The Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a way to re-educate your body to reduce the unnecessary tension you hold in muscles. According to Alexander Technique teacher Robert Rickover, the technique teaches people to be "sensitive to messages their body is sending them, and how they can respond in a useful and constructive manner."

The Alexander Technique promotes ease of movement.

History

Frederick Matthias Alexander, an Australian actor in the 1890s, often lost his voice on stage. Doctors offered no solution, so Alexander practiced in front of mirrors to study how he used his body. He found that the tension caused by his head movement compressed his larynx, leading to the loss of voice.

Although he found a way of moving his head that solved the problem, on stage he returned to the old movement out of habit. Alexander continued to experiment and learned stop the old movement and consciously let the new movement happen. He developed the Alexander Technique to teach people use their conscious mind to change subconscious patterns of muscle tension.

Principles

The Alexander Technique teacher leads the student through movements using gentle hands-on guidance. The teacher does not attempt to fix anything but rather to guide the student to finding an easier and more natural way to move without excess tension.

Another principle of the Alexander Technique is primary control, which refers to the relationship of the head, neck and torso. Alexander believed that this relationship is key to releasing excess tension and creating easier movement.

Benefits

The benefits of the Alexander Technique include easier movement, less strain when doing activities, less pain, more comfortable posture, easier breathing and developing the ability to change habits that interfere with optimal movement.

Who Can the Alexander Technique Help?

According to the Complete Guide To The Alexander Technique, the technique is useful for people with repetitive strain injury or carpal tunnel syndrome, backache or stiff neck and shoulders, and people who experience tension because they sit at a computer for long periods. The technique can also help singers, musicians, actors, dancers or athletes who feel they are not performing at their full potential.

Misconceptions [ref 2]

Rickover addresses misconceptions about the Alexander Technique. The first is that it is a type of physical therapy. Rather the Alexander Technique is an educational process that teaches students identify and release tension. Often, releasing tension leads to therapeutic effects. Another misconception is that the technique is only for performers. The technique is for anyone who wants to better perform the activities of his life.

Finding an Alexander Technique Teacher

A qualified Alexander Technique teacher has been through a three-year training program. Around the world are several thousand Alexander teachers. Most are members of a professional society, such as the American Society for the Alexander Technique or Alexander Technique International.

Testing Athletes For Hiv

Why Test Athletes?

HIV is transmitted via the exchange of bodily fluids, including blood. One of the main reasons to test athletes for HIV is to guard against the risk of inadvertent transmission of HIV between athletes. Although many fluids, such as sweat and saliva, can't cause infection with HIV, there is always a chance of accidental transmission via blood. If one HIV positive athlete falls or otherwise has a cut on his skin, infected blood will come out, which could potentially enter into a cut or other abrasion of another athlete, causing the second athlete to become infected with HIV.

Confidentiality

One of the primary concerns in HIV testing for athletes is confidentiality. Many athletes are required to be tested for performance enhancing substances because it can give them a competitive advantage. HIV testing, however, is done purely for health reasons, and by law health information carries a high standard of confidentiality. Mandatory HIV testing would not only be an invasion of privacy, but would also carry the risk that unauthorized people would be able to find out an athlete's HIV status.

Considerations

For any athletic organization to create an HIV testing policy, a number of points need to be addressed. The organization would have to determine the mode of testing (blood testing is more accurate but also more invasive than urinalysis) and who would have access to the HIV test results. All athletes would also have to sign a consent form that would allow all designated persons to have access to the HIV test records. A good policy would also need to have penalties in the event that the basic guidelines are broken, including for unauthorized people accessing the information.

Alternative Therapy For High Blood Pressure

Hypertension, better known as high blood pressure, is a common condition with the potential for very serious complications like heart disease and stroke. Treatments aim to lower blood pressure by reducing the volume of blood, slowing the heartbeat and acting on blood vessels to help relax them and prevent narrowing. Several alternative therapies might be of benefit; you should consult with a health care practitioner experienced in using alternative treatments for this condition, especially if you are turning to natural therapies as a sole means of treatment.

Supplements

Omega-3 fatty acids can decrease both cholesterol and blood pressure; talk to your doctor about an appropriate dose. High doses can interfere with blood-thinning medications. Coenzyme Q-10, calcium and magnesium might lower blood pressure slightly; take 100 mg, 350 to 500 mg and 1,000 mg daily respectively. L-arginine helps blood vessels dilate, which lowers blood pressure; take 1,000 to 2,000 mg daily. Potassium in a prescription dosage might also be of benefit, but you should talk to you doctor about using potassium supplements for this condition at any dose.

Herbs

The following herbs have demonstrated blood pressure-lowering effects. Achillea wilhelmsii (15 to 20 drops of tincture twice a day), hibiscus tea (use two tbsp. of dried herb in one cup of water once a day), reishi mushroom (150-300 milligrams three times a day) or garlic extract (400 mg three times a day) . Discuss using garlic or reishi mushroom with your doctor if you are taking blood thinning medications; they can increase their effects.

Homeopathy

The following treatments are commonly used in homeopathy to address high blood pressure. Homeopathy is a very specific system of medicine with suggested treatments based on many individual factors including emotional factors and psychological makeup. Take as directed on the product label.

Argentum nitricum works best if you are prone to feeling claustrophobic and strongly crave sweet and salty foods. Aurum metallicum is most effective if you are of a more serious nature, feel worse at the end of the day and have a strong desire to drink alcohol and feel angry when you have failed at something, particularly career related. Use calcarea carbonica if you often feel tired and overwhelmed when ill, have clammy hands and feet and usually feel cold. Lachesis is most effective if you are usually talkative and agitated, fear disease, and feel tightness in the chest. Use nux vomica if you are prone to being impatient, get angry over delays, and are ambitious. You might also crave coffee and other stimulating food and drink.

Massage

Managing stress is an important part of naturally controlling blood pressure. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, massage can reduce blood pressure and steroid hormones, which are indicative of stress. If you have high blood pressure and are under a lot of stress, massage therapy might be of particular benefit for you.

Acupuncture and Meditation

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center,a small number of studies indicate that acupuncture and transcendental meditation (TM) can reduce blood pressure. More studies are needed to form definitive links. Acupuncture usually requires a number of sessions to treat a particular condition, and you will only benefit from meditation if you do it on a regular basis. To start off, you should try for at least a couple of times a week for at least 15 minutes.

How Does Health Improve After Quitting Smoking

Immediate Results

According to a report by the American Cancer Society, smoking contributes to almost one out of every five deaths in the United States, but by quitting smoking, health can begin to improve within minutes. After quitting smoking, it only takes 20 minutes for one's blood pressure and heart rate to drop. Within 8 to 12 hours, the level of carbon monoxide in the blood decreases. After two weeks of not smoking, the body circulates blood more efficiently.

Lung Function

According to the Mercy Behavioral Health Center, smoking is a major factor in lung cancer; however, after only three months of not smoking, lung function begins to improve. Within nine months of quitting, shortness of breath and coughing decrease, and the lungs have repaired their ability to function, making it easier to clear out mucus and reduce infection.

Heart Disease and Stroke

The American Cancer Society states that smoking can lead to coronary heart disease and stroke. However, after just one year of not smoking, the risk of coronary heart disease decreases by half, compared to a smoker's risk. After 15 years of not smoking, the rate of coronary heart disease lowers to the amount of someone who has never smoked. The chances of avoiding a stroke also improve. In five years, the risk of having a stroke decreases to that of a person who does not smoke. Smoking cessation also lowers the risk of smoking-related diseases, such as pneumonia and emphysema, to that of a nonsmoker.

Cancer

The Mercy Behavioral Health Center estimates that smoking is related to one-third of cancers, including cancer of the lungs, tongue, throat, stomach and pancreas. Within 10 years of quitting smoking, the risk of dying from lung cancer is 50 percent less than a smoker's. Other forms of smoking-related cancer decrease within 10 years as well. The American Cancer Society calls smoking-related deaths the single most-preventable cause of death in the United States, because smoking cigarettes is a voluntary habit that can significantly shorten people's lifespans. Some smokers may think they have done too much damage already, but quitting smoking at any time helps improve one's health, both in the short term and long term.

What Is The Meaning Of Green Quartz

Stones have been used as talismans for centuries.

According to Ellen Steiber, author of "A Rumor of Gems," most cultures, even from prerecorded history, used quartz ritualistically. Similarly, human nature has led us to associate meaning with colors. Fusing these two principles, the many colors of quartz each contain their own mystical uses and abilities, including green quartz.

History

Green naturally associates with nature and abundance.

Different cultures associated the color green with a variety of things, but the general notion is its balance between warm reds and cool blues. Feelings of peace and a closeness to nature reverberate through all interpretations. Moods associated with green range from illness to envy. Therefore, green quartz either encourages the positive, for example peace, or wards against the negative, like illness.

Energies

Chakra points are also used during meditation.

Ancient Indian cultures divided the body into seven chakra or energy points. Placed on the center of the chest, green crystals stimulate the heart chakra, promoting healing and universal love. Especially the heart, lungs, glands and muscles heal under the power of these crystals.

Amulets

New Age followers use green quartz as an amulet to help with fertility, tranquility and positivity. Jewelry made with the powerful stone adorn those who feel a need for centering themselves. Again the idea of universal love is pervasive, along with a sense of nature, in reference to the color green.

Charms

Other traditions use green quartz for luck, prosperity, hope and even wealth. The presence of the stone is thought to reaps benefits by itself and is associated with extra luck when placed in a left pocket. Green quartz is also thought to play a role in decision making and leadership by bringing empathy and compassion.

Sciences

Gem & Mineral Miners claims that psychotherapists have had successes treating physical ailments related to the chakra point with green quartz.

Vinegar Miracle Cures

In the holistic community, vinegar, particularly apple cider vinegar, is known as somewhat of a miracle cure-all. It can cure everything from infections to acne and it is fairly inexpensive, safe and easy to use. There are many uses for vinegar, so keeping a bottle of distilled or apple cider vinegar around the house is a wise investment.

Acne and Pimples

Many people of all ages suffer from acne. This can be a mild condition to a severe one and depending on how severe the problem is, it can be extremely embarrassing for the individual. Teens and adolescents are often worried about facial acne, but it can be a real problem for adults, too. Effective treatments can be very expensive and time-consuming. Many people don't realize that distilled vinegar can be just as effective for treating acne and preventing it. Apple cider vinegar will also work effectively. Some people keep a vial of vinegar in their bathroom and dab a little on the affected areas two-to-three times a day. The vinegar improves the circulation in the face, which is why it effectively reduces blemishes. Please note that using vinegar on your skin every day will eventually dry out your skin, so be sure to apply moisturizer as well.

Urinary-Tract Infections

Both apple cider vinegar and distilled white vinegar work as an effective treatment for urinary-tract infections (UTI's). There are two ways you can cure an infection with vinegar. The first method is to drink vinegar water throughout the day. You should be drinking six-to-eight glasses of water anyway in order to keep yourself well-hydrated and to cleanse your inner system. Putting a lot of fluids through your system will help ensure that you clean yourself out. You can make vinegar water by adding one-to-two teaspoons of vinegar to 16 ounces of water.

The other method for getting rid of a urinary tract infection (or yeast infection) is to fill a tub full of warm water. Add three cups of distilled vinegar and one cup of salt to the bathtub as it is filling up with water. Sit in the tub of vinegar water for 10-to-15 minutes. This will help clean the infected areas on the outside.

Wart Removal

For warts that are on the hands or feet, the affected extremity can be soaked in water, which has had apple cider vinegar added to it up to three times a day. Add one-to-two cups of apple cider vinegar to warm water, and soak your hand or foot in the mixture for 10-to-15 minutes. Do this two-to-three times a day for two weeks, total. This is a very effective way to get rid of warts. I find it most effective in getting rid of plantar warts.

Naturally Cure Acidic Saliva

The saliva our body produces is either acidic, alkali or neutral in its pH balance. If your saliva is too acidic, you can experience problems such as tooth decay, dry mouth and bad breath. It is possible to bring the pH balance in your mouth to a normal level, however, and you can do it naturally.

Instructions

1. Test your pH balance. To determine how acidic your saliva is, test the balance in your mouth. Drugstores stock pH strips that you simply stick in your mouth. The strip will indicate your saliva's acidity is. If your pH level is below 7.0, your saliva is considered acidic.

2. Change your diet. The foods you eat play a large part in saliva acidity. Meats, eggs, fish and some dairy products are highly acidic and can affect your pH balance. Reduce the amount of these foods and increase your intake of alkaline food such as berries, fruits and vegetables. Almonds are also alkaline and eating a few of these per day can reduce your acid levels if they are not seriously high.

3. Supplement with natural minerals. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium play an important role in maintaining a healthy pH level. Discuss your concerns with your doctor and find out how much of these minerals you may need.

4. Increase your intake of foods and juices containing potassium. Potassium is another vital component in maintaining a healthy pH balance. Tomatoes, potatoes and bananas are all rich in potassium.

5. Avoid foods and drinks loaded with sugar. If your saliva is acidic, consuming excess amounts of sugar will further irritate the condition. Replace soft drinks and coffee with water, and reduce your intake of sweets.

Identify A Police Impersonator

Identify a Police Impersonator

Criminals across the country have tried to impersonate police officers. Some police impersonators pull over unsuspecting people while driving. Women are especially vulnerable. Most people trust a police officer and let their guard down. The crimes impersonators commit range from robbery, to rape and murder. There are steps you can take to help you identify a police impersonator and avoid becoming a victim.

Instructions

1. Consider why you are getting pulled over. If you are driving and are sure you were not speeding or breaking the law, be cautious when the officer approaches you. Most of the time there may be a problem you were unaware of. However keep your guard up and ask why you are being pulled over.

2. Look at the car. It may be hard to get a good view of a car that pulled you over, especially at night. But do your best to determine if it is a law enforcement vehicle. Most vehicles will have several emergency lights, not just the flashing red or blue light. Keep in mind that most unmarked police cars are not doing traffic patrol.

3. Ask for identification. Police impersonators can easily obtain a uniform that looks authentic. Ask for photo identification and a badge. The police officer should be willing to comply.

4. Watch his behavior. When you ask for identification, pay close attention to how he acts. Most officers are aware that criminals impersonate the police. Therefore they should be professional and courteous about showing identification. Look for signs of anxiety such as the officer fidgeting or raising his voice.

5. Call 911. If you are unsure an officer is the real deal, don't hesitate to call 911. The dispatcher can verify where an officer is and help you determine if the officer who stopped you is a fake. Trust your instincts. Its better to be safe than sorry.

Chigger Skin Irritation

Chiggers are a type of mite that bite skin and feed on flesh as they grow in their larval stage. Once they reach full adulthood, they feed only off the ground. When a chigger bites your skin, it causes an allergic reaction and irritated itching for several days.

Chigger Bites

When a chigger bites a human, it attacks only thin areas of skin, such as you would find in your skin's wrinkles and creases. The chigger injects saliva into your skin as it bites.

Saliva Enzymes

The chigger's saliva contains an enzyme that breaks down your skin and liquefies it, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. The chigger then feeds on your liquified skin, not your blood as with other biting insects.

Skin Reactions

Your skin reacts to the chigger bite by creating a tubelike structure around the path of the saliva. This tube is called a stylostome, and it works like a straw for the feeding chigger and also irritates the surrounding skin.

Itching

The appearance of a red welt happens when the stylostome irritates the skin around the chigger bite. The itching occurs because of your body's reaction to the saliva and stylostome.

Duration

You would probably brush off the chigger when you feel the itch. Then you will continue to feel an itching sensation for a day or two after the bite occurs, and it will take a week to 10 days for your body to fully absorb the stylostome and the welt to disappear.

What Makes A Good Chiropractor

Awaiting the next patient

A chiropractor is a health-care professional that "focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health," according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). What makes a chiropractor good is his ability to listen to patients, be congenial and be board certified in some specialty, like orthopedics or neurology.

Expert Insight

The Mayo Clinic considers a good chiropractor to be a practitioner who is willing to work with other members of the patient's health-care team.

Consultation

The Mayo Clinic also recommends that a person first consult with the prospective chiropractor in order to determine how he will address her problem. If the patient is not comfortable with the practitioner's methodology, he is not the right one for her.

Warning

A good chiropractic practitioner will be board certified in some specialty, such as orthopedics or neurology, according to Dr. Neill H. Payne of the Family Chiropractic Clinic in Black Mountain, NC.

Identification

A good chiropractor should listen to a person's concerns, respect her opinion and answer all questions honestly and factually.

Considerations

Talk to friends and acquaintances about their chiropractors. Enthusiasm over a particular doctor may be an indication of his competence and ability to work with you congenially.

Palpate Your Thyroid Gland

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland located in the neck. It one of the endocrine glands responsible for regulating many metabolic functions in the body, including: body temperature, body weight, and digestion. The function of every cell in the body depends on the hormones produced by the thyroid. Palpating the thyroid is one way to ensure that there are no irregularities, which may be a sign of a metabolic disorder or cancer.

Instructions

Palpate the Tyroid

1. Gently extend your neck while looking upward.

2. Locate the Adam's apple, which is the protruding piece of cartilage on the mid-line of the neck. If you cannot find your Adam's apple, then locate halfway between the jaw line and shoulder blade.

3. Place the fingers of both hands down two cartilage rings below the Adam's apple (about an inch downward) and along the sides of the windpipe. The cartilage feels like a raised and hard ring under the skin.

4. Swallow. Take a sip of water if need be. The thyroid should rise underneath your fingers as you swallow. You should feel the over the entire thyroid, noting any changes in consistency, size, nodules or tenderness. A normal thyroid should be symmetrica. An enlarged thyroid can often be seen as well as felt. If there are any inconsistencies that you are worried about, consult your physician for a more detailed exam.

What Are The Benefits Of Salt Lamps

With all of the stresses and problems of day to day life people are always looking for the next big stress reliever. Massage chairs, aroma therapy and even meditation have all been tried by many people with a variety of success. One of the newer ideas, which has shown effectiveness, are salt lamps.

Definition

A salt lamp is nothing more than a large, heated crystal of salt kept on a base.

Ionization

When a salt lamp is heated, the crystal ionizes the air. This makes the air cleaner, and it assists in controlling allergies and respiratory infections.

Relaxation

A crystal salt lamp can be a great aid to relaxation. Being inside the ionized field of air enhances relaxation, and it can aid in creating the proper atmosphere for massage or meditation.

Concentration

Keeping a salt crystal lamp at one's desk can enhance that person's ability to concentrate effectively for longer periods of time.

Feng Shui

For those who practice the art of Feng Shui, salt crystal lamps can be placed at strategic locations to help enhance the chi of a room.

Cpr Techniques

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, is the act of administering chest compressions and breaths for a person that is not breathing or does not have a heartbeat. CPR must only be used in the event of an emergency and can only be performed for a limited amount of time before more urgent medical care is needed. To truly learn CPR, enroll in a certification course. CPR guidelines are always changing and the course will keep you up-to-date on the latest requirements.

CPR Technique

There are different techniques to administering CPR depending on whether the victim is a child or an adult. When coming upon an unconscious adult, always check to make sure it is safe to approach him. Try to rouse her. If he is unresponsive, immediately tell someone to find help or call 911. If you are alone, call 911 before taking any other action.

Check for any breathing or heart pumps. You can do this by listening on her chest for heartbeats or by taking a pulse. Look for the rise and fall of is chest for breathing or place your hand in front of his nose and mouth to feel for air. If there is no activity, you will have to begin CPR.

Remembering the ABCs of CPR can be useful. A=airway. Always lean the head back and check to see if something is blocking the airway of the victim's throat. Administer a careful finger sweep if you can see an item within the throat.

B=breathing. If the airway is clear, administer rescue breathing. You must always begin the breathing before you start the chest compressions. If you are forcing circulation with no oxygen in it, you are only wasting time. Position the head back with the mouth and throat as open as possible. Pinch the nose and cover his mouth with yours to prevent any escaping air. Give two full breaths, enough to lift the chest. Then you can begin compression.

C=circulation. Heavy chest compressions will restore the circulation and get the oxygen you just supplied to the victim moving throughout his body. After two rescue breaths, administer 30 chest compressions. Keep your elbows locked. Position your weak hand directly over the sternum and place your strong hand over and intertwined with your weak hand. Rock forward and press your hands vertically down on the victim's chest, depressing the sternum by 1 ½ to 2 inches. Repeat 30 times and begin the two rescue breaths again. Continue until you are relieved by medical professional.

Tips for Child CPR

CPR for a child is similar to the procedure for an adult. However, there are some differences. When coming upon an unconscious child, check the vital signs as before. If you are alone with an unconscious child in need of CPR, administer 5 cycles or about 2 minutes of CPR before calling for help. Be gentler in your breaths and chest compression. Only use one hand during chest compressions. Continue the cycle until you are relieved by medical personnel.

Open An Independant Pharmacy Business

In a country packed with chain pharmacies, more and more pharmacists choose to open independent pharmacies. They do this because as an independent pharmacist they can set their own hours and run their pharmacy as they wish, and not be restricted by the rules and restrictions set by a chain. People often prefer to frequent an independent pharmacist because they tend to have a more small-town feel. The pharmacist can take the time to get to know her customers and make sure that they understand their medications. If you are interested in owning an independent pharmacy, learn open your own store

Instructions

1. Purchase an existing pharmacy. Taking over an established pharmacy is a wonderful way to get into the independent pharmacy business. You will inherit a loyal customer base, a proven location and relationships with drug wholesalers and other vendors. This option is becoming more widely available as many independent pharmacists are nearing the age of retirement and are ready to sell their stores.

2. Purchase a franchise. Opening a franchise location is a relatively easy way to break into the retail pharmacy business. The company that you contract with will assist you in getting your store up and running. They can help with everything from securing a location to establishing accounts with drug wholesalers. Being a franchisee is the best of both worlds. You have an established brand name to give you business advice and support, but you can operate as an independently owned store.

3. Open your own pharmacy from scratch. This is the most difficult way to get started as an independent pharmacist, but it could also be the most rewarding. Begin by contacting your local SCORE office to get advice on what is involved in starting a new pharmacy in your local area. Find a good location that will get lots of traffic. Write a business plan and secure financing. Establish accounts with drug wholesalers. Decide if your pharmacy will stock other items besides drugs, such as greeting cards and health and beauty products. Hire staff to help you run the store. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit and boundless energy and ideas, starting your independent pharmacy from scratch could be a terrific option.

4. Start a Community Pharmacy Coop. This is when a few pharmacists join together to open an independent pharmacy. This is ideal for many pharmacists, since they can divide the workload amongst themselves and not have to work as many hours, while still being business owners.

Health Properties Of Curry Powder

Curry Powder

Curry powder is a mixture of spices widely used in Indian cuisine. One of the main ingredients used in curry powder is turmeric---also known as curcumin. Recent research has proven turmeric as a powerful anti-inflammatory with many positive health benefits.

Adding more curry powder to your meals, drinking turmeric tea, or taking supplement turmeric capsules are ways you can boost your intake of this healthy spice.

Possible Alzheimer's Disease Prevention

According to USA Today, Alzheimer's disease is four times more prevalent in the United States than it is in India, where curry powder is a dietary staple. Although more research is needed, promising results have emerged from studies on mice and human brain cells. One study showed that curcumin assists in ridding the human brain of the plaque that is responsible for confusion and memory loss linked to Alzheimer's disease. The Linus Paling Institute cites cases where mice fed curcumin exhibited less inflammation and oxidation (markers of Alzheimer's disease) in their brain.

Arthritis Relief

With over 24 anti-inflammatory compounds, the curcumin in curry powder can greatly reduce the pain and swelling accompanied by people suffering with arthritis. USA Today noted one study that showed curcumin prevented rats from developing rheumatoid arthritis, and halted joint damage in rats that had already developed arthritis.

Aids in Healthy Aging

Glutathione, an antioxidant that protects cells from stress, is increased when curcumin is introduced. According to research at the University of California at San Diego, glutathione has been shown to have a direct effect on aging and is linked to a longer lifespan. Conversely, low levels of glutathione are associated with aging eye problems like glaucoma and cataracts.

Possible Cancer Fighting Properties

James A. Duke, Phd., who recently summarized over 700 clinical studies dealing with turmeric's health effects, found that in most cases the spice performed as effectively as pharmaceuticals in treating and preventing various cancers in animals. Whether or not these effects can translate to humans remains to be seen.

Survive A Chemical Stress Test

Today physicians sometimes use a chemical stress test as a substitute for the treadmill test. This chemical procedure is most often used for individuals who cannot walk the treadmill. Like any medical procedure, the chemical stress test has its disadvantages, some of which are severe. The following steps show survive the procedure.

Instructions

1. Inform yourself about what the test entails. If at all possible, request that your physician or the technician who will complete the test explain the procedure to you in detail. Not knowing what is about to happen to you can cause you to panic once the procedure begins.

2. Get a good night's sleep the day before your test. The procedure is somewhat exhausting and will take some strength that you might not have if you aren't prepared.

3. Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before your test. The chemicals used during the procedure will likely make your stomach upset and could cause vomiting if there is undigested food involved.

4. Make yourself familiar with the individual who is going to conduct the test. If possible, meet with her ahead of time to make certain that you feel comfortable putting your life into her hands.

5. Before the test begins, inform your physician or technician of any existing medical conditions, particularly those that relate to the lungs (like asthma). The chemical stress test can put undue stress on various organs of the body, so the technician or physician needs to have any counteracting agents prepared and ready should they be needed during the test.

6. Don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you need to be comfortable with what is about to happen. Should your physician or technician decline to answer your questions, then you might want to reschedule with someone who will.

7. Help your physician or technician decide the best place to put the IV that will be needed during the test. If you know certain veins that don't hold up under IV or if you are aware of ones that usually work, share that information with your test giver.

8. Relax as much as possible while the test is being set up. If you can, meditate and prepare yourself to remain calm and lucid throughout the procedure.

9. Stay calm as the chemicals are injected into the IV. You will experience a hot flash or warmth as the material works its way through your veins. The process will be less stressful if you can remain calm and relaxed.

10. Remain relaxed as the veins are forced open by the chemical and the blood pulsates through the veins. Your head may ache severely, but that will likely cease once the chemical has worked its way through the bloodstream. Your stomach may feel like you need to throw up. However, in almost every instance, the feeling will pass within seconds. Your entire body will feel hot, and you may sweat. However, once again, these feelings will pass once the test is complete.

11. Raise your legs up to your stomach and move them up and down during the procedure. For some reason, this seems to help lessen the procedure's various symptoms.

12. Immediately report anything out of the ordinary from what you were told you would experience during the procedure to the technician or physician. Pay particular attention to any problems in breathing.

13. Demand an end to the test if the symptoms become unbearable. However, keep in mind that doing so will likely result in having to repeat the test or doing the standard treadmill stress test again in the future.

Dilute Your Lavender Essential Oil

Using lavender essential oil can have a calming effect.

Lavender essential oil is extracted from lavender plants and is commonly used in a variety of heath and beauty products. Lavender essential oil has antiseptic and anti-fungal properties and, unlike some of the other essential oils, can be used undiluted because it doesn't usually cause skin irritation. Lavender essential oil has been used to provide relief for asthma symptoms, psoriasis, eczema, acne and to soothe cuts, bruises and sore muscles. Because it has a calming scent, it can also be used as a sleep aid. Although lavender essential oil doesn't require diluting, it is easily diluted with water, or your favorite oils, lotions and creams.

Instructions

1. Pour the carrier oil into a dark glass bottle until it's almost full. Add the lavender essential oil. For an 8 oz. bottle, start with 1 tsp. and then work up to 2 tbsp., if desired. This mixture can be used as a massage oil, a body moisturizer, and it can be added to your bath. For use in the bath, add the oil (1 oz.) while the water is running so that it mixes well.

2. Fill your spray bottle with water. For an 8 oz. bottle add 5 to 10 drops of lavender essential oil. This mixture can be used as a room freshener, on your bedding, or anywhere you want to have the scent of lavender.

3. Add 2 cups of boiling water to the bowl and then add 5 to 10 drops of lavender essential oil. Lean in until your nose is 12 inches from the bowl and inhale. Using steam with lavender essential oil may help reduce the discomfort of colds and asthma.

Acupuncture For Prostate Problems

Prostate problems are common in adult American males and can range from irritating and inconvenient to life threatening if left untreated. Acupuncture is an ancient form of medical treatment that can be effective in relieving the symptoms relating to a range of prostate problems, such as acute or chronic prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia or neurogenic bladder.

Prostatitis and Inflammation

Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine treatment is effective at relieving inflammatory ailments. Since most prostate symptoms develop from an enlarged or inflamed prostate gland, acupuncture can be helpful in treating these disorders.

That said, patients with cancerous prostate conditions should certainly consult with their western physician as well to discuss more aggressive options including radiation or surgery. Acupuncture can be a supplement to prostate cancer treatment.

What is Acupuncture?

An acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of needles into specific points along a system of meridians in the body designed to stimulate the flow of Qi (pronounced "chee") or vital energy. It is through the free flow of this energy along these pathways that the inflammation and swelling are relieved and reduced.

Diagnosis

In TCM, prostatitis is caused by a blockage of Qi in what is known as the kidney channel. Areas of inflammation or "damp heat" where your vital energy does not flow freely and pools, can cause swelling and a variety of uncomfortable symptoms such as frequent or urgent urination.

Left undiagnosed or untreated, a condition of an enlarged prostate has been shown to sometimes develop into prostate cancer.

Treatment

An acupuncturist will spend considerable time looking at the big picture with any diagnosis. Some conditions are caused by physical or mechanical issues, whereas some symptoms can manifest from physical or emotional stresses.

This makes communication of paramount importance with you and your acupuncturist. Some questions from your practitioner may seem unusual or even a bit psychological in background to someone expecting more of a typical physician consultation. It is important for your acupuncturist to have a full, honest picture of what is troubling you in order to design an effective treatment.

A typical acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of sterile, stainless steel needles into a selection of points to stimulate Qi flow. The needles are left in place for about 20 to 30 minutes or more while the patient lies quietly. Many patients actually fall asleep during treatment, a clear illustration of the stress-relieving aspect of acupuncture.

Duration

Some patients will see improvement in just one treatment. Other patients, particularly patients who have had a longstanding injury or have gone a significant time without treatment may take several treatments before seeing significant improvement.

History

The documented art of acupuncture dates back more than 2,500 years, making it the oldest professional medicine practiced in the world. About one quarter of the world's population is treated with acupuncture.

What Does An Iud Look Like

An IUD, or Intrauterine Device, is a device used for long term birth control. Although IUDs earned a bad reputation in the 1970s, the IUDs of today are small, safe and very effective. In the United States, there are two different IUDs available, which work in a similar way, but with slight differences that may affect which the patient chooses.

How IUDs Work

Both types of IUDs prevent pregnancy by preventing the fertilization of the egg by killing or damaging the sperm before it has a chance to reach the egg. The T-shape also disrupts the lining of the uterus making it unlikely a fertilized egg could implant or grow.

Levonorgestrel IUD

The Levonorgestrel IUD, commonly known as the Mirena, is a small T-shaped plastic device that constantly releases low levels of a form of progestin (a hormone) known as levonorgestrel. The hormone released makes the mucus in the cervix thick and sticky so that sperm cannot get through to the uterus. The hormone also prevents the lining of the uterus from growing, therefore making it an undesirable environment for a fertilized egg. This IUD is effective for up to 5 years.

Copper IUD

The Copper IUD, marketed as the Paragard, is also a small T-shaped plastic device, but this one has copper wrapped around the stem. The copper on the IUD stimulates the fallopian tubes and uterus to secrete a fluid that contains white blood cells, copper ions, prostaglandins and other enzymes. Since copper is toxic to sperm, this IUD makes the entire environment uninviting for sperm who will die before ever finding an egg. This IUD is effective for up to 10 years.

Insertion

For either IUD, the insertion process is the same. It must be done by a doctor in the office and can be done in just a few minutes. The IUD is inserted using a sheath, similar to a tampon applicator. In the sheath the IUD is in a straight line. This sheath is inserted through the cervix; the IUD is then pushed through the sheath into place in the uterus, and the arms pop up forming the T-shape. The sheath is then removed.

Who Can Use and IUD?

An IUD is ideal for any woman that wishes to prevent pregnancy long term. Women who have already had at least one child are the best candidates, as those who have not had children have a higher incidence of the IUD being expelled soon after insertion. The IUD does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, so it is preferred that the woman is in a committed relationship. Before opting for an IUD, check with your doctor to discuss any issues or complications that could arise.

Advantages

An IUD is a very effective method of birth control. It is easy to use and does not require any daily or even monthly maintenance. Even though the insertion must be paid for, it is cost effective since it lasts for either 5 or 10 years. An IUD can also help with cramping and heavy menstrual flow and even lower the risk of ectopic pregnancy (an advantage of only the Mirena IUD). When the woman decides she is ready to have a baby, the IUD can be removed and there is no recovery time before she can start trying to become pregnant. This small T-shaped piece of plastic is a great alternative for many women looking for effective birth control.

Do Weight Watchers As A Vegetarian

Do Weight Watchers as a Vegetarian

Weight Watchers is a vegetarian-friendly eating plan. You are given a set amount of points per day depending on your current weight. You must stay within those points, although you have the freedom to eat what you prefer. The higher the fiber and the lower the fat and calories, the fewer points the food accumulates. Nearly all vegetables have 0 points. Pasta, bread, potatoes and cheese have higher point values.

Instructions

1. Eat fruit, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. The key is to eat balanced meals.

2. Substitute plenty of protein. Vegetarians' diets often lack in protein that's usually found in meat. So, you should eat beans, veggie burgers, tofu, peanut butter, spinach and nuts to get the essential nutrient.

3. Plan your day or week in advance and shop with those menus in mind. This will help you stay on track and avoid grabbing unhealthy food.

4. Leave some points unused, in case of splurges that you didn't plan on. There are also 35 FlexPoints available each week for those special occasions. You will still lose weight if you use these extra points, but you'll lose faster if you don't.

5. Use Weight Watchers recipes to get inspired. You can easily fall into a rut, whether you're on Weight Watchers or any other eating plan. Look online for recipes to spice things up.

6. Buy a cookbook. Weight Watchers has a book called Versatile Vegetarian that's chock full of recipes.

7. Join a community board for support. You can find other vegetarians on the Weight Watchers forums. Get tips and swap recipes.

Fifteen Hundred Calorie Diet

There are many reasons why someone would want to eat a 1500 calorie a day diet. There are also many different sample diet plans available. There are a few key components to the 1500 calorie diet. Meals are kept healthy and low-in-fat and most of the fluid intake is water, but some tea is allowed.

Sticking to 1500 Calories a Day

This can be difficult for some people, but the best course of action is to eat about 400 calories per meal and eat two 150 calorie snacks throughout the day or three 100 calorie snacks. Eating a third snack just before bedtime can be extremely beneficial to your weight loss because a lot of people who are dieting are used to eating more calories throughout the day and find this time of day particularly difficult to avoid eating. If you save a snack for the final part of your day, it may help settle your stomach before bed. Otherwise, try to avoid eating the last couple of hours you are awake. If you must, make the snack on the lighter side.

Example Menu

It can be difficult to put together a 1500 calorie menu. Here are some examples and ideas for what to choose on a daily basis. For breakfast, eat a small bowl of cereal with skim milk for about 350 calories. You can also drink unsweetened fruit juice to go with your breakfast.

Have a banana for 107 calories and strawberry yogurt for 120 calories mid-morning (or have each one two different times throughout the morning in between breakfast and lunch).

Avoid eating lunch all together and concentrate on eating snacks throughout the day, if necessary. Otherwise, choose a smart lunch and omit some of the snacking throughout the day.

For dinner, eat a large meal of 850 calories (try beef chow mein or something similar). In the evening, have a kiwi fruit for a snack.

There are many choices you can make. You can eat three medium sized meals throughout the day and eat smaller snacks in between, or you can skip lunch and eat snacks in between breakfast and dinner. It just depends on what works best for you and fills your needs.

Other Tips

It's important to drink plenty of water throughout the day (at least six to eight glasses). You'll need the water to stay energized and to allow your joints and muscles to stay lubricated. Get plenty of exercise. If you don't have enough time to exercise all at once, you can split it up between three or four exercise routines throughout the day. For example, you can walk for 10 to 15 minutes three to four times a day and it will be just as effective as walking for 30 to 40 minutes straight.

Be A Down To Earth Person

In today's society with everyone trying to be accepted by others, you find that people are not always genuine people. Instead they become people pleasing pretenders. Yet, in their hearts, they really prefer to have the guts to just be who they really are and not care at all about the people who refuse to accept them for who they really are. There are a few things that can be done to help people to simply be themselves and become the down to earth real genuine person that they really desire to be.

Instructions

1. Practice being true to yourself. Evaluate who you really are and determine what you really like and/or dislike.

2. Love yourself. Like yourself. If you're a conservative person, then that's who you really are. It's not a good idea to try to be like someone else. You'll lose your "real" self in the midst of trying to fit into your life and style what really works for someone else which will ultimately result in your becoming an unhappy person.

3. Practice honesty and integrity with others. This is an important part of being a down to earth person. In cases where you do not or can not fulfill a request, be real and honest about it. People respect those who are honest and sincere in situations. They know that this type of person in general can be trusted.

4. Practice being a humble person. Modest people are generally well liked people. No one really likes a braggadocios person. People can be confident without bragging and making others feel less worthy.

5. Care for others and be concerned about others. In caring for others, discover ways in which you can help others. Down to earth people are not only concerned about themselves, but care about others as well.

6. Realize that establishing and maintaining true and trusting relationships with people are far more important than obtaining fame, prestige, fortune or material things.

7. Choose your friends and company wisely. Spend time with others who are genuine, honest and down to earth. This will influence and help you to become the down to earth person you desire to be.

Avoid Sea Lice

Sea lice may be the most common stinging creature encountered by swimmers at warm ocean beaches. The name sea lice is a bit of a misnomer since these rash causing creatures are really the larvae of jellyfish. Nearly invisible in the water, sea lice can cause blisters, welts and rashes, often under bathing suits.

Instructions

1. Learn when sea lice are typically present in the area that you'll be swimming. Sea lice are generally only present during certain months of the year, depending on the location, so finding out when the sea lice season is can help you avoid them during peak times. In the Caribbean, for example, sea lice season runs from March to August, with the peak times during April to July.

2. Wear a wetsuit to prevent sea lice from becoming trapped in your bathing suit. Most stings happen when the sea lice become trapped between the swimsuit and skin, so wearing a wetsuit prevents the sea lice from coming into contact with your skin.

3. Swim with as little on as possible. If you can't wear a wetsuit, your best bet to avoid sea lice stings is to swim naked or wear as little as possible in the water. Most stings happen under swimsuits so eliminating as much suit area as you can helps prevent stings.

4. Talk to locals, hotel staff and other vacationers if you're in an area that you are unfamiliar with and want to avoid sea lice. Locals and hotel staff will often know if sea lice are present and if there are places where you can swim without encountering too many.

5. Try using a product that repels sea lice. Products like Safe Sea are said to protect you from sea lice stings. Anecdotal evidence suggests that suntan lotion applied before swimming may also help you avoid sea lice stings.

6. Stay out of the ocean if you know that sea lice are present. The easiest and most effective method of avoiding sea lice, particularly if you know that you're sensitive, is to stay out of the water.

Side Effects Of Thuja Oil

Side Effects of Thuja Oil

Thuja, also known as eastern white cedar or yellow cedar, is an evergreen in the cypress family. In Europe it is also grown as an ornamental plant. Its branches and leaves contain an oil called thujone, used in herbal remedies. Some claim that thuja oil helps with side effects from chemotherapy and radiation. Herbalists sometimes prescribe thuja oil to treat viral and bacterial infections.

Thujone Effects

Thujone, a component of thuja, can cause muscle spasms, seizures, and hallucinations if swallowed. It interferes with the nerve cells on the brain and can also damage the liver and the kidneys if taken in high doses.

Thuja

Thuja can be toxic if taken in large doses. It can cause asthma attacks, intestinal irritation, and miscarriage. There is very little known about thuja, so taking it internally is not recommended by medical professionals.

Essential Oil

The essential oil made from thuja, or thuja oil, can cause spasms if ingested. In high doses damage to the liver and kidneys is possible, as are seizures. If it makes contact with eyes or skin, it can cause burns and irritation.

The Thuja Tree

Contact with the thuja tree can cause side effects on its own. People who work with this tree have reported asthma and rashes. The leaves and branch shoots can also cause poisoning. Actual deaths have been reported as poisoning by the thuja.

What Are The Treatments For Shoulder Subluxation

A shoulder that is unstable refers to a shoulder joint where the ball of the joint is loose within the socket and slides around within the joint, sometimes causing pain and lameness. Shoulder instability generally leads to a shoulder subluxation, or partial dislocation of the shoulder joint. Shoulder subluxations are usually caused by injury, such as car accidents and athletic injuries, or from repeated rotational movements of the arm.

Symptoms of a Shoulder Subluxation

Symptoms of a shoulder subluxation normally include intermittant pain, loss of full mobility of the affected arm, tingling and numbness.

Treatments

People who have not previously experienced a subluxation and are treated relatively quickly after the onset of symptoms may only require a mild sedative and manual replacement of the humerus.

If the subluxation is severe, or is chronically recurring, a surgical intervention is usually the recommended course of action.

Surgery

In a subluxation surgery, several approaches can be taken. The most common is to stabilize the joint by "fixing" the ball of the shoulder into the socket by adding stability in the form of screws and sutures. This treatment is designed to support the joint while physical therapy is used to strengthen the muscles.

After Treatment Care

In each of these cases, the patient will be expected to refrain from using the affected arm and undergo several weeks or months of physical therapy afterward, aimed at strengthening the muscles that surround the joint in an effort to prevent a recurrence.

Prognosis

The success rate of the treatment varies, depending on the severity of the condition, the method for reducing the subluxation, and the medical history of the patient. A manual replacement of the joint has the highest incidence of recurrence, while a surgically repaired joint generally remains stable for a considerable amount of time post surgery.

How Does Bone Cancer Start

Primary Bone Cancer

Primary bone cancer is relatively rare. According to the Mayo Clinic, less than 2,500 new cases of primary bone cancer are diagnosed each year. Of these cases, the majority will be children, largely because this form of cancer occurs in growing bone tissue or cartilage, which is seen in youth more than in adults. Scientists are still unaware how it starts. But, as with any form of cancer, there is something to be said about a person's genetics, meaning that bone cancer may have something to do with heredity. Though rare, some people are more predisposed to develop bone cancer than others.

Secondary Bone Cancer

Characteristically, bone cancer starts as another form of cancer entirely, making it a metastatic cancer, or a cancer that has metastasized and spread to the bone. This is far more common than cancer that starts in the bone. That being said, it isn't technically bone cancer, since it is a cancer of wherever the abnormal cells originated. If someone were to have stomach cancer and it spread to his pelvic bone, it is still stomach cancer, though it may have metastasized to this area of the body, hence the term "metastatic bone cancer."

Bone Marrow Cancer

Bone marrow cancer, which would be seen in leukemia, shouldn't be confused with bone cancer. Much like secondary or metastatic bone cancer, they are two different forms of cancers. Bone marrow cancer affects the marrow or core of the bone, where your blood vessels come from. Bone cancer affects the skeleton. As with any cancer, bone marrow cancer will start off with an abnormal cell that multiplies at a higher rate than healthy cells. This doesn't mean that someone with cancer of the bone marrow will never have cancer of the bone; it simply means they are different diseases.

Symptoms

When someone is suffering from bone cancer, he will more than likely experience some level of pain around the tumor. He may suffer from tenderness and swelling, breaks and fractures, fatigue and weight loss. People who have cancer of the bone will generally find that it has formed on either the bones of the arms or the bones of the legs, but can affect any bone in the body.

Reduce Long Term Effects Of Measles

Although measles was once a common illness it isn't any longer. However, is it a serious illness. Measles is a virus that is most often contracted by children. If a child gets measles, he faces the possibly of long term effects.

Instructions

1. Get vaccinated. Receiving the measles vaccination is the best way to reduce any log term effects that come from the illness. Getting the vaccination will prevent the illness overall, and thus, reduce the effects.

2. See a doctor immediately. If you suspect that you or your children have contracted measles, go to your doctor immediately. Catching measles early will help to reduce any of the effects of the virus.

3. Use antiviral drugs. While this type of medication is often only available through hospitals, taking antiviral medicine can help to fight measles and reduce any effects of the virus.

4. Get plenty of rest. When your body is infected with measles, one of the important ways to get rid of the virus is to repair your body through sleep. Getting plenty of rest with help your body to fight off the virus and reduce the long term effects.

5. Treat the symptoms. By treating the pain and fever that is caused by measles, you will be able to treat the virus as well. Take pain relievers and fever reducers to help eliminate the measles.

Inverter Health Risks

Inverters are designed to relieve lower back pain and pressure.

Inverters, also known as inversion tables, are devices designed to allow you to relieve intervertebral disk compression, particularly in the lower back, by tipping upside down to stretch the spine with the aim of reducing or eliminating back pain. To achieve this, patients are strapped securely to the table and may "invert" at different angles, from as little as 8 inches to entirely vertical.

Heart Disease

Once you have been inverted for just a couple of minutes, your heart rate begins to slow down while your blood pressure elevates. Due to these side effects, people diagnosed with heart disease should avoid inverter therapy.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a sight-dimming disease of the eye due to increased ocular pressure. The closer the inversion level gets to full vertical head-down position, the greater the buildup of pressure behind the eye. This can be very painful and disconcerting for inverted patients.

Spinal Injury

While inverters are designed to relieve back pain, inversion therapy can actually exacerbate any preexisting trauma or injury if not approved and supervised by a licensed physician.

Hypertension

The body's systems and functions are not immune to the forces of gravity. By forcing the heart to pump harder to distribute oxygen-rich blood to the body's extremities due to an inverter treatment, people can develop or suffer the effects of preexisting high blood pressure.

Retinal Detachment

In rare instances, inversion therapy can cause the optic nerve to detach from the retina. If the retina doesn't reattach itself over time, surgery is the only option to repair this damage.

Pregnancy

Despite the temptation to use an inverter to relieve back pain often associated with pregnancy, physicians caution that pregnant women should never use an inversion table.

Use Hands On Energy Healing Techniques

Use Hands On Energy Healing Techniques

Energy is created by subatomic particles, which vibrate in patterns of energy, or matter. Hands-on healing balances the subtle energies of the body, the chakras and the aura in "blocked" areas where energy has slowed or stopped moving. The ability to use hands-on healing grows with practice and intention, but anyone can do it.

Instructions

1. Assess the body's energy to determine where there might be blockages. With the patient laying comfortably face-down, place your left hand at the base of their neck and your right hand just above their hips. Center your palm on the spine and meditate the body's energy. Use your left hand, which draws energy in, to interpret the energy and right hand, which pushes energy, to concentrate your intention to heal. You should sense, intuitively and physically, a tightening or pulling sensation on certain parts of your body or the client's body during the assessment, indicating the energetic areas that need work.

2. Envision the person as an energetic being with three distinct yet interwoven parts: the mind, spirit and body. Determine which part needs healing. Energy healers recognize that while the symptoms of an illness manifests in one of these parts, the root of the problem is often an energy block within another part. For instance, a person who has suffered great emotional trauma may have energy blocks in the abdominal area causing digestive disorders or infertility. Let intuition be your strongest guide, as logic plays only a small part in energy healing and often obscures the real source of the problem.

3. Begin the hands-on healing session once you feel you have received a full energetic assessment. Remember that energy flows into your left hand and out of your right and should be focused towards the patient's feet, or towards the earth. Place your hands lightly on the body where you feel energy needs to be opened. Envision bright white light flowing through your hands and cleaning out the blocked area. When you feel static, or a slight itching in your hands, brush the energy off the patient. Work towards the ground and shake your own hands, sending the energy towards the floor.

4. Work in each area until you feel the energy flowing smoothly and easily. Patients often complain of lightheadedness after an energy healing session, so end with a foot massage. A foot massage restores energy and grounds the patient with the earth.

The Uses Of Kyanite In Clay Bodies

The high thermal and electrical resistance of kyanite makes it useful for porcelain used with spark plugs.

Kyanite is a mineral that has many industrial uses, such as the molding and formation of products that must withstand high temperatures. It is also added to the clay bodies of different clays and porcelains because it has unusual thermal and structural properties that can enhance the strength and change the shrinkage of fired clay. While kyanite is typically used in industrial settings, it can also be used for sculpture and small-scale productions of clay items.

Kyanite

Kyanite is a mineral composed of aluminum, silicon and oxygen. There are two other minerals with the same chemical composition as kyanite: andalusite and sillimanite. Kyanite forms at much higher pressures than andalusite and sillimanite and is often found in sedimentary rocks that contain clay. It is unusual in that it kyanite has different hardnesses, depending upon what part of the crystal is tested. It also expands when exposed to heat, unlike most other minerals. Kyanite is typically used for the formation of products which must withstand high heat, and is also used as an abrasive.

Green Clay

Kyanite has an unusual, needle-like grain and fibrous structure. When added to a clay body, these grains interlock with one another, forming a mesh or matrix. This matrix adds a significant amount of strength and durability to the clay body. With unfired clay, this matrix structure helps the clay maintain its form, which is helpful when making a large structure.

Fired Clay

Kyanite prevents cracking and warping during the firing process and increases the temperature at which an item can be fired. The same needle-like structures that maintain strength before firing also maintain strength during and after the firing process. This helps the finished product resist breaking afterwards and makes it more durable. At high temperatures, kyanite converts to mullite, which is an even stronger material.

Expansion

Clays shrink when fired, some significantly. This can be a problem, and it can be difficult to determine how large a piece should be at production in order to be the correct size once fired. Kyanite, unlike most other minerals, expands by about 2 percent when heated. This expansion helps maintain the volume of the clay object and effectively prevents significant shrinking in any type of clay. The predictability of kyanite expansion is also helpful when calculating the size of the initial item.

Best Ear Wax Removal Products

There are a wide variety of commercial products marketed for removing earwax. Some of these products are effective, some are a waste of money but harmless, and a few are potentially dangerous and should be avoided.

Significance

Earwax is a naturally forming substance in the human ear. Its function is similar to that of the hairs in the nose. It catches foreign particles and prevents them from building up in the ear and causing possible damage. In most cases, it eventually oozes out of the ear, thus removing the foreign particles. However, earwax is denser in some individuals and has more of a tendency to build up rapidly. Excessive buildup does not typically cause any permanent damage to the ear, but If allowed to build up too much, it can occlude the ear canal, resulting in discomfort and temporary loss of hearing. Individuals who have a tendency toward earwax buildup can prevent this from happening by removing the wax regularly.

Types

There are two types of commonly recommended products for removing earwax. One type of product is a liquid compound called carbamide peroxide that dissolves earwax when dripped into the ear. It is marketed under a number of brand names, but look for the active ingredient, carbamide peroxide.

The other method is to use a mechanical device to physically remove the wax from the ear. Extreme caution is recommended in regard to this type of product. However, there are some that are relatively safe to use, even on yourself. The most notable of these is the Ototek Loop, which is an elongated plastic tool with a loop in the end and a special plastic guard that prevents it from being inserted too far into the ear.

Prevention/Solution

To remove earwax using carbamide peroxide solution, purchase the product along with a rubber syringe. Place several drops in the affected ear with the head tilted in such a way that the liquid will flow deep into the ear canal. Insert a piece of cotton in the ear so that the liquid will not leak out, and leave it there for 20 to 30 minutes. After the time has elapsed, remove the cotton and flush the ear with warm water using the rubber syringe.

A tool such as the Ototek Loop can be used to remove impacted earwax by carefully inserting it into the ear to one side and swiping to the other side before pulling it out. The loop will catch hold of any wax in its path, allowing the user to pull it out. These two methods may be used together; however, be aware that seriously impacted earwax may have to be removed by a doctor.

Misconceptions

A common home remedy known as "ear candling" is useless and should be avoided. Advocates of this process claim that special candles can be used to suck earwax out of the ear canal. As evidence, they will demonstrate that the candle becomes discolored once the process is complete. However, studies have shown that the used candles contain little or no earwax. Moreover, the candles will become discolored when burned, even when not inserted into someone's ear. The practice is a hoax, and there is also a small danger that hot wax could be accidentally dripped into the ear, creating an more serious problem.

Warning

No tool or small object should ever be inserted into the ear canal unless it is specifically designed in such a way so as to prevent it from being inserted too far into the ear. The ear drum is very delicate and can easily be punctured. If earwax cannot be easily removed, always consult a doctor. Medical professionals have equipment specially designed for this purpose and can remove the wax without causing harm to the eardrum.

Chiropractic Treatment Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Chiropractic Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition marked by a tingling or numbness sensation in the area of the wrist and hand. It is found in people who perform repetitive daily tasks with the fingers or hands, such as computer operators, cashiers or assembly line workers. The problem is sparked along the median nerve which runs from the fingertips, up the arm, through the shoulder and neck, and all the way to the spinal cord. Because the spinal cord and upper back area has this connection to the hand and wrist area, a chiropractor may be able to alleviate the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Convenience

Successful chiropractic procedures may eliminate the need to take the surgery or medical drug route. In the end, this could save the patient time, money and further pain.

Through bones in the back of the lower neck, the median nerve that is responsible for causing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is connected to the spinal cord. If any of these particular bones change position or lose normal movement, the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel can be felt all the way down to the wrist and fingers. A chiropractor can analyze the neck area and make slight adjustments to the bones to lessen any unwanted pressure on, or damage to, the median nerve. Since the nerve travels along the arm and shoulders, a chiropractor may recognize the need to adjust these areas as well.

Therapies

A chiropractor may use therapy techniques such as ice, ultrasound, electrical stimulation or low level laser therapy to treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. These techniques work by reducing inflammation around the nerve area. Cold laser therapy is a procedure that has been approved by the FDA as a proper treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Nutritional Supplements

A chiropractor may suggest taking some nutritional supplements, such as colloidal minerals, to aid in relieving the effects of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Some chiropractors believe in the importance of absorbing minerals into the body in order to make up for nutrients that the body is lacking to maintain good health. Colloidal minerals are extremely absorbent and are taken in a liquid form.

Wrist Traction

A chiropractor sometimes uses a high-tech unit that creates traction in order help heal Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The patient's arm is attached to a machine that pulls at regular intervals to help relieve pressure at the wrist.

Other Suggestions

A chiropractor can also suggest and explain the need for some other ways to deal with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. There are a series of hand and wrist exercises (such as Cats Paw exercises) that a chiropractor can teach the patient to perform daily to keep the hand muscles stretched and strengthened. A chiropractor may also advise the use of arm splints to allow the median nerve and wrist area to heal by not bending or creating undue stress upon the area.

Cope With Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a condition involving the gradual destruction of spine and neck cartilage. As you get older, your body weakens due to decreasing levels of water and protein in the cartilage. The destruction of those joints leads to DDD and increases your risk of back and neck injury. Learn get treated for degenerative disc disease before it's too late.

Instructions

1. Schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible if you have back pain that doesn't go away. Ignoring your back pain only makes it worse and costs you in the long run. Your doctor can diagnose the extent of your back pain through an MRI, x-ray test or CT scan of your spine. Talk to your doctor about what can be done to help you if you have degenerative disc disease.

2. Take doctor-prescribed medication in the recommended doses. Doctors suggest taking over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen if your DDD symptoms are minor. If your symptoms worsen, your doctor may prescribe something stronger such as ketoprofen, orudis or chymodiactin. Check with your doctor before increasing your medication dosage if the pain increases.

3. Rest your body to avoid the risk of straining the injured area and causing your symptoms to flare up further. Doctors recommend using either ice packs or heating pads to relieve your DDD symptoms. Use a firm mattress to lie comfortably on to take pressure off your spine. Return to daily activities slowly to prevent any more strain on your spine.

4. Begin a 6-week physical therapy program to help relieve DDD symptoms and reduce the risk of any further strain. Most therapy programs focus on stretching exercises and proper walking techniques. Also find a chiropractor to help repair any current injuries. Chiropractors apply pressure to the injured area to help restore motion to the spine. If neither method helps you, call your doctor.

5. Consult with a surgeon who specializes in back and spinal injuries. Surgeons recommend two possible treatments for you to consider: intradiscal electrothermal therapy and interbody fusion. In intradiscal electrothermal therapy, your surgeon inserts a catheter to give heat directly to the injured area and relieve your symptoms. Interbody fusion is a procedure that joins one or more vertabrae to give the spine some stability. Decide carefully before choosing any surgical procedure. Think about which treatment is more effective before selecting it. Schedule your surgery and set aside some time to recover.
