also used for the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser wrinkle reduction is achieved by laser resurfacing procedures. These non-invasive cosmetic procedures use high-intensity precision laser light generated from advanced technology and technique to target the fine lines and wrinkles of the skin, commonly around the eyes and mouth. Doctors remove and replace skin tissue without surgical incision.

How it Works

Depending on the depth of the lines and wrinkles and the laser technology used, the doctor performing the laser wrinkle reduction will target the laser to a certain depth and dissolve or destroy old skin cells and push the new skin cells upward and outward. The treatment induces new collagen growth and tightens the collagen fibers, which also fill in wrinkles, reducing their depth and diminishing their appearance.

Effectiveness

Regarding laser resurfacing, the question is not whether it is effective, but how long before desired results are achieved. The depth and quantity of the fine lines and wrinkles to be removed determines how many visits are required. The standard visit takes 30 minutes to an hour. The depth of the wrinkles also determines the increments between visits, since there is often some post-laser healing time required, which may require up to 30 days of ointment application and laser-free care. Procedures aren't painful and do not usually require anesthetics. The patient, at the most, might feel a slight pinch with the targeted laser beams.

Sources of Laser Treatment

Increased demand and availability of this service has earned the attention of the Department of Public Health (DPH), since dermatologists are no longer the only source of laser treatments. The number of "Medical Spas" or "MedSpas" has increased to over 2,500 in the US, and these businesses, which combine salon and spa treatments with medical cosmetic procedures, offer laser resurfacing. Nonmedical practitioners, such as aestheticians, cosmetologists and electrologists may offer such treatments, but the DPH and other regulatory medical organizations plan to enforce laws that ensure special training and certification to legally administer any form of laser treatment. The safest current route for laser wrinkle reduction (also the route that guarantees the latest in laser technology and technique precision) is to have the procedure performed in the dermatologist's office or plastic surgery center by medical doctors.

Alternatives

Microdermabrasion is another non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a skin "sanding" device with fine teeth to sweep exfoliating crystals across the skin, sloughing off dead skin cells and exposing a fresher, more even-toned outer layer of skin. Microdermabrasion kits for home-application are available from most cosmetics companies, such as L'Oreal and Neutrogena. While this is a less expensive alternative and easier on the skin, visible effects may require more treatment than with laser surgery. Chemical peels are another method for reducing wrinkles, and while at-home chemical peels are available, the concentration of acids in the products make the dermatologist the optimal and safer choice for administering the procedure. For people with more intense signs of aging and who desire the fastest and most dramatic results, there are plastic surgery options, such as a face lift.

Warning

While laser wrinkle reduction is effective and has its advantages, the laser procedures are not risk-free. Scarring, infection, and skin discoloration are results of unskilled and inexperienced renderings of the procedure and negligent post-operative care.

List Of Caffeinefree Foods

Caffeine shows up in many beverages and foods in the American diet. The smell of coffee permeates restaurants, walkways near coffee shops and workplace break rooms. Many holidays and parties involve prominent displays of chocolates, desserts and drinks laced with chocolate and sometimes coffee. In many places espresso bars outnumber bars serving alcohol. For anyone needing or wanting to avoid or reduce caffeine, it helps to learn about caffeine-free food and beverage options.

Beverages

Coffee substitutes can help ease the transition to a caffeine-free diet. Health food stores carry numerous teas and grain beverages designed to provide full-bodied flavor without the caffeine. Read labels as some may contain caffeine from black tea. Some substitute beverages made from herbs and roasted grains give a satisfying taste without the caffeine.

The Villanova University Office of Health Promotion website points out that coffee is addictive and that withdrawal symptoms include headaches and drowsiness. If reducing caffeine gradually is an option, the side effects may be reduced.

Decaffeinated coffee and other beverages can still contain some caffeine. Color isn't an indicator of whether or not a beverage has caffeine. Always check the label.

Desserts

The Seek Wellness website advises that all foods made with chocolate contain caffeine, and that restricting caffeine may help with overactive bladder and other urinary problems.

Many candies, ice creams, sauces, cakes and cookies contain chocolate. Watch for any form of chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, cocoa, mocha (coffee and chocolate) or espresso. Desserts made with fresh fruit are usually a caffeine-free choice. Choose sorbets, fruit ices, apple sauce and fruit salad.

Carob, also known as St. John's bread, provides natural sweetening and can be used in place of chocolate in recipes. Health food stores carry cookies, brownies and other baked goods made with carob. Roasted carob powder makes a cocoa substitute, although the flavor is different from chocolate.

The Ohio State University's Medical Center's No Cardiac Stimulant Diet limits chocolate to one small serving per day of certain foods and beverages. Consult with your health care provider to make the best choices for your situation.

Whole Foods

Whole, unprocessed foods provide a good source of healthy, caffeine-free nutrition. Purchasing foods in their natural state reduces the risk of eating undesirable additives such as caffeine, sugars, hormones, preservatives and other ingredients that could affect the heart or blood sugar.

Choose fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. Add beans, peas and nuts. Eggs and dairy foods provide caffeine-free choices, except for flavored yogurts with coffee or chocolate added. Read the label before purchasing flavored yogurts.

Avoid cereals with chocolate flavorings and any product with coffee, espresso or tea listed in the ingredients.

Alcohol Related Memory Loss

One of the dangers of consuming too much alcohol is the possibility of blacking out and experiencing a period of temporary memory loss or amnesia. Blackouts and memory loss are very common for alcoholics. For a person to experience the negative side effect of memory loss, they would have to be drinking alcohol like an alcoholic, in essence, numerous times a day, every single day of the week. Many people interpret excessive blackouts and memory loss to be early "high risk indicators" of alcoholism.

Function

Alcohol has strong, far-reaching effects on many parts of the brain. When alcohol is consumed, immediately the body starts the process of breaking it down. As this happens, breakdown substances called ethyl esters accelerate the motion of positively charged potassium ions from the brain cells into the outer membranes. This causes a negative charge inside of the brain cells, which slightly damages the body's calcium channels. Brain cells depend on the calcium channels to communicate with the body's other cells.

Other Brain Effects

In the presence of alcohol, the brain receives far less oxygen. Excessive alcohol also has a destructive effect on the body's central nervous system. These effects, combined with the impaired calcium channels, disrupt the body's hippocampus (in the brain's medial temporal lobe) activity. Alcohol disrupts spatial reference memory tasks and lowers the levels of glutamate released in the synapses of the hippocampus in the brain.

Dementia

According to research conducted at John Hopkins University, excessive alcohol consumption also seems to increase the risk of dementia for individuals later in life (memory loss is a large part of the dementia disorder). People who drank over 14 alcoholic drinks weekly were found to have a higher risk of dementia.

Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome

Alcohol dementia is called Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome. In this disorder, people have lower thiamine levels as a result of frequent alcohol consumption (daily alcohol intake such as that of alcoholics). Vitamin B1 supplements, however, can help reverse this deficiency. This disease leads to impaired memory, learning abilities and problem-solving skills. One identifying symptom of this disease is that individuals make up vivid and highly detailed accounts of experiences that never actually happened.

Warning

Excessive alcohol drinking can have a lot of negative impacts, including permanent brain damage. Adolescents and young adults can cause more permanent damage to their brains than older drinkers, according to research conducted at Duke University. Heavy drinkers who are young become far more vulnerable to the dangerous neurotoxic effects that come as a result of consuming large quantities of alcohol. So not only can excessive alcohol cause memory loss, it can also damage learning abilities in the brain as well. Similar results were also found in studies conducted by Dr. Thomas Heffernan, a Northumbria University psychologist.

How Do Doctors Remove Staples

Preparing the Area Around the Wound

The doctor first cleans the area around the wound or incision along the line of the staples with betadine or chloroprep. Although the wound is closed and healing, removing the staples, particularly if one or more has become embedded, creates a very small, new, open wound, representing a possible site for an infection.

Inspecting the Wound Site

The doctor then determines whether the staples look dry and that there's no suppuration around them. If steri-strips have been used in conjunction with the staples, the steri-strips may be left in place as the staples are removed to determine if the healing process at a specific location is far enough along to remove the staples.

Removing the Staples

Finally, the doctor takes the staple remover from the single-use staple remover kit, puts it in the center of the staple and pushes the sides of the staple remover together, just like using an office-type staple remover. This causes the edges of the staple to bend up and pull out.

Alpha Lipoic Acid Benefits

Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant produced by the human body. Antioxidants operate by fighting free radicals, waste products that are made when the body transforms food into energy. Free radicals cause cell damaging chemical reactions to the body, which makes it more difficult for the body to fight off infection and leaves the body more prone to liver damage and diabetes. Alpha lipoic acid is capable of preventing cell damage, eliminating hazardous substances from the body and assisting with growth.

Identification

Alpha lipoic acid is essential to the body. It is needed in order to produce energy and plays a massive roll in the energy producing structures of cells. When there is extra alpha lipoic acid in the body, it works an antioxidant (the body already produces enough of it for its basic function). Consuming supplements or getting alpha lipoic injections are both ways to get an excess of this acid into the body.

Age Related Diseases

Alpha lipoic acid is believed to prevent and treat many diseases and disorders related to the aging process, such as heart disease, diabetes, strokes, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, decreases in muscle strength, brain function, energy and immune deficiencies.

Liver Disease

Alpha lipoic acid is helpful in chronic hepatitis treatment, as it helps eliminate toxins from the body and also relieves stress on the liver. Alpha lipoic acid is often used in conjunction with selenium and silymarin (milk thistle) to help treat hepatitis C, which is a very serious form of hepatitis. Along with silymarin, alpha lipoic acid has also been used for treatment of Amanita poisoning, (the result a very dangerous mushroom).

Diseases Being Researched

Several diseases are currently being researched to understand the actual benefits that alpha lipoic acid could have on them. These conditions are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), heart failure, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and cataracts. Alpha lipoic acid may be helpful to treatment of these conditions.

Foods High in Alpha Lipoic Acid

Some foods that are good sources of alpha lipoic acid include broccoli, beef, spinach, yeast, and various organic meats, like heart and kidney.

Know If You Are Getting Premature Menopause

All women will enter menopause at one point in their life. Some of these women have surgically-induced menopause after a hysterectomy and others will begin to show signs of menopause in their late 40s or early 50s. There is also another group of women who may show signs of menopause as early as their 20s. This group of women will be diagnosed with premature menopause. The main difference in symptoms between menopause and premature menopause is the age of onset. If you notice any of the following symptoms occurring in your 20s, 30s or even early 40s, you may be suffering from early menopause and should make an appointment with your gynecologist to discuss your options.

Instructions

1. Start tracking your menstrual cycles if you suspect that you may be entering menopause prematurely. One of the first symptoms of premature menopause is a change in your cycle. Changes may come in the form of frequency, length of your cycle and missing a period. By keeping track of your menstrual cycle on a calendar or in a notebook, you will be better able to see any patterns that may emerge.

2. Determine if you are experiencing hot flashes or night sweats. Women that are not in menopause may experience these on occasion however menopausal women will have hot flashes and/or night sweats much more frequently and at a more uncomfortable level.

3. Track your weight; menopausal women usually experience a weight gain with a disproportionate amount of weight gain occurring in the mid-section. If you are gaining weight and can’t track it to another cause, this may be a sign of premature menopause.

4. Create a sleep log. As women enter menopause, their sleep cycles are often affected and insomnia is not uncommon. Naturally, hot flashes or night sweats can create insomnia but hormone levels are also known to play a part in both a person’s quantity of sleep as well as her quality of sleep.

5. Keep an emotions log. Since menopause can wreak havoc on a woman’s hormone levels, her emotions can also be impacted at significant levels. Some emotions to keep an eye on are: irritability/agitation, mood swings, anxiety, problems with memory, fatigue and even confusion.

6. Contact your doctor if you notice that these symptoms are becoming consistent and you are in your early 40s or younger. These may be signs that you are getting premature menopause.

How Does Ibuprofen Work

Ibuprofen is a drug that belongs to the class of drugs known as NSAIDS, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The use of ibuprofen and others drugs in this class is to help the human body reduce a fever, decrease pain and decrease inflammation of muscles.

Scientifically, the way that ibuprofen works is that it inhibits an enzyme known as COX-2. By inhibiting this enzyme, which is the enzyme responsible for feeling pain, the human body does not feel the pain and the muscles do not swell as they would had ibuprofen not been ingested. You can experience pain in virtually any location of your body; therefore wherever the pain is, the enzyme will also be, so you can take ibuprofen and it will find and numb the pain. Basically, the COX-2 enzyme is blocked when ibuprofen is ingested.

Ibuprofen is also known as Advil, Motrin, Rufen and Nuprin. Some common aliments individuals take ibuprofen for include arthritis, menstrual cramping, headaches and fevers. Ibuprofen is a drug that does not require a prescription, so you may obtain it at just about any store.

Ideas For Grave Sites

Some people worry about where their bodies will be buried.

Making a decision about where you want to be buried can be influenced by superstition, convenience of loved ones, cost and environmental concerns. People who believe that some part of them remains in the body after death are concerned with having their bodies buried in places where they won't be disturbed.

Cemeteries

The most common choice for a burial site is within the boundaries of a recognized cemetery. Some people have their bodies buried in coffins in cemeteries, while others are cremated and have only their ashes interred. Many people choose a cemetery spot themselves long before they are facing imminent death, and take comfort in knowing where their bodies will be going.

Private Land

Regulations about burying a body on private land differ throughout states. If you are thinking of having your body buried on your own land, research the legalities of doing this in your area before you die. If you don't, you could leave your descendants with legal hassles regarding your burial site.

Energy Spots

Some people believe that certain locations have stronger energy than other locations and are more auspicious for burying a body. These ideas are related to traditions involving such things as ley lines, dowsing and feng shui. Sites can be analyzed by experts who are sensitive to these energies, and they can advise the person looking for a grave site on the suitability of different locations.

Wild Land

A minority of people don't want to be interred in a cemetery and either don't own land to be buried on or don't want to be buried on it. Some of these people choose to have their bodies buried in the wilderness, far from any human interference with their process of decomposition and return to the soil.

Live A Healthy Life Without Dieting

It is possible to live a healthy life. Eating healthy foods in moderation while working out on a daily basis is a simple blueprint for a healthy lifestyle. To some, it sounds a bit like hell in a bottle! It doesn't have to be that way. It can be possible to live a healthy lifestyle even without consciously dieting! Here is do just that.

Instructions

1. Eat when you are hungry, and stop when you are full. This is the most simplistic but true statement that can be made about how you eat. It is not something that should be put in a book and sold for twenty bucks. It's just the way it is.

2. Plan your meals in advance for all weekdays. Weekends or days off should not be forced to adhere to a routine. We all need a break in every way a couple of days a week.

3. Make a list of the things you enjoy doing. Walking, hiking or skating just may be on the list. Make a separate list of things that you have always wanted to do. Now put a check mark next to everything on both lists that includes physical activity of some kind. Chances are, lots of things on the list are things that require exercise.

4. Implement a plan where you do the physical activities on your hobby list three times a week. Once a week, on your day off, plan to do something from the list of things you always wanted to do. Once a week, you will now be doing something you always wanted to do.

5. Take an evening stroll after dinner with a friend or partner. It is a relaxing way to burn some extra bread calories after dinner, and it is painless. It is even fun, and it can be a great way to get to know your friend that much better. Instead of spending money on a huge caloric meal in a restaurant in order to enjoy one another's car, you can enjoy the company while strolling and burning calories. Fun without worrying about dieting to restrict calories!

Symptoms Of Rls

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a disorder of the central nervous system that will keep you from falling asleep, among other uncomfortable side effects.

Areas Affected by RLS

Restless Leg Syndrome typically affects the calves, but many people have experienced the feelings in their thighs, arms, and even hands and feet.

Irritation

Often described as an urge to move the affected area(s), irritation sensations of RLS can be painful and uncomfortable. The pain is penetratingly deep, and WebMD describes the irritation as either aching, creeping, crawling, or prickling.

Urges

Many people who experience RLS say that they feel as if getting out of bed and moving around will relieve pain and discomfort. Many lose sleep because of the irritation and urges of RLS, possibly resulting in insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and the inability to socially engage.

Increased Discomfort

Throughout the day, the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome tend to intensify.

Pregnancy

Those who are pregnant may experience restless leg syndrome, which usually intensifies particularly after the fifth month. Unless the condition was present before the pregnancy, symptoms of RLS usually clear up relatively soon after giving birth.

Use The Voodoo Vaporizer

Avoid the harmful side effects of smoke by using the VooDoo vaporizer.

Vaporizers are popular devices for releasing chemicals in herbs without combustion. With most herbs and plants that are ingested, such as tobacco, combustion is used to release the inherent chemicals found within the plant or herb. However, heating these same substances to high temperatures without combustion can release the same desired chemicals without the added dangers and toxins related to inhaling smoke. The VooDoo vaporizer is a battery-powered device that uses controlled heat to create chemically-infused vapor from herbs.

Instructions

1. Grind your herbs using an herb grinder. The VooDoo vaporizer works with high temperatures to release the chemicals stored in the herbs. Grinding increases the surface area of the herb and allows the vaporizer to work more efficiently.

2. Place your ground herbs on the herb disc of your VooDoo vaporizer. Do not overfill the disc. Overfilling reduces the efficiency of your herb.

3. Insert the herb disc into your VooDoo vaporizer.

4. Use the controls on the handle to set the time and the heat level. In general, a higher temperatures means more chemical release. However, higher temperatures make for a hotter vapor which is more difficult to inhale. Find the temperature that is the right balance of effect and ease of inhalation.

5. Wait for the VooDoo vaporizer to heat up and fill the chamber with vapor, then inhale the vapor.

What Are The Benefits Of Sambucol

Sambucol is a drug made from the elderberry shrub (Sambucus nigra) that is an effective natural remedy for the flu. It may also be useful in treating a wide range of other illnesses, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Benefit

Sambucol works by increasing your body's production of cytokines, which are chemicals that play an important role in your body's response to disease. Thus, Sambucol makes your body better able to respond to diseases.

Flu

Sambucol is most effective against the flu. In a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 1995, taking Samubcol was shown to reduce the time that people suffered from the flu by half.

Colds

The elderberry shrub has traditionally been used to treat colds as well as the flu. While Sambucol has not been tested with colds, it may reduce the length of symptoms.

AIDS

Because Sambucol boosts the immune system and it's antiviral properties, it may be effective in treating AIDS.

Cancer

Sambucol may also be useful in treating cancer patients along with chemotherapy or other treatments, but more tests are necessary to say for sure.

Breathe Correctly While Running A Distance

Proper breathing technique can improve a runner's speed and endurance.

Proper breathing is an important key to successful running. Using the correct breathing technique can make a big difference when it comes to a runner's speed and endurance. When a runner does not breathe in the most efficient way possible, he ultimately runs slower and becomes fatigued sooner. Proper breathing technique allow a runner to maintain sufficient oxygen levels in his blood and tissues, allowing him to run faster and for longer periods of time.

Instructions

1. Breathe in and out through your mouth. This allows for maximum air flow, as more air can be taken in through your mouth than through your nostrils.

2. Practice breathing in short, shallow spurts, avoiding long, deep breaths when possible.

3. Breathe from your diaphragm, rather than from your chest. To practice diaphragmatic breathing, lie down and place your hands on the edges of your rib cage. Proper diaphragmatic breathing causes your rib cage to expand outward, while keeping your chest mostly still.

4. Align your breathing pattern with your strides. For example, if you adopt a 3-3 breathing pattern, you take 3 steps on your inhalation and 3 steps on your exhalation. Experiment with different breathing patterns to find the one that feels best for you.

Treat Fever Blisters In Toddlers

Fever blisters, also known as cold sores, are small, painful blisters that mostly appear around the mouth, nose and chin. This contagious skin condition is caused by the herpes simplex virus Type 1. An outbreak can last from 7 to 10 days. There are several treatments to alleviate the symptoms of fever blisters which include home remedies, over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs. The treatment to heal or prevent fever blisters is the same for children and adults, but toddlers have a lower tolerance for pain. In treating fever blisters in toddlers, the main thing is to make the child as physically comfortable as possible.

Instructions

1. Treat the fever. With younger children, a fever may accompany the fever blisters. Apply cold compresses to the child's forehead. Use over-the-counter medications to treat fever in children such as those with acetaminophen. Read the directions on the label. Give the toddler the medicine based on age and weight.

2. Apply ice packs to the cord sores. This is an easy home remedy that can reduce pain and swelling. Move the ice pack around. Use it for only 15 minutes at a time. Another option is to apply a cool, damp washcloth to the sore. This can relieve pain.

3. Apply over-the-counter cold sore ointments. Products that contain numbing agents offer pain relief for the short term. When applied, they initially sting so children don't like these types of ointments. However, they are effective in reducing the pain and discomfort.

4. Apply sunscreen. Exposure to the sun can trigger cold sores outbreaks on the face. Sunblock and sunscreen can reduce the chances of an outbreak. Lip balms with SPF 15 or higher can be used as a preventive measure also. Children like lip balms. These products come in a wide rage of flavors.

5. Use children's pain relievers. Over-the-counter pain relievers made for children are a good idea when the child is in pain. Pain relievers with ibuprofen and acetaminophen are best for children. Aspirin is not recommended. It has been linked to diseases like Reyes Syndrome.

6. Don't use Abreva. This ointment is available over-the-counter, and it is used to reduce the length of a cold sore outbreak. It is effective when applied to each fever blister, but it is not recommended for younger children, especially those under 12 years of age.

7. Ask your pediatrician about prescription drugs for fever blisters. There are several prescription drugs that reduce the healing time of cold sores and reduce the number of outbreaks, but not all of these are approved for children. If your toddler has frequent and painful outbreaks, consult with your doctor for advice.

Quit Smoking Cigarettes

Manufactured to be addictive, cigarettes and other tobacco products are often difficult to eliminate from your life once the addiction is established. But, the physical, social and financial reasons to quit are so many in number that few smokers haven't tried to quit at one point or another. It's possible to quit successfully with a few well-supported steps.

Instructions

1. Create a plan and choose a quit date. If you are taking an antidepressant to help you quit, most doctors recommend that you take the medicine for two weeks before quitting.

2. Tell everyone you know that you are going to quit and on what day. This will give them fair warning if you don't seem yourself right after you quit, and it will encourage you to keep your word.

3. Gather as much support as you can. Try to convince your spouse or partner or a friend to quit with you. Join a support group online or find one in your area.

4. Remove all smoking paraphernalia on your quit day. Throw away any leftover cigarettes, ashtrays and lighters.

5. Keep yourself occupied at all times for the first few days. Go to restaurants where smoking is not allowed, play a sport, work on hobbies. Remember that the cravings will be frequent, but they do not last that long.

6. Celebrate quitting milestones. Promise yourself something new if you can go two days, a week, a month without smoking. Use the money you would have otherwise spent on cigarettes.

7. Focus your attention on quitting smoking, not maintaining your weight. Diet before or after you have quit, but not for the first three months. Allow yourself the few extra pounds. They are healthier than the cigarettes.

What Are The Signs Of Anorexia

What Are the Signs of Anorexia?

Anorexia is a dangerous disease that takes the lives of young women each year. As a friend or family member begins to show signs, it is imperative to look closely at her lifestyle. Even though this disease can happen to males, it is much more common in females. This is especially true with young impressionable girls. You must first understand the warning signs of anorexia before you can help.

Significance

Anorexia is the dread of becoming fat. This mental condition is so serious that while looking in a mirror, the person actually sees an overweight person staring back. Look for signs of the anorexic person spending a lot of time with the mirror and the weight scale. According to Helpguide.org, typically anorexia affects young women between 13 and 21 years of age. However, this disease can affect all people at any age, male or female. Death is all too often the outcome for people who to not obtain medical assistance.

The Facts

In America, typically role models for young girls are impossible-to-imitate model types. Even though various celebrities are beginning to speak out against eating disorders, young women try to live up to impracticable goals. According to Women and Peace, people suffering with anorexia often lie with extreme accuracy. In addition, the person usually joins large meals or cooks; however, she eats hardly anything. Usually, she only consumes a bite or two during the meal.

Types

According to Helpguide.org, two types of anorexia exist. The more common type, restricting, refers to reducing food intake dramatically and exercising excessively. The less common type is purging. The condition may cause the person to vomit after consuming any amount of food to remove the calorie intake. Wearing overly baggy clothes and hiding her appearance are signs of the restricting type. Eating a large number of breath mints and overly brushing her teeth are signs of purging. Often purging is mistaken for bulimia, another eating disorder. Even though some general similarities exist, the two diseases are distinct.

Identification

According to the Mayo Clinic, changes in physical appearance or other warning signs emerge with anorexia. If your child or friend is experiencing dizziness, fainting spells or dehydration, it is important to seek medical assistance. Other signs may be coldness even in mild temperatures, an increase in hair on the body, or nails breaking randomly. In addition, hair falling out and an increase in flaky or dry skin may be a cause for alarm.

Eating Habits

According to the Mayo Clinic, definite warning signs are apparent. Notice eating habits such as portion size and low-calorie meals. The person may eat only a few bites. In addition, watch closely as the person eats. Picking at the food and spitting into a napkin are strong warning signs of anorexia.

Complaints and Denial

According to Helpguide.org, complaining about weight even though she is thin is a major sign of anorexia. Additionally, when a confrontation emerges, she may become angry and deny she has an eating disorder. It is vital to seek medical attention if the warning signs are present. Long-term damage may occur if the person does not receive the proper medical assistance.

Use Twisting Poses In Yoga To Improve Digestion

Digestion begins with chewing food thoroughly and taking time to eat. This sounds old-fashioned, and it is: yoga and ayurveda date back 2,000 and 5,000 years, respectively. As sister sciences, they can help modern-day folk use the classical yoga poses (asanas) to help improve digestion.Ayurveda believes agni fire in the belly helps us to digest food. High noon is when agni the strongest. For that reason, the largest meal is eaten at noon, and lighter meals at breakfast and dinner. Ama, or toxins, are believed to accumulate in the body if food is not digested.Twisting asanas wrings out the internal organs and helps food move from the small intestine to the large intestine. The ilocecal valve is on the right side: to improve digestion, always twist to the right first, then the left.

Instructions

1. Lie flat on your back with your feet flat and hip-width apart on your mat. Make sure your knees are over your ankles. Move both knees to the right, stacking your legs, so that your knees, ankles and feet are stacked. Extend your right arm alongside you out to the side, so that the back of your right shoulder is flat on the mat. Drape your left hand over your legs and turn your head to the right. Hold for five to eight breaths. Repeat to the left side. Rest.

2. Proceed to Jathara Parivartanasana, an active lying twist. Remain lying flat on your back and place your arms out to your sides, so that your palms are anchored on the floor. Extend your legs straight up, flexing your heels and bringing the inner edges of your feet together. Draw in your lower abdominal muscles to stabilize your low back.

3. Lower your legs to the right as you turn your head to look left. Exhale and bring your legs back to the starting position, and draw your legs to the left as you turn your head to the right. Continue for 10 to 12 rounds, maintaining the action of pressing your palms in the floor and keeping the lower abs engaged. Rest.

4. Roll up to sit for a variation of Marichyasana C from First Series, Ashtanga yoga. Sit on your hips and extend your legs straight out in front of you. Root your left heel into the floor as you bend your right knee and place your right foot on the mat. Your right knee should be over the ankle.

5. Bring your right hand behind you, placing your palm to the floor (on the fingertips if you cannot flatten the hand). Extend your left arm and, bending at the elbow, cross it over your right knee. Elongate the spine from the sitting bones through the crown of the head, and move your chest to the right. Resist the twist with your left arm. Keep your chest well-lifted and the center of your low back moving forward. Remain for five to eight breaths. Repeat for the left side. Rest.

Why Does Breathing Rate Increase With Exercise

Why Does Breathing Rate Increase with Exercise?

Breathing is a necessary human function, but the breathing rate generally increases when a patient is physically activity. Understanding why this happens---and help your body during exercise---is essential in receiving a healthy workout and a healthy body.

Features

When you exercise, much of the body's blood rushes to the muscles to help fuel the physical activity. This surging of blood often results in a need for more oxygen in the blood than is present, and thus the body's breathing rate increases. Breathing in through the nose may be harder for patients when they are exercising, so if necessary, patients should breathe through the mouth, as this ensures a greater oxygen flow.

Function

Breathing is essential because it draws in oxygen and helps to dispel carbon dioxide. When a person is exercising, her body needs additional oxygen, and thus the breathing rate increases. Acknowledging your body's needs, and breathing appropriately to accommodate them, is necessary in igniting the burning of fat and having a healthy workout.

Significance

Breathing is necessary during exercise because it ensures that the body is receiving the necessary amount of oxygen to power the muscles and brain. If a patient does not get enough air while exercising, he may develop side stitches because the body is robbed of the necessary amount of oxygen it needs. Generally, the more strenuous the activity, the more oxygen is needed to move the patient's muscles efficiently. Patients are advised to breathe with a regular rhythm and constant pace.

Breathing During Exercise

Because humans breathe more when they are exercising, it is important to recognize the most efficient and comfortable ways to breathe. Most physical fitness experts advise patients to breathe out during the effort phase of exercise. For example, if a patient is doing an abdominal crunch, the patient should breathe out as she lifts the trunk. But most essential when exercising is simply to breathe, no matter what the pattern.

Possibility of Too Much Breathing?

If a patient breathes too much, he may hyperventilate, but generally, this does not occur during exercise. When walking or running, patients are advised to breathe out on every fourth step, to maintain a safe and health pattern. In more strenuous activities, including running, jogging and weight-lifting, patients may need to breathe more frequently to ensure the proper amount of oxygen and blood circulation.

Use A Mortar And Pestle

What is a mortar and pestle? It's not just something witches use in Halloween stories, a mortar and pestle set is actually the original food processor. The set consists of a small dish and a smooth, wide piece that you use to mash all different kinds of foods. From spices to fruits and vegetables, you can bypass the electrical method and use a mortar and pestle to get your food into a paste or powder.

Instructions

1. Select a small amount of whatever you're crushing. Putting in too much will make it harder to get an even grind.

2. Put your whole foods, cubes or pieces into the bowl.

3. Press down on the collected mass with the pestle or "pounder" piece, holding the piece firmly.

4. Use a circular motion, slowly elongating and contracting, to being to grind the food at the bottom of the bowl.

5. Continue to press down and grind, letting the food shift, so that little by little, all of the pieces in the bowl will be ground down pretty fine.

6. Put the crushed food in another bowl and wipe out the mortar bowl to prevent whatever you were processing from leaving its taste in the bowl.

Health Benefits Of Melatonin For Sleep

Melatonin is a hormone that is found in many animals, including humans. Melatonin levels rise and fall during the day and help regulate many functions within the human body. Melatonin acts by binding to and activating special melatonin receptors throughout the body. Melatonin supplements are available in the United States, though over-the-counter sale of this compound is illegal in some countries.

Melatonin Production

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, which is a part of the brain outside of the blood-brain barrier.

Effects of Melatonin

Melatonin works to regulate the circadian rhythm by causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature.

Importance of the Circadian Rhythm

If the circadian rhythm gets disrupted, it may lead to bipolar disorder or other psychological disorders, including some sleep disorders.

Other Health Implications

Disruption of the circadian rhythm due to lowered levels of melatonin can also affect the immune system. There is also evidence that depressed melatonin levels can result in an increased risk of cancer.

Function of Melatonin Supplements

Taking melatonin supplements may help in keeping melatonin levels at a high enough level for normal circadian rhythm function.

Make Your Body Grow Tall

For the most part, it is men who find being short a challenge, but there are also women who would rather be taller than they are. The good news is that it is possible to grow tall without the side effects of growth hormones, which can include increased bone density, wrinkled skin, weight gain and acne. Helping your body to grow naturally is healthier and safer. It is important to understand that the following steps will not actually make you grow taller than your genetics give you the predisposition to be.

Instructions

1. Pay attention to your posture. Slumping over makes you appear shorter. Stand up and sit straight with your shoulders back. You will actually be standing as much as an inch taller.

2. Eat a diet rich in calcium, proteins, vitamins, minerals and protein. Consume milk and meat products, as well as fruits and vegetables to ensure you get these in your diet. Calcium is especially important because it helps with the development of your bones, which is integral to growing to your full height.

3. Get plenty of sleep every night. It is true that the body already has natural growth hormones. According to Homeopath Melanie Grimes, while you are sleeping the amino acid glutamine stimulates these growth hormones, thus stimulating your body to grow.

4. Exercise regularly. The combination of a good diet, plenty of sleep and exercise best helps your body to produce enough growth hormone to help it grow.

5. Laugh often. As strange as this sounds, according to Bernie Siegel, M.D., laughter is one of the best ways to stimulate your body to create more human growth hormone.

Psyllium & Bentonite Cleanse

The colon function in the body is to help remove the unwanted toxins from our systems. Although many experts say that the human body does a sufficient job of removing these toxins itself, still others have found that cleansing the bowels can significantly improve their health and wellness. While there are many products out there to help you cleanse your system, the use of bentonite clay and psyllium fiber have been found to be very safe and effective cleansing methods.

Using Bentonite To Cleanse

Taking bentonite supplements is a safe and popular ways to assist in a healthy colon cleanse. Bentonite is a highly mineralized clay taken from volcanic ash that forms into a gel when mixed with water. While in the colon it binds toxic substances to it, which it can then transport out of the bowels. After cleansing the bowels and removing the unwanted toxins, it leaves behind colon walls more prepared to absorb vitamins and minerals to create a healthier body. Bentonite clay is usually sold as a thick, light-grey gel that is tasteless, but can also come in a powder or capsule form.

Taking Bentonite Safely

There are many different manufacturers of bentonite supplements so it is best to follow the manufacturer's instruction for safe and proper usage. According to one report, it is optimal to take the clay when your stomach is empty. It can also be taken at least one hour before or after a meal or right before going to sleep at night.

It is recommended to begin by taking 1 tbsp each day by mixing it with a small glass of juice. Continue this dosage for one week, then slowly increase the dosage amount. It is not recommended to ingest more than 4 tbsps per day, taken in divided doses. Be sure to drink at least eight glasses of water each day while doing this to prevent constipation

Using Psyllium To Cleanse

There are many manufacturers that produce products containing psyllium fiber to help cleanse the colon and promote regularity in bowel movements. When mixed with water, psyllium forms a gel that has a sponge-like effect on the colon walls, removing any toxins that are impeding the absorption of vital nutrients and poorly effecting your health. Follow the dosage instructions provided by the manufacturer for a safe and effective cleanse of your body. It is recommended that you drink one to two glasses of water with each dose of supplements containing psyllium.

Fluid Intake

Drinking plenty of water and juice is effective in more ways than one when performing a detox. Water is helps remove unwanted toxins that were flushed through the bowels during a prior fasting process. Liquids are also important in preventing dehydration during a detox. Also, many juices contain sugars that assist in speeding up your bowel movements. Juices can also be a good natural source of vitamins and minerals that your body needs to stay healthy and energized during the cleansing process.

Raw Fruits and Vegetables

Since it is processed and cooked foods that tend to create or add to the toxins in the colon, a detox accompanied by mostly raw fruit and vegetables is your best bet for clearing out your system. Raw fruit and vegetables are very high in fiber, which assists the supplements in removing unwanted toxins from your digestive tract. Also, they contain the vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes that are necessary for a healthy body so you won't feel weak during the cleanse.
