Definition

Causes

Effects

Detection


Doctors routinely recommend screening---usually a DEXA X-ray scan--for women age 40 or older. This test measures hip and spine bone density, but small changes in the positioning of these parts of the body can skew the results.


Treatment/Prevention


Hormone treatment and other drugs are available to treat and prevent osteoporosis, but one of the most effective types of therapy is resistance training, which strengthens muscles and bones. Examples are weight lifting using free weights and resistance machines and bands, elliptical machines, stair climbers and water exercises that work the arms and upper spine. Flexibility exercises to improve posture and range of motion are also beneficial. But swimming, walking (except for stair-climbing), cycling and swimming don't involve enough resistance to be effective.

5. Give rewards to help keep the ADHD teen interested in staying on task. If the tasks are completed on time and grades do not drop, provide verbal encouragement. Offer more privileges, such as staying out later. The reward system should be consistently presented on a weekly or monthly basis.


6. Set up an appointment with a therapist to discuss the teen's ADHD progress and possible treatment options available. Inform the teen that the meeting is important and discuss any expectations you may have.

Create a designer line of candles to sell or to fill your home with the smells you love. Make a relaxing retreat or an energizing morning shower scrub, all with scented oils.








Instructions


1. Choose good quality essential oils from each of the three categories of oils, known as top note, middle note and base note. Top note oils have strong scents that dissipate quickly. Middle note oils have a barely detectable scent, but last longer and carry the top note well. Base note oils are heavy, with a strong scent that last longer than either top or middle note oils.


2. Mix your oils one drop at a time into small glass jars. Baby food jars work well. Make a note of how many drops of each oil you use per jar, and tape the note to the jars. This will allow you to identify the oil blend and its recipe later.


3. Seal the glass jars and set aside in a cool, dark place for at least 48 hours. The scents will develop over this time. A blend that smells wonderful in the beginning can be too strong or too weak later.








4. Choose your favorite scent from the mixes. Follow the recipe you used to create the test mix---increase each drop to 1/2 tsp. Mix the oils into the glass jar again, and allow the scent to develop. After 48 hours, the oil is ready to add to your products.


5. Choose your product: candle, body wash or lotion. Using a candle warmer, place a jarred candle on it. Once the wax has warmed completely, the wax will be liquefied. Add a few drops of your oil blend. Mix well with a wooden skewer. Allow to harden, then enjoy the scent.


Warm 1 cup shampoo base in a saucepan with 1/2 cup of water. Stir until warm, then add several drops of your oil blend. Stir well, incorporating the oil well. Allow to cool then pour into a bottle and label for body wash.


Warm unscented lotion base over a very low heat or in a double boiler. Once warm, add in the scented oil. Stir well, pour it into a bottle, then cap after cooling.

It's well documented that colors can affect people's moods. For example, green is said to be calming. Recently, scientists have discovered that colors can also help people with seasickness. In our health conscious world today many people are trying remedies that do not involve putting chemicals into their bodies. Color therapy offers a way to overcome motion sickness without worrying about the side effects of drugs.


Seasickness


Seasickness is a form of motion sickness. It occurs when the brain receives signals from the inner ear and eyes telling the body that it is in motion. When these signals do not match, you may start to feel nauseous and/or break out in a cold sweat. People with severe seasickness often feel dizzy and vomit.


Yellow








According to Brigitte Mars, a color therapist, yellow is a warm color that helps fight motion sickness. It stimulates the nerves and along with seasickness, it also helps people with "allergies, arthritis, asthma, constipation, coughs, depression, diabetes, eczema, gallstones, gas, hiatal hernia, hypothyroidism, indigestion, lymphatic congestion, motion sickness and obesity," says Mars.


Color


The National Center for Biotechnology Information conducted a study on how color affects the symptoms of motion sickness. Study participants who viewed a rotating cylinder with a patterned interior experienced motion sickness. These people got sick fastest, with headaches and dizziness when the cylinder's interior had white, red, yellow, black, green and blue stripes. The participants experienced fewer symptoms when the cylinder had black and white stripes or gray stripes. The scientists hypothesized that the eyes sense a person is motionless because black, white and gray are a "common feature of the stationary environment." They believe the addition of color to the cylinder's interior increases the difference between the cues by the eyes and inner ear,causing them not to match up and causing motion sickness.

What Is Vitamin B17 Used For

Vitamin B17 is a compound about which there has been a great deal of controversy over the years. While more than hundreds of years old, and used in a variety of medical treatments, B17 has been labeled as a quack cure for cancer. The debate still rages over the vitamin's effectiveness in treating one of the biggest diseases of the modern day, and thanks to the Internet, the debate isn't likely to die any time soon.








Vitamin B17


Vitamin B17 is also referred to as laetrile and amygdaline, though all three names are interchangeable as far as common usage. Vitamin B17 is commonly found in a variety of foods that contain a concentration of nitroloside. This is particularly true of foods which fall into the Prunus family, which includes bitter almonds, apricots, blackthorn cherries, nectarines, peaches and plums. Though common in fruits, vitamin B17 is also found in grasses, maize, sorghum, millet, apple seeds and other foods that are not a common part of the modern diet.


Cancer


Vitamin B17 has undergone a great deal of study as a possible cancer medication as an alternative to chemotherapy and other cancer treatments. From the 1950s to the mid-1970s, vitamin B17 was carefully studied by many scientists, and though it has support in other parts of the world (notably Mexico) as a viable cancer treatment. In America, the FDA declared that the claims of Dr. Ernst Krebbs, one of the most successful researchers on the subject of B17 and its effects on cancer, to be outright fraud and "quackery."


Enzymes








The way B17 is supposed to interact with the body, particularly with cancer cells, is a slightly complex claim, but the general idea seems sound. Within the body there is a particular enzyme called rhodanese, which is formed in large quantities, but is never present in cancer cells. On the other hand, wherever there are cancer cells, there is a separate enzyme known as Beta-glucosidase, which isn't found in the bodies of those without cancer. This observation is the key to how vitamin B17 is supposed to fight cancer.


Interaction


Vitamin B17 is made up of two parts glucose, one part hydrogen cyanide and one part benzaldehyde (an analgesic/painkiller). When B17 is ingested into the body, it is broken down by rhodanese into thiocynate and benzoic acid, which are both beneficial to healthy cells. When vitamin B17 comes into contact with cancer cells, there is no rhodanese to break it down. As such, B17 interacts with the beta-glucosidase. When this happens, the hydrogen cyanide and the benzaldehyde combine to produce a poison which seems to only target cancer cells. This is a process called selective toxicity.


Cyanide


The hydrogen cyanide in vitamin B17 most often sends up a red flag to people as a danger. This shouldn't be the case, as hydrogen cyanide has been shown to be chemically inert and nontoxic when taken as a food, or used for a pharmaceutical purpose. Additionally, the hydrogen cyanide is broken down by rhodanese within an hour, and excess is passed normally through a person's urine.

Where to Apply and Quantity


When mosquitoes are biting you from head to toe, the temptation is often to cover every inch of your body with mosquito repellent, but this is not recommended. Why Do We Get Fever Blisters

The cause of fever blisters is a strain of the herpes simplex virus. The virus is highly contagious and affects up to 80 percent of children and adults in the United States, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Other common names for fever blisters are oral herpes and cold sores.


Types


There are two types of the herpes simplex virus. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) is the type that normally causes oral herpes, which is characterized by fever blisters. Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) is the strain that usually causes genital herpes. However, under certain conditions, HSV2 can also cause fever blisters.


Features


The herpes virus enters the body through tiny breaks in the skin. It is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact with someone who is already infected with the virus. Once inside the body, the virus usually lies dormant for long periods, awakening every so often. When the virus awakens and becomes active, it causes an outbreak of blisters on and around the mouth that lasts for approximately two weeks. When fever blisters are present, the virus is highly contagious.

Many people have recurring episodes of fever blister outbreaks. Although it isn't fully understood why some people infected with herpes have recurring outbreaks and others do not, certain factors seem to be related. The most common include emotional stress, illness, injury, fever and exposure to sunlight. In general, anything that weakens the immune system makes a person more susceptible to outbreaks.








Considerations


The most common method of transmitting the herpes virus type 1 is by kissing, but it can also be spread by mouth-to-genital contact, as in oral sex. Children typically get the virus when kissed by an infected adult who is a relative or close friend. Children often transmit the virus by rubbing their fever blisters and then touching other children.


Prevention/Solution


There is no known cure for fever blisters. Once the herpes virus enters the body, it stays there. There are, however, measures you can take to help protect yourself against infection. The Mayo Clinic recommends that you avoid kissing and skin-to-skin contact with an infected person when blisters are present, and avoid sharing personal items, such as razors, lip balm and towels. You should also use sunblock on the face and lips and try to avoid known triggers.


Misconceptions


Fever blisters are often confused with canker sores. According to the Mayo Clinic, they are quite different. Canker sores, which are not contagious, are ulcers that occur inside the mouth, on the tongue and on the inner lining of the cheeks and lips. Fever blisters normally appear on the outside of the mouth, lips and surrounding area.

See a dentist for professional cleanings every six months, and seek attention for any dental problems. In addition, make sure you drink enough water to rinse out any bacteria in your mouth.

Seek medical attention, especially if self-care methods do not solve the problem. Halitosis can be caused by several medical conditions, including sinus infections, tonsillitis and even diabetes. Cosmetic surgery's impact on a your self-esteem can be priceless. But the procedures themselves come with a price tag--one that varies substantially by region, the experience and skills of the surgeon, and the type and extent of the procedure. Types


The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery tracks the number of plastic surgeries completed each year by type of procedure. The ASAPS reports that the most common procedures, in order, are liposuction (the removal of fat from various areas of the body), breast augmentation (implants to enlarge the breast), cosmetic eyelid lifts and rhinoplasty, also known as nose jobs. Each type of surgery comes with a different cost range.


Liposuction


According to Liposuction.com, a directory of plastic surgeons who perform this procedure, the average cost to remove fat from upper and lower abs is $3,000 to $7,500. If you want to trim fat from your tush, it will cost you $1,500 to $4,500. A narrower waist and hips will set you back $1,600 to $5,000. The ranges are wide because if you're a bigger patient, it will require more time and effort to remove excess fat.


Breast Implants


Implants are not created equal. If you opt for saline, on average, it will cost nearly $3,700. Silicone implants, on the other hand, average about $400 more than saline ones, according to ASAPS. Keep in mind that this figure doesn't include expenses associated with post-op garments, prescriptions, staff fees and lab tests.


Eyelid Lifts


At Surgery.org, a compilation of statistics collected by the ASAPS on the average costs of cosmetic surgeries, you'll find that eyelid lifts to "wake up" your eye cost $4,000 on average. The low end of the scale is rougly $1,500, while $7,000 is at the other end of the cost spectrum. Surgeon's fees alone average $2,500, and facility fees and anesthesia cost another $1,500.








Nose Reshaping


If you're on the market for a new nose, expect to pay about $4,200. If the work you need done is extensive, however, you could be charged up to $8,000, reports Einstein Industries, a medical information company.


Warning


Basing your decision on price alone is a bad idea. Seek quality first. Fixing a botched plastic surgery job can cost you far more in the long run. You may have to pay to finish an incomplete surgery or to redo a procedure that left behind scars or caused disfigurement.

What Can A Person Eat On The Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet was created by Dr. Robert Atkins. It is a low carbohydrate diet that avoids highly-processed carbohydrates such as flour, sugars, and high fructose corn syrup. The diet emphasizes whole unprocessed foods low in sugar. Many dieters have had a great deal of success with weight loss on the diet and adhere to the eating plan for life. As with all diets, the Atkins diet is not without controversy.


Proteins


Lean meats and fish are eaten liberally on the Atkins diet. They include: tuna, salmon, sole, trout, flounder, sardines, herring, chicken, turkey, duck, goose, Cornish hen, quail, pheasant, oysters, mussels, lobster, squid, clams, beef, bacon, pork, veal, venison and ham. Cheese

Two to three cups a day of vegetables are permitted and encouraged for their high fiber content. These include: Alfalfa sprouts, mushrooms, arugula, endive, parsley, escarole, bok choy, peppers, celery, fennel, radicchio, chicory, jicama, radishes, chives, lettuces, cucumber, mache and sorrel.


Fats and Oils


Butter is allowed. Margarine should be avoided. Olive oil, canola oil, walnut oil, grapeseed oil, soybean oil, sesame, safflower and sunflower oil are premitted


Beverages








Water is a must, and drinking at least eight ounces a day is encouraged. Also clear broths, bullion, club soda, two to three teaspoons a day of heavy or light cream, decaffeinated coffee and tea, diet sodas (with Splenda), herbal tea, and lemon and lime juice may be taken freely.


Alcohol, Friut, Grains


Alcohol, grains, and fruit (with the exception of melons) are not permitted in the first two weeks on the Atkins Diet. After that time, they are introduced in limited quantities.

Get Over Public Anxiety

It is important then to learn some ways to confront public anxiety and rid ourselves of the fears that could potentially hold us back from being able to enjoy the moment.

1. Decipher the difference between worry and anxiety. Anxiety is when you worry about an issue more than a small amount. If you are constantly uncomfortable and concerned about a certain situation then that would be considered anxiety not simple worry.


2. Acknowledge the reasons you are anxious. It is always helpful to know why you are anxious because you can not confront an issue you don't know about. Most people will be able to invalidate these reasons on their own after the problems are identified.


3. Seek help and support. Sometimes anxiety can be sign of health issues and should be reported to a doctor. It is also important to have some type of peer support system in place to relate to and for honest feedback.


4. Know your limits. Different situations have separate affects on everyone. Learn what your boundaries are and define them sharply in each anxious situation. For instance, if you are fine with sitting in a crowded movie theater but not fine with sitting in a crowded cafeteria the distinction should be observed and made note of.








5. Push your limits. In order to defeat your fear, you will have to face it and survive. This does not always mean victory in the short term but rather a more condensed lesson of deal with your anxiety and slowly rid yourself of it. It is always best to have a gauge of how well you are doing and to constantly challenge yourself to do better.

1. Get sufficient sleep on a regular schedule. Keep your blood sugar stable by opting for complex carbohydrates, such as vegetables and whole grains, rather than simple carbohydrates, like white bread and candy. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as well as artificial coloring and flavoring, which can also cause mood swings in some people.








3. Try mood-regulating natural remedies. Calm anxiety with chamomile, lemon balm or valerian root tea. Lift low moods and soothe irritability with St. John's wort. Another herb for agitation and anger is lycopodium, a traditional homeopathic remedy. For manic moods, homeopaths sometimes use tarentula hispanica. If your wild moods are related to female hormone changes, try chaste berry, red raspberry, black cohosh or sarsaparilla.

Create Balance For Vata Ayurveda Mindbody Type

Ayurveda means “science of life” and refers to the 5,000-year-old science that began in India when rishi (sages) compiled guidelines regarding diet, treatment of disease and illness. There are three mind-body types, or doshas. Vata represent ether and space and is easy to identify in an individual. Vatas are thin, wiry, slender with irregular appetites and irregular digestion. Dryness is a theme: dry hair, brittle nails, dry skin and constipation. Movement is their motto. Talkative and in motion, a Vata can be a whirling dervish.


Instructions


1. Maintain a regular routine. Eat at the same times and do not skip meals! Vatas’ changing appetites may find them ravenous one day and actually forgetting to eat the next. Engrossed in a project, Vatas’ realize they are late and hurry out, anxious to not be late. All the movement and lack of nourishment would result in more worry and anxiety.








2. Favor foods that are moist, sweet, salty or sour. Eating easily digested cooked foods such as steamed seasonal vegetables, whole grains with ghee or flax seed oil and dulse (seaweed) is a Vata-pacifying meal. It combines all 5 tastes of Ayurveda: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and astringent. Do not eat an entirely raw food diet: this is Vata-aggravating. Fresh fruits are fine, but better yet are poached apples in maple syrup drizzed with low-fat yogurt. Comfort foods are those that will ground a Vata’s flightiness.


3. Exercise moderately. Thin by nature and not very muscular, vatas may tire easily or allow their active minds to keep them busy. Yoga, mellow biking, walking and other non-competitive activities are appropriate. Exercise of all types releases endorphins and provides an outlet for the self-critical Vata to decompress without exercising to exhaustion.


4. Cover the head and belly. Vatas in high wind or a cool room can be easily distracted. Cover the head with a scarf, hat or baseball cap in summer. Do not expose the belly, no matter how fashionable. Drape a sarong around yourself at the beach or wear a poncho. Vatas often complain of cold hands and feet: covering the head and belly in all kinds of weather traps body heat.


5. Go to sleep at the same time every night. Activated by their constantly inquisitive minds, Vatas can get a second wind at 10 p.m. and find themselves still alert and awake at 2 a.m.—only to crash at the office during a 10 a.m. meeting. Getting adequate rest consistently grounds this Vata chaos.


6. Write things down. Vatas are the friendly, energetic, scatter-brained people we know and love. Make shopping lists and outline tasks at work to not let Vata forgetfulness make you stressed. Memory is not a reflection of intelligence--Vatas are often extremely bright, they just can’t remember to buy bread at the market until it is written on a piece of paper.


7. Practice non-judgment. When Vatas become imbalanced, it is easy for them to turn their considerable intelligence into a laser beam of critical evaluation onto themselves. Inject a sense of humor and playfulness instead. Make a list of "fun ambitions" such as learning crochet or play tennis.


8. Make time for play; allow the inner child to roam. Volunteer to work with children or with other big children like yourself. Create community service projects and invite friends to join you. This gives Vatas a perspective that brings them out of self-critical behavior and allows others to benefit from their talents and sharp wit.


9. Provide time for quiet reflection. Meditation can be simply sitting comfortably with eyes closed for 15 to 20 minutes, twice a day. Easily pulled into activity, Vatas are well-served by practicing pratyahara: drawing their finely tuned senses inside, to recharge. Cover the eyes with a sleep mask if you are easily distracted during meditation.

Practice Kundalini Yoga Breathing Patterns

Kundalini yoga incorporates several breathing practices called pranayama. Pranayama's root, prana is Sanskrit for life as well as breath, which is today breath is life. We're all born taking breaths from the belly, but most adults take shallow breaths from the chest. Chest breathing doesn't give us adequate oxygen, which can lead to several ailments. By practicing kundalini yoga breathing patterns you can greatly improve your health.








Instructions


Prepare to Breathe


1. Practice your kundalini yoga breathing patterns in a room that is around 70-degrees Fahrenheit. Practicing in a room that is either too hot or too cold can have an adverse affect. It is also important to make sure your air is clean and free from smoke, chemicals or other harmful pollutants.


2. Clear your nostrils as much as possible before practicing your kundalini yoga breathing patterns since you will be breathing through your nose only.


3. Breath evenly and deeply. If your breath becomes short or labored as you change poses, stop and get into a comfortable pose, such as the lotus, corpse or tree pose, until your breath becomes even and natural again.


Breathing Techniques


4. Use your diaphragm to breath deep into the lungs. This is called abdominal or belly breathing.


5. Bring more oxygen into your bloodstream by using the dirgha pranayama or the complete breath. This breathing technique fills your lungs completely and lightly stretches them to increase your lung capacity. Try this technique in the corpse or lotus pose. Place your hands on your ribcage so you are aware of each breath.


6. Alternate breathing through each nostril, closing one at a time with your thumb and forefinger. This brings balance to both sides of your brain.


7. Fill your lungs completely with air, and force it out. Create a rhythm with this breath of fire, and you can feel the stress leave your body.

Cesium Chloride Cancer Treatment

Cancer is a debilitating disease that affects any tissue in the body. Scientists are still unsure treat cancer without the terrible side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Cesium chloride is an alternative treatment used to kill the tumors by increasing their pH level. Er Triage Procedures

If you find yourself in a life or death situation and need immediate medical attention, you will be transported to a hospital's emergency room. Split-second decisions can mean the difference between life and death. When arriving at the emergency room, your first stop will be known as "triage". In triage, your situation will be evaluated and the next steps will be taken to initiate your medical care.


Arrival


Upon arrival at triage, the patient will be immediately evaluated. The intake nurse will ask what the major problems are and take down all the necessary paperwork. This includes identification cards and insurance information. At this time, a decision will be made as to the severity of the situation and how quickly the patient needs to be moved to see an emergency room doctor.


Vital Signs/Evaluation








The severity of injuries or sickness takes top priority in triage. A patient who arrives with a broken ankle may have to wait in triage while a victim of a gunshot wound in rushed back to the emergency room. Diagnosis

Types Of Squamous Cell Skin Cancer

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a cancer that develops in the squamous cells of the skin. Squamous cells are in the tissue that is the surface of the skin, but they are also found in the lining of any hollow organs in the body, and even in the respiratory and digestive tracts. Though SCC usually occurs on the skin, it can occur on any of the above that contain squamous cells.

Treatment

Once diagnosed, however, there are effective treatments. One is called curettage and desiccation. The carcinoma is cut out and then an electrical current is applied to control bleeding and kill the remaining cells. Other options are radiation therapy, surgical removal, cryosurgery (freezing the carcinoma), and topical creams designed to attack cancer cells.
