Low Carbohydrate Foods

Low carbohydrate diets became popular in the 1970s, and regained popularity again in the 1990s for weight-loss benefits, lowering blood pressure and reducing diabetes symptoms. There is research that aims to both prove and disprove the safety and efficacy of low-carbohydrate diets, but neither side has presented a definitive answer. Work with your doctor to determine if a low-carb lifestyle is right for you.


Meats and Protiens


The most common low-carbohydrate foods are proteins. These include animal proteins like beef, chicken, pork and fish. When prepared without additives, these foods have virtually no carbohydrates. They are the mainstay of most low-carb diets.


Processed meats and meats with additives, like deli meat, hot dogs and breakfast sausages, often contain added sugars, which increase the carb count. When eating these foods, always read the labels carefully to determine how additives affect carbohydrates.


Some vegetarian proteins are also low in carbohydrates. A servicing of tofu, for example, has about two carbs per serving. Many vegetarian meat substitutes that are made from soy are low carb as well. Vegetarian proteins made from corn, rice or other grains may be moderate to high in carbohydrates. Always read food labels carefully.


Fruits and Vegetables


Vegetables are pretty much fair game, with a few exceptions, when it comes to low-carb foods. Green, leafy vegetables like lettuce, spinach, kale and collards are some of the lowest carb and most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. As a general rule, the darker the green, the more nutrients it contains. A half a cup of cooked kale has around 2.4 carbs, according to the Atkins Carbohydrate Counter (see Resources).


Other low-carbohydrate foods include broccoli, at 1.6 carbs per 1/2 cup; cabbage, at 1.6 carbs per 1/2 cup; and mushrooms, at 1.2 carbs per 1/2 cup. Onion and garlic are moderately high-carb compared to other vegetables, but the quantities used are usually much smaller--closer to 1 tbsp. than 1/2 cup serving, so these foods are generally considered okay for low-carb dieters.


Root and other starchy vegetables like corn, potatoes and peas are high in carbohydrates. Low-carb diets generally eliminate these foods initially, then add them back slowly in limited quantities.


Most fruits rank high on the carb scale. For example, one small pear has around 20 carbs, which is higher than many low-carb plans allow in an entire day. Low-carb fruits include berries, like raspberries and blueberries. A 1/4 cup serving of blueberries has around 4 carbs. Many low-carb diets also allow melon. For a 1/4 cup serving of melon, you get around 3 carbs.








Dairy


Shop carefully for dairy when buying low-carb foods. Most cheeses have around 1 to 2 carbs per oz., like cheddar, mozzarella and colby. These high protein foods make good low-carb snacks.








Milk is not considered a low carbohydrate food due to the high amount of natural milk sugar, or lactose, it contains. An 8 oz. glass of milk has nearly 12 carbs. Low-carb substitutes, used in moderation, include heavy cream, soy milk or half-and-half. Avoid added sugars in flavored soy milk.


Dairy with additives, like yogurt, flavored cheeses and dips usually have added sugars, which dramatically raise carb counts. Look for foods with as few additives as possible and read the labels. The difference between one yogurt and another can be as much as 50 carbs.


What to Avoid


Foods notoriously high in carbohydrates include white pasta, white flour, white bread, potatoes and sugar. Sugar is found in nearly all processed foods, and is listed by several names, like high fructose corn syrup or brown rice syrup. White flour is in bread, cakes, cookies, sauces and gravies. Many healthy, whole foods also contain a lot of carbohydrates, including beans and whole grains.

North Carolina'S Medicaid Rules For Gastric Bypass







North Carolina cares for its clinically obese residents.


The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) oversees the state's Medicaid program and what medical services it pays for. As of a July 2008 revision, the NCDHHS clinical coverage policy outlines what medical record reviewers look for to approve applications for Medicaid-covered gastric bypass surgery. Among the criteria for approval are sever obesity and previous failed attempts to lose weight.


Age Requirement


Qualifying Medicaid recipients must be at least 18 years old. However, those under age 18 may be considered for the surgery on a case-by-case basis.


Qualifying Body Mass Index


Successful Medicaid applicants for gastric bypass coverage must have medical record documentation showing two years of consistent body mass index scores of 40 or higher.


Body Mass Index Scores under 40 and other Qualifying Factors


Medicaid applicants with body mass index scores betweeen 35 and 40 for two years may have gastric bypass surgery paid for by the state if there is medical record documentation of any of the following conditions being complicated or caused by clinically severe obesity: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, disabling physical trauma, respiratory insufficiency or significant circulatory insufficiency.


Alternative Weight Loss Methods - Proof of Necessity


Qualifying applicants must also present medical record documentation of failed attempts to lose weight without surgery, including either a minimum of six months enrollment in physician-supervised nutrition and exercise programs or three months participation in a multidisciplinary surgical preparatory regimen. Failed weight loss efforts may indicate an endocrine disorder.


Psychological Evaluation


Medicaid applicants must present a psychological assessment proving mental suitability for gastric bypass surgery and the ability to comply with post-surgical dietary changes and medical appointments.

Dense and Heavy

What Is Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer originates in one or both ovaries. There are three main tumors that can originate within the ovaries: germ cell tumors, stromal tumors and ephitelial tumors. Germ cell tumors originate in the ovary cells, which are responsible for producing eggs. Stromal tumors originate in the hormone-producing cells that provide structure and support for the ovary. Epithelial tumors originate in the ovaries' outer surfaces. The vast majority of ovarian cancers are caused by epithelial tumors.


Staging


Ovarian cancer is staged using the standard system to stage almost all cancers. This system assigns a stage from I to IV, with I being the least serious and IV being the most serious. It is called the AJCC system because it was created by the American Joint Committee on Cancer. It also sometimes referred to as the TNM system, based on the three factors used to assign a stage to a cancer. The "T" factor describes the size of the tumor. The "N" factor describes the extent or absence of cancer in the lymph nodes. The "M" factor describes the presence or absence of metastases (spread of the cancer to other body parts).








Stage IIIA








Ovarian cancer has three different classifications for Stage III cancer. Stage IIIA is the least severe of the Stage III cancers. It is characterized by a T number of 3a, an N number of 0 and an M number of 0. The 0 in N and M means there are no metastases or cancer in the lymph nodes. The T number of 3a means that there is visible cancer present in the ovaries and microscopic cancer cells in the lining of the upper abdomen, but no visible cancer in the abdomen.


Stage IIIB


Stage IIIB is the next classification for Stage III ovarian cancer, and is harder to treat than Stage IIIA. Again, the N and M number are 0, which means there is no cancer in the lymph nodes or in distant parts of the body. However, the T number of 3b means there is cancer present in both ovaries and visible cancer in the abdomen that is smaller than 2 centimeters.


Stage IIIC


Stage IIIC is the final Stage III classification. The next level of ovarian cancer is Stage IV, which is no longer curable. Stage IIIC is characterized by an N number of 1. This means that cancer is present in the lymph nodes. The T number doesn't matter because it is the cancer's presence in the lymph nodes that make the cancer Stage IIIC. The M number is 0. Stage IIIC also describes cancer with a T number of 3c, and an N and M number of 0. This means visible cancer larger than 2 centimeters long is present in the abdomen, but there is no lymph node involvement.


Prognosis


Prognosis for cancer is determined based on evaluating the five-year survival rates of patients diagnosed with a given stage of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with Stage IIIA ovarian cancer is 50.8 percent. The five-year survival rate for patients with Stage IIIB drops to 42.4 percent. Finally, the five-year survival rate for patients with Stage IIIC ovarian cancer is 31.5 percent.

7. Get professional help. If you aren't able to clear away emotional pain on your own, don't be afraid to ask for help. You are not a failure or a weakling.

Plant Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha has been grown for centuries in India and grows quite well in many parts of the U.S., especially in the warmer southern states. The root is dried, ground up and eaten for its medicinal qualities, and is a popular treatment for male impotency. The leaves are sometimes dried and smoked for a relaxing feeling. Ashwagandha seeds are easily grown and will tolerate a wide variety of soil conditions and climate, although warm, dry climates are best.


Instructions


1. Gently press ashwagandha seeds into a Jiffy pot or into a small pot filled with mulch. Brush soil over the seeds you have planted (no more than three seeds per pot spaced at least 1/4 inch apart) but do not compact the soil.








2. Spray the soil with water until it is thoroughly damp but not drenched.


3. Place the pots in a sunny location where they will get approximately half an hour of direct sunlight each day. Keep pots in an area where the temperature remains a relatively constant 70 to 72 degrees F.


4. Thin plants from pots one week after germination, which should take about 14 days. Thin by pulling out the smaller plants and allowing the largest and strongest plant to remain.


5. Plant your ashwagandha outside once all possibility of frost has passed. Plant in a sunny area. Dig a hole just slightly larger than your Jiffy pot and then place the entire pot into the hole. Pack soil around it.


6. Sprinkle the area with water until the soil is thoroughly damp but not drenched. Water the plants every few days so the soil is thoroughly wet. Let it dry out somewhat between waterings.

Washing your pump right after each use in hot water with soap is the best way to ensure cleanliness. Use a brush to clean the milk bottle and use a clean towel to keep the equipment dry and clean.


2. Make yourself comfortable. Sit on the chair and use a foot stool to keep your feet up. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking enough water, juice or milk.


3. Expressing breast milk by hand is a good way to relieve engorgement. Put a clean cup under the breast. Place one hand on the breast with your thumb and index finger around the edge of the areola. 2. Add corn oil to the solution of osmium tetroxide.


3. Wait 3 to 5 minutes until the solution becomes black.


4. Dip a piece of the filter paper for 2 to 3 seconds into fresh corn oil. Place the filter paper over the osmium tetroxide solution.


5. If the filter paper begins to turn black, add an additional portion of corn oil (approximately half of the initial volume calculated in Step 1) to the osmium tetroxide solution. Wait 3 to 5 minutes.

Salt Remedy

Prevention

1. Identify your fears. Panic attacks are all about Fear. The first step is to identify what is triggering your panic attacks. Identifying the fear is the most important step.








2. Monitor your thoughts during a panic attack. Most people who experience panic attacks have triggers, thoughts that cause their body to go into panic. A panic attack triggers the fight or flight response in a human being causing all sorts of uncomfortable sensations. Rapid Heart beat, light-headedness, changes in vision, etc. These are all perfectly normal, and they have no harmful effects on your health. You cannot, and will not die. You must identify the thoughts. Pay attention to your thought process, most people have a fearful thought, then it triggers a 'sensation' in the body, you then pay attention to that sensation, and more fearful thoughts arise, it is a big cycle, and goes in a circle until you are into a full blown panic attack.


3. Once these thoughts are identified, use cognitive feedback. Face your fears, tell yourself positive things, what is the worst that could happen? One of the major contributers to panic attacks is blowing things out of proportion. Tell yourself that you are in control of your own mind and body, understand the sensations are normal that you are feeling, and don't fear them. If you don't fear them, they will not continue to exist. Stop these thoughts before they trigger these sensations and lead into a panic attack. It takes much practice, but you can prevent Panic Attacks. You must face all your fears until they become mundane, and do not bother you any more. Fear is based upon some illogical thoughts and usually highly unfounded. Of course there are many things to fear, but not the extent that you do. Also, do not try to suppress your scary thoughts, that will not help. Instead, let them come into your mind, don't deny them, then deal with them appropriately. Use reasoning techniques to battle these thoughts and take control back.


4. And last, do not fear panic attacks themselves. They are harmless, no matter how terrible you feel, they will not harm you in any form. You are still in control even when you are having them. Do your best to keep this in your mind, no matter how uncomfortable you feel during one, there is absolutely no harm coming your way. You will be okay, and it will pass. Practice the above techniques until you have regained control of your own mind's peace. It takes practice, but you will overcome them.

A study published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development showed that subjects with weak weight-bearing muscles benefited from wearing harnesses during treadmill gait training. Body weight supports promoted gait symmetry by preventing pelvic movements and shock absorption at the bottom of the foot.


Balancing While Standing


According to the American College of Sports Medicine, several tools can be used to help patients strengthen lower body muscles while standing to develop better balancing ability. Foam-filled balance pillows and inflatable rubber balance discs are placed flat on the ground. Air and foam composition create the instability that forces users to balance themselves while either standing on one or both feet. Another device, the balance board, operates differently from the other two in that instead of laying flat against the floor, the base of it is spherical. Users stand on a flat surface and balance on a board that wobbles.


Balancing While Sitting


Balancing tools for sitting may not make obvious sense but sitting upright is a balancing exercise people generally take for granted. The same tools used for balancing on foot are recommended by the ACSM for maintaining good posture in a seated position. In addition, sitting on air-filled stability balls strengthen back muscles and force the body into an upright position to prevent rolling off the ball. An alternative to a complete ball is a half ball with one air-filled side and one flat side. These can be placed inside chairs and balance is practiced sitting on the air-filled side.

What Is Electrothermal Disc Decompression







Many people with chronic back pain don't know about EDD as a treatment option.








Electrothermal disc decompression (EDD) is the latest breakthrough in nonsurgical technology. This procedure helps to alleviate the daily pain and suffering caused by debilitating conditions such as back pain, sciatica, herniated or bulging disc and degenerative disc disease.


Procedure


EDD uses a spinal needle to guide a decompression heating wire into your disc. Once the position of the catheter is confirmed using an X-ray, the disc is then heated for a short period of time, as specified by your doctor. You will be discharged once the catheter and needle are removed from your spine.


How It Works


The protein wall of the disc is modified using a heating element, causing a reduction in the size of the disc material. Make A Sock Purse

Sock coin purses are adorable, and they can be custom made for anyone. Whether using tiny baby socks as party favors at your upcoming baby shower, children's socks as gifts for little ones, or gym socks for the athlete in your family, there is something in this pattern for everyone.


Instructions








1. Match your thread and ribbon or string to your socks. Make sure the ribbon or string fits your socks. For example, use thin satin ribbon with small baby socks or cotton cording with thick, adult gym socks.


2. Turn one socks inside-out so that the smooth side faces in and then set it aside. Lay the other sock flat on the table. Make a small pencil mark on the center of the back of the sock. The mark should be placed above the curved heal where the sock creases when laid flat.


3. Unfold the sock and make two button holes with your sewing machine. The holes should be large enough to fit your ribbon or string and evenly spaced on either side of the hole. Once your button holes are made, carefully slip the inside-out sock into the button-holed sock, lining up the edges and curves as perfectly as possible.


4. Use your sewing machine to stitch the two socks together at the opening. The hem size will depend, once again, on the size of the ribbon. As a rule of thumb, the stitches should be placed about an inch or so below the bottom of your button holes. Once complete, stitch again as close to the top of the two socks as possible.








5. Place a small safety pin on the end of your ribbon or string and use the pin to help feed the cording through your sock. Place the pin into one button hole and move it around the circular space you have created. Once you have reached the opposite side, feed the pin through the second button hole and tie the strings tight.

Viral Arthritis Symptoms

When someone has developed viral arthritis, he is actually suffering from an irritation and inflammation of the joints due to an infection, like mumps or rubella.
