If your child or a student in your class has a hearing aid, you might be wondering how you should address the issue with other children in the class. Devoting a lesson to explain what a hearing aid is and how it works can be helpful for children in accepting the hearing-impaired child.
Instructions
1. Read students the book "A Button in Her Ear," by Ada Bassett Litchfield. Discuss why the girl in the story gets a hearing aid and how it helps her.
2. Show students a real hearing aid, and explain what the different parts do.
3. Hand out small earplugs (available at a drugstore) to students, and have them put them in their ears. Ask students to complete an activity (e.g., drawing a group picture, playing a short game) with the earplugs in. Afterwards, ask them to describe their experience.
4. Connect the hearing aid to the amplification device and speak near the hearing aid. Note to the students how the hearing aid makes your voice sound louder.
5. If possible, provide students with a bear fitted with a plush hearing aid (available from BuildABear). Allow them to play with the bear and examine the hearing aid.
Plastic surgery can be broken down into two main surgical categories: reconstructive and cosmetic. Reconstructive plastic surgery is used to fix abnormalities and focuses on the functional. Cosmetic plastic surgery is done for the sake of appearance. Patients who have researched the desired surgery, are selective when choosing a doctor, are physically and mentally sound and have reasonable expectations, will fare the best with any plastic surgery option.
Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a common cosmetic surgery used to reshape the nose. This surgery is performed for many reasons, including: reconstruction, correction of birth defects, alleviating breathing problems or simply a cosmetic change. The price tag for a nose job averages around $5,000 and the procedure usually has a recovery time of two to four days.
Otoplasty
The most common reason for otoplasty is to pin back protruding ears. Reconstruction of deformed and damaged ears can also be accomplished. Interestingly, otoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures appropriate for children age four and up. The price ranges between $2,000 and $5,000, and might be covered by insurance.
Abdominoplasty
A tummy tuck is the removal of excess skin and fat, usually from weight loss or pregnancy, from the abdomen. It results in a stronger abdominal wall (trio of muscles that make up the abdomen) and a flatter belly. It leaves a "hip-to-hip" scar and can require nearly a year for complete recovery. The cost falls between $3,000 and $10,000, depending on location, patient needs and the technique used.
Liposuction
Liposuction, often called body contouring, is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. It involves the use of a hollow needle to suction away excess body fat. The price varies, ranging from $1,500 to $7,500. Techniques also, vary and depend on the results desired and patient's needs.
Breast Surgeries
There are three main types of plastic surgery of the breast. Breast augmentation, which uses implants to enlarge or enhance breasts, is the second most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the United States. The cost typically falls between $3,000 and $5,000, and can go higher depending on the type of implant used and its placement.
Nursing, pregnancy and age can cause breasts to lose their shape, resulting in loss of firmness and elasticity. A breast lift, another cosmetic procedure, will counteract this and surgically reshape the breast. This procedure will leave visible scars and usually costs between $4,000 and $6,000, depending on location.
A third surgical option is for women who suffer from large breast. A breast reduction will help alleviate the back and neck pain, bra strap grooves and breathing problems that are often associated with large breast. The cost for a breast reduction averages $7,000, but can vary by location and the scope of the procedure.
Other Surgeries
Face-lifts, brow-lifts and eyelid surgery are other common cosmetic procedures designed to improve and refresh facial appearance. Whole body lifts are common after extreme weight loss that results in an abundance of excess skin. There are other surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures available and a consultation with a licensed plastic surgeon will help in finding those that will yield the desired results.

Pituitary tumors are abnormal growths that sit in your pituitary gland. If you are suffering form pituitary tumors it means that you are probably experiencing headaches, vision loss, nasal drainage, nausea and vomiting, seizures, fatigue and weakness.Pituitary tumors affect your body physically and biochemically. They produce hormones that throw your biochemistry off kilter. Treatment for this particular type of tumor is centered around removing or stopping the growth of the tumor.Since the tumors affect other areas of your body, there are some things that you will need to do to be able to live with them. This article outlines that for you.
Instructions
Educate Yourself
1. Educate yourself about the conditions and what it can do to your body. Consult with a physician. If removal isn't possible, then you will have to live with the effects that the tumors will have on your biochemistry. The best thing to do is to be prepared for whatever comes.
2. Inform family members and friends about the condition and symptoms. They need to know what your body is, or possibly will be, going through.
3. Be prepared for the hormonal changes to your body. If you have a functioning pituitary tumor then there are some hormones that you will need to be aware of. One is the adrenocorticotropic hormone. This hormone aids in the production of cortisol with will cause weight gain around midsection, roundness of the face, high blood pressure, stretch marks, bruising, muscle weakness and thinning of your skin.Another hormone that can be produced is the growth hormone which will cause enlarged hands and feet, excessive sweating, high blood pressure and heart problems. In children, they will have an accelerated growth pattern. The other hormone that is produced is prolactin. Too much prolactin will decrease the normal production of sex hormones. That means that women will have less estrogen, and less testosterone for men. Women will possibly experience irregular menstrual cycles and discharge from the breasts. Men could have enlarged breasts, erectile dysfunction, infertility and a loss in sex drive.
4. Join a support group. Your doctor may know of such a group since they are usually sponsored by the hospital. Talking with people who are dealing with the same thing you are will help when trying to cope with the side effects. This is a good way to receive emotional support and get valuable information.

A deficiency of vitamins can lead to several conditions, including arthritis. Vitamins can also provide relief for arthritis symptoms. Certain vitamins show potential for being particularly beneficial. These include some of the B vitamins, and vitamins C, D, E and K. Taking a daily multivitamin and some added supplements provide a good foundation for relieving arthritis pain and swelling.
Significance
Vitamin K is generating much scientific interest and university studies continue researching its benefits to people with osteoarthritis in particular. This vitamin occurs in cabbage, spinach and other leafy green vegetables. It assists with mineral deposits into the bones, prevents bone degeneration and enables blood to form clots. People do not need mega-doses of vitamin K, but many people are deficient in this vitamin. Arthritis sufferers may want to try taking a supplement in doses of 5 to 15 milligrams daily. Plant-based K-1 and K-2 have no toxicity, and K-3 is synthetic and should be avoided.
Benefits
A B-complex vitamin is a great all-around health boost, and you can find a wide range of choices. The B vitamins are good for reducing swelling, particularly B-5 (pantothenic acid). A B-5 supplement should bring relief within two weeks, and if no results are seen after three weeks, the supplement can be dropped. Vitamin B-3 (niacin) dilates small arteries, which increases blood flow. Vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine) deficiencies are fairly common in older people, as noted by the Connecticut Center for Health. B-6 deficiency causes stiffness and pain in the hands. Vitamin B-12 (cobalamin) helps with nerve protection, myelin production, and cell formation. When combined with vitamin B-1 (thiamin), it can enhance the effectiveness of pain-killing drugs. Effects should be seen within one week and can help people reduce the dosage of pain relievers. People should not take more than 3000 mg of niacin or over 500 mg of pyridoxine a day, to avoid possible toxicity reactions.
Function
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an immune system booster, an antioxidant protecting the body from free radicals, and an anti-inflammatory agent. In the mid-1700s, it was discovered that consuming fruit could prevent and cure scurvy, a disease that causes severe joint problems. Since then, large amounts of vitamin C have been shown to reduce all sorts of inflammation, including joint inflammation like that seen in rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin C also helps form collagen, essential in connective tissue for healthy joints. Nutrition-oriented doctors and natural health care practitioners often prescribe vitamin C for conditions which involve inflammation. A study published in a 2004 issue of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases indicated that eating foods high in vitamin C protects against rheumatoid arthritis. However, a study published in the June 2004 issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism has indicated that vitamin C may actually worsen osteoarthritis of the knee.
Theories/Speculation
The Arthritis Institute of Michigan supports the theory that Vitamin D can cure arthritis along with providing a multitude of other health benefits. People can make sure they are not deficient in Vitamin D simply by spending 10 or 15 minutes in the sunshine twice a week. Certain types of fish also are good sources of Vitamin D, including mackerel, salmon, sardines and tuna. Milk is also a good source of Vitamin D.
Considerations
Vitamin E is also an antioxidant and increases joint flexibility, and some natural health practitioners find that it fights joint inflammation. Studies on this vitamin, however, have produced contradictory findings and it is inconclusive whether it has any benefit for arthritis sufferers. In a study published by the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases in October 2001, researchers found that vitamin E was no better than a placebo at relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee. Additionally, a 10-year study of over 39,000 women published in Arthritis Care and Research in 2008 showed that vitamin E supplementation does not significantly lower the risk of rheumatoid arthritis in women. In contrast, while the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center states that no clinical trials have shown convincing evidence of vitamin E benefits, this vitamin is one of the most commonly-observed deficiencies in people with rheumatoid arthritis. The Center advises that increased use could decrease free-radical damage to joint linings, thus decreasing swelling and pain.

Up to 2 million people each year in the United States experience the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Alcoholism is a significant problem: the rate of American men who qualify as alcoholics at some time in their lives is as high as 20 percent. For women, this number is up to 10 percent. Recognizing the physical signs of alcohol withdrawal is crucial to knowing when treatment is needed.
Types
Sudden withdrawal from alcohol can cause nausea---with or without vomiting---insomnia, tremors and, in extreme cases, seizures and hallucinations.
Effects
Heavy alcohol consumption inhibits brain neuroreceptors. When consumption is stopped, these receptors are then uninhibited, which causes hyperexcitability.
Detoxification
Night sweats are common when going through alcohol withdrawal because the body is ridding itself of built-up toxins.
Sleep
Alcohol withdrawal has marked effects on sleep, manifesting as temporary insomnia or hypersomnia, nightmares and night sickness.
Warning
Pay attention to your body's signals when you quit drinking alcohol. Blood pressure can skyrocket, and the body's electrolyte balance may become severely skewed, requiring medical treatment.
Cancer of the cervix is one of the most devastating cancers that affect women. Because of the proximity of the cervix to the reproductive organs, this cancer has become the most severe and devastating of all cancers. It is usually contracted by women over the age of 40, but it can occur in younger women. As with any cancer, the danger is not only to the infected organ or part of the body, but in the potential to spread, or metastasize. Each year in the United States, approximately 10,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 3,700 die.
Main Cause
One of the main causes of cervical cancer is the human papillomavirus (HPV). Certain types of HPV can cause infections and changes in the cells in the cervix, leading to cancer.
Other types of HPV can be passed from one person to another by sexual contact and are common. Many adults who have been sexually active have at one time in their lives been infected with HPV, which can cause genital warts.
Other Causes
A healthy immune system is the best defense against any infectious entity. While people with healthy immune systems can still get cancer, the women who have weakened immune systems contract the disease more often. Women who have had sexual relations with many men, or who have had relations with one man who has had many partners, will run a higher risk of contracting cervical cancer. Also, women who smoke or who have used birth control pills for a long period of time are at risk.
Checking for Cervical Cancer
The best way to monitor for cancerous growths in the cervix is the Pap smear. The Pap smear tests cells from inside and around the cervix for abnormalities that may indicate serious concerns. Unfortunately, many women do not get a regular Pap smear and any indication of HPV or the start of cancer may go undetected for many months, giving the cancer time to spread.
Symptoms
Most symptoms of cervical cancer will appear in the vagina, since the cervix is connected to it. Symptoms that would indicate the possibility of cervical cancer are:
• Any unusual pain in this area during sexual intercourse.
• Unusual bleeding or unusual changes in the menstrual cycle.
• Vaginal bleeding when anything makes contacts with the cervix during sexual activity or when inserting a diaphragm.
• Any discharge from the vagina that is tainted with blood.
Conclusions
Every woman who has reached sexual maturity, especially women who are over the age of 40, should be aware of these symptoms and be proactive in maintaining a careful watch for any indication of cervical cancer of HPV. Having a regular Pap smear--at least once a year--is the best way for a doctor or gynecologist to find early indications of HPV infection.

Japa meditation may help to clear your mind of daily worry and soothe your spirit. Practitioners the world over use this technique to find peace, calm and tranquility within. Japa meditation uses chanting, or the repetition of a mantra, to focus and still the mind.
Instructions
1. Choose your own mantra, which can be any word or phrase that you like, as long as it is positive. Many people will chant the name of their deity, the name of an object they find soothing, such as a river or a flower, or a phrase from a poem or from a holy book.
2. Say a prayer before you begin your meditation and chanting. The prayer, said with closed eyes, should create a pure and meditative state. Concentrate on either your mind or heart and ask your deity for assistance in your meditation. Then state your mantra once, slowly and clearly. Begin your meditative repetition of your mantra and continue until you finish your meditation.
3. Do Japa meditation in two forms. You may practice meditation in whispers or a low speaking voice, known as Vaikhari Japa. With silent Japa meditation, or Manasika Japa, you repeat the mantras silently in the mind.
4. Practice Japa meditation in a seated, cross-legged position. Most practitioners hold a rosary of 108 beads and chant a mantra for each and every bead.

It is easy and cheap to make your own flax seed pillow. A flax seed pillow filled with lavender scent can make anyone feel pampered whether they lay the pillow on their eyes to relax and block out light or under their bed pillow for aromatherapy. The pillows can be heated in the microwave or chilled in the freezer to help muscle aches as well. A flax seed pillow is an easy to make gift that seems very special.
Instructions
1. Get enough flax seed to fill a pillow of the size you want to make. Some health food stores such as Whole Foods sell flax seeds in their bulk bin section for a low price per pound.
2. Decide if you want to use lavender oil or dried lavender. Dried lavender flowers can be mixed in with the flax seeds, but does not give off as much smell as crushed lavender flowers or oil. You can put dried lavender in a blender to create a powder for a potent aroma, but the powder then must be put in a tea bag so that it does not seep out of the pillow. Lavender oil can be used to coat the seeds.
3. In a bowl, mix your flax seed and lavender. If you are using oil, drop oil in different spots and stir for an even coating. If you are using crushed lavender in tea bags, you will need more than one.
4. Cut a piece of quality fabric twice as wide as you want the pillow. Silk and velvet are luxurious choices. Turn the fabric so that it is wrong side out and fold so that you have a rectangle.
5. With the wrong side facing out, sew the long side and one of the short sides of the pillow so that you have a rectangular pouch.
6. Turn the material right side out so that the pillow almost looks like the finished product, but with one open end.
7. Pour your flax seed and lavender mix into the open end of the pillow until it is 3/4 full. You want to have some empty space so that the seeds can move and form to the body part it is being laid upon.
8. Sew up the open end of the pillow.

Heat packs are used to ease pain caused by muscle strains, pulls or general muscle aches. This heat pack is inexpensive, is quick to make and lasts up to 5 years. These heat packs are great projects for kids to make as gifts for Father's Day or Mother's Day. Warm it up in 30 seconds, and it stays hot for more than 1 hour.
Instructions
1. Wash the sock. Even if the sock is new, wash the sock to relax its fibers. This makes the heat pack more comfortable when it's against your skin.
2. Fill the sock with deer corn. Do not fill the sock all the way up. Leave enough room at the top of the sock to tie a knot. Make sure the deer corn is packed in firmly.
3. Tie a knot in the end of the sock to hold the deer corn in.
4. Paint or decorate the sock to personalize it. Allow time for the sock to dry if you paint it. Another idea is to hot-glue decorations to the sock. Be careful not to add anything that won't survive in the microwave.
5. Microwave the sock for 30 seconds. When removing the sock from the microwave, hold the sock by the knot to keep from burning your hands. The deer corn heats up to create the warmth for the pack.
6. Apply the heat pack to the aching area for relief. Reheat the sock as needed. When not in use, store the heat pack in a cool, dry place.

Type 1 diabetes is often referred to as “Juvenile Diabetes” because it occurs during a child’s early years or adolescence. In Type 1 diabetes, the individual’s body does not produce any insulin. As a result, the individual must watch his or her diet in and take insulin shots in order to keep blood sugar under control. Taking insulin shots and following a strict diet are just a couple of things that a Type 1 diabetic must do in order to keep his or blood sugar under control. Read on to learn control Type 1 diabetes.
Instructions
1. Count your carbohydrates. Since carbohydrates are converted into sugar it is important for an individual with Type 1 diabetes to count the carbohydrates in each meal and base their insulin dosage on that. It is important to count the carbohydrates accurately or you will experience hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).
2. Eat meals and snacks on a schedule. For an individual with Type 1 diabetes, it is important to stick to a schedule. Since the individual must take insulin, he or she must eat on time. Try to stick to a strict meal and snack schedule in order to keep blood sugar under control. Write down what you eat in your food log and then write down your blood sugar in your glucose log.
3. Test your blood sugar. Every doctor will say that one of the most important things a diabetic should do is test his or her blood sugar. Oftentimes, you will feel it if your blood sugar is too high or too low. However, if you don’t have the precise numbers you cannot treat your blood sugar efficiently and it’s possible your blood sugar will go too high or even too low after you treat it.
4. Regularly exercise. Many studies show that diabetics who exercise experience better blood sugar control and oftentimes, the amount of insulin they need is reduced. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. The exercise you choose can range from brisk walking to aerobics.
5. Treat high and low blood sugar immediately. If you feel symptoms of high or low blood sugar, test yourself immediately. Symptoms of high blood sugar include perspiration, fatigue and frequent urination. Symptoms of low blood sugar include shakiness, perspiration and irritability. If your blood sugar is too high, treat it with a quick acting insulin and if it’s too low, drink juice or take glucose tablets immediately. Remember that keeping your blood sugar under control is the key to a healthy life.

Deep manipulation massage is used to restore a healthy balance to a person's body. Firm pressure applied to sore muscles allows physical and mental restoration.
Instructions
1. Apply massage oil onto the muscle groups in need of manipulation. When performing a deep-tissue massage, only those areas of concern are treated.
2. Using quick, vigorous strokes of your fingers, apply firm pressure to the specific muscles.
3. Force bodily imbalances and impurities toward the liver to be used as energy, or toward the kidneys to be expelled. Stress leads to stiff and sore muscles, which cause chemical disturbances. The deep penetration of sore muscles provides relief for tension, pain and even achy feet.
4. Discover the client's level of pain. Deep muscle manipulation causes some discomfort, but the relief is well worth the pain. For maximum results, massage the muscle area past the point of discomfort.
5. Start the massage slowly and gently, working up to maximum pressure. Use the full hand, the heels, and the fingertips depending on what area you are massaging. For the deepest muscle manipulation, use your thumbs.

A person who has thalassemia must stick to a specific diet. Foods that are considered healthy for most people can cause serious complications for thalassemia patients. Thalassemia is a group of genetic blood disorders that can cause life long health problems. That's why it's important to know which food a thalassemia patient can and cannot eat.
Instructions
1. Avoid foods that contain iron. Some thalassemia patients must get regular blood transfusions. This causes an excess build up of iron in the body which can damage the heart and other organs. Proteins that are high in iron and should be avoided include liver, oysters, pork, beans, beef, peanut butter and tofu. Grains that are iron rich include flour tortillas, infant cereal, and cream of wheat. Fruits and vegetables that contain iron and should be avoided include prunes, watermelon, peas, broccoli, raisins, spinach, and leafy green vegetables.
2. Eat plenty of foods that contain calcium. This is extremely important for keeping the bones strong and healthy. This is crucial for people who have thalassemia since frail and brittle bones can be a complication of the disease. Dairy products are a good source of calcium. An added benefit is that dairy products reduce the body's ability to absorb iron.
3. Include vitamin D in your diet. Vitamin D is needed so that the body can absorb calcium. Vitamin D is contained in eggs, dairy products and fish.

Energy healing heals patients with the use of energy. There are many energy healing forms, but their common goal is to channel energy into the patient's energy field to heal and replenish lost energy. This method of healing is effective for many ailments including allergies, chronic fatigue, muscular pain and digestive problems.
Instructions
Try an Energy Healing Treatment
1. Search for an energy healing practitioner. The Quantum Touch Web site offers a list of certified practitioners (see Resources below).
2. Know to arrive at your energy healing session with an open mind and a willingness to receive healing. If you have doubts or are skeptical, it may limit your healing session experience. Expect to pay moderate fees.
3. Relax on the massage table or chair offered to you for the treatment session. You may be given a choice of music and aromatherapy to help you relax.
4. Discuss any expectations you may have and any issues you may want addressed with your healer.
5. Expect the practitioner to know and use a variety of hand positions on your body or the energy field around you depending on the healing form she practices.
Know Whether Energy Healing is Working
6. Keep track of how you feel in a diary before your treatment.
7. Expect to feel different sensations during treatment. As the healer channels energy into your energy field, you may feel the energy as coolness, heat or tingling on your skin. Some patients just feel relaxed.
8. Prepare for a release of emotions. As your energy field is being healed, previously stored toxic emotions are released. Some patients are moved to tears and some have an attack of giggles. The emotional release could take any form.
9. Try to drink lots of water in the days following the treatment because you may feel extremely tired or have a lot of headaches. This means that toxins are being released from your body. This is a sign that the energy healing treatment is working.
10. Expect to feel an improvement either immediately after the treatment or gradually in the days following. The amount of time it will take for you to feel some improvement will depend on the issues with which you are dealing.
11. Review your earlier diary entries and compare the way you feel after treatment to the way you felt before. This will also help you determine whether energy healing is working for you.

Do Simple Physical Therapy Exercises at Home to Strengthen the Knees
It is very common for people to develop various knee problems. Often this is the result of overuse, perhaps pushing too hard at a particular exercise or sport, or perhaps even from walking or running too far or too fast. It could also be the result of simple aging. The knee is the largest joint in the body, and supports all of our weight. In non-medical terms, a lot of different things connect up in there, and it is easy for something to go wrong.
The steps in this article show some basic knee-strengthening exercises that you can do at home on your own. These exercises are best to do proactively, either before you experience any knee pain at all, or while it is at a bare minimum. Certainly don't do any exercises that cause you actual pain while you do them, and certainly see a doctor or physical therapist if you feel that you have any specific thing wrong with your knees other than some pain from typical overuse.
Instructions
1. This first exercise can be done in a chair just as easily and effectively as on the floor as shown. Bend your working knee. Flex your quadricep muscle (on the front of your thigh), and push your knee downward. You won't actually be moving your knee, you're just pushing it down internally while tightening your quad.
You can actually do this at work or while watching TV. Just extend your involved leg so that it has a bend at the knee as shown. Push your knee downward, hold and stay flexed for about 10 seconds, then rest for about 5-10 seconds and repeat about 10 more times. You can really do this exercise as often as you remember and have time. Having strong quad muscles is very important since they help to support your legs and take strain off the knee joint as you exercise. Conversely, many knee problems come as the result of having weak quads.
2. For this next exercise, lie on your back. Prop up the underside of your thigh using a pillow so that your knee as at the 45° angle shown. While keeping your knee in place, lift your lower leg so that it is extended straight, then lower it. Slowly count 1, 2 while lifting, and 3, 4 while lowering. If necessary, place your hand on your knee to keep it steady. Only the lower part of your leg should be moving.
Try to do about 15 repetitions of this exercise, but of course stop if it becomes painful or if you cannot maintain proper form. Rest about a minute, and then see if you can do two more sets. Don't ever push yourself too hard. Remember to switch legs so that your work your body symmetrically, even if only one knee is causing you problems.
3. Stay on your back for this next exercise. It is similar to the one above, but instead of bending and flexing at the knee, you will lift and lower your entire leg, keeping it straight. Bend the non-working knee, and extend the working leg straight out. Lift and lower that leg up to the level of the bent leg as shown. There should be no bend in the knee of the working leg, but don't tense up or "lock" the knee. Do this exercise using the counting and sets described above.
4. For this last exercise you will need an exercise ball or a chair. Lie on your back as shown, and place your knees bent over the ball or chair. Lift your buttocks smoothly off the floor, and then lower them. Count and do reps and sets as described above. You can press down into the mat with your hands if that is helpful, but make sure that it is actually your abs and legs that are doing most of the work. This exercise has a side benefit of strengthening your abdominal muscles which is highly important for any and all physical activity that you are involved in.
5. The diagrams and instructions in the steps of this article are just guidelines. Modify them as you feel is appropriate or as instructed by a doctor, physical therapist, or personal trainer. If you feel any unusual pain in the days after doing these exercises, it probably means that you did too many reps and/or sets. Wait until the pain subsides, and then do fewer sets and reps the next time, remembering to build up gradually.
6. For the exercises that involve working one leg at a time, be sure to do the same number of sets and reps for each side unless instructed otherwise. You don't want to have a situation where you work your "bad" knee to the point that it is actually stronger than the other knee, and then have the opposite imbalance. A common cause of injuries in the first place is not using your body symmetrically.
7. It is ideal if you can do these exercises in conjunction with a supervised personal training program at a gym, but not everyone can afford that or has the time for that. If that is an option, though, it is certainly money and time well spent. A gym offers equipment that can more effectively stretch and strengthen the knees and related muscles and joints, and of course working with a personal trainer ensures that you have the appropriate supervision and guidance.
8. An important part of physical activity is learning manage yourself. Don't get into a pattern of perpetually hurting yourself and then needing to take time off to rehabilitate. Do exercises such as these proactively to avoid common problems, and if you do injure or strain yourself from an activity, take carefully inventory of what you did and what you can do to avoid the same problem in the future. Good luck! O

Prostate cancer is a threat which looms increasingly large for aging men. While everyone dreads the thought of contracting this disease, some small measure of comfort can be taken in the fact that we pour countless amounts of money into combating cancer mortality rates. So while the thought of having cancer might be as frightening as ever, the possibility of surviving a bout with cancer grows by the day. For men diagnosed with prostate cancer, one possible treatment is hormone therapy.
About Prostate Cancer
Put simply, prostate cancer is a condition whereby the cells of the prostate begin growing in an abnormal and malignant fashion. If left unchecked, these abnormal cells will eventually continue growing at an accelerated rate, eventually taking over the entire body. Prostate cancer is categorized into stages (from 1 to 4), depending on how far the cancer has spread. In stages one and two, the cancer is localized to the prostate. In stage three, the cancer has spread to surrounding tissues. In stage four, the cancer has spread throughout the body via the lymph node system. If detected early, prostate cancer has a recovery rate of over 90 percent.
What is hormone therapy?
Hormone therapy is the administration of drugs designed for the purpose of altering the hormone levels in the body. Although not a cure for prostate cancer, hormone therapy can help to slow the spread of the disease. It is a useful alternative treatment for those who are otherwise unable to have surgery, those who have a recurrence of a previous bout of prostate cancer, or for those who want to use it in tandem with other treatments to increase its overall effectiveness.
How does hormone therapy work?
As it has been proven that androgens (male hormones such as testosterone and DHT) within the body facilitate the growth of cancer cells, the primary purpose of hormone therapy is to lower the level of these substances. This can be accomplished in a number of ways, including:(1) orchiectomy, which is a surgical removal of the testicles; (2) injections of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogs, which chemically lowers androgen levels; (3) injections of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone antagonists, which also works through chemical means; and (4) anti-androgens, which is a category encompassing a variety of drugs which block the body's ability to use bioavailable androgens.
What are the common side effects?
Side effects from artificially lowering androgen levels are unpleasant, to say the least. They may include: gynecomastia (the growth of male breast tissue), negative body recompositioning (loss of muscle mass and gain in fat mass), depression, fatigue, lowered red cell counts, loss of bone density, sexual dysfunction, chronic fatigue and hot flashes. These are all serious side effects, and since some of the forms of hormone therapy listed are irreversible, it would be wise to carefully weigh the alternatives before undergoing this course of action.
Further considerations
Of course, when the choice is between prolonged life expectancy at a heavy cost or a lessened life expectancy without sides effects, the decision is exemplified by being torn between scylla and charybdis. In that sense, hormone therapy to combat prostate cancer is quite a mixed bag. A study by Dr. Grace L. Lu-Yao at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey has shown that older men with prostate cancer are better off refusing hormone treatment, as it does not increase survival rates, so that, at the very least, is a cut and dry decision (further information about the study is available is available in the July 9th issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association published in 2008). As for the others fighting prostate cancer and deciding whether to endure the rigors of hormone therapy, the decision is not so simple.
Many herbs have strong antifungal properties, which can help kill candida.
The yeast-like fungus candida resides in various areas of the body and normally does not raise any cause for concern. When it grows unchecked, however, it can result in infections of the vagina, mouth and intestinal tract. Out-of-control candida growth throughout the body has been fingered as a trigger for a wide range of conditions but scientific evidence does not support this notion. If you have a tendency to develop infections related to yeast, many herbal treatments have demonstrated antifungal properties and taking them, along with other measures, might reduce your risk of and treat yeast-related infections.
Herbs Containing Berberine
Herbs containing berberine have a long history of use in Chinese medicine for treating bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Naturopathic physician and author Stephen C. Byrnes, recommends using berberine-containing herbs like goldenseal, barberry and Oregon grape root to kill candida fungus. He notes that these herbs also stimulate the immune system, which will help protect the body against fungal infections. Goldenseal can irritate the liver if taken in excess, and, thus, he recommends discontinuing the supplement for seven days every two weeks.
Thyme
A study in the June 2010 issue of "Planta Medica" looked at the effects of thyme on a variety of isolated bacteria and fungus including candida. It found found the essential oils present in this herb disrupted the plasma cell membrane of this fungus, leading to cell death. Researchers concluded thyme might have value as a medicinal treatment for fungal infections.
Garlic
Garlic has demonstrated antifungal properties reports the University of Maryland Medical Center, which lists it as a suggested herbal treatment for candida infections. You can take it in supplement form or eat one or two cloves daily. If taking supplements, Byrnes recommends enteric-coated capsules, which ensure the garlic will not get released until it reaches the intestines, where much of the candida resides.
Hopseed
The South African plant Dodonaea viscose, also known as hopseed, has demonstrated strong action against candida fungus. A study published in the June 2008 issue of the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology" looked at the effects of hopseed on candida strains from HIV patients, who commonly suffer oral yeast infections, non-HIV patients and a strain commonly used in controls. Researchers also tested the actions of common antimicrobial agents triclosan and chlorhexidine gluconate included in mouthwashes to treat oral yeast infections. The results showed hopseed more effectively killed candida than these commonly used substances.
Other Recommended Herbs
Other herbs that have demonstrated antifungal properties includes cinnamon, pau d'arco and echinacea juice. If treating an oral yeast infection, the University of Maryland Medical Center also suggests tea tree oil and pomegranate as they have demonstrated effectiveness against yeast in studies.
Good sleeping positions are those that keep the body aligned. They reduce pain and improve the quality of sleep. Some common sleeping positions can throw the body out of alignment, but most problems can be alleviated with the simple use of a pillow or towel.
Best Position
Sleeping on your back is the best position overall, according to CBSNews.com. The spine is allowed to stay in a natural, flat position (Reference 1).
Pillow Use
Using a pillow elevates and strains your neck. The very best position is to sleep on your back without a pillow. Or, try two pillows, one under the head and one under the knees, as recommended at MayoClinic.com (Reference 2).
Sleeping on Your Side
Sleeping on your side can help hip pain. Try to raise the knees and put a pillow between them to maintain your alignment (Reference 2).
Sleeping on Your Abdomen
Sleeping on your abdomen is the worst position for the neck and back, according to CBSNews.com (Reference 1). Try placing a pillow underneath the abdomen without using a pillow under the head for best results, according to MayoClinic.com (Reference 2).
Expert Insight
The abdomen position may help spinal disc problems, however. Otherwise, belly-sleepers should consider using a full-body pillow to switch to side-sleeping, according to CBSNews.com (Reference 1).

Not every type of epilepsy is generalized. A person could have seizure activity without impairment of his consciousness. There is an entity called "simple partial seizures" that results from epileptic activity in a small portion of the brain.
People experiencing a simple partial seizure can behave normally during seizures. Simple partial seizures have many types but I will only discuss the one in which people have repeated and unexplained episodes of abdominal symptoms. This type of partial seizures is also called autonomic seizures or abdominal seizures because it involves the autonomic nervous system (ANS) of the brain. ANS controls many dynamic functions of the human body such as heart rate, gut motility, sexual functions, maintaining blood pressure while in motion, urination, sweating, tear flow, fear reaction and more.
Instructions
1. Abdominal discomfort, nausea with "epigastric rising" (sensation of symptoms rising to the throat from the abdomen).
2. Stomach pain, vomiting, hearing bowel noise due to gas moving in the intestines, belching and flatulence.
3. Other symptoms may include pallor, flushing, sweating, goose bumps with hair standing on end, dilated pupils, increase in heart and respiration rates and frequent urination.
4. A few people may get penile erection, sexual arousal even orgasm.
5. Labs:
The gold standard test is EEG (Electro Encephalogram). This is the EKG equivalent of brain. Small electrodes are placed over certain areas of the brain and electrical activity is recorded. Diagnosis is made by finding abnormal brain waves in the tracings.
CT and MRI head may also be ordered to eliminate physical causes of seizures such as a brain tumors or stroke
When the endolymph fluid inside the labyrinth of the inner ear changes, by increasing in volume, it can cause the membrane inside the labyrinth to blow up like a balloon. This balloon can rupture when it gets too large, causing the endolymph fluid to mix with the perilymph fluid, also of the inner ear, and causing the symptoms of Meniere's disease. Kept separate, these fluids move when the head moves and help to keep a person's equilibrium. When the two fluids mix an unnatural fluid movement occurs, causing extreme vertigo.
Symptom Management as Treatment
Your doctor will likely focus on managing the vertigo attacks, reducing the frequency of the symptoms and most importantly, maintaining the patient's hearing. Removing caffeine and salt may help keep the amount of attacks down, and eliminating tobacco usage and stress will likely improve the severity of the attacks. These are the best ways to reduce the symptoms of Meniere's.
Surgical Versus Non-Surgical Treatments
For those patients with Meniere's-related hearing loss, labyrinthectomy is one surgical treatment that is available. For those without any hearing loss endolymphatic sac surgery has proven successful. However, eighty-seven percent of patients have benefited from the more conservative, non-surgical measures. Surgical treatments for the disease are often controversial because it is questionable whether surgery is really necessary for the treatment of this disease.

A cancerous mole also called Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. It is the sixth commonest cancer in the USA and the most common fatal malignancy among young adults. Understanding of the risk factors associated with melanoma is vital.
Instructions
1. Caucasians are at highest risk, followed by Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians/Pacific islanders and African Americans.
2. Sun and UV radiation is a major risk factor for melanoma. Tanning beds (sun bed or sun lamp exposure) significantly increased risk of skin melanoma.
3. Diets rich in vitamin D and carotene and low in alcohol may be associated with a reduced risk for melanoma.
4. A personal history of melanoma is associated with a higher risk of developing a second melanoma.
5. 10 percent of melanoma are familial.
6. The A, B, C, D, Es of melanoma recognition are valuable for patient education and for all clinicians. Any of the following changes in your mole, whether new or pre-existing, should alert you to seek professional advice:
Asymmetry
Border irregularities
Color variegation (ie, different colors within the same region)
Diameter greater than 6 mm
Enlargement or evolution of color change, shape, or symptoms
7. A seven point checklist designed in England is sensitive for the early detection of melanoma. It includes three major features and four minor features. Any one of the individual points mentioned below in your mole, whether new or pre-existing, should alert you to seek professional advice:
A brain aneurysm occurs when an artery in the brain develops a weakness and bulges. Much as with a tire, when the bulge gets too big or the weakness advances, the artery can rupture.
When It Ruptures
When an aneurysm ruptures, blood seeps into the gray matter of the brain or into the space around the brain, which causes a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Damage
According to Brain Aneurysm Resources, a ruptured artery in the brain can cause stroke, permanent damage to the brain and death (see Reference 1).
Statistics
An estimated 30,000 people per year potentially will have an aneurysm that results in a subarachnoid bleed. Generally speaking, 50% of these people will die within 30 days of having the hemorrhage.
Who It Affects
Aneurysm is common in people between the ages of 35 and 60. Women are more likely than men to have an aneurysm, by almost three to two.
Increase Your Survival Rate
Be aware of the signs of aneurysm and take immediate action if they occur. Sudden severe headache, nausea and vomiting, blurred or cloudy vision and sudden changes in behavior can all signal an aneurysm.
Eating spoiled fish is a guarantee for an upset stomach, intestinal distress, possible diarrhea, and a potential trip to the hospital. Like all foods, fresh is best. But judging just how fresh a fish is can be tricky unless you catch it yourself. Since most of us rely on the supermarket for our "catch of the day" here are ways to check for freshness.
Instructions
1. Smell the fish. A fishy smell is not good as it signals the fish is getting spoiled. Food experts describe the proper smell as being cucumber-like or with the clean smell of an ocean breeze.
2. Look at the scales and gills. If you're buying the entire fish, such as trout or salmon, the gills should be a bright color and the scales shiny. Dark gills and dull scales signal "old."
3. Poke the fish flesh with your finger, if you you're buying at a fresh fish market stall. If the flesh springs back quickly, it's fresh. If your fingerprint stays, move on. Fresh fish should have a bright, firm appearance and should appear moist, not dry or dull.
4. Shop from a store you trust. It's worth spending a little more to be able to choose your fish fresh from the case instead of pre-packaged. Ask the clerk when the fish was delivered. Stores often receive fresh fish deliveries on Monday and Thursday.
5. Avoid buying fillets or steaks that are mottled or spotted. These are probably bruised flesh. Look for those that have a uniform color and fresh appearance. Note that some fish, such as swordfish and halibut, naturally have dark bands near the edge.
6. Ask if the fish was previously frozen. Because water expands when frozen and can somewhat rupture the cells, a previously frozen fish doesn't taste as fresh and the flesh may not be as firm. It may also still be partially frozen, meaning you are paying additional dollars for water weight that will run off when it's thawed.
Aging people who have begun to experience sagging skin in the face and neck area are the primary candidates for a facelift. This procedure is not intended to alter the patient's look; however, it does give a fresher, more youthful appearance. A full facelift requires the skin to be lifted and pulled tightly to decrease excess skin and the appearance of wrinkles. Before the surgery, the patient will undergo a detailed consultation with the surgeon, who will evaluate the face and discuss the patient's goals. The doctor will also evaluate the overall health of the patient to determine whether she is a good candidate for the surgery. There are certain issues or conditions which will cause concern among doctors and make the surgery inadvisable. These are known as contraindications.
Smoking
Those patients who smoke must quit at least two weeks before and after any cosmetic procedure. Nicotine causes blood vessels to constrict, thus minimizing blood flow to the skin. According to the New York Times, many plastic surgeons refuse to operate on smokers, especially those seeking a procedure that involves shifting of the skin. Some doctors even require patients to submit urine tests to prove there are no traces of nicotine in the body. In addition, a patient may be required to sign a medical release form acknowledging the possibility of complications that may arise if there is nicotine still present in the blood.
Hypertension
Untreated hypertension may be cause for a physician to forgo performing a facelift. This condition may cause a facelift patient to experience more bleeding and undo stress on the heart.
Diabetes
Although people with diabetes can have plastic surgery, only those who are well-maintained are likely candidates for a facelift. According to Dr. George Commons, those who are 20% overweight become a concern. Another red flag with a diabetic patient is insulin-dependency. Higher blood sugar levels increase the body's chances of infection. Another issue with diabetics is narrow blood vessels, which impede healing time.
Blood Thinners
Those who are taking aspirin should inform their operating physician. Because it is a blood thinner, it may be advisable to avoid taking any aspirin for 5 to 7 days before the surgery. Other blood thinning agents are dietary supplements including vitamins A and E, as well as ginseng. The use of these should cease at least a week beforehand, as they can cause excessive bleeding during the procedure.
Programs for children at risk are critical to boosting self-esteem, providing life-style alternatives and offering hope. Introducing kids to various activities--individually or within a group--are means of building critical thinking skills, balancing tempers and reducing temptations for self injury. Parents, families and siblings of at risk children can also benefit from helpful programs. Several successful programs for at risk children include wilderness camps, substance abuse prevention, violence preclusion and alienation remedies.
Wilderness Camps
Wilderness camps give city kids a chance to explore nature.
A wilderness camp is a positive way for an at risk child to disassociate from an unhealthy environment and learn the value of responsibility. Wilderness camps provide outdoor activities--such as building a fire without using matches--designed to champion patience, focus and team work. "Residents eat a well-balanced and healthy diet," states AtRiskYouthProgram.com and "commune with nature, observe the wildlife and tackle challenging physical tasks" which build physical strength and self-esteem.
Substance Abuse Prevention
If your child is on drugs, seek help immediately.
Treating substance abuse is an urgent problem when it comes to children because their brains are in the process of development. The best substance abuse programs for at risk children are residential treatments. Residential treatments, according to DrugRehabTreatment.com, offer "a chance to experience predictable and consistent consequences of behavior, an opportunity to participate in community." Substance abuse programs build self-confidence and self-care. Residential treatment, in particular, helps to ward off self-destructive tendencies "and for family bonds to be repaired."
Violence Preclusion
Learning conflict resolution skills helps teens feel balanced and happy.
Violence preclusion is often a necessary program for children at risk. Whether violence is self-inflicted, due to parental abuse or a combination of both, CDC.gov promises that violence prevention programs can be offered via "home visiting," the learning of "social and conflict resolution skills and mentoring." Studies show that family counseling that focuses on building non-violent homes "can have substantial, long-term effects in reducing violent behavior by children."
Alienation Remedies
Youth led activities can help at risk children feel more comfortable.
Depression can lead to a child feeling dangerously alienated, as if he is all alone. For children who do not suffer from substance abuse or violence, there are programs that relate directly to the curing of alienation. Remedies for alienation typically include social change programs, according to TheInnovationCenter.org, where "young people learn to participate in group processes, build consensus and become more engaged in their communities." These programs are often "are run by young people in partnership with adults" and are successful at helping at risk children.
George Oshawa was a Japanese philosopher who combined elements of Buddhism, Asian medicine, Christian teachings and Western medicine to create a macrobiotic eating plan. Although it has not been medically proved, some proponents of macrobiotic eating argue that a diet of natural foods can help the body fight diseases and even cancer. Oshawa's macrobiotic way of eating has been followed for hundreds of years.
Vegetables
When following a macrobiotic diet, it is advised to consume organic foods that are locally grown, if possible. Eat a variety of vegetables with every meal. Green vegetables such as broccoli, bok choy, cabbage and leafy greens like mustard and collard greens are allowed.
Whole Grains
There are three different types of grains to consider with the macrobiotic diet: whole grains, flour products and cracked and flaked grains. Whole grains can be used often, while the other two types should be used only occasionally. Whole grains include short-grain brown rice, barley, whole wheat berries, whole oats, rye, long-grain brown rice and corn on the cob. Grains that should be included occasionally are barley grits, bulgur, couscous, rolled oats, cornmeal, quinoa, whole wheat noodles, buckwheat noodles, bread and pancakes.
Beans
Beans should be eaten only in one meal per day. Consume chickpeas, green or brown lentils and black soybeans often. Mung beans, kidney beans and lima beans can be eaten every now and then.
Fruits
Enjoy fruits two to three times per week. Fruits can be fresh or dried. Apples, grapes, peaches, blueberries, strawberries and melons are good fruit choices. Tropical fruits such as bananas and pineapples should be avoided.
Foods to Avoid
Refined sugars and flour should be avoided when following a macrobiotic diet. This means no cookies, muffins, chips, popcorn, white rice or bread products. There are also certain vegetables that should be avoided or used very sparingly: artichokes, asparagus, okra, potato, eggplant, fennel, green or red pepper, tomato, yams and avocados.
Dairy and meat products also should be avoided when following a macrobiotic meal plan. Fish is allowed for occasional use.

The retina is like a film in the eye, similar to a camera. The inside of your eye is filled with a jelly like substance called vitreous, which is very sticky. It serves its purpose only before birth. Afterwards, it is superfluous. When the vitreous gets loose from the retina it is known as retina adhesion.
Instructions
1. Treat floaters with caution. They may turn to more serious diseases like retinal detachment. When the glue like substance pulls away from the retina it might take some small pieces of the retina with it. These floaters are a sign the retina is harmed.
2. The retina feels no pain as there are no nerve endings in it. The rods and cones in your eye send out some bright lights which appear like flashes. Generally the light flashes are only seen when the light is very low and usually on the side of the eye.
3. The eye has various blood vessels. Most of the blood vessels in the retina supply nutrition. The vitreous, on breaking away, may pull the retina so much that it could rupture a blood vessel. When this occurs, this is called hemorrhage of the eye. It is brown or black in color.
4. When blood enters the eye like this, it will generally clear in one to three months. However if the tear is at the back of the vitreous then there is a higher chance of a tear. To diagnose it, an ultrasound of the eye is performed.
5. If, on separation, the glue is so strong as to not go easily then the retina has to give way to the vitreous. Thus a retinal tear occurs. When the retina tears it is generally on the side so vision is not lost. When the vitreous enters behind the retina there is a chance of retinal separation.
6. When the vitreous separates, the doctor checks your eye with a high power light and a scleral depressor. He may numb your eyeballs and use special contact lenses to check for retinal tears. Floaters can be removed by surgery but it is risky, as all surgeries are.
7. The retinal tear is treated by using laser surgery, which normally lasts about 10 minutes.

Peptic ulcers are sores that develop in the stomach, small intestine and esophagus. Contrary to what is commonly thought, ulcers are most often the result of a bacterial infection or the side effect of a medication, not the result of stress or eating too many spicy foods. The most common symptom of peptic ulcers is abdominal pain. The pain usually strikes during sleep or when the stomach is empty. Other signs include vomiting blood, unexplained weight loss, changes in appetite and dark-colored stool.
Antibiotics
Because peptic ulcers are most commonly the result of a bacterial infection, antibiotics are frequently prescribed as treatment. Most patients need to take multiple antibiotics because one typically won't be strong enough to clear up the infection. Commonly prescribed antibiotics include amoxicillin, metronidazole and clarithromycin. A typical course of antibiotics for peptic ulcers is two weeks, but that depends on the how many ulcers a patient has and what type they are.
Acid Blockers
Many patients need to take an acid-blocking medication along with antibiotics to treat their peptic ulcers. These medications, called histamine blockers, limit the amount of hydrochloric acid the stomach produces, which will alleviate discomfort and also allow healing to occur. Common acid blockers prescribed for peptic ulcers include nizatidine, ranitidine, famotidine and cimetidine. They are available both over the counter and as a prescription. Some prescription drugs containing both a combination of two antibiotics and an acid blocker have been designed specifically to treat peptic ulcers.
Home Treatment
While being treated for peptic ulcers, there are steps you can take at home to limit discomfort and promote healing. For example, avoiding foods and beverages that can irritate ulcers, including acidic and spicy foods and alcohol, can help prevent ulcer pain. Smoking can irritate ulcers and is best avoided, too. It's also a good idea not to take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which can irritate ulcers. If you need a pain-relieving medication, try acetaminophen instead.

Buddhist meditation is the practice of being mindful in all you do, as you are doing it. You practice Buddhist meditation by sitting at least twice a day while staying mindful of your meditation object. Gradually increase the sitting time and carry your meditation over into the rest of your life.
Instructions
1. Find an object to use for your meditation object. The most common is the breath since it is always there. You can meditate on other objects, like a lit candle.
2. Sit in a chair or on the floor on a cushion. Buddhist meditation calls for the lotus position, which is cross-legged on a meditation cushion, left foot on right knee and right foot on left knee. If that position is too difficult just sit on the cushion or even use a regular chair.
3. Make sure your spine is erect. Your head should be upright. Your eyes can be closed or half closed. Hands should be folded in your lap with the right hand in the left hand so the thumbs come together and touch lightly.
4. Concentrate on your breath. Just breathe in, count 1, breathe out, count 1. Now breathe in again, count 2, and out again, count 2. Repeat 8 more times staying mindful of the breath. Start the counting over.
5. Notice that you are not counting your breath anymore. This is fine. Bring your attention back to your breath as soon as you notice that you stopped counting. Resume counting with the count of 1. Remain mindful of the breath for 15 minutes.
6. Set aside 15 minutes, twice a day to do regular meditation. Later, as you progress, spend more time meditating. Consider taking a Buddhist meditation course or going on a retreat. Enjoy your meditation.

Metabolic syndrome is a medical condition that puts patients at risk for cardiovascular disease, including risk of stroke and heart attack. There is an association between liver function and metabolic syndrome.
Features of Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is characterized by patients having at least three of the following health concerns: being overweight, having high triglyceride (a bad type of fat) levels in the blood, having high blood pressure, having high blood sugar levels and having low levels of "good" cholesterol.
Liver Functions
The liver is responsible for performing many functions crucial to overall health, including the regulation of chemical levels in the blood, hormone regulation, processing nutrients and vital proteins, detoxification and elimination of wastes, glucose conversion and bile production, among many others.
Relation Between Liver Dysfunction and Metabolic Syndrome
Abnormalities in the liver as a result of various conditions, such as fatty liver and hepatitis, affect the liver's ability to ensure normal blood sugar levels, and may cause a build up of fat and toxins in organ tissue and the bloodstream. Obesity, fat build up in the bloodstream and abnormal blood sugar levels are symptoms of metabolic syndrome.
Correlation of Health Conditions
The American College of Physicians published the results of two 2005 studies that correlate liver abnormalities and metabolic syndrome. One conclusion suggests that metabolic syndrome patients are less likely to resolve liver dysfunction; the other study concluded that metabolic syndrome strongly predicts nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Hypopituitarism
The American Journal of Medical Sciences published the conclusion of a study that states there is an increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome and liver dysfunction associated with NAFLD in hypopituitarism.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeries can be stress-inducing.
If you have a bothersome or painful area in your mouth, whether it be related to your teeth, gums, tongue or inner cheeks, you should visit your dentist for a consultation. The dentist may not be able to perform the surgery, but he will refer you to a physician specializing in oral or maxillofacial (face/jaw area) diagnoses. If you are informed that surgery will be required, several steps can be taken to better prepare yourself for the operation.
Instructions
Instructions
1. Schedule a meeting with the oral or maxillofacial surgeon that you are referred to. Describe the specific part of your inner cheek that is causing you pain or concern. Tell the surgeon, in detail, what the pain feels like and when it is most severe. If after taking a close look at your mouth and/or performing any required testing (X-rays, cultures or blood work) the surgeon deems surgery necessary, he will inform you.
2. Remain calm regarding your diagnosis. It is natural to be nervous at the thought of surgery, especially if this will be your first. The inner cheek is a small area, and the operation is likely to be quick. Don't fret about the pain involved -- depending on the operation your cheek requires, a local anesthetic will numb the area. Anesthetic may also be used to make you unconscious during the surgery.
3. Stay healthy. During the days or weeks leading up to the surgery on your cheek, do everything possible to avoid falling ill. Sick patients are often not allowed under anesthetics, which may delay the planned date of your operation. If your surgery is urgent, mind this precaution with even more care.
4. Follow any specific advice given to you by your physician. Depending on the diagnoses of your cheek, the physician may place you on an antibiotic schedule. You may be asked to avoid certain foods that may irritate the cheek, such as crunchy chips, nuts and seeds or acidic citrus fruits. Activities like smoking, gum-chewing or using a straw may be prohibited. Follow these instructions exactly.
5. Care for your cheek after the surgery. Consume a liquids-only diet if recommended by your physician. If any stitching was required, refrain from touching the area with your tongue. If you are allowed to consume chewable foods, chew on the opposite side of your mouth and take your time.

A walking cane is a walking aid that can improve the user's mobility and balance. Walking canes come in a number of shapes, sizes and weights. Some have ornamental flourishes, and others fold up to be more compact and easier to transport. Walking canes are simple tools, but there are ways to make the most of the help they offer.
Instructions
1. Decide the height of your walking cane. There are two rules of thumb in deciding the cane's height (and a doctor can help you figure this out): If your arm is bent at a 90-degree angle, the cane is too high; if your arm doesn't bend at all, the cane is too low. Find a balance between the two that works best for you, according to Walking Cane World.
2. Use the cane on the opposite side of your injury to strengthen your good side, regardless of which hand is dominant. Put all of your weight on the cane side of your body. The cane should act as another limb on your body.
3. Walk with the cane by first stepping forward with both your injured or weak leg and the cane. Once the outstretched cane is supporting your outstretched, weak leg, step forward with your uninjured leg.
4. Keep your back as straight up as possible to maintain good posture and to avoid back injuries. Your tendency will be to slump, but resist this. If you develop a serious back injury to go with your leg injury, you won't be able to walk at all. Go a bit slower and maintain good posture.

The common cold is caused by one of hundreds of viruses. The virus produces an infection that causes the walls of your respiratory tract to swell and your body to produce excess mucus. This results in the typical symptoms of a cold: runny nose, nasal congestion, cough, sinus pressure and fever. You don't have to resort to conventional medication to treat a cold--there are plenty of alternative, all-natural remedies that will treat your cold and leave you with few side effects.
Function
Natural cold remedies work with your body, rather than against it like conventional medication, to fight off a cold virus. Whereas conventional medicine's main goal is to eliminate symptoms, alternative remedies work to tackle the root of an illness. Some herbal remedies contain compounds that boost your immune system. One form of natural medication, homeopathy, lives by the philosophy "like cures like." Homeopathic remedies work like vaccines, except they're all-natural and nontoxic. Remedies consist of diluted natural substances that would cause the symptom you're trying to cure if used in large amounts. But, since you're taking such a small dose, the remedy stimulates your body's curative powers to treat the ailment.
Types
Echinacea is an herb used for hundreds of years by American Indians and has been known to fight viruses and activate the immune system due to its antibacterial properties. Take echinacea at the first signs of a cold or as an immune booster during cold season. Onion and garlic both have antibacterial properties as well. Garlic contains allicin, a potent antibiotic. Cook dishes with plenty of onion and garlic during cold season or when you come down with a virus.
You have to define your symptoms to pinpoint the homeopathic remedy you should take. Pulsatilla is taken if you have thick, bland, green or yellowish mucus. Belladonna is taken at the sudden onset of a cold.
Effects
Natural remedies have minimal side effects. Homeopathic remedies may initially reproduce symptoms, but this should subside. Speak to a certified homeopath if you're unsure which remedy is right for you.
Considerations
Use common-sense procedures to treat a cold. Blow your nose often to get rid of excess mucus--just make sure to blow gently. Get plenty of rest to allow your body to focus on fighting the virus. If you have a sore throat, you can gargle with salt water to moisten your bronchial tubes or use a humidifier. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and help detoxify your body. Sleeping with two pillows may seen awkward, but it helps drain nasal passages.
Prevention/Solution
Preventing a cold from happening in the first place will save you a lot of hassle. Since stress can weaken your immune system, develop healthy ways of dealing with daily stress, like getting regular exercise, doing yoga or meditation or consciously taking time out of your busy schedule to relax. Getting adequate sleep and having proper nutrition can boost your immune system to defend yourself from viruses. Probably the most effective way to prevent a cold is to properly wash your hands--and do it often--especially when returning from a public place. You can also use hand sanitizer for times when you aren't near a sink.

Essential oils enhance moods and lighten the spirit. Essential oils are steam distilled from roots, wood, resins, berries, flowers or leaves. As essential oils are readily absorbed into the bloodstream, they have a direct effect on the brain. The aromatic essential oil molecules also interact with the body's chemistry, making them effective in healing the body and uplifting the spirits.
Instructions
1. Use chamomile, jasmine, marjoram, palma rosa, rose, rosemary or ylang-ylang essential oils to ease anger.
Put 30 to 40 drops of the chosen essential oil into 4 ounces of distilled water.
Add to spray bottle and shake well.
Use as an all-over body spritzer.
2. Mix 30 drops melissa, 30 drops lemongrass, 30 drops ylang-ylang, 20 drops benzoin, 20 drops clove and 20 drops cumin essential oil into 4 fluid ounces (120 ml) of distilled water to elevate your mood.
Put the essential oils into a spray bottle.
Shake well, spray over your head about 10 times. With every 2 or 3 sprays, stop and inhale deeply. Be sure to close your eyes to avoid any eye irritation while spraying.
3. Combine 2 drops jasmine, 2 drops rose and 5 drops frankincense essential oils with 1/2 tablespoon (71/2 ml) jojoba oil to counteract emotional insecurity, selfish behavior, aggression, depression and fear.
Pour into a dark bottle.
Shake well, apply a few drops of the mixed essential oils to the base of the spine.
4. Make a sensuous perfumed body oil using 20 drops cinnamon, 40 drops myrrh, 60 drops patchouli, 40 drops clove, 5 ml (1 teaspoon) bois de rose, 40 drops rose essential oils mixed with 60 ml (2 ounces) carrier oil such as jojoba or grapeseed oil.
Blend the essential oils with the carrier oil in a 120 ml (4 ounce) dark glass bottle.
Shake to mix the oils.
Put a few drops of the combined oils on the torso, lower back or inner thigh area. Do not use the oil on the genital area or around the eyes because the cinnamon essential oil is irritating to mucous membranes and delicate skin.
Mini strokes, also called transient ischemic attacks (TIA), start like strokes but do not have any lasting side effects and usually resolve within one hour. Because approximately 33 percent of the people who have mini strokes eventually have more severe strokes, proper treatment for mini strokes is important. Treatment for mini strokes can include drug therapy or surgical intervention that can prevent more serious strokes in the future.
Drug Therapy
The goal of drug therapy in treating mini strokes is to prevent the likelihood of a stroke in the future. According to the Mayo Clinic, the two types of drugs that are frequently prescribed to treat mini stroke are anti-platelet drugs and anticoagulants. Anti-platelet drugs keep the platelets from sticking together and forming clots. Aspirin is an anti-platelet drug that is inexpensive and has very few side effects. Prescription anti-platelet drugs include Aggrenox and Ticlodipine. Anticoagulants work to prevent blood clots from forming by affecting clotting-system proteins. Heparin can be used for a short period of time and Warfarin (Coumadin) can be used for long-term anticoagulation. Patients on either of these drugs need to be carefully monitored and be prepared for the possibility of easy bruising or bleeding.
Surgical Intervention
The Mayo Clinic lists carotid endarterectomy and carotid angioplasty as the procedures that are most often used to treat mini stroke surgically. When the carotid artery has moderate or severe narrowing, carotid endarterectomy may be recommended. This procedure allows fatty deposits to be cleared from the carotid artery so that a TIA or stroke can be prevented. During this procedure, the artery is opened with a surgical incision so that the atherosclerotic plaque can be removed. Once the artery is clear of these deposits, it is closed and the patient is able to recover from the procedure. Carotid angioplasty may also be recommended. During this procedure, the carotid artery is opened using a device that is like a balloon. A small wire tube called a stent is inserted into the artery to help to keep it open and prevent TIA or stroke in the future.
Lifestyle Changes
According to the Cleveland Clinic, there are several lifestyle changes that can reduce the chance of acute stroke. Diet and exercise are important for keeping mini stroke victims in good health. Weight loss may be necessary to reach a healthy weight and maintain it. If a mini stroke victim has high blood pressure, it should be treated to prevent additional mini strokes and reduce the chances of having a stroke in the future. People who have had mini strokes should also avoid smoking and excess alcohol consumption.
