Natural Remedies For Lymph Node Cancer

Lymph node cancer involves the lymphatic system, which is an integral part of your body's immune system. Lymphomas are cancers that often start in the spleen or lymph nodes. If this type of cancer gets into the blood stream, it can spread to almost any area of the body. If detected early, lymph node cancer is a curable condition. Natural remedies are most effective in combination with traditional treatments, but you should consult a doctor before beginning any treatment.

Green Tea & Parsley

Green tea has anti-cancer properties and can reduce the growth of tumors and cause the death of cancer cells. A component in green tea, called EGCG, helps kill cancer cells by cutting off the communication signals needed for survival. Parsley contains ingredients that shut down enzymes called Epithelial Growth Factors, which stimulate the growth of cancer.

Red & Echinacea Root

Red root is a natural remedy used to treat lymph node cancer. Red root stimulates lymph and inter-tissue fluid, which causes lymphatic drainage. This is effective in treating enlarged lymph nodes and shrinks non-fibrous cysts. Echinacea root is responsible for boosting the immune system and stimulating lymphatic activity within your body.

Cleavers & Fogwart

Cleavers are a tonic for the lymphatic system, used to treat swollen glands and cancerous cells in the body. This treatment works by detoxifying the tissues and draining the lymphatic system through the urinary tract. Fogwort is an herb that has shown healing powers within the lymphatic system.

What Is The Dan Protocol

DAN stands for "Defeat Autism Now," a leading research group based at the Autism Research Institute in San Diego. The DAN Protocol is methodology that aims to produce changes in the behavior of autistic children by altering their diets.

Autism

Autism is a development disorder that usually becomes apparent before the age of 3 and is characterized by limited communication and social skills. The elimination of refined sugars, artificial additives and other dietary components has proved to have beneficial health effects in autistic children, according to the Autistic Society.

Dairy Products

The DAN Protocol advocates removing of dairy products --- which contain the milk protein casein --- from the diet. The protocol suggests using rice or soy milk as substitutes for cow's milk.

Cereal Grain Products

Cereal grain products contain a gluey protein called gluten that is known to aggravate the digestive system of autistic children. The DAN Protocol advocates eliminating cereal grain products from the diet and replacing them with rice or other products, including vitamins and mineral supplements.

Body Cleansing And Detoxification

Today's world is full of toxins. The foods we eat, and sometimes the water we drink, can contain them. At times, the very air we breathe can be toxic. Some people swear by a total body cleanse to detoxify your body and ensure good health.

Ways to Cleanse

Many products claim they cleanse all toxins out of the body and drastically improve your health. However, detox can be done naturally without spending a ton of money on various gimmicks.

The most popular way to detox your body is to begin with a diet that consists mainly of fresh and raw fruits and vegetables. Omitting all processed and cooked foods helps cleanse your whole digestive system. By effectively removing all waste material from the body with more frequent bowel movements, you remove toxins that may be trapped due to your body not eliminating as it should.

Bentonite clay works by soaking up water and turning into a gel, which holds the toxins in order to eliminate them from your body. Add 1 tbsp. of ground flax seed and 1 tbsp. of liquid bentonite to a glass of water in the morning. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating after you drink this. Drink plenty of water during the day to prevent constipation and dehydration (see Reference 1).

Probiotics are good bacteria that help remove chlorine and other toxins from the gastrointestinal tract. They also enhance the immune system, improve digestion and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Look for probiotics that have a enteric coating, a layer protecting the bacteria to ensure it makes it to the digestive system where it is most needed.

Side Effects

Some of the side effects of body cleansing include muscle breakdown, vitamin deficiencies, and problems with blood sugar levels. It can also cause problems with potassium and sodium levels in the body. The immune system can also be compromised, leaving a person more prone to colds and infections than usual. Another unpleasant side effect is more frequent and liquid bowel movements. Pregnant women should not use a body cleansing program. People suffering from diabetes or heart and kidney disease should also avoid them (see Reference 2).

Remove Toxins From The Body

Your body begins slowing down and your organs become less effective when your body is bogged down by toxins. You need to eliminate these toxins so your body can function as it should.

Instructions

1. Drink a lot of water to flush your body of toxins. You should be drinking at least 1 gallon or more of water daily. You can also have caffeine-free herbal teas to flush your body.

2. Increase the fiber in your food to make sure you have regular bowel movements. Good foods to eat vegetables and fruit such as bananas. Flaxseed oil in water or lemon juice with water will also serve as a mild natural laxative to clean out your system.

3. Exercise as often as you can to rid your body of toxins. Your body rids toxins from it through your sweat. Try sitting in a sauna, which is also great for sweating out those toxins.

4. Eliminate all foods and drinks that are high in toxins such as refined flour and sugar, fried foods, saturated fats, processed foods, meat with hormones and produce with pesticides, coffee, soda, drugs and alcohol.

5. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. If cooked, prepare the vegetables with very little oil, fat or spices. These foods digest easier and are absorbed into the body faster to rid your body of toxins.

6. Have natural whole grains, rice, beans, herbs and pasta. Eat as many natural, organic products as you can.

Infected Tooth Symptoms

A tooth infection, which is also referred to as a tooth abscess, usually results from an untreated cavity or injury to a tooth or the mouth. If the infected tooth is left untreated, the infection may cause serious complications that can become life-threatening.

Types

People with an infected tooth may notice bleeding from their gums, a puslike discharge, excessive saliva, increased sensitivity when eating and drinking, pain, facial swelling and bad breath or unusual mouth odor.

Time Frame

An infected tooth may cause symptoms for a few days to several weeks or longer if it is left untreated or if the infection spreads to other parts of the body.

Identification

A physician, dentist or oral surgeon may diagnose an infected tooth by conducting an oral exam or taking X-rays of the teeth. A swab of the area may be tested for bacteria.

Significance

An infection in a tooth may cause people to lose that particular tooth, which can lead to problems with eating and talking and may cause the other teeth to move. Infections left untreated may spread into other teeth or the jaw bone and cause further damage.

Considerations

People with a tooth infection who have other medical conditions such as heart disease, immune system disorders, diabetes or who are pregnant may be at a higher risk for developing complications.

Prevention/Solution

Regular visits to a dentist, healthy eating habits and good oral hygiene can help prevent cavities and mouth disorders that can lead to tooth infections.

Recover From Prescription Drug Abuse

Prescription drug abuse is as serious as any other form of drug or substance abuse. Although alcohol and illegal drug abuse are talked about in our society more frequently, the consequences of prescription drug abuse are equally devastating to the abuser and his or her immediate family and friends. The first step to recovering from prescription drug abuse is to consciously recognize that you have a problem. Next, you must be willing to seek the help necessary for your recovery. As with all recovery processes, the road can be long and challenging. The reward of true freedom makes the journey worth it, though. Read on to learn recover from prescription drug abuse.

Instructions

1. Determine whether or not you abuse prescription drugs. As with many other addictions and cases of substance abuse, you may try to convince yourself that you do not have a problem. The key to determining whether or not your circumstances constitute “abuse” is to compare the prescribed amount(s) and frequency of your prescription drugs(s) with the amount(s) and frequency you actually engage on a regular basis. Essentially, if you take any more of a prescription drug than your doctor has advised you, you are abusing that drug. For example, if your doctor advises you to take 25 mg of a prescription once a day, but you take 50 mg every day, that constitutes abuse. Also, obtaining and taking a prescription drug that you do not personally have a prescription is clearly abusive behavior.

2. Consider the consequences of your prescription drug abuse. You may feel guilty when you take more of a medication than prescribed. Many people go to great lengths and efforts to obtain more amounts of a prescription drug. The time spent feeling guilty and visiting doctors is lost time. Moreover, prescription drugs cost money, whether out of pocket or through a deductible amount. Also, taking a drug in amounts higher than at which it was prescribed, or more often that it was prescribed can cause serious health problems.

3. Identify the benefits that will result from you beginning a prescription drug abuse recovery program. Once you recover, you will be free from guilt. You can then use that energy to engage in activities that make you feel positive feelings, like pride and happiness. Less doctors visits means more money in your pocket and time to spend otherwise. Also, when you stop abusing prescription drugs, you do not have to worry about more health problems beyond what you may have already created.

Prevent Reactive Arthritis

Reactive Arthritis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the joints, typically in the lower extremities, eye and skin infections or inflammation. It is triggered by the presence of a bacterial infection elsewhere in the body. This precipitating infection may be connected to a sexually transmitted disease, but can also be from salmonella or other bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract. Little can be done to prevent the onset of reactive arthritis, other than to practice proper hygiene and sanitation to avoid bacterial infections.

Instructions

1. Avoid eating any foods that you suspect may be contaminated with bacteria. During the summer months this requires careful monitoring of all foods that may be stored at room temperature. Caution should be exercised with any food that contain mayonnaise and meats should always be refrigerated.

2. Resist the urge to leave frozen foods on the counter to thaw. Plan ahead so that you will have plenty of time to thaw them in the refrigerator.

3. Remove any uneaten food from a cookout and refrigerate immediately after serving. The few minutes it takes to reheat leftovers from the grill is worth the effort and may make the difference between safe and unsafe food.

4. Keep all utensils and serving dishes clean and germ free. Do not use a utensil or serving plate that has been used during food preparation to serve food from the grill. This is especially important of all materials that have come in contact with raw meats. Never reuse the marinade from raw meats. If you wish to add marinade while grilling, use fresh marinade.

5. Clean counters, cutting boards, and prep areas with an antibacterial cleaner. Be sure to use paper towels or other disposable cloth to wipe and clean the area. Sponges are convenient, but are known for harboring bacteria. Use a chlorine bleach and water solution to wash down counters and prep areas on a daily basis to prevent bacteria.

6. Treat any suspected infection as soon as it becomes apparent. Don't wait to see if it will go away. Although it is unclear whether or not the duration of the infection plays a role in triggering reactive arthritis, proper treatment of any infection will improve your health and comfort.

7. Avoid risky sexual behaviors to lower the chances of sexually transmitted infections. Reactive arthritis is not not contagious, but the infections that trigger it can be.

What Could Cause Sharp Pain After Hernia Surgery

Hernias can be caused by genetic deficiencies like weakening of the abdominal wall or by accidental injuries. Twisting, pulling muscles, lifting heavy objects, constipation, weight gain, and a chronic cough can all lead to a hernia. Hernias can usually be treated through surgery with very little likelihood of recurring pain.

Surgery Type

According to the British Journal of Anesthesia, the type of surgery performed on the hernia may actually be the cause of hernia pain afterward.

Painful Scars

It is possible to suffer from a painful scar after hernia surgery. This pain can be treated with injections at the scar site.

Recurring Hernia

A hernia can recur in some patients and cause severe pain. In any case of possible recurrence, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Internal Damage

Intense pain may also follow hernia surgery if there has been damage to other internal organs. While these cases are rare, the National Digestive Disease Clearinghouse states that it is possible for the intestine, bladder, kidneys, nerves, internal female organs and the vas deferens tube to sustain injury during surgery.

Infection

Infection can be another source of sharp pain after hernia surgery. Infection is usually accompanied by fever, discharge, swelling, redness and pain around the incision.

Natural High Blood Pressure Treatments

If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you are not alone. The American Heart Association estimates that about one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. It is likely that your doctor will prescribe medication. However, blood pressure medications, although they are effective and necessary, are not the only way to control high blood pressure. Under your doctor's guidance, you can forge a plan for lowering your high blood pressure based on some natural treatments.

Exercise

Exercise should become your first priority in trying to lower your blood pressure. Exercise strengthens the heart by making it work harder--however, the type of exercise is important. Muscle building exercises are important for building a strong body, but a good aerobic workout for 30 minutes a day is the only type of exercise that will aid in lowering your blood pressure. Your exercise should be regular, and it is important to remember that it takes 30 to 60 days before any effect is usually noticed. Aerobic exercise includes such activities as climbing stairs, mowing the lawn, swimming, walking and any others that elevate the heart rate.

Limit Sodium

While you are increasing your exercise, begin reducing the amount of sodium in your diet. Sodium contributes to weight gain by aiding the body's retention of liquids, which ultimately raises blood pressure and makes the heart work harder than it should. Beside regular table salt, there are many other items that you should avoid or reduce, including canned vegetables and soups, bouillon, meat tenderizer, flavor enhancers, such as monosodium glutamate, soy tamari and steak sauces. Most processed foods contain high levels of sodium, so read labels carefully. And stay away from fast food restaurants where almost every item on the menus is loaded with sodium. United States Department of Agriculture guidelines suggest that a person's daily sodium intake should be under 2300 milligrams per day, but if you are fighting high blood pressure, you should limit sodium intake to under 1800 milligrams per day.

Increase Potassium

In addition to eliminating foods with excess sodium, try to increase your intake of potassium, which can be effective in treating high blood pressure. Foods high in potassium include avocados, bananas, cantaloupe, grapefruit juice, prunes, prune juice and raisins. These foods are also naturally low in sodium.

Reducing Sress

Stress is a contributing factor to high blood pressure, so eliminating stress in your daily life should become a priority. Under stress, epinephrine and norepinephrine are released into the bloodstream, elevating heart rate and increasing blood pressure. Yoga and biofeedback are both accepted ways for relaxing and reducing blood pressure. You might also look into meditation as another method that can be used to control blood pressure and reduce the need for prescription medication.

Consider Supplements

Some natural supplements are considered effective aids in reducing blood pressure. However, it is important to check with your doctor to make sure that these supplements are right for you and will not counteract with any other medication you are currently taking. Ginkgo Biloba, an antioxidant, and garlic are two supplements sometimes used in the control of blood pressure.

Natural Herbal Detox Tea

Cayenne pepper is a common ingredient in detoxification teas

In 1992, the Environmental Protection Agency randomly tested 7,000 Americans for chemicals in their systems. Approximately 71 percent of these had traces of common wood preservative. In light of this study, many doctors who work with chronically fatigued patients say that chemical exposure may contribute to lowered vitality. One of the key concepts of Eastern Medicine is that energy can be restored by removing toxins from the body through a system of regular detoxification.

Significance

Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome include fatigue, loss of memory, sore throat, unexplained joint or muscle pain, headaches, inability to sleep or sleep that is not restful, and exhaustion. While there is no proof that detoxification cures chronic fatigue syndrome, according to the principles of Ayurvedic medicine, detoxification can restore balance to the body's systems.

Detoxification Tea

There are many detoxification diets to choose from. Some, like the popular Master Cleanse, require the person undergoing the cleanse to go on a liquid diet for a minimum of 10 days. Others, like the raw-foods diet, advocate eating only uncooked fruits and vegetables for two to five days. By contrast, proponents of detoxification tea say that it is comparatively easier to undergo, partially because less effort is involved.

Ingredients

Common ingredients in detoxification tea are similar to those in other cleanses such as the Master Cleanse and raw-foods diets. This is because many of these herbs and natural food items are thought to be generally beneficial for cleansing the body's systems. Many of them, such as cayenne pepper and garlic, have been used in homeopathic and holistic medical treatments as well as rural home remedies for hundreds of years. Some common ingredients in herbal teas include organic lemons, garlic and cayenne pepper. To brew a detoxification tea, mix 1 cup of boiling water with 1 tablespoon lemon juice and ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper. This brew should be taken three times a day to cleanse the system. As the blood cleanses, the concoction can be consumed as seldom as once a day.

Seroquel

Seroquel is an anti-psychotic medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by alternating periods of depression and excessively elated mood, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Chemically, Seroquel is known as quetiapine fumarate and is legally available only by prescription.

History

Seroquel is known as an atypical antipsychotic and has been used since 1997 to help manage and stabilize the mood swings associated with bipolar disorder, according to the manufacturer's website. In 2004, it was officially approved by the FDA to treat bipolar illness. As of 2009, Seroquel was not approved for use in people under the age of 18.

How It Works

The exact method in which Seroquel works is not known, according to the manufacturer's website. However, the medical community believes that bipolar disease and other mental illnesses are caused at least in part by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Studies and patient experience have shown that Seroquel helps regulate these chemicals in the brain and reduce depression and manic behavior.

Serious Side Effects

There is a risk of serious side effects with Seroquel. Uncontrollable movements of the face and body can occur with the use of anti-psychotics such as Seroquel, and can lead to a permanent condition known as tardive dyskinesia (TD). Very high fever, muscle rigidity, confusion or shaking can result from using the drug and lead to a possibly fatal condition known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), according to the manufacturer's website.

Common Side Effects

There are several more common side effects reported with the use of Seroquel. Drowsiness, dizziness and dry mouth may result from using Seroquel pills. Increasing intake of fluids such as water and avoiding alcoholic beverages are usually effective ways of reducing or eliminating such side effects.

Cost

As of 2009, Seroquel was available in 25-mg, 50-mg, 100-mg, 200-mg, 300-mg and 400-mg tablets. Dosage depends on the patient and prescribing doctor. Financial assistance programs are available for uninsured patients who meet certain income guidelines. Insurance co-pays depend on the individual health plan. The cost of the drug for uninsured patients paying with cash could range from about $155 for 60 25-mg tablets to about $405 for 30 400-mg pills.

Meanings Of The Color Pink

Pink is for girls... or is it?

The color pink is a combination red and white. The results range from soft pastel tones of baby pink to shockingly bright magenta and fuchsia. Pink decorations and adornments are often used during the months of spring, and for romantic events, such as weddings or Valentine's Day. As a result, people tend to associate the color pink with feelings of happiness and affection.

Gender

In Western cultures, pink is a feminine color. New mothers swaddle baby girls in pink blankets, and fashionable young women dress in pink ensembles; the international emblem for the battle against breast cancer is a piece of pink ribbon. However, it was not always this way. Prior to the 1900s, pink was considered a masculine color, as it was so closely related to red. Blue, on the other hand, was thought to be more delicate and feminine and was, therefore, considered an appropriate color for girls.

Romance

Mixing white with any color results in a pastel version of the original. Pastel hues, such as pink, are less commanding than their original colors. This may be why pure red is associated with passionate love, while pink is thought of as the color of kindness, sweetness, tenderness and caring. The unspoken language of color should be kept in mind when choosing things like flowers; a bouquet of ruby red roses sends an entirely different message than a bouquet of pastel pink ones, though an assortment of hot pink flowers can bridge the gap between these two, as the vivid hue suggests both playfulness and passion.

Psychology

Whether you realize it or not, the colors that surround you have an immediate and profound impact on your disposition, temperament, emotional state, appetite and energy level. The color pink tends to bring on feelings of inner tranquility, peace and relaxation. In fact, it is so effective at neutralizing disorder, it is often used to paint the walls in jail cells and psychiatric wards; the color helps keep erratic individuals calm and under control. In sports, coaches have been known to paint the walls of the visiting team's locker room pink to reduce their aggression, tilting the scales in favor of the home team.

New Age

Those who use crystals for therapeutic reasons choose pink gemstones, such as rose quartz or pink sapphires, to increase feelings of contentment, self-respect and confidence, and to guard against unwarranted attacks, anger and hostility. Those who practice feng shui incorporate pink into the design scheme of their home when they wish to improve the quality of a romantic relationship.

The Causes Of Heart Diseases

Heart Disease is the most common cause of death in the United States for people over the age of 65. Men are more likely to have heart disease than women. There are several risk factors for heart disease that cannot be changed, such as heredity, but many heart disease risk factors are in your control, such as what you eat and how much exercise you get.

Sex, Age and Family History Are Factors of Heart Disease

There are several factors that put some people at risk for heart disease more than others. Sex, age and family determine your risk for heart disease. Men are more likely to develop heart disease than women. Men can develop heart disease at a younger age than women. Age is a risk factor in heart disease, too. The older you get, the greater your risk of developing any disease, including heart disease. Family history increases the risk of heart disease. If a direct family member, such as your father, developed heart disease and treated before the age of 55, the risk factor significantly increases.

Smoking and Heart Disease

Smoking increases the risk of heart disease--smokers are two to four times more likely than a non-smoker to develop the disease. Smoking affects the lungs, which requires your heart to pump more blood than a non-smoker. If you are a smoker, everything you do, from walking up a hill to yelling, increases the amount of work your heart has to expend. This can damage your heart.

High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease

High blood pressure is another risk factor for heart disease. There are no symptoms for high blood pressure, and it can put you at risk for stroke, kidney failure and heart attacks without you even knowing it. You should have your blood pressure taken by your physician periodically. If you have increased blood pressure, follow your physician's instructions and make the lifestyle changes he suggests. Many people do not, thus increasing their risk of heart disease.

High Cholesterol and Heart Disease

High cholesterol puts you at risk for heart disease. There are two types of cholesterol--good cholesterol (HDL) and bad (LDL). If your body is producing too much of the LDL cholesterol, it can cause arteries that pump blood to get clogged and become narrower, which can lead to angina or heart attacks.

Diabetes and Heart Disease

The risk of heart disease is up to five times higher for a person with diabetes compared with someone who doesn't have diabetes. Diabetes is the most common cause of heart attacks in people under 30, and they are less likely to survive a heart attack. Diabetics also have a higher risk of having high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels than a non diabetic.

Obesity and Heart Disease

Obesity can cause heart disease. If you are 30 percent over your ideal body weight you are considered obese. With obesity you have an increased risk of diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In addition, obesity increases the strain on your heart by the heart having to pump harder when expending any type of energy such as walking up a flight of steps.

Value Of Rose Quartz

Use sets the value of rose quartz.

Quartz is the most abundant mineral on earth. Rose quartz is simply composed of silicone dioxide and gets its rose color from trace elements of titanium, iron or magnesium impurities. Colors range from a soft rose pink to a deep rose color. Rose quartz, the state mineral of South Dakota, is mined for decorative purposes, and its value is contingent on how it is used. Within the United States, most rose quartz is mined in Arkansas. Brazil has long been a world supplier of rose quartz.

Jewelry

As a semiprecious gemstone, cabochon cuts that are convex, rounded and polished without faceting are often used to create jewelry with rose quartz. In mass-produced jewelry, most of the value of a piece is the silver or gold used in the setting. In custom jewelry, the design and creativity of the artist is what commands a high price, at times hundreds of dollars, for rose quartz jewelry.

Hardscape

Tumbled rose quartz pebbles and stones are used to create paths and provide ground cover within gardens. Large boulders in rose quartz are also marketed as architectural accents and as the building elements for rock gardens. Most of the cost in this application of rose quartz is energy related---the cost of mining and transporting the rose quartz to you.

Interior Tiles

Tumbled or polished, rose quartz is a striking tile for interior walls and surfaces. Promoted as a gemstone tile, size determines pricing. The tile manufacturing process is the primary cost of goods with rose quartz tiles.

Home Accessories

Small statues, chess set pieces and decorative accents are sometimes produced in rose quartz. The detail and workmanship of these pieces establishes their value. A beautifully carved figurine can easily price at a $100 or more.

Spirituality

Feng Shui and holistic practitioners are among those who promote rose quartz for its healing properties. Feng Shui beliefs are that it reduces mental stress and stabilizes mood and emotions. Holistic practitioners associate rose quartz with the fourth chakra, matters of the heart. Presentation and instructions are the primary cost when rose quartz is purchased for spirituality. A velvet bag filled with rose quartz pebbles can be purchased for under $10.

Signs & Symptoms Of Heart Disease For Women

Studies have shown that the signs and symptoms of heart disease for women are often different from those for men, and may often be misdiagnosed or ignored as something else. This is why women should become more educated in the signs and symptoms.

Symptoms of Coronary Artery Disease

Symptoms of a female's heart attack can be very different than those in a man, and as a result, may often be misdiagnosed. Women are more likely to suffer pain in the jaw, back and shoulder than are men.

Symptoms of a Heart Attack

Common heart attack symptoms are shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, cold sweat, dizziness, discomfort in the back or chest, nausea or a burning sensation in the chest or abdomen.

Angina

Angina or pain in the chest should be regarded as dangerous in women, just as in men. If you do not have a nitroglycerine prescription, you should call 911 if the pain persists for five or more minutes. If you do have a prescription, take one pill and put it under your tongue. Wait five minutes, and if the pain persists, call 911.

Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is the rapid and irregular beating of the heart. When this happens, the heart cannot efficiently pump blood out of the heart, and as a result the blood might pool in the heart chambers, which increases the chance of a blood clot. Signs of atrial fibrillation are weakness, light-headedness, shortness of breath, chest pains and heart palpitations.

Warning

All signs and symptoms discussed signify a warning that something dangerous may be happening within your body. These should be treated as such, and you should seek immediate medical attention. Call 911, rather than get someone to drive you to the hospital. The ambulance will have EMTs who are trained in dealing with heart problems, and they will also have equipment onboard to immediately start treating you.

Protect Clothes With Bamboo Charcoal In The Closet

Bamboo charcoal is strips of bamboo burned in a pressurized kiln. It has high filtration and absorption properties, making it ideal for eliminating odors and absorbing impurities in the air. One of the many uses for bamboo charcoal is placing it in your closet to protect clothing and shoes.

Instructions

1. Buy bamboo charcoal. You can find it at most Chinese or Japanese markets. If you don't have one available to you, order it online from websites such as 3DhealthStore.com (See Resources section).

2. Place a piece of bamboo charcoal on a shelf in your closet. Depending on the size of your closet, you may want to put several pieces throughout the closet. With its ability to regulate humidity, bamboo charcoal will keep your clothing dry and free of mold.

3. Set a few pieces of bamboo charcoal near your shoes. Not only will the regulated humidity keep your shoes in top condition, bamboo charcoal's ability to absorb odors will keep your shoes from smelling unpleasant.

4. Use a piece of bamboo charcoal next to any clothing that needs deodorizing. For example, you can freshen up a jacket exposed to cigarette smoke just by placing it near the bamboo charcoal.

5. Replace your bamboo charcoal every 4 to 6 months to keep your clothes looking and smelling their best.

Natural Cures For Indigestion

Indigestion is a common affliction resulting from overeating, eating the wrong kinds of foods, or an overall lack of a healthy lifestyle. It is rarely dangerous, though it can feel miserable while you are in the throes of it. Accordingly, many people turn to natural remedies rather than calling a doctor. Medical sources from the Mayo Clinic to the Farmer's Almanac have all suggested a number of common-sense cures for indigestion.

Exercise

Walking for thirty minutes after a meal will aid the digestion process. Regular exercise will help maintain a healthy body weight, further reducing the chances of indigestion.

Peppermint

Peppermint serves to soothe an irritated stomach lining and reduce the intensity of upset stomachs. Peppermint-flavored tea is an excellent way to facilitate this.

Carbonation

Carbonated beverages such as ginger ale or Sprite settle the contents of your stomach with their bubbles. Avoid caffeinated sodas, however. They are diuretics and may cause dehydration.

Eat Smart

Healthy eating habits can prevent indigestion. Beyond the kinds of foods you eat, this means eating moderate portions, chewing your food thoroughly and taking your time when you eat.

Lower Stress

Stress has been known to increase stomach acid and retard the digestive process. Work on ways of relaxing in your day-to-day life, such as practicing yoga or engaging in simple breathing exercises.

Does Ultrasonic Repellent Work

Repellents, traps and other tools meant to eliminate or prevent pest attacks or invasions can sometimes have questionable health effects or be considered inhumane. Ultrasonic devices are meant to repel pests through a high-frequency sound that humans cannot hear. An examination of the scientific trial history of ultrasonic repellents can determine whether they really work.

Scarcity of Scientific Data

The history of scientific trials performed on ultrasonic pest control devices is, unfortunately, short and uneventful. Some say that because of such a serious lack of evidence involving the effectiveness of such devices, they most likely are ineffective. Others argue, however, that simply because there isn't an abundance of proof to the contrary doesn't mean ultrasonic repellents don't work.

Repelling Mosquitoes

The Clinician's Guide to Mosquitoes and Mosquito Repellents, a collection of information gathered from peer-reviewed research studies and published by the Annals of Internal Medicine, concluded that "Ultrasonic devices, outdoor bug 'zappers,' and bat houses are not effective against mosquitoes."

A blinded, controlled trial reported in May 2000 found similar results. It said in its summary, "The ultrasound device used was not effective against mosquitoes in this strictly controlled trial."

Repelling Rats

A study performed in the Philippines set out to test three different ultrasonic devices that each emitted sounds of different frequencies against rats. Although a small level of effectiveness was observed, the results were "highly dependent upon ultrasonic frequency, intensity and the pre-existing rodent-infestation condition" according to the abstract of the study's report. While higher frequencies may provide some protection against rats, there are so many factors involved that ultrasonic devices may not necessarily be a cure-all for rodent infestations.

Conclusion and Recommendation

Based on the limited amount of proof available, the efficiency claims of ultrasonic repellents are highly suspect. Many claim to have seen results from such devices, however, so ultimately the decision is up to the consumer whether or not to invest money in such electronics.

If ultrasonic repellent is something you'd still like to try, then do so. Scientific tests can only show relationships between two variables and occasionally do not hold up in all circumstances. However, given the results shown above, purchasing a device at a location that accepts returns is the best recommendation.

New Vertigo Treatment

In the 1990s a treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, the most common kind of vertigo, emerged and gained wide acceptance. The Epley maneuver, as it is called, was created by Dr. John Epley, according to the website aliveandwell.org reprinting a 2006 article from the Oregonian.

Definition of Condition

Vertigo is a feeling of dizziness, which makes it seem that things are spinning around you. Often it is associated with the inner ear, but it may also be attributed to vision problems, according to medterms.com.

Treatment Type

The Epley maneuver, a series of noninvasive, painless head movements, has replaced medications and surgery as a treatment of vertigo in many instances.

Treatment Technique

Medical professionals trained in the technique tilt the head in different positions to alleviate the symptoms associated with vertigo.

Results

The head movements can move floating ear canal particles back into place in the inner ear, according to aliveandwell.org.

Availability

The Epley Omniax, a device also created by Epley, is available to aid in the diagnosis and maneuvering of the vertigo patient. Both the Epley maneuver and the Epley Omniax are available from medical providers trained in the technique.

Toothache Home Treatment

Next to childbirth, a toothache can be one of the most wretched pains anyone could ever experience. It often comes on suddenly, offering its victim no warning before the unbearable, drop-to-your-knees pain begins. In these situations, medications such as Tylenol usually do nothing to relieve the pain. But there are some home remedies that may just help you the next time the pain rears up again.

Use Pepper

Mix together a pinch of pepper and one-quarter teaspoon of table salt. Apply it to the tooth giving you grief and you may find relief in a matter of minutes. Mixing a pinch of pepper powder with clove oil and placing it directly on the cavity may alleviate the pain as well.

Use Garlic

Garlic is a home remedy for a myriad of conditions, and toothaches are no exception. Mince one clove of garlic with a piece rock salt and place it on the affected tooth. It may not only relieve the pain but also cure the underlying problem. This is because the antibiotic compound allicin in garlic is released when the garlic is crushed. This may also slow the growth of bacteria.

Use Clove Oil

Clove may have the ability to reduce pain, and because of its antiseptic properties, it can also help decrease the risk of infection. If you apply clove oil to the cavity of a decayed tooth, it may help relieve the pain.

Apply Wheatgrass

Though wheatgrass can be chewed, providing beneficial results, the juice produced from it makes a great mouthwash. Swishing with the mouthwash may help relieve the pain quickly, and it will also neutralize bacteria in the mouth.

Ear Candle Recipe

Ear candling is an ancient procedure that involves the use of specially-made ear candles designed to draw-out wax. A hollow candle is inserted into the ear canal, lit at the opposite end, and as the candle burns, the warm smoke loosens ear wax that collects into the unburned portion of the candle. Proponents of ear candling believe that removing wax and other debris from the ears helps to balance the body, improving physical and spiritual well-being.

Risks

There are certain risks associated with ear candling, including burns to the ear, skin and hair from hot wax, blockage of the ear canal from candle wax and perforated ear drums.

Don't get ear candling if you have any ear problems, such as damage to the eardrum or ear tubes, congenital hearing loss or recent surgical procedures to the ear.

You should not perform ear candling on yourself; schedule a treatment with a trained practitioner who is skilled in the procedure.

Procedure

Before your ear candling treatment, the practitioner examines your ears to determine the condition of the eardrums, check the extent of the wax buildup and make sure there are no obstructions in the ear canals.

The practitioner covers your head and hair with a protective cover, and you'll lie on your side on the treatment table. You are given a gentle massage along the ear area to stimulate blood flow in preparation for the ear candle treatment.

The ear candle is lit and gently inserted into your outer ear canal, which creates a vacuum that draws out the wax. It's normal to hear a slight whistling or crackling as your ear canal warms.

The practitioner removes the candle and repeats with another candle. Two to three candles are used for each ear, and the treatment can run one to two hours.

You may feel a temporary sensation of pressure in your ears after each ear candling session.

Remedies To Make Hair Thicker & Longer

Several remedies exist to thicken and strengthen the hair.

As one's hair begins to show signs of thinning or receding, the person naturally begins to ponder ways to prevent this seemingly inevitable loss. Several home remedies exist to combat the threat of baldness--or simply to strengthen and thicken your hair in general. These include the use of aloe vera, stinging nettle, wheat germ oil and green tea.

Stinging Nettle

Take this either as an extract or a pill. The root of the stinging nettle has been used for centuries as a hair-strengthening agent. The minerals and lipids that help make up stinging nettle work to stimulate the hair follicles, leading to more healthy hair overall and possibly increased hair thickness. If using the extract, massage it into the hair and scalp once a day.

Green Tea

Try several cups of green tea on a daily basis. This is recommended by herbalists to thicken and strengthen hair. Green tea can likewise be taken as a capsule. Either way, green tea contains catechins (antioxidants) that work to prevent testosterone from being converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a type of testosterone that leads to baldness. Green tea is available at many grocery stores, or at any health food store.

Wheat Germ

Use wheat germ oil--an extremely rich, unrefined oil. It's packed with vitamins D, A and E, and is rich in protein. This unique oil is extracted from the wheat germ plant. Once extracted, it lasts for about eight months. Keep wheat germ oil in a cool place, as high temperatures tend to degrade its quality. A few drops of wheat germ oil are typically massaged into the scalp. The massage itself can be beneficial, as it draws blood to the scalp area, bringing with it extra nutrients that can promote hair growth and healthy hair follicles. Massage wheat germ oil into your scalp daily.

Aloe Vera

Rub aloe vera into the hair or scalp taily to encourage growth and strengthen hair. Aloe vera has been used for generations by many of South America's Indian tribes. It contains superoxide dismutane, an enzyme known for its hair-nourishing and stimulating abilities. Aloe vera additionally stimulates the creation of nitric oxide, also good for combating hair loss. Aloe vera is available at any health food store, or, typically, even from conventional pharmacies.

Signs & Symptoms Of Metastasized Ovarian Cancer To Lungs

Signs & Symptoms of Metastasized Ovarian Cancer to Lungs

According to Medline Plus, ovarian cancer is fairly common, being the fifth most common cancer in females. If left untreated, ovarian cancer will eventually metastasize throughout the body to other organs, including the lungs. Although ovarian cancer is not normally known for metastasizing into the lungs, it is possible, so be aware of the potential symptoms.

Coughing

Persistent coughing is a potential sign that ovarian cancer has metastasized to the lungs. Do not concern yourself with a transient cough, or a cough that has an easily discernible cause, as these are unlikely to indicate metastatic lung cancer. However, be aware of a cough that lasts for an unnatural amount of time or is of surprising intensity. Be especially cautious if you are coughing up blood.

Localized Pain

Localized pain in, or behind, the ribcage is another potential sign that ovarian cancer has spread to the lungs. Be wary of pain which is persistent or severe, and pain that has no explicable cause.

Shortness of Breath

Metastatic lung cancer will impede your breathing capacity as your normal, healthy cells are replaced by cancerous tissue. Therefore, diminished lung capacity is one indication of metastatic lung cancer. Activities resulting in abnormal shortness of breath, such as while climbing stairs or walking, might be symptomatic of metastatic lung cancer.

Abnormal Weight Loss

Weight loss can be another symptom of cancer spreading throughout the body. While weight can fluctuate normally by three to five pounds daily depending on the proximity of your last meal, water retention, and other factors, be cautious if your weight declines by more than eight to ten pounds without any reasonable explanation. If you have been eating normally and your weight is still decreasing, it might be a sign of cancer that has metastasized.

Therapeutic Team Building Activities

Wilderness therapy offers a wide variety of therapeutic team-building activities.

Most team-building activities have therapeutic side effects, even when therapy is not the intended goal. Building connections, expanding communication and increasing trust between individuals on a team can provide stress relief, instill confidence and create a sense of belonging. Therapeutic team-building activities have therapy as their central intention and are designed to give participants a deeper sense of themselves, while sharing and connecting with other group members. Use team-building activities to enhance the effects of group therapy sessions by adding learning and fun to the experience.

Therapeutic Drumming

Drumming with a team provides a way to tune in with your team and the deep rhythms of life.

Therapeutic drumming is the creation of percussionist Jim Greiner. Greiner recommends group drumming and rhythm activities as a way to relieve stress, to rejuvenate the mind and body and as an uplifting and therapeutic activity. Host a therapeutic group drum circle with a variety of different percussion instruments appropriate to the abilities of the participants. Include tambourines, hand drums, congas, bells, cymbals and any other drums you have available. If you have no drums available, consider using drumsticks with buckets, pots, pans and other noise making items. Hire an experienced music teacher who has done therapeutic group work to encourage all group members to get involved. By the end of the evening, everyone will be part of the collective rhythm.

Creative Coloring

Create a piece of art as a team-building therapy activity.

Creative Coloring is a therapeutic group activity that allows team members to work together on a creative project that requires cooperation and communication. Every individual receives a chance to display talent in art, design, communication and self-expression. Give each member of the team a different colored marker, crayon or colored pencil. If the group is small, give each member two different colors. Instruct the group to create a picture using all the colors, with each individual using only the color given at the beginning. Group members must decide on what to create and then decide depict it. If the group has trouble coming up with an idea, provide a list of ideas to choose from that involve each color. Discuss the results at the end of the activity.

Equine Therapy

Aspen Ranch in Loa, Utah, offers Equine Therapy as a form of team-building for at-risk youth and troubled teens. By working with horses in many different situations, teams of students learn to care for, interact with and ride horses. This can be a powerful bonding experience. Organize an equine therapy program or day trip for your team, or hire equine therapy professionals to conduct a team retreat into the wild on horseback. Horses help to teach patience, build confidence, and deal well with frustration. Working with a team to create a wilderness retreat on horseback demands intimate teamwork and can provide life-changing therapeutic opportunities for all team members.

Goji Berry Uses

Goji berries are usually cultivated in China. They have been used for hundreds of years as an important ingredient in Chinese herbal medicine. Goji berries are nutritionally rich--containing beta-carotene; vitamins C, B1, and B2; antioxidants; and amino acids. Chinese herbalists combine the nutrients of the Goji berries along with other herbs to combat disease and strengthen the immune system.

Protect The Liver

Goji berries contain betaine. Betaine is used by the liver to produce choline which helps the body to calm nervousness, protects against fatty liver disease and promotes muscles growth.

Strengthen Eyesight

Goji berries have been traditionally use to help enhance vision. The berry contains a high amount of beta-carotene which the body uses to strengthen your eyes and vision.

Enhance Immune System

Goji berries contain physalin, which is an active ingredient used to combat diseases like hepatitis B and leukemia. This ingredient, along with the berries' vitamin content, strengthens the immune system to fight off common colds, as well.

Anti-Inflammatory Agent

The berries also contain beta-sistoserol, which is an anti-inflammatory agent. Beta-sistoserol is one of the ingredients used to treat sexual impotence and control prostate enlargement.

Control Blood Pressure

Goji berries contain the active ingredient cyperone, which helps to control blood pressure. The ingredient cyperone is also used in treatments to combat cervical cancer.

Know Your Thyroid Is Low

An underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough of certain hormones. According to the Mayo Clinic, hypothyroidism is most common among women over the age of 50, though anyone can develop the condition at any age. The symptoms are detectable once you have had the disorder for a while. You need to obtain proper diagnosis from your doctor before starting any treatment.

Instructions

Instructions

1. Notice whether you may have symptoms of hypothyroidism. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common symptoms are excessive fatigue, depression, sudden weight gain, increased appetite, dry skin, dry hair, brittle nails, muscle weakness, stiff joints, heavy menstrual periods in women and cold temperature sensitivity.

2. Take your temperature for three days in a row to determine your average temperature. According to allonhealth.com, consecutive readings below 97.8 degrees Fahrenheit may indicate an underactive thyroid.

3. Ask your doctor for a diagnosis. He may refer you to an endocrinologist, a physician who specializes in endocrine glands like the thyroid. Know your family medical history. Thyroid disorders and other autoimmune disorders tend to run in families.

4. Your doctor will probably order a blood test. A blood test for hypothyroidism checks TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and signals the thyroid to produce T3 and T4 hormones. Usually a blood test for a hypothyroid patient shows a high TSH level and low T3 and T4 levels.

5. An ultrasound can rule out cancer of the thyroid and may also reveal the presence of nodules, which are fluid-filled cysts that can be associated with hypothyroidism. Thyroid nodules are most often benign, or noncancerous.

6. If you have hypothyroidism, the physician will probably prescribe a thyroid hormone replacement drug such as Synthroid or Levothyroid. The dosage depends upon the blood test results. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms should start to subside within two weeks. Hormone replacement needs to be taken for life.

My Dwarf Myrtle Leaves Have Wilted What Happened

Crape myrtles, or Lagerstroemia indica, are ornamental shrubs that produce blossoms in a variety of colors, including pink, red and lavender. The dwarf varieties of crape myrtle grow to a mature height of around 3 feet, making them suitable for a variety of landscape applications. Like other ornamental shrubs, dwarf myrtles may suffer from certain disorders that cause the leaves to wilt.

Water Requirements

One of the most common reasons for wilted leaves is improper watering. Both excessive and insufficient moisture conditions can lead to wilting and leaf drop in dwarf myrtles. Mature specimens of these ornamental shrubs require supplemental water only when the soil near the roots shows signs of dryness, although new myrtle shrubs do best with evenly moist soil for about the first two months of growth. Water your established dwarf myrtles deeply whenever the soil near the roots feels dry and crumbly, applying enough water to soak the root ball.

Fungus

Fungal diseases often cause wilting and poor growth in dwarf myrtles. Fusarium wilt disease affects numerous ornamental shrubs, including dwarf myrtles. This fungal disease can spread from plant to plant, making it necessary to treat or remove infected plants immediately. Fusarium wilt tends to thrive in moist soils and humid conditions. Infected dwarf myrtles generally develop yellow leaves that begin appearing on one side, gradually spreading throughout the plant before curling and falling. Fusarium wilt may spread throughout the foliage, resulting in the eventual death of these attractive shrubs.

Pests

Although many pests that feed on dwarf myrtles appear on the leaves, stems and blossoms of these ornamental shrubs, pests that live below the surface of the soil can disrupt the flow of nutrients through the roots, causing the leaves to wilt. Root-feeding organisms that feed on dwarf myrtle roots include nematodes, insects and slugs. Examining the roots of a wilting dwarf myrtle can reveal the presence of root-feeding pests.

Treatment

Removing dead leaves and grasses from the soil beneath your dwarf myrtles will help reduce the risk of both pest and fungal damage. Pruning out dead branches and thinning out thick branches also helps provide optimal airflow, helping to prevent fungal growth. Always remove cut vegetation from the area around your shrubs. Treat fusarium wilt and other fungal conditions with a fungicide labeled for use on ornamental shrubs. Use a pesticide treatment in the form of a soil drench to help kill and control pests that live beneath the soil and feed on the roots of your dwarf myrtles.

Establish Eating Habits When Recovering From Anorexia

Establish Eating Habits When Recovering From Anorexia

One of the main issues that an anorexia patients have to deal with is their perceptions of food. Those suffering with anorexia have a complex relationship between their body images, their perceptions of food and their desire for control over both. Your eating habits during recovery from anorexia need to be established with long-term health goals in mind.

Instructions

1. Schedule regular appointments with your nutritionist to reinforce your new eating habits. Nutritionists will help you establish a food and exercise diary, as well as provide tough love when you skip meals. You can get a referral to a nutritionist through your primary care physician.

2. Take care of psychological issues that contribute to anorexia and other eating disorders by speaking with a therapist. A therapist with past clients who have dealt with anorexia can get to the core issues that caused poor eating habits in the past.

3. Balance your caloric intake throughout the day to avoid the internal peaks and valleys that contribute to bad eating habits. You need to steadily increase the number of calories and meals you eat while recovering from anorexia. Excessive calories in a few large meals can lead to digestive problems.

4. Pack a lunch that meets the eating habits you establish while recovering from anorexia. This lunch should be well-balanced with fruits, vegetables and low-fat meats that will help you meet your calorie goals throughout the day. A bagged lunch at work can help you avoid eating bad foods, save money and establish a healthy routine.

5. Stick to a set of vitamins and minerals that will help you maintain your new diet while recovering from anorexia. You should take vitamin D and multi-vitamin supplements once a day to help you round out your diet. Minerals like zinc have been shown to help anorexia patients add weight at a healthy rate.

6. Chart out long-term weight and health goals when you develop eating habits. You can utilize spreadsheets to compare your calorie intake with your doctor's goals on a daily basis. Print out a copy when you head to your next appointment to demonstrate your commitment to the prescribed program.

Symptoms Of Bipolar Disorder In Men

Bipolar Disorder is a medical condition known as a depressive disorder. It affects the brain's chemistry and functions. Because it does, it has different results depending on the individual. The commonality of bipolar disorder across patients is that it is characterized by episodes of mania and depression. The way these patients act, feel or think is all dependent upon the type of bipolar disorder, brain chemistry, and the patient's gender.

Mania Symptoms

The manic episodes of bipolar disorder exhibit the following symptoms: hyperactivity, acting impulsively, difficulty concentrating, racing thoughts, inflated self opinions, excessive talking, and less need for sleep

Depression Symptoms

The depressive episodes of bipolar disorder exhibit the following symptoms: feeling sad, anxious, hopeless, or negative for a significant period of time, difficulty remembering or concentrating on things, difficulty making decisions, lack of enjoyment for usual activities, eating and sleeping pattern changes, and suicidal thoughts.

Associated Symptoms

According to research made available through the U.S. Library of Medicine and the National Institute of Health, men with bipolar disorder will more often have problems with--and exhibit signs of--substance abuse, particularly during manic episodes.

Effects

The behavioral patterns and mood swings symptomatic of bipolar disorder are often perceived wrongly by men to be a character flaw or sign of weakness, the result of which leads fewer men to pursue proper diagnosis and treatment.

Misconceptions

Bipolar disorder occurs just as frequently in men as it does in women.

Rapid Cycling

Rapid cycling bipolar disorder (symptomatically characterized by four or more manic-depressive episodes occurring within one year) is more common in men than it is in women.

Finding eyeglasses covered by Medi-Cal is a simple process if it is part of your medical coverage.

If you are one of the beneficiaries of vision care services offered by the California Medical Assistance Program (Medi-Cal), the process of finding eyeglasses is fairly simple. After determining eligibility and finding a participating eye doctor, you need to work with your doctor to determine whether you need glasses and what prescription you need. Finding places to choose frames and get your prescription filled involves finding an eligible provider from California's Medi-Cal web site, but you may have to go no further than your own eye doctor's office to choose your new eyeglasses.

Instructions

1. Determine whether you are a member of the groups eligible for vision services under Medi-Cal changes from 2009. You must be 20-years-old or younger with full Medi-Cal services, a resident of certain nursing homes or a pregnant woman whose doctor can attest that not having vision services will harm the unborn baby.

2. Visit an optometrist or an ophthalmologist listed as a provider in the Medi-Cal program to begin the process for obtaining eyeglasses covered by Medi-Cal. Under the plan's requirements, your doctor must determine that glasses are medically necessary. Find a participating doctor on the California Department of Health Care Services "Find a Vision Care Doctor" web page, and bring your Benefits Identification Card with you to the appointment.

3. Choose a pair of eyeglass frames from the optical dispensary in your eye doctor's office if one is available. If your eye doctor does not have frames in his or her office, you can take your eyeglass prescription to another optometrist, ophthalmologist or optician with an eyeglass dispensary to choose frames and have your eyeglasses made.

History Of Time Capsules

The U.S. Capitol Building has contained several time capsules for the good of the U.S .citizens.

Time capsules are an ancient tradition dating back to the 7th century BC. Leaving object buried for future generations to find is a tradition that has become part of several cultures. These ceremonies differ and the items contained inside are different, but marking of the capsule to be found and opened on a specific date in the future makes one contemplate how different the world will be when the capsule is opened.

First-Time Capsules

The first-time capsules were used to preserve documents or items of interest to future generations. They are considered a way to share culture and history that might be lost over time as people forget or change stories passed down from one generation to another. These capsules were buried in foundations of building or near landmarks that would lead to the easy recovery of the time capsule in the future. The first time that it was recorded and buried was in the 7th century BC by Esarhaddon, who was the king of Assyria.

Masonic Time Capsules

The Freemasons use their cornerstone ceremonies as a way to deposit time capsules to be found by future generations. Their ceremonies are symbolic and use allegories to tell the story of the cornerstone of King Solomon's Temple. As part of the ceremony a cornerstone that is hollow is often used. Once the stone is placed and anointed with corn, wine and oil which symbolize sacrifice a capsule is placed in the stone. Often with a master key to the building, newspapers of the time, photos of people who work or were part of the buildings construction and a program from the ceremony for the laying of the stone. These are found when buildings are renovated or when a building is raised.

Crypt of Civilization

One of the most famous and compete time capsules is known as the Crypt of Civilization located at Ogelthorpe University. The capsule was sealed on May 28, 1940, with instruction to be opened May 28, 8113. This was the date that would double the amount of recorded human history, according to Dr. Thornwell Jacobs, who compiled the materials in the capsule. The time capsule contains microfilm, photos and items that document the entire history or human existence up to the time the capsule was sealed.

Time Capsules for Celebrations

Time capsules are also placed at times of celebration. There was a time capsule placed to celebrate the centennial of the United States of America. The time capsule that was placed near the steps of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. was opened as directed during the bicentennial at which time a new time capsule replaced the one just opened. This is a common tradition among people to mark time at important events in history.

Most Wanted Lost Time Capsules

Burying a time capsules is usually done carefully so it can be found and opened at the time requested. However, some rather famous time capsules have been missing or were stolen before they could ever be buried. The most famous is the George Washington cornerstone for the U.S. Capitol Building. The War of 1812 and several renovations to the building caused the original cornerstone to be lost. The building has been searched and the stone and time capsule were never found. It is not known if Washington actually placed a time capsule in the cornerstone.

Hiv Mild Symptoms

Early detection of the HIV virus can significantly increase treatment options and decrease the spread of HIV/AIDS. From children to heterosexual and homosexual persons who may have been exposed to the virus, testing is important and should be obtained immediately. For a complete list of early-, middle- and late-stage HIV symptoms, contact your physician. The following is a summary of mild HIV symptoms with information regarding early, middle and late infection. While the list provided herein is accurate and up-to-date, it is not comprehensive and should not be taken as the only source for HIV/AIDS information.

Early Symptoms

Early symptoms of HIV can vary, but upon infection many patients describe an onset of flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, sore throat, swollen lymph glands and rash. These early symptoms can persist for a period of two to four weeks. During this period, the immune system will slowly come under attack and ultimately see a decrease in helper T cells (CD4 lymphocytes) as a result.

White Blood Cells

White blood cells are used to fight viral and bacterial infections in the body. However, when the immune system becomes compromised as a result of the HIV virus, white blood cells become fewer in number. Over time (approximately eight to nine years), the immune system becomes so defeated and compromised that an increased number of mild symptoms occur as the body fails to fight the HIV virus and the white blood cell count drops more and more.

Mild Symptoms

According to the Mayo Clinic, mild symptoms include swollen lymph nodes (often one of the first signs of HIV infection), diarrhea, weight loss, fever, coughing and shortness of breath. These symptoms mark a significant depletion of immune cells and the advancement of the HIV virus. As the HIV virus continues to break down the immune system, destroying T cells and creating opportunities for infection, mild symptoms will continue to affect the body.

Final Phase of HIV

The final phase of infection brings the most significant depletion of the immune system and total advancement of the virus. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms generally start 10 years after infection and can include soaking night sweats, shaking chills or fever higher than 100 Fahrenheit (38 Celsium) for several weeks, dry cough and shortness of breath, chronic diarrhea, persistent white spots or unusual lesions on the tongue or in the mouth, headaches, blurred and distorted vision and weight loss.

AIDS

During the final phase of infection, the HIV virus has progressed to AIDS and the body is at its most weakened state. Many of the symptoms that occur are the result of opportunistic infections. Other symptoms include persistent, unexplained fatigue, swelling of the lymph nodes for more than three months, and persistent headaches. It is important to note that some of these symptoms are associated with cancers that are common during late-stage HIV.

Fast Teeth Whitening Tips

Some people are in a rush to get their teeth whiter. Perhaps they have an important job interview or a wedding or high school reunion to attend. Whatever the reason, there are a few methods available that can whiten teeth in a short period of time. Of course the remedies with the most noticeable results cost the most, but there are over-the-counter treatments that can be effective and also inexpensive.

See a Cosmetic Dentist

The most dramatic results occur in a dentist's chair. A dentist can whiten teeth in 30 minutes to one hour. A dentist uses peroxide-based bleaching products. In some cases, the bleaching process is combined with light, heat or a laser. The heat of these techniques accelerates the whitening, according to the Oral Health Guide. By using a dentist, you can lighten the color of your teeth by up to eight shades. One office visit can greatly improve the color of your teeth. But such in-office teeth whitening can cost $200 to more than $1000.

Try a Whitening Mouthguard

If money is an issue, a less expensive way to whiten your teeth quickly is to use a mouthguard filled with a bleaching agent. You can get this teeth whitening kit in a drugstore or at your dentist's office. The advantage of using your dentist is that you can get a custommade mouthguard that is more affective in evenly whitening your teeth. A store bought kit lets you make an impression of your teeth, but some kits are better than others. Some people have trouble getting a good fitting mouthguard. The bleaching agent is put into the mouthguard, which is then worn for a few hours each day. This is a good way to get whiter teeth in one day. One caveat is that some people find that the mouthguard is uncomfortable to wear.

Use Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a common bleaching agent. It is used in many teeth whitening toothpastes. Most teeth whitening strips or brush-on gels also use peroxide-based ingredients. A bottle of hydrogen peroxide can be found in any drugstore for about $1. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows a solution of 3 to 3.5 percent for internal use. But higher percentages can be found in some teeth whitening products. To use hydrogen peroxide, dip a toothbrush in the solution and brush on the teeth. Doing this for a few minutes two or three times a day can brighten teeth in a short period of time. If your gums or teeth are sensitive to the peroxide, add water to dilute its strength.
