Obesity & Lung Disease

Obese individuals are at risk for numerous medical conditions including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, arthritis and cancer. However, recent research, such as the long-standing and ongoing Nurses' Health Study, suggests that a link between respiratory disease and obesity also exists.

Obesity

When an individual's body mass index (BMI) is greater than 30, he or she is considered obese. Obesity is a term used to describe excessive, unhealthy body weight. This differs from the terms "overweight," which is used to describe individuals with a BMI greater than 25, but still lower than 30, and "morbidly obese," which refers to individuals who have a BMI greater than 40 or are more than 100 pounds overweight. It is estimated that 1 billion people around the world are overweight or obese. Treatment for obesity includes weight reduction, usually through diet and exercise.

Lung Disease

Lung disease is a collective term referring to problems and diseases associated with the respiratory system, such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, sleep apnea, tuberculosis, pneumonia and other lung-related or breathing issues. Presently, lung disease is the number three cause of death in America and the leading cause of death in infants and children under the age of 1.

Obesity's Effect on Respiratory Function

The accumulation of body fat due to a higher BMI impairs breathing in obese individuals and cause weakness in respiratory muscles. Specifically, the demand on the respiratory muscles is greater due to the excess body weight, while the respiratory muscles capacity to generate tension is smaller, also due to the excess weight. This results in an imbalance of cardiorespiratory fitness.

Asthma and Obesity

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airway and commonly seen in obese individuals. According to Paula J. Anderson, M.D., from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, leptin may explanation with many obese individuals are also diagnosed with asthma. Leptin levels are high in obese and asthma patients and weight loss helps control leptin levels. Additionally, fat tissues produce inflammatory mediators. This understanding suggests there may be an immunologic link between obesity and asthma. Additionally, a Norwegian study lasting 21 years followed 135,000 subjects to determine whether there was a link between asthma and obesity. In the study, men with a BMI over 25 were at risk for asthma by 10 percent for every BMI unit increase. Women with a BMI over 25 were also at risk, by 7 percent, for every BMI unit increase. At the end of the study, researchers concluded a connection between asthma and obesity exists and that the incidence of asthma is related to preexisting obesity and not diet, exercise or smoking.

COPD and Obesity

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD for short, is a collective term referring to both chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD is characterized by limited airflow that is not fully reversible. COPD patients tend to have sedentary lifestyles which can contribute to obesity. Obese and sedentary individuals are also at risk for a loss of muscle mass which contributes to COPD-related deaths. Additionally, COPD is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is often seen in conjunction with obesity.

Prevent Mouth Cancer

Prevent Mouth Cancer

Cancer of the mouth, or oral cancer, refers to cancer that occurs in the tissues of the mouth that include the tongue, lips, gums and cheeks. Mouth cancer is one of the most serious cancers, but is also one of the most preventable. With only a few known major risk factors, oral cancer is one of the rare cancers that people can avoid by making good choices about diet and the use of tobacco and alcohol.

Instructions

Know the Risk Factors for Mouth Cancer

1. Recognize that the use of tobacco is by far the greatest risk factor for oral cancer. Do not use chewing tobacco, cigarettes, cigars or pipes if you want to prevent mouth cancer.

2. Do not put yourself at risk for mouth cancer by consuming large amounts of alcohol. Drinking large quantities of alcoholic beverages is associated with increased risk for mouth cancer.

3. Know that age and gender can also be correlated with the risk of developing oral cancer. The risk of getting cancer of the mouth increases in people over the age of 45, and the cancer occurs more commonly in men than in women.

4. Be aware that exposure to the sun can be a risk factor when it comes to contracting cancers on the lips.

Take Other Measures to Prevent Mouth Cancer

5. Use lip balms with UV protection to lower your risk. In addition to avoiding the major risks associated with tobacco and alcohol use, protect yourself by using sunscreen on and around your lips.

6. Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and avoid eating foods high in fats and sugars.

7. Have your doctor and dentist check for signs and symptoms of mouth cancer during regular checkups and physicals, especially after the age of 45.

Clean A Tacoma Trd Inlet Air Filter

The Tacoma's Toyota Racing Development (TRD) inlet air filter is connected to the air intake. This filter cleans the air before it enters the engine and mixes with the gas. If the air filter is dirty, less air will enter the engine and the engine will perform poorly. The air filter can be found on the driver's side toward the front of the engine compartment.

Instructions

1. Remove the two or four screws securing the cover to the air intake box using the screwdriver. Pull the cover off the box and set it on top of the engine.

2. Pull the air filter from the box. Nothing secures the filter to the box. It's just resting on the edge of the air intake box.

3. Tap the filter on the ground to knock out any large pieces of debris. Vacuum the filter on both sides and in between the edges. Vacuum the filter until all the dirt and debris have been removed. Replace the filter and the cover in the reverse order that you removed them.

Treat Sores With Essential Oils

There are over 200 different conditions and illnesses that can cause sores on the human body. That makes it extremely probable that a person will have sores at least one in his or her lifetime. Sores are never attractive and are better when they're on their way off of our body. In about two weeks, a healthy person will be able to get rid of most sores, but with the help of some essential oils, that process can be sped up.

Instructions

1. Wash the sore with soap and water. You don't want to scrub the sore, so just emerge it in a mixture of soap and water.

2. Pat the area dry with a towel. Once again, do not rub or you risk agitating the sore.

3. Take vitamin C tablets to begin the healing process. The best kind to get is called ascorbyl-palmotate, which is a fat-soluble vitamin C that will stay in the body longer. Vitamin C is responsible for building collagen in the body that will repair wounds and sores.

4. Apply tea tree oil to the sore a couple times a day. Tea tree oil is a great all-around product that will kill bacteria and fungus as well as bugs that may be attracted to the sore (depending on how bad it is).

5. Apply apricot oil a couple times a day. This has three different kinds of healthy omega fatty acids. It will help reduce the irritation the sore causes.

Raise My Core Body Temp With A Heating Pad

Raise My Core Body Temp With a Heating Pad

Your core body temperature is the temperature at which your body's internal systems and organs function at their best. Normally, your body regulates its own temperature, maintaining a constant range. There are instances in which your body temperature may get too low, such as prolonged exposure to cold outdoor temperatures, severe trauma, shock or drug and alcohol abuse. A low core body temperature is extremely dangerous and requires medical attention, but if you are unable to reach a medical facility quickly, you can use a heating pad in the meantime to help raise it.

Instructions

1. Wrap the heating pad in a towel and plug it in. Turn it to low heat.

2. Place the heating pad on the upper abdominal area, and wrap yourself in blankets.

3. Increase the heating pad temperature gradually, moving up to medium 20 minutes after placing it on your body, and then to high after 30 minutes. According to "Survive Outdoors," it is important to raise your body temperature at a slow, safe rate.

4. Check the temperature of the pad and your body with your bare hand every 20 minutes, staying covered as much as possible while doing so. If your skin starts to turn red and feels quite hot, you could experience a burn from the pad. If you have someone there with you, it is best to have them check it for you, as your hands could still be experiencing low temperatures which will cause you to not accurately feel external temperatures.

5. Keep the heating pad on as long as it takes you to warm up, but if you do not notice any improvement within 2 hours, seek medical attention.

What Are Some Natural Treatments For Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome--also known as Kborn's syndrome--causes cramps, a feeling like one needs to move legs, jumpiness, numbness, a pins-and-needles type feeling that something is moving under the leg, and leg thrashing. Usually, these uncomfortable feelings are experienced deep in the calf, though many people also report discomfort in the arms, trunk and genitals. Doctors do not know the cause of this condition but believe it might be related to a problem in the brain or spinal cord. Several natural treatments can alleviate symptoms.

Beneficial Herbal Treatments

Suggested dosages of herbs and pharmaceutical agents are both determined by one of their most important pharmacological properties, therapeutic range. Therapeutic range is the smallest dose that produces any medicinal effect to the largest dose safe for consumption. Herbs are generally non-toxic, and overdose or severe side effects are unlikely. However, stick to suggested amounts since taking more than directed is unlikely to produce additional benefit and can result in negative side effects.

California poppy with cordyalis prevents muscle spasms, relieves pain and induces sleep. Take as directed on the label. Kava relaxes the muscles and sedates the central nervous system. Take 60 to 120 milligrams daily. Passion Flower tea relaxes muscles and induces sleepiness. Take one cup two to three hours before going to sleep. Rooibos tea alleviates spasms and has a soothing effect on the nervous system. It is also beneficial for general pain. Take as directed on the label. Valerian sedates muscles and decreases the time required to fall asleep. Take 50 to 100 milligrams daily one hour before bedtime.

Other Suggestions

A combined calcium/magnesium supplement helps calm the nerves. It is most effective if taken before bedtime. Take as directed on the label.

Avoid caffeine in all its forms.

Do not smoke because it restricts blood flow to the legs.

Iron supplements may alleviate the condition, but get tested for iron levels before starting this treatment.

Stress can also aggravate the condition.

Treat Diabetes Successfully

Treat Diabetes Successfully

Diabetes seems to be a known problem we have in America. This year, it was reported that 23.6 million people(adults and children) have diabetes. Diabetes occurs when your body does not produce enough insulin. There's two different types. Type 1, which means the body is not producing insulin. Type 2 is where cells are not producing enough insulin. Type 2 is much more common, in which that many Americans suffer from this form of diabetes.

Instructions

1. Know the symptoms. Symptoms of diabetes can come from urinating quite often, increased fatigues, constant hunger and thirst. Also a sudden lost in weight, without much exercise or healthy form of eating even. Those who struggle with weight, particularly when it comes to eating a lot, they're at high risk for diabetes. I would get regular check ups with a doctor, to see if you are potentially entering into diabetes type 2.

2. Getting the right treatment. You should definitely seek a doctor. Listen to what they have to say carefully, and follow their directions. They'll give you a strict diet to follow and you definitely should. If you have type 1 diabetes, you'll most likely definitely have to take insulin shots. Take them on doctors orders, very important. Not getting these shots can kill you, or a loved child that has diabetes type 1.

3. Daily exercise. It's important to be active, when having diabetes. You want to minimize your blood sugar, and the best way to do that is exercising. Join a local gym, get a membership. Get a treadmill, something where you can shed off weight. When you're diagnosed with diabetes, losing weight is usually recommended. So get active!

4. Proper diet. You have to start eating properly. Obviously nothing with sugar when suffering from diabetes. Eat foods low in saturated fat, this is key. I'd recommend going with foods that are lower than 10% in saturated fat, if possible. Stay away from greasy foods. Avoid foods high in cholesterol at all times. Your doctor should give you similar instructions on the diet you should have. Make sure you are taking notes. If you don't have diabetes yet, then watch your intake in sugar.

5. Drink 8 glasses of cold water daily. Not only does it help you lose weight, it will help you resist the urge to want to constantly eat all the time. Drinking a lot of water can help fill you up and make you full a lot easier, after eating meals.

6. Taking the proper supplements. Virgin Coconut Oil helps well for those who have diabetes. It is okay to eat and use this oil. It will probably be recommended by your doctor even. It's a great oil, although high in fat calories, it does burn fat. There are good fats out there, even good saturated fats, which is mainly what Virgin Coconut Oil is made up of. Don't worry though, these are not bad saturated fats. Virgin Coconut Oil contains a rare medium-chain fatty acid, call lauric acid. This fatty acid is not in the foods that normally contain a high level, and unhealthy form of saturated fat.

Drinking Green tea(sugar free of course). Black tea is also pretty successful when fighting diabetes as well. Also do not forget to take Omega-3 as another supplement when fighting diabetes. Take all three of these supplements, and reek the benefits. Of course discuss this with your doctor first. It's always good to let your doctor know what you are taking and consult him or her about it.

What Kind Of Breathing Exercises Do Before Bed

Breathing exercises before bed can help relax your body and improve overall sleep.

A good night's rest is essential for overall health. You can be more productive and mentally sharp when you actually sleep at night. Although a sleep schedule and healthy bedtime habits are both necessary to get a good night's rest, breathing exercises at night can also aide in relaxing your body after a busy day and wind down for deep and reviving sleep.

Pre-Bedtime Breathing

This breathing exercise should be performed before getting into bed. Lay down on the floor on your back and spread your feet apart and place your hands by your sides. Turn your palms upward and close your eyes while concentrating on your entire body. Breathe in slowly as you try to relax every muscle starting at the top of your head, working your way down toward your toes. Your breathing should come from deep within your stomach and flow evenly in and out at a slow pace.

Relaxation Breathing

This breathing exercise should be performed when you first get into bed, but before laying down. While sitting up, take in a deep breath through your nose. Try to visualize the air you take in and picture it moving down your stomach and into your lungs. With each breath you take in, count to four. Slowly exhale through your lips and count to eight. You should not have fully exhaled before reaching the count of eight. Repeat the entire process six to 10 times. You should feel your shoulders and arms relax almost immediately with this exercise.

Deep Breathing in Bed

Deep breathing in bed will allow your body to relax prior to falling asleep. To do this, lie on your back in your bed. Relax your entire body slowly and inhale through the nose. Try to fill the lower part of your chest first and then allow the air to go into your middle and top portion of your chest. This entire process should last eight to 10 seconds. Hold your breath in for one or two seconds. Quietly release the air from your lungs and relax before doing the exercise again. If you begin to feel dizzy you are doing the exercise too quickly and need to slow it down. This exercise can be done until you fall asleep.

Controlled Breathing for Children

Breathing exercises with a bedtime routine can help your child get a restful night's sleep.

Teaching your child to relax through controlled breathing can be an essential relaxation technique that will help them sleep better at night. Have your child sit or lay down in their bed. Teach them to breathe in slowly and then exhale slowly. Using phrases such as "Breathe in the sunshine and let out the worries" can help your child feel more relaxed during the process. Teach your child to lay down and continue to breathe in and out slowly while allowing their mind to wander to a happy place. Whether that be a park, gymnasium or another location your child knows and loves.

How Is A Chemical Imbalance Diagnosed

Symptoms

A chemical imbalance is identified by the presence of too many or not enough chemicals in the brain that regulate mood and mental health symptoms. It can be difficult to determine if mental illness is caused by a chemical imbalance or if the disorder is situational. If a person is suffering with symptoms related to a mental health disorder like depression, anxiety or other extreme emotions or behavior, it is possible that he has a chemical imbalance that is causing the symptoms. The presence of mental health symptoms indicates a need for an appropriate diagnostic exam performed by a psychiatrist.

Diagnosis

A patient that is dealing with mental health symptoms will be interviewed by a psychiatrist. The clinical interview will involve a series of questions to determine the patient's mental status and the symptoms he is experiencing. The psychiatrist may wish to interview any family members that are available to get a more complete picture of the mental health condition. The psychiatrist may order blood work to determine a baseline for the patient so that if medications are necessary, they can be regulated and monitored appropriately. Most psychiatrists will make a clinical diagnosis and try medications to treat the symptoms. A psychiatrist will not usually order neurological testing to determine if a chemical imbalance is responsible but will use a trial and error method with the medications to determine if the medications can treat the symptoms. Some psychiatrists may order additional psychological testing to help with the diagnosis.

Treatment

If a chemical imbalance is present, then it is likely that medications will be necessary in order to see an improvement in the mental health condition. The chemicals in the brain like serotonin and dopamine are responsible for mood and can be artificially created to restore the brain to the appropriate functioning levels. Medication used in conjunction with therapy can show improvement in the symptoms. A person suffering with a chemical imbalance may feel like giving up or feel like his condition is hopeless, but with proper treatment he will eventually see an improvement in the symptoms and lead a normal life.

Natural Treatments For Rls To Calm Legs

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a condition that causes your legs to become agitated or to move on their own, usually at night. Exhaustion is often the worst side effect. Many people suffering from RLS are wary of using conventional medicines to treat the condition, so they opt for natural treatments. If you wish to use a natural treatment, you must have patience as you narrow down which method works to reduce or eliminate your RLS symptoms.

Iron

Increase your intake of iron. Many doctors first attempt to cure RLS by increasing a patient's daily iron intake by taking a supplement or by eating iron-rich foods. You may be given a blood test to assess your current iron levels. It may also take several weeks of tweaking your iron supplementation and dietary levels to see if a lack of iron is contributing to your RLS symptoms.

Abstain from Caffiene, Tobbaco and Alcohol

Remove caffeine, tobacco products and alcohol from your diet. These products are thought to affect patients' anxiety levels. RLS sufferers may have issues with stress that can exacerbate their RLS symptoms.

Chiropractic Treatment

Visit a chiropractor who can determine if your RLS is caused by a pelvic instability. X-rays and a general exam may determine if chiropractic visits have the potential to reduce or eliminate your RLS symptoms.

Accupuncture Therapy

Visit an acupuncturist to determine if needle therapy may help. An acupuncturist will evaluate your symptoms and determine if they warrant stimulation or calming of the nerves involved with your RLS.

Folic Acid Supplementation

Studies have shown that some RLS sufferers are lacking in folic acid. This is also a common genetic trait. If one of your parents had RLS, you have a higher chance of inheriting the syndrome. Your family doctor or endocrinologist may prescribe 30 mg to 70 mg of folic acid as treatment.

What Are The Benefits Of Star Flower Oil

Starflower oil (also known as borage oil) has been used medicinally for many centuries; it can alleviate symptoms of many ailments because of high levels of gamma linoleic acid (GLA), a nutritious fatty acid.

Heart and Blood Benefits

Starflower oil promotes healthy circulation, which helps lower blood pressure and promote heart health. It can also help regulate cholesterol levels, and prevent cholesterol from building up in arteries.

Skin Issues

The fatty acids in starflower oil promote healthy skin, hair and nails, and minimize discoloration. Also, starflower oil can help with skin issues such as acne, psoriasis, rosacea and eczema.

Joint and Nerve Issues

Starflower oil is an anti-inflammatory that can help with joint problems like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis; the oil can also reduce pain, swelling and joint damage. Finally, starflower oil also promotes healthy brain functioning, limiting damage from neurological diseases.

Dosage

Starflower oil can be found at most pharmacies and health food stores in either capsules, gel caps, or as an oil; the maximum recommended dosage is 1000mg per day, as too much can be toxic.

Warnings

Starflower oil may cause mild headaches, nausea and indigestion, which can be reduced by taking it with food. Certain people should not take starflower oil, including those with liver problems and epilepsy; speak with your doctor before starting any supplement.

What Is Tonic Stuttering

Although no miracle, overnight cure exists, stuttering can be treated.

Previously attributed to psychological and emotional causes, stuttering is a speech disorder most likely caused by any of four factors: genetics, childhood development issues, brain physiology and domestic influences. There is debate about whether subtypes of stuttering exist, says The Stuttering Foundation.

Stuttering

Sometimes called stammering, this communication defect manifests as a repetition of parts of words --- often the beginning --- or hesitation between words.

Tonic vs. Clonic Stuttering

Pauses or hesitations between words are called tonic stuttering, where the person appears to be struggling to form the word he wishes to say. It is similar to a tonic spasm, which is prolonged and considered fairly set in its intensity. Clonic stuttering is the repetition of letters or sounds within words. Clonic spasms are quick and repeated, presenting in an on-off manner, according to bookrags.com.

Treatment

Although no miracle cure for stuttering exists, there are methods that have proven successful at improving fluency in sufferers. Therapy, drugs and electronic devices have helped some overcome the speech condition, says The Stuttering Foundation, but they are not an overnight process.

When To Take Mirapex

Mirapex (pramiprexole) is a medication used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). Mirapex works by stimulating the dopamine receptors in the motor centers of the brain, and it can have some troubling side effects depending upon when and how it is taken.

Mirapex for Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a condition characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs such as burning, itching or crawling that create an irresistible urge to move the legs. Symptoms occur during periods of inactivity or rest and are more troubling at night because of sleep disturbance. The cause of RLS is unknown but it may be related to loss of dopamine activity.

For treatment of RLS, Mirapex should be taken 2 or 3 hours before bedtime to relieve nighttime symptoms and promote healthy sleep. Mirapex for RLS should only be taken at night. If a nighttime dose is missed, it should not be taken in the morning and should not be doubled the following evening. The most common side effects for RLS patients taking Mirapex are nausea and daytime sleepiness, but these usually disappear as a person becomes used to taking it.

Mirapex for Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder caused by the loss of dopamine activity in the motor centers of the brain. PD symptoms include tremor or trembling, rigidity or stiffness, bradykinesia or slowness of movement, and impaired balance and coordination.

Mirapex should be taken three times a day for Parkinson's disease. Because a larger amount of Mirapex is taken for Parkinson's disease, there are more side effects. The most common side effects include nausea, dizziness, sleepiness, insomnia, constipation, hallucinations and weakness. If a dose of Mirapex is missed, do not attempt to catch up by doubling a dose---simply take the next scheduled dose as normal.

Other Effects of Mirapex

Whether Mirapex is taken for Parkinson's disease or RLS, some patients have reported sudden dizziness and an irresistible urge to sleep during the day while taking Mirapex. It is important that driving and other activities requiring alertness be limited until one knows how Mirapex will affect them. Other medications that cause drowsiness should be avoided if possible.

Other patients have reported feeling faint when standing up, so it is important to stand slowly after sitting or lying down to avoid a sudden drop in blood pressure. Compulsive behaviors such as gambling, eating and shopping, along with hallucinations such as hearing voices or seeing objects, have become a problem for some, and any of these symptoms should be immediately reported to a physician.

Mirapex may be taken with food to reduce symptoms of nausea. Mirapex should not be taken by those who are allergic or intolerant to pramiprexole and should not be taken during pregnancy, as animal studies have shown possible birth disorders. The patient's physician should be told of any other medication being taken to avoid possible drug interactions involving the kidneys, blood pressure and nervous system. When stopping Mirapex therapy, the medication may need to be tapered down slowly and not discontinued suddenly.

Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurvedic medicine utilizes a variety of products and techniques to cleanse the body and restore balance to its systems. It is a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM ).

History

Ayurveda is one of the oldest known systems of medicine, beginning several thousand years ago in India. The term is composed of the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (knowledge or science).

Significance

The practice of Ayurveda is based upon two principles: First, to prolong life and promote good health, and second, to rid the body of disease and dysfunction.

Benefits

The accomplishment of these two principles achieves a balance between mind, body and spirit. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, this balance could lead to perfect health.

Theories/Speculation

In Ayurdedic medicine, disease is considered to be an imbalance in one or more of the patient's doshas. According to the Ayurvedic system of medicine, the basic life force in the body is called prana. The five basic elements of earth, air, water, fire and ether also contain prana---all of which interact. These elements control all bodily functions, and are classified in three main categories called doshas. The three doshas are vata, pitta and kapha.

Considerations

Each person's body is a specific blend of these three doshas, called their prakriti. Any Ayurvedic treatment must be created specifically for that person.

Origin Of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a form of mental illness whose sufferers experience extreme highs and lows. Typically, you will see someone go from mania (which can manifest as talkativeness, high energy or elation) to depression (which can present itself as hopelessness, sadness or worthlessness) and back again over time. As with most any condition, the appearance of these extreme mood swings will vary. Some people will experience fairly dramatic shifts while others will stay on one side of the spectrum for long periods of time. That being said, people who live with a bipolar disorder do have periods of what many people would refer to as "normal" moods. But, it's really the swings that are indicative of this disorder. Due to the overall nature of the illness, the origins can be hard to detect and will vary from person to person.

Chemical Imbalance

One of the most predominant beliefs is that bipolar disorder is a consequence of the brain experiencing a chemical imbalance. No matter the person, each of our brains is filled with neurotransmitters. When they come out of balance chemically, as in the case of norepinephrine, which plays a role in our attention and reaction to things, they can cause mania or depression. In mania, the chemical levels have swung quite high, and, in depression, the chemical levels have swung rather low.

Emotional Stress

Another belief in the origin of bipolar disorder is emotional stress, which is characterized as a person's inability to cope or respond in an appropriate manner to some outside force. This could be an event in your distant past or something that happened at the time of the illness. Basically, a person would not possess healthy coping mechanisms, and the stress could then induce the disorder.

Genetics

According to the Mayo Clinic, there is also the belief that heredity plays a key role in the origin of bipolar disorder. Often, a person who is living with a bipolar disorder will have other family members with this same mental illness. This doesn't mean that simply having a relative that suffers from this disorder will guarantee a diagnosis; it just makes you predisposed to the illness.

Drug Use

Another possible cause for bipolar disorder is the use of narcotics, and this doesn't have to be prolonged abuse. Certain people have suffered from an imbalance due to cocaine, speed and other illegal drugs. Since these substances generally affect the function of your brain, there is the potential that it can chemically alter the way in which the neurotransmitters work.

Death of Brain Cells Theory

According to the Department of Medicine at Duke University, some researchers believe that bipolar disorder is a result of certain cells dying within the brain. These cells are said to be specifically linked to the management of a person's emotional state and mood. When the function of these cells is no longer in operation, a person would then no longer have control over their emotions, manifesting in extreme swings of mood. However, this is just a theory of this disorder's origin, and more studies would need to be applied to validate this concept.

The Side Effects Of Generic Pravastatin

The Side Effects of Generic Pravastatin

Pravastatin is classified as an enzyme blocker, sometimes called a "statin." It is prescribed to help lower triglycerides (fats) and cholesterol in adults and children age eight and older. Generic pravastatin side effects will be experienced differently by each patient and some patients may not experience any. However, it is important to know what they are so the patient can identify those that are serious and obtain medical attention if necessary.

Common Side Effects

The common side effects of generic pravastatin (and the approximate percentage of patients that experience them) include nausea and vomiting (7.3 percent), the flu (2.4 percent), common cold (7 percent), muscle pain (2.7 percent), headache (6.2 percent), heartburn or indigestion (3.5 percent), diarrhea (6.2 percent), gas (3.3 percent), unexplained rash (4 percent), fatigue (3.8 percent), dizziness (3.3 percent) and constipation (4 percent).

According to eMedTV, more than one percent of patients can also experience joint pain, vision problems (such as double or blurry vision), stomach pain and other pain, and muscle cramps.

Serious Side Effects

Certain side effects if generic pravastatin are considered serious and should be reported to the patient's doctor immediately. According to eMedTV, these include muscle pain/weakness/tenderness (especially when accompanied by feeling ill or a fever), memory loss, muscle aches, an indication of liver damage (yellow eyes/skin, dark urine, increased liver enzymes and pain in the upper right abdomen).

Rare Side Effects

The rare side effects of this medication occurred in less than 1 percent of patients. It is not completely clear whether these are associated with pravastain or something else, according to eMedTV. However, patients should be aware of them and they include dry skin, impotence, hair loss, insomnia, sexual problems, taste changes and vertigo (feels like spinning/whirling).

Chinese Herbs To Cure Ovarian Cysts

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as practiced today is more than 2,000 years old. There have been many innovations over the years,. Today, Chinese herbs come from all around the world, but the basics are still the same. Yin and yang describe natural laws that your body will follow, and there are Chinese herbs to cure ovarian cysts that are particularly successful.

Cysts

Little packets or cysts of fluid are can appear frequently on the ovaries. Many women have them and don't even know it because there are usually no symptoms. The symptoms experienced by some women are pains in the lower abdomen and a feeling of pressure. Sometimes they experience pain during intercourse as well as during menstrual periods. TMC ovarian cysts are the result of three things: phlegm, dampness and blood stasis. When the spleen is not converting food into energy (Chi) and blood, the person does not get proper nutrition from their food. They get tired, gain weight and retain water. The water coalesces into phlegm, which, in turn, becomes lumps that are cysts of various kinds, including ovarian. Chinese herbs work on the underlying cause which improves the overall health of the person as well as removing the cysts.

China

In a case report on using Chinese herbs to remedy ovarian cysts, five Chinese doctors wrote about the case of a patient (female) with ongoing pain in the lower abdominal area for roughly a year from a cyst in the ovaries. The cyst was clearly described and measured. The formula consisted of simple Chinese herbs, Penyan Kang for healing pelvic inflammation, which was given to the patient orally for a 90-day time frame. When the treatment was finished, the patient said that the pain was gone. The sonogram that was taken following the treatment showed that the cyst that was seen and recorded during the first visit, had disappeared. No irregularity was evident and there were no side effects from the herbal treatment. This is just one case where Chinese herbs to cure ovarian cysts was successful.

United States

Another case study by Dr. Wei Liu of The American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine cured a 39-year-old woman of nine ovarian cysts. With Chinese medicinal herbs, nutritional changes and acupuncture, all the cysts were gone. She had previously tried birth control pills as prescribed by her doctor, but they didn't have any effect. That is why she turned to Chinese herbs for total healing.

Chinese Herbs

Today Chinese herbs come from all over the world. According to Dr. John R. Lee, too much estrogen in the body is the main reason for most women's health troubles, including ovarian cysts. There are numerous herbal recommendations to treat this estrogen imbalance, which are also found in TCM, but here is a sampling of the more potent herbs: black cohosh, milk thistle, evening primrose oil, ginseng, peony, red clover, burdock and rhubarb. All of these herbs are very powerful Chinese herbs that can help cure ovarian cysts.

Detox From Alcohol Naturally

Millions of people worldwide consume alcoholic beverages occasionally or on a daily basis. These beverages contain the compound ethanol, or alcohol, which is known to have psychoactive properties. Aside from psychoactive properties, alcohol can induce liver damage and disturb your body's metabolism, ultimately damaging the function of your other major organs. Fortunately, liver damage is reversible by abstinence and detoxification. By employing all the natural remedies below, you can successfully detox your liver from alcohol.

Instructions

1. Consume dandelion capsules. This flower is made of the potent compound inulin, which aids your liver in removing alcohol toxins from your body. Take two capsules after meals every day.

2. Take milk thistle tablets. The milk thistle is made of silymarin, which is a potent phytochemical. It speeds up your liver function, thereby removing unwanted toxins caused by alcohol intake. Take one tablet twice a day with food.

3. Consume turmeric powder. This common spice contains three active ingredients: COX-2, LOX and Curcumin. These enzymes act by stimulating your hepatic, or liver, cells to eliminate toxins. Add this spice to some of your dishes, and consume daily.

4. Eat a sufficient amount of artichokes. This vegetable is made of cyanin, a potent phytochemical responsible for liver-cell regeneration and protection. It also acts by detoxifying any alcohol residue left in your body. Add a cup of artichokes to your diet every day.

5. Take siberian ginseng, or eleuthero, extract. Siberian ginseng contains eleutherosides, which are compounds that assist your liver in flushing out toxins left over from alcohol consumption. You can purchase Siberian ginseng at a Korean or Chinese supermarket. Drink two bottles every day.

Foods That Are High In Iron & B12

It is a little known fact that vitamin B12 and iron go hand in hand. If you are deficient in one, you can typically become deficient in the other fairly easily. A lack of vitamin B12 can lead to fatigue, heart palpitations, dizziness, hair loss and anemia. An iron deficiency can be caused by different types of anemia. It is important to make sure that you are eating foods that are both high in vitamin B12 and high in iron.

Organ Meats

Organ meats are very high in vitamin B12. Organs such as liver and kidneys are particularly high.

Oily Fish

Another great source for vitamin B12 is in oily fish. Salmon, snapper and halibut are all great sources of vitamin B12.

Beans

Beans are very high in iron and are easily incorporated into the diet. Beans like kidney beans, soybeans and garbanzo beans are particularly high in iron.

Seeds

Pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds are rich in iron. They make a great snack and can be packed and carried easily on a hike.

Doctor Approval

Make sure that eating foods rich in vitamin B12 and iron are appropriate for you by checking with your doctor. Some medicines react adversely to supplements of these two vitamins. Check with your doctor before you add any supplement to your diet.

How Does The Human Brain Work

Cognitive Modules

The human brain works by activating millions of thought cognitive modules. Thought cognitive modules may be dumb or intelligent, rational or emotional, ineffective or effective, some of these suitable or unsuitable; some genetically inherited, others being learned behavior modules. Examples of thought cognitive modules include those modules that recognize hunger and thirst, modules which allow your hands to maneuver accurately to make a basket in a basketball game, or modules that allow you to drive a vehicle. The brain also activates thought cognitive modules of jealousy, rage or depression, of which some modules may be both dysfunctional and dominate the thoughts; this is called a psychiatric disorder. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is merely a malfunctioning cognitive module that is overstressing the need to wash or clean the house unnecessarily.

Learned Modules

Throughout life, cognitive modules are continually being learned and stored in the brain's memory banks. Billions of synaptic connections assist in recall of stored cognitive modules. In the case of learned cognitive modules, behavior may change through an automobile accident, causing a dysfunction of that particular thought cognitive module, commonly known as a phobia. Inappropriate functioning of cognitive modules is evident in the case of child molesters, burglars, cannibals and killers, and other criminals who regard their behavior as rational and perfectly normal. Schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders are relevant to such cases of malfunctioning cognitive modules.

Unconscious Mind

The unconscious mind encompasses all cognitive modules, for example, on driving a car, do we consciously think about driving every second that we are actually behind the wheel? No. Our subconscious or unconscious mind takes over from the conscious mind by using its learned cognitive modules. This is proven by way of performing unconscious emergency maneuvers to avoid an accident. Another example is the thought that suddenly pops into your mind as to the realization that you can't remember driving for the past five miles.

The garnet symbolizes purity, friendship and faithfulness, according to Birthstones.org.

Famous Ties

Jewelry Supplier states the garnet symbolizes Judah, one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

History

According to Jewels For Me, garnets were once used medicinally, to increase strength and ward off several medical problems including blood disorders, heart palpitations and lung disease.

Types

The red garnet is most familiar, but garnets come in almost every shade, except blue.

Fun Fact

In addition to being January's birthstone, garnets are also the birthstone for Capricorns in astrology---those born from December 22 to January 21---and considered a lucky charm among all the zodiac signs, per Jewelry Supplier.

What Is The Gardasil Vaccine

Gardasil is a cervical cancer vaccine. It guards against four types of human papillomavirus (HPV), two of which cause the majority of cervical cancer cases. The other two types of HPV Gardasil protects against genital warts. Gardasil does not contain any live virus material, so there is no risk of getting HPV from the vaccine.

Warning

It is still possible to get cervical cancer after being vaccinated with Gardasil, as Gardasil does not protect against all types of HPV.

Age

Gardasil is recommended for females as young as 9 years old or before a girl is sexually active, because it is most effective before any exposure to HPV has taken place. However, it can still be given to sexually active females.

Injection Schedule

Gardasil is given in a series of three injections. The first dose can be any time you prefer, followed by a second dose 2 months after the first and a third dose 6 months after the first dose.

Side Effects

The most common side effects reported are pain, swelling, itching or bruising at the injection site, fainting, vomiting, nausea, fever, dizziness and headache. Possible allergies to the contents of the Gardasil vaccine, including yeast, should be discussed with your doctor.

What Is The Function Of A Support Group

If you are dealing with any type of challenging situation, you may find it helpful to attend a support group. There are many different types of support groups available. They can help you to cope with loss, a specific disease or illness, addiction or major life change. Support groups offer opportunities to connect with other individuals who can help you find coping skills to deal with your individual situation.

Providing Support From Others

The most important function of a good support group is to provide the opportunity to connect and share with others who are dealing with the same circumstances. It can help to talk or just listen to others who are also trying to find ways to cope. Since they are dealing with similar circumstances, they can really understand what you are living with.

Developing Coping Skills

Support groups are not designed to replace medical or professional counseling. However, sometimes just telling your story will encourage other members to offer coping skills. There may be someone in your group who has learned an effective technique to deal with similar circumstances.

Finding Unique Friendships

Another important function of a support group is the exchange of phone numbers among members who are interested in doing so. It is not a requirement of being in a support group. However, you may find it helpful to be able to call someone who understands, to help you through a crisis. Members can often do so without offering unsolicited advice.

Connecting You with Resources

Support group leaders often have access to local resources. Many support groups periodically invite speakers to address the group on local services that are available and helpful.

Getting Started

There are no general national or state agencies that list all types of support groups since there are so many different kinds. Look through the calendar listing of your local paper to see what support groups are located in your area. Check local hospitals or web pages dedicated to the specific condition or situation you are dealing with.

Human Pheromone Information

A couple in love

Pheromones are chemical substances produced by humans, animals and insects designed to stimulate others of the same species to induce a certain behavior.

Androstenol

Androstenol, discovered in the late 1970s by Dr. George Dodd, is a human pheromone that induces social interaction among members of the opposite sex.

Androstenone

Androstenone is a pheromone that makes men seem dominant, aggressive and competitive, but it doesn't encourage the male to stick to one female.

Androsterone

Androsterone is found in male urine. This pheromone gives women a sense that the male is able to protect her, provide for her and sends a message that he will be a good father.

Androstadienone or Androstadienol

Androstadienone or androstadienol is found in male sweat. It's detected by females through smell. A females want to be close and cuddle with a male that exhibits this pheromone.

Estratetraenol

Estratetraenol, found in female sweat, attracts men to women as the preceding pheromone attracts women to men.

Bombykol

Bombykol is the first pheromone discovered in 1953; it is secreted during female ovulation and sends signals to men from long distances, even at very low concentrations.

Peppermint Oil Vs Peppermint Extract

Peppermint is a wintertime standard that reminds many of the winter holiday season because of the delicious holiday treats such as candy canes and peppermint bark. However, peppermint is used for more than just holiday candy. It has been used for centuries by different cultures for its medicinal and culinary properties by ancient civilizations and modern societies alike. Two main versions of peppermint, peppermint oil and peppermint extract contain similar properties and are used for similar purposes.

Peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.)

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), peppermint is an herb that is a hybrid of water mint and spearmint. Peppermint leaves have been used for gastrointestinal disorders and other medicinal purposes. The whole leaf of the peppermint herb has been used as a flavoring for food and beverages as well as a garnishment for dishes.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is obtained via steam distillation from fresh peppermint leaves. Peppermint oil can be used in food as a flavoring or taken in capsule form to treat specific medical conditions. Peppermint oil naturally contains menthol, menthone and menthyl esters, and thus was found suitable for use in such products as toothpaste, chewing gum, cigarettes and shampoo. Peppermint is an essential oil, and as such it is potent, so only a small amount of oil is needed for many uses.

Peppermint Extract

Peppermint extract is the less potent derivative from the peppermint herb. It is extracted from peppermint oil via alcohol distillation and is less potent than its parent oil. The extract is mostly used in cooking to add a minty flavor to foods. A favorite during the winter season, peppermint extract is used to make baked goods and candies. As with peppermint oil, peppermint extract is also used in beauty products such as soaps and shampoos for its aromatic properties. Many people find the smell of peppermint pleasing and relaxing.

Medicinal Benefits

Both peppermint oil and peppermint extract are used for medicinal purposes. The menthol found in both the oil and extract is attributed to giving peppermint oil and peppermint extract their medicinal properties of reducing itching, inflammation and to sooth sore throat irritation. Peppermint oil has strong scientific evidence to support its use in treating coughs, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and tension headaches as well as being an antispasmodic for the colon, esophagus and intestines.

Warnings

Peppermint oil is four times as potent as peppermint extract and should only be used in small amounts. It is the low potency of peppermint extract that makes it more widely used for cooking. Peppermint oil is safe in small doses, however, allergic reactions, rashes, mouth sores, chemical burns, eye irritation and lung injury have been associated with peppermint oil use. Menthol, which is found in both the oil and extract, may be deadly and can possibly cause brain, skin and kidney damage. If inhaled, menthol can cause adverse reactions such as confusion, dizziness, nausea and muscle weakness.

Herbal Medicines To Lower High Blood Pressure

If your blood pressure is not high enough to be in the danger zone, and if you are working on diet and lifestyle changes to bring it down, using some herbal remedies may be worth a try. Some of these herbs act as blood thinners, so they should not be used if you are on anticoagulant medication without talking to your physician first. These also are not quick fixes, and may take several days to several weeks before you see results.

Garlic

Research published in a 2005 issue of "American Family Physician" indicated that eating one clove of garlic daily can lower high blood pressure.

Hawthorn

A study published in "The British Journal of General Practice" showed that hawthorn lowers high blood pressure in people with type 2 diabetes. Hawthorn appears to dilate blood vessels and strengthen the heart's pumping ability.

Rauwolfia Serpentina

A book by Kee Chang Huang called "The Pharmacology of Chinese Herbs" cites a 1999 Chinese study showing that Rauwolfia serpentina can quickly and significantly lower blood pressure.

Ayurvedic Considerations

Ayurvedic medicine views rauwolfia serpentina as a temporary intervention measure. Lifestyle and diet changes, along with hawthorn supplementation, are more effective as long-term treatment.

Arjuna

A 1997 study in "Indian Heart Journal" indicates that arjuna may lower high blood pressure by strengthening a weakened heart.

Become A Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor

Are you interested in pursuing a career in the substance-abuse field? While some states have the same requirements for education, licensure and experience, you will want to contact the state in which you plan to practice to ensure that you have the proper qualifications.

Instructions

Become a Licensed Chemical-Dependency Counselor

1. Contact your state counseling board. The state board regulates the practice of counseling in your state and is a good place to start to find out what you will need in order to become a licensed chemical-dependency counselor. Ask for the guidelines necessary to become licensed.

2. Identify an accredited school to receive your substance-abuse counseling education. Locate an accredited school to ensure that your school courses and internship hours will count toward licensure in your state. Write to potential schools and request information to find out about the program and the opportunities provided. To become a licensed chemical-dependency counselor, you will need a master's degree at a minimum before you can begin working on your counseling residency.

3. Begin your residency hours. You will need to complete a residency in the state in which you plan to practice. Most states require between 3,000 and 4.000 supervised hours in order to become licensed. Residencies can be completed at outpatient treatment centers, hospitals and other locations designed to give you direct client experience in substance-abuse counseling. Your school internship will count toward part of this residency.

4. Take the licensing exam. Each state requires clinicians to pass a licensing exam in order to begin practicing as a counselor. You can get study guides to prepare for these tests and should request information early to begin studying.

5. Pay your licensure fee.

6. Once you have received your license, you can begin practicing unsupervised. Most states require you to pay a license renewal fee monthly and receive continuing-education credits in order to retain your license each year.

Cerebral Glioblastoma Multiforme Tumor

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common tumor responsible for primary brain cancer; it is also the most aggressive. GBM and other primary brain cancers are rare. Treatments are available and will depend on factors like the location, symptoms and rate of growth.

Prognosis

GBM tumors grow very quickly. According to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, one out of every four patients with GBM will survive for two years. Your outlook is better if you are under age 45 and if all or a majority of the tumor can be removed through surgery.

Causes

Primary brain tumors are rare compared to other types of cancer, and the exact causes are unknown. Some mechanism is causing the cells to divide abnormally, resulting in a mass of damaged cells that turns into a tumor.

.

Symptoms

The symptoms you experience depend on the individual characteristics of the tumor. The following symptoms are common, but you might not experience all of them: headaches that become more frequent or severe; unexplained nausea or vomiting; vision problems; odd sensations in your arms or legs; trouble balancing, speaking or hearing; confusion; personality and behavior changes; and seizures

Risk Factors

While definitive causes for brain cancer have not been established, the medical community has determined certain risk factors that increase your chances of developing GBM.

GBM is more common in white people than African-Americans. Most primary brain tumors are found in people older than 45. Men are more vulnerable than women. Exposure to radiation and chemicals can increase your risk for GBM. You are also at an increased risk if someone in your family has had a brain tumor.

Complications

GBM tumors can cause several complications that can become permanent. If it damages a part of the brain that controls movement, you can suffer permanent weakness in various parts of your body at a level on par with a stroke. Permanent changes in your vision or hearing and personality are possible, as are severe, frequent headaches.

Treatments

Surgery is the first line of treatment if the tumor is located in a place safe to operate. Your surgeon will attempt to remove as much of it as possible. Removing even a portion of the tumor can make a big difference in your symptoms.

Radiation therapy is used for tumors that cannot be operated on at all or to kill cells that were not able to be removed during surgery. High doses of X-ray particles are aimed at the tumor to damage the cells and prevent them from multiplying.

Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy cancerous cells. A common form of chemotherapy for GBM is the implantation of wafers containing chemotherapy drugs during surgery; they release the medication over the course of several days. You might also receive chemotherapy intravenously or orally.

Targeted drug therapies focus on a specific aspect of the cancerous cells and aim to interfere with its actions. The most common targeted drug for GBM is Avastin. It is injected into the vein and blocks the formation of new blood vessels; without a proper blood supply, cancerous cells cannot survive.

The Best Foods When Feeling Nausea

Nausea symptoms are often accompanied by headaches.

Nausea can result from a number of different serious and non-serious medical conditions. Whether triggered by the flu, vertigo, chemotherapy treatments or a hangover, choosing the right foods helps to control symptoms. Additionally, factors such as the texture, smell or amount of food can make nausea better or worse. It's important to eat or drink what feels gentle on the stomach and to avoid spicy or rich foods.

Drinks

Liquids may actually be better for controlling nausea than solid foods. There are many different drinks to choose from, so choose whatever sounds appealing. Ginger ale, fruit juice, or a sports drink is typically easy on the stomach. Warm tea with peppermint or ginger can also be effective. These herbs are known for having anti-nausea properties and can help relax cramped stomach muscles.

The BRAT Diet

When it comes to solid foods, try to follow what is commonly called the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. These foods are recommended for nausea because they can absorb stomach acid and are easy to digest. In general, try foods that aren't overly-processed, rich or spicy. Soft fruits, lightly cooked vegetables or whole grain crackers may also be easy on the stomach.

Smells and Textures

If the smell of something makes nausea worse, don't eat it. For most people, soft, chewy and mildly aromatic foods like crackers, soups, fruit, vegetables and cereal will be appealing. Often times, smells and textures are more important than choosing what's recommended. Listen to the reactions of the body when choosing foods for nausea. Some foods can actually make symptoms worse. Pick foods that smell and taste comforting.

Small Portions

Many people mistakenly believe nausea is caused by an empty stomach. While sometimes this may be the case, eating a heavy meal can make symptoms worse. Eat small portions of fruit, toast or non-chunky soups to see how the body reacts to the food first. Wait about 15 minutes after eating. If the stomach has not reacted negatively, it's probably OK to consume a bit more. In general, take small bites and eat slowly to help the body digest properly.

Wheel Of Life Crystal Healing

Wheel of Life crystal medallions are used for healing. Using energy for the healing dynamic, individuals can charge objects and substances with the energy of the universe. Wheel of Life crystal healing utilizes the same geometric principles as pyramid power. By combining the power of energy and intention to charge substances, physical, mental, and spiritual healing are enhanced.

Principle

Geometric shapes release energy based on shape. On the Life Center Web site, Joy 101 describes the "graphics of energy." (See Reference 1) Pyramid power is not the only example of the way a civilization has used geometry to draw upon the energy of the universe. Hindus and Buddhists believe their yantras and mandalas recreate awareness by opening mundane consciousness to sacred space. According to Life Center, Wheel of Life energy opens a gate, which allows the universal (scalar) energy entrance to three-dimensional reality. (See Reference 1)

Structure

The Wheel of Life structure draws from ancient roots. Ancient Egyptians applied geometry when they designed and constructed the pyramids. According to Life Center, when one constructs a pyramid oriented to the magnetic north, the pyramid displays energy. (See Reference 1) Wheel of Life crystal healing relies upon the dimensions of a healing medallion as an energy conduit. The crystals in a Wheel of Life medallion are semiprecious stones. When Wheel of Life medallions are gold, an emerald holds the center position. Six garnets surround the emerald like spokes in a wheel. Life Center explains that the shapes of the stones are important. Wheel of Life medallions are hexagon-shaped. Stones on gold medallions are faceted. Stones on silver medallions are convex and not faceted. Gold, like the Sun, is masculine energy. Silver, like the moon, is feminine energy. (See Reference 1)

Intention

Intentionality is an important factor in Wheel of Life crystal healing. When energizing and when healing, verbalizing your intentions to form thoughts will draw universal energy. Verbal commands are prayers and mantras designed to affirm the beneficial effects of Wheel of Life healing. With the Wheel of Life medallion around your neck, state your intention in prayer form for less than a minute. In that time, universal energy will radiate from your medallion, creating a sacred and powerful opportunity for healing. Once you verbalize what you want to do and why, Life Center teaches the Light Invocation. Repeat three times, "I invoke the Light of God within. I am a clear and perfect channel. Light is my Guide." (See Reference 1)

Effects

You will experience a series of effects while performing Wheel of Life healing. First, center your being. You must attain clarity and openness to practice Wheel of Life crystal healing. As you become centered, your tension eases and your creativity is awakened. According to Life Center, within one minute of beginning Wheel of Life centering, you are enveloped in a protective white aura, through which no harm can come to you. You may become more psychically attuned. You will realize that all reality is interrelated. (See Reference 1)

Charging

Apply the Wheel of Life to energize objects and substances for healing. Charge hair care products to awaken your Crown chakra for keener intuitive and mental faculties. Charged massage oils penetrate deeper into tissues providing greater muscle relaxation. Life Center suggests wrapping a Wheel of Life medallion in a cloth for seven days. Use the energized cloth to relieve headaches. (See Reference 1) As you gain experience and understanding about the uses and benefits of Wheel of Life crystal healing, you develop a deeper awareness of healing possibilities.

Build Up Your Immune System Before An Operation

All operations and surgical procedures carry the risk of infection. A healthy, strong immune system is key in fighting microorganisms that enter the body through the incision site. Although significant measures are taken during surgery to lessen the entry of microorganisms, complete prevention of invasion is not possible. It is therefore crucial to maintain a healthy immune system prior to an operation, so that infection can be successfully overcome

Instructions

1. Eat foods high in carotenoids for 2 weeks before the operation. These potent antioxidants strengthen the immune system by boosting the production of lymphocytes, the white blood cells that attack bacteria and viruses. Carrots, leafy green vegetables, tomatoes and oranges are good sources of carotenoids.

2. Abstain from toxic substances for 1 month before surgery to keep the immune system working at maximum levels. Completely avoid illegal drugs, tobacco, sugar, caffeine and alcohol as these substances wear down the immune system.

3. Consume foods high in zinc 2 to 3 weeks prior to the operation. This mineral enhances cell regeneration and strengthens the immune system; it also increases white blood cell counts to battle infections. Dietary sources of zinc are potatoes, brown rice, yogurt and pumpkin seeds.

4. Consume foods high in vitamin C for 1 month prior to surgery. Vitamin C boosts the fighting power of the immune system by increasing the white blood cells while also fighting infection. Foods rich in vitamin C include oranges, guavas, papayas, strawberries and kiwi fruit. Eat 3 cups of these foods every day during the month before surgery.

5. Perform yoga exercises that stimulate the thymus gland 3 weeks prior to surgery. The thymus gland is located between the sternum (breastbone) and heart, and produces T-cells, a type of white blood cell that protects the body against microorganisms.

Signs And Symptoms Of Gastric Lymphoma

Gastric lymphoma is a rare form of stomach cancer that develops in the stomach lining. Many of the notable symptoms of gastric lymphoma are often related to the stomach itself and lead to individuals self-diagnosing it as an upset stomach or other less serious issue. However, chronic stomach issues and pain should be reported to a doctor immediately.

Asymptomatic

During the early stages of gastric lymphoma, many patients are asymptomatic---meaning there are no noticeable symptoms currently present.

Pain

One common symptom of gastric lymphoma is abdominal pain, which can be mild to severe. Abdominal pain can be sudden or gradual, stabbing, sharp or dull and achy.

Vomiting

Some patients may experience mild to severe vomiting. Vomiting may be accompanied by nausea, and blood may be present in the vomit.

Weight Loss

Many patients note that the other symptoms of gastric lymphoma, such as abdominal pain and nausea, lead to a lack of appetite---which in turn leads to weight loss.

Additional Symptoms

Various additional symptoms of gastric lymphoma include anorexia, abdominal masses, night sweats, gastrointestinal bleeding, fever, weakness and fatigue.

Prescription Drugs Containing Aspirin

Aspirin has been used for centuries to ease aches and pains and reduce fever. In the fifth century B.C. the father of medicine, Hippocrates discovered a bitter powder that came from willow bark. This powder is the precursor to the aspirin we use today.

Aspirin can be found in a number of prescribed drugs.

Darvon Compound-65

The active ingredient in Darvon is propoxyphene which can be habit forming and can result in physical and/or psychological dependence. Darvon is a compound containing aspirin, propoxyphene and caffeine. Suddenly stopping this drug is not advisable particularly after prolonged use or if it has been taken in high doses since it can cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

Side effects from Darvon include suicidal thoughts or actions, bleeding disorders and drowsiness or dizziness can be experienced when combined with other drugs or in the presence of alcohol which could cause death. Darvon should never be taken with antidepressants or sedatives.

Mobic (Meloxicam)

This drug was approved by the FDA in April of 2000 for use in the United States after clinical trials involving 22,000 patients in the US and abroad. Mobic is designed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and juvenile arthritis. Meloxicam can cause ulcers to develop in the gastrointestinal tract without warning. This medication is not appropriate for patients who have allergies to aspirin or other NSAIDs and is not advised for use by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.

What Should You Gargle When Your Gums Are Swollen

Swollen gums can be extremely irritating and painful. They are a very common problem, caused by gingivitis, sensitivity to a particular toothpaste or rinse, malnutrition, scurvy and even pregnancy. There are a few items that can be used to gargle with when swollen gums occur to bring relief to the pain. Talking to your doctor or dentist is essential if your gums stay swollen for more than a couple days, as this may be a sign of a more serious condition.

Why Do Swollen Gums Occur?

Swollen gums can be the first sign of either gum or periodontal disease. Most people refer to periodontal disease as gingivitis, which can cause infections of the mouth if not remedied. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has stated that infrequent brushing and flossing can lead to gum disease, and swollen gums is one of the first signs. Proper brushing and flossing are essential for not only healthy teeth, but for the gums, as well.

Household Treatments

There are many treatments for swollen gums, many of which involve gargling. One of the oldest and most common treatments uses salt as a remedy. To try this, add ¼ tsp. of regular table salt to a glass of warm water, stir and gargle. You can use this solution at least a few times each day to help bring relief to the area that is swollen. Another remedy is to mix baking soda in with warm water, about a tablespoon full. This helps to relieve the irritation that swollen gums can bring.

Hydrogen peroxide can be used as a mouth rinse to help swollen gums. Mix equal amounts of water and hydrogen peroxide and gargle a few times a day. This can help kill the bacteria in the mouth, as well as reduce swelling that has occurred.

Using Herbs and Oils

Gargling with a mouthwash that contains certain essential oils can help swollen gums. This includes echinacea, peppermint oils and chamomile, as they all have anti-inflammatory properties that target the bacteria found in the mouth. You can also try adding the herb turmeric to water, just a pinch, and gargling. Another remedy is a mixture made out of the bark of a babul tree. Boil the bark in a pot of water until half of the water has evaporated, and then gargle with the rest after it's cooled off to help ease the pain of swollen gums.
