Avoid A Relationship With A Narcissist

I've written about cope once you're in a relationship with a narcissist. But one of the best ways to handle this problem is to not have it at all! Here's prevent yourself from becoming entangled in a relationship with a narcissist.

Instructions

1. First of all, narcissists are often drawn to people who serve their own interests and get them the maximum amount of attention. So if you are an outgoing person with a complex about rescuing people, look out! You are an ideal mate for a narcissist.

2. If you simply must rescue someone or devote your time to something, pick a cause not a person! Stray animals, homeless people, charity work...there are numerous ways that you can genuinely help the world. One of them should not be devoting all of your mental and emotional energy to someone who has a need for attention that can never be filled!

3. Learn to differentiate between people who have real needs and people who are manipulating you for their own personal gain. You should never enter a romantic relationship with someone who claims to need you just to get by! You should only date or become intertwined with emotionally stable people who like you and want to be with you, not who claim they need you to survive. That leads to some very unhealthy emotional patterns.

4. If you find yourself constantly at a loss for "why" someone is doing something, or you think to yourself, "I just can't figure them out", take that as a major red flag. Narcissists have emotional lives and thought patterns like mazes. They do everything for their own gain, and they usually operate outside of a normal rational line of thinking. They can't explain themselves like a normal person communicates, because to be honest they would have to admit that they are doing everything for themselves. It would, in essence, blow their cover to be transparent to you.

5. Beware anyone who tries to make you feel guilty. This is also a red flag that you should take very seriously. Guilt is not love, but it is the main tool of a narcissist. They will use guilt to get your attention, to keep you around, to keep you away from people they don't want you near, to get you to do what they want you to do. Even on small levels like making decisions about what to do on a date. Someone who loves you would never try to manipulate you, they would just tell you the truth about what they want, consider what you want as well, and make a decision.

6. Beware people who try to tell you that their problems are lofty and great, and that they need more time to figure out their problems than other people. This is one of the main tools of a narcissist. They try to keep a mystique about themselves, as though they are deep and mysterious. They think this will keep you around or impress you into not asking them questions anymore. It's bologna and it's manipulation. Don't buy it. In a real relationship, your partner won't treat you like they are greater, more important, or more high-minded than you.

7. Just like people who dole out any other form of abuse, a narcissist isn't really looking for love. They are looking to fill a need based off of their own dysfunction. Remember this, it is the painful truth. If it wasn't you, it would be someone else. It's typical of a narcissist to move quickly from one relationship to the next. Because it's not about love or caring for someone, it's about having someone around to do their bidding.

8. Please, be careful about becoming romantically involved with a narcissist, or even living with one as a roomate. It can be a maddening and sad experience that may scar you. It's just another form of an abusive relationship.

9. If you seem to be consistently attracted to selfish, unstable people or people with narcissistic behaviors, you need to do some self-exploration. Consider therapy for yourself in order to break the cycle of unhealthy relationships. You deserve better!

What Foods Are Forbidden In The South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet is designed as a long-term plan and is structured in three phases. Phase 1 is the strictest with respect to forbidden foods, Phase 2 is less strict and Phase 3 is considered the maintenance stage.

Phase 1

In order to balance insulin levels in the body, Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet forbids certain fatty meats, high carbohydrate vegetables including beets and carrots, starchy foods such as potatoes and pasta, dairy excluding low-fat cheese, fruit and fruit juice, alcohol and sugar.

Phase 2

During Phase 2, you are allowed to reintroduce more foods taking care to avoid starches and breads and fruit with high sugar content such as watermelon and pineapple.

Phase 3

Phase 3 will permit most foods while monitoring portion control and avoiding "bad" carbohydrates.

Bad Carbs

Defined as refined breads, rices and sugars, these foods surge blood levels and lead to weight gain. Bad carbs are processed and provide the body no nutritional value. To avoid them, substitute brown rice for white, wheat or whole-grain bread for white, and avoid refined sugar whenever possible.

Misconceptions

The South Beach Diet does not require you to avoid carbohydrates altogether. While this is important during Phase 1, the maintenance stages of the diet simply dictate that you choose good over bad carbs.

Care For A Baby With Torticollis

Care for a Baby With Torticollis

Torticollis is caused by tight muscles on one side of the neck that make turning the head difficult, and sometimes cause the head to tilt towards the affected side. Infants typically have a version known as congenital muscular torticollis (CMT). CMT affects 2 percent of newborns and can result from a lack of space inutero, poor inutero positioning or low levels of amniotic fluid. Whatever the cause, proper care of a baby with torticollis is essential.

Instructions

1. Ask your doctor for a referral to a physical therapist immediately. Physical therapists guide you through appropriate and safe stretching exercises that are designed to stretch out the tight muscles.

2. Provide your baby with opportunities to turn her head in the opposite direction. For example, if your child has torticollis on the left side then encourage turning to the right.

3. Place a baby down to sleep then gently turn his head so the non-affected side is against the mattress.

4. Allow your baby to engage in playtime on her stomach whenever possible so the muscles on the back of the neck become stronger.

5. Monitor the shape of your child's head. Some babies with torticollis develop positional plagiocephaly, which is a flattened head on one side. If you notice your baby's head is flat on one side, consult with your doctor.

6. Expect a referral to an orthopedic surgeon from your physical therapist or pediatrician if your child's torticollis does not improve by the age of 18 months. Approximately 15 percent of cases require surgery.

Herbal Treatment For Scalp Ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal infection. On the scalp, it is called tinea capitis. Certain herbal treatments are very effective at killing fungus and can be used to treat your tinea capitis. While most herbal treatments for ringworm are used topically, certain herbs have strong antifungal properties when used internally.

Use an Integrative Approach

One of the best ways to use herbs for ringworm is to combine them with the typical standard treatment, over-the-counter (OTC) antifungals. Used together, they will reinforce the benefits of each other. It is best to use your topical herbal treatments and OTC creams at separate times druing the day. Prompt, consistent treatment can clear up the infection in about three weeks. If you are interested in using natural therapies alone, consulting with a health care provider experienced in alternative medicine is the best way to design an effective treatment regimen.

Herbal Treatment

Herbal treatments for this condition are mainly used externally. Using the following herbal treatments will help kill the infection and promote healing.

Tea tree oil is well-known for its action against fungus. Apply the oil two to three times a day to the affected area. You can use full strength and do not need to dilute it. Do not use tea tree if you are allergic to celery or thyme. Use walnut leaf extract if your infection is oozing; apply the oil to the scalp two to three times a day.

Taking 4,000 mg daily of a garlic supplement is equivalent to eating one clove of garlic. If you choose, you can eat a clove daily; you do not need to chew it. Garlic is a potent antifungal herb. Drinking pau'd arco tea three times daily or using an extract as directed on the label is also beneficial for fighting the infection from the inside.

Choose Meals While You Are Somersizing

Diets don't work for most people. While they may stick close to an outlined program for a period of time and manage to lose the weight they want, keeping it off proves to be another matter. That is why a number of physicians now propose that, instead, people look to change the way thay eat over the long haul. One of the most successful programs that has allowed millions of people all around the world to lose and keep off the weight is a program called Somersizing. Instead of limiting caloric intake or forcing people to choose to eat only certain types of foods, this program teaches something different. Somersizing teaches combine the right type of foods together so that the body can metabolize whatever is eaten in the most effective way possible. It also seeks to both jump start and maintain a good metabolism by recommending smaller meals spread over a longer period time.

Instructions

1. Learn the two levels of Somersizing. Level one is the entry level. It is where everyone starts if they want to drop a few pounds. Level two is the advanced level. It is for those who have successfully dropped the pounds they wanted and now just want to maintain their current weight level.

2. Eliminate funky foods on level one. They will impede your weight loss. However, don't lose heart, as you can slowly add those foods back into your diet once you have achieved your ideal weight. Funky foods include sugars and high-starch foods like white flour, potatoes and corn. They also include caffeine and alcohol. Sugars that should be eliminated include white, brown, and raw sugar as well as syrup, sucrose, fructose, molasses, and honey, except for the sugar-free variety. Sugar substitutes like Splenda, Stevia and Somersweet are acceptable alternative sugars. Avoid NutraSweet as a sugar substitute because of aspartame which causes its own set of problems. Starches that should be eliminated include anything with white or seminola flour, white pasta, white rice, corn (including popcorn), potatoes (including sweet potatoes and pumpkin), and winter squashes (like butternut and accorn). Starches that are acceptable include whole wheat pastas, whole wheat and multi-grain rices, multi-grain breads, and multi-grain cereals. Eliminating funky foods from your diet forces your body to convert your fat resources into glucose that will give you more energy.

3. Separate the foods that you typically eat into the four Somersize groups. These include proteins and fats; vegetables; carbohydrates; and fruits. Proteins and fats include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, oil, butter and cheese. Vegetables include most veggies that typically fall within that group. One major exception is beans, which fall within the carbohydrate group. Carbohydrates include beans, breads, crackers, hot and cold cereals, pastas, and rices as well as mustard products and nonfat dairy products. Fruits include most varieties that typically fall within that food group.

4. Plan to eat fruits on their own and preferably on an empty stomach. Fruits, combined with most other foods, cause gas and bloating. Therefore, it is best to eat these items on their own; either as a beginning dish of the day or as a dessert, if it is served toward the close of the evening (not directly after a meal.) If you eat fruit first thing in the morning, plan on waiting at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours before following it up with a proteins and fats or carbohydrate meal. If you are eating the fruit as a dessert, wait at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours after the meal is served to serve the fruit dessert. While all of the food from the meal may not yet be digested, it should be far enough along in the process to prevent bloating and serious gas issues.

5. Eat proteins with fats. Do not mix in carbohydrates. Proteins and fats digest at one level, while carbs digest at another. If you mix the two together, it confuses your stomach and generally results in a slow-down of your whole system. That can throw your metabolism off. Do not add fats into your carbohydrate meal. Instead look for alternative methods of achieving the taste that you want.

6. Feel free to mix vegetables with either proteins and fats or carbohydrates. They will digest well with either and not cause a system imbalance.

7. Wait a minimum of 2 1/2 to 3 hours between meals if you plan to switch from proteins and fats to carbohydrates. For example, you might choose a carbohydrate meal for lunch but prefer a protein and fat one for dinner. That is fine as long as you give your stomach time to digest the previous meal before switching to another type.

8. Don't skip meals. Eliminating meals will throw your metabolism off and cause a slow down in the way your body deals with weight issues. It is important to eat three meals a day. It is equally important to eat until you feel satisfied so that you won't be tempted to do a lot of snacking in between meals.

9. Drink lots of water because it always helps to purify the body, moisturize skin and hair, and assist in digestion. Other acceptable drinks include sugar free products that do not contain caffeine or NutraSweet; decaffeinated teas, coffees and sodas. Limit soda intake because of all of the extra chemicals and preservatives located therein since these will toxify a system that you have just purged and purified. Don't drink a lot with your meal since liquids can dilute your stomach's acids and cause a slow down in digestion.

10. Use Somersize level one recipes as much as you can. They are already figured out for you so that you don't have to think about mix your foods for meal planning. Additionally, the food is gourmet quality so you will actually feel like you are being treated to something special rather than being deprived. If you don't have time to cook all of your meals, order Somersize pre-packed foods just like you would from the store. They are clearly marked as level one or two so that you know exactly what you are purchasing. Of course, you can also plan out your own Somersize meals. The choice is yours according to the time you wish to put into the program.

11. Move to level two after you have lost all the weight you wanted. This is when you can begin to add back in some of those funky foods that you might have missed like sugar, white flour breads and pastas, potatoes, and other high starch foods. If you are happy with whole-grain foods, you might opt to continue those and just add back in potatoes or sugar products that you have missed. The key is NOT to add back in everything you ate before. You also can't have those items every meal in excessive quantities. If you do that, you will end up back where you were before.

12. Don't totally deprive yourself. If you really, really want that piece of birthday cake or a peach margarita, then have it. Depriving yourself of everything that you love all of the time is exactly what makes dieting a problem rather than a solution. If you break your eating program for something that you love, then just revert back to level one for a few days to work the imbalance through your system and get right back on track.

Treat Swelling After A Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is an operation performed by a doctor to remove the female uterus. There are several types of hysterectomies. An abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) involves removing the uterus through a classic cut across the belly. During a laparoscopic hysterectomy, the doctor makes small incisions on the stomach and removes the uterus through them. In a laparoscopic-assisted vaginal (LAVH) hysterectomy, the doctor cuts the uterus into small pieces via small incisions on the stomach and removes it vaginally. The doctor cuts the uterus out and removes it vaginally without any external cuts in a vaginal hysterectomy (TVH). Read on to discover treat swelling after a hysterectomy.

Instructions

1. Use compression. Compression bands that go across the stomach help reduce swelling. These bands reduce discomfort caused by everything shifting after the surgery, too, so they serve a dual purpose.

2. Rest up. Swelling after hysterectomy usually indicates overdoing it. Lie down, rest and let the body recuperate. Don't push too hard too fast, because that results in injury.

3. Try ice. Cold reduces inflammation, therefore reducing swelling. Lay in bed with a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in towels over the swollen area. Don't let the stomach get numb from the cold, and take breaks from the cold packs to avoid getting too cold.

4. Use anti-inflammatory medication. The doctor probably prescribed these before checking you out of the hospital. If not, call and ask for a prescription for some. If nothing else, verify it's okay to take over the counter NSAID's (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium. These medications reduce the inflammation and swelling, and are available at any store.

5. Note the type of hysterectomy. Hysterectomies can sometimes include the removal of one or both ovaries, the cervix or the fallopian tubes. During a hysterectomy doctors may perform procedures to the bladder or rectum. If it was more than just the uterus removed, swelling may be coming from one of the other removals.

6. Call the doctor. Any swelling that seems abnormal or causes concern warrants a call or visit to the doctor. It's the doctor's job to make sure that recovery goes well, so don't worry about seeming worrisome. It's always better to be safe than sorry. If nothing else, the doctor can help ease concerns.

Perform Relaxed Breathing Exercises

A common trait among mind-body therapies is the use of relaxed breathing exercises. You can perform relaxed breathing as an independent exercise as well. Relaxed breathing exercises will help you reduce stress.

Instructions

Perform Relaxed Breathing Exercises

1. Lie down on the floor. Put a pillow under your head and one under your knees. Place one hand to your side and the other on your stomach.

2. Breath in slowly through your nose, pulling in the air as you count silently to six. You should feel your stomach rise up slightly.

3. Hold in your breath while you count to four. As you do this, focus on the sensation of having your lungs filled with air.

4. Slowly release your breath through your mouth, counting to six while you breathe out. Feel your stomach slowly ease downward as you exhale.

5. Count silently to four. Then repeat the process, starting with step 1. Repeat this exercise four times. Stand up slowly.

6. Let your arms rest at your sides. Breathe in slowly through your nose and hold for four seconds. Slowly exhale through your mouth.

7. With elbows slightly bent, hold your hands in front of your stomach with your palms facing your body, but not touching it.

8. As you breathe in slowly through your nose, raise your hands upward. Your hands should follow the path of your body from your navel to just up over your head. When your lungs are filled, your hands will be over your head. Separate them slightly.

9. As you slowly exhale through your mouth, lower your hands back down along the path of your body, finally letting them fall back to your sides.

10. Repeat this exercise four times, starting with step 7. Once you’ve completed four cycles, repeat the exercise once more, but leave your arms in a relaxed state at your sides.

11. Performing these two sets of relaxed breathing exercises twice a day will relax your muscles.

Perform Basic Life Support

Perform basic life support.

Having a little knowledge can sometimes make the difference between life and death. This is especially true when someone suddenly faints. During this kind of emergency, it's important to aid the person as quickly as possible. Knowing perform basic life support can be a great help until professional medical assistance can arrive at the scene and take over.

Instructions

Checking for Breathing

1. Watch the patient for signs of breathing, which include a heaving chest and audible breath. Place your hand in front of the patient's mouth when in doubt. This will help you feel him exhale if he's breathing.

2. Call for help. While you're aiding the patient, another passerby can dial the paramedics. Call 911 if nobody is around to hear you.

3. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, if the patient isn't breathing.

Performing CPR

4. Open the patient's airway. Push the patient's forehead down while lifting the chin gently. This is an essential step--even if the patient is injured. Do not move your hands.

5. Pinch the patient's nose between your forefinger and thumb on the hand holding down the forehead. Keep your other hand under the chin.

6. Inhale normally. Lower yourself to the patient's mouth. Seal your mouth on the patient's.

7. Exhale normally. Attempt to open up the airway once more if the patient's chest doesn't rise after you exhale. Continue with a second breath otherwise.

8. Place your hand's heel directly onto the sternum, located in the center of the chest. Place your second hand directly on top of the first one.

9. Lean forward so your shoulders are perpendicular to your hands.

10. Press down quickly and firmly up to halfway into the depth of the chest. Allow the chest to relax completely before proceeding with the next compression.

11. Perform 30 compressions before repeating the cycle again, starting with the two breaths. Continue this until help arrives or the victim regains consciousness.

Breast Growth Symptoms

It's imperative for women to be aware of any breast growths because the earlier they are detected, the likelihood of surviving breast cancer increases. According to Wellsphere.com, 90 percent of all breast cancer cases are caught in the early stages. This has contributed to the declining mortality rates despite the overall cases of breast cancer increasing in the United States.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the second most prevalent cancer in the world, next to lung cancer. Breast cancer is gauged medically by different levels: TNM 1, 2 and 3a. This number scoring system is used to approximate how advanced and dangerous the cancerous tumor is. If a malignant growth is discovered and diagnosed, surgery, radiation or chemotherapy will be used separately or combined to combat the disease. Survival hinges on this early detection and therapy. Breast cancer is more common in women but can afflict men as well. Positive lymph nodes and tumor size are used to judge survival, recovery and relapse.

Symptoms of a Breast Growth

Breast growth symptoms will manifest themselves by an alteration in the appearance of the nipple and breast. Inflamation, skin peeling and redness will occur in the breast nipple. In addition, the breast and nipple will become very sensitive and tender to the touch. If some of these symptoms occur, growths may be present in the underarm area. Growths are either hard or soft. Also, if blood or fluid exude from the nipple, there may be a possible growth in the breast.

More Symptoms

The breast affected by growths may become inflamed and disfigured. Also, swollen lymph nodes in the underarm area may indicate a growth in the breast. Other signs and symproms of breast growth will be: constant itching on the breast, bruising on or around the breast, rashing on the breast and nipple erections that do not relax and lower.

Malignant Tumors and Risk Factor

Malignant tumors occur when the cells in the body accumulate due to older cells not being eliminated properly as new cells grow. This collection of cells forms into tumors. Angiogenesis occurs when the malignant tumor creates new blood vessels to provide it with the necessary nutrients for survival. As the malignant tumor in the breast grows, it can spread to other parts of the body in a process referred to as invasion. Metastasis happens when malignant cells transplants into other areas of the body through the lymphatic system. These cells will form into new malignant tumors. The brain, liver, lymph nodes, lungs and bones are common destinations for new breast cancer tumors. Some risk factors for breast cancer include age, genetics, lifestyle, hormones, weight and first pregnancy age plus alcohol intake.

Conclusion

Benign and malignant growths in the breast region share similar signs and symptoms. It is imperative to see a doctor immediately and test for malignancy if a growth if found in the breast. As an early detection measure, women should do monthly self-exams of the breasts. Also, a doctor can determine whether symptoms of the breast are something other than cancer, such as an infection. Breast growth symptoms do not always point to cancer--they can be something else as breast conditions share similar symptoms.

Sjogren'S Gastrointestinal Problems

Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that is manifested by chronic dryness in the mouth, eyes, throat, genitals and digestive tract. The condition is not entirely understood, but doctors believe there is some link with thymus and parasympathetic nervous system failures. It is also linked to other autoimmune diseases, including thyroid disease and lupus. Although dryness in the mouth and eyes tend to receive the most attention in terms of symptoms, many Sjogren's patients suffer from gastrointestinal difficulties.

Why Gastrointestinal Problems?

Gastrointestinal secretions often decrease in patients with Sjogren's Syndrome, including a decrease in the mucous that lines the gastrointestinal tract. According to Dr. Joop D van de Merwe, Sjogren's can also cause inflammation of the stomach lining, which can lead to pain and stomach upset. Decreased saliva production can make it difficult to swallow foods and can cause pain in the esophagus.

Like all Sjogren's Syndrome symptoms, these gastrointestinal problems may go through periods of flare-ups and remissions.

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Sjogren's syndrome patients may face a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms. Some may develop sensitivities to certain foods while others may experience general symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome that are not specific to particular foods: gas, bloating, heartburn and diarrhea. Decreased gastrointestinal mucous and other fluids may also cause constipation. Not every Sjogren's patient experiences these symptoms, and when they do, severity differs from patient to patient.

Dietary Treatments

The best dietary solution to gastrointestinal flare-ups is to determine the foods make symptoms worse and to avoid them. Although some trigger foods are specific to individual patients, doctors recommend avoiding spicy and acidic foods and alcohol across the board. If esophagus pain is a problem because of decreased saliva and difficulty swallowing, sticking to soft foods and liquids or dipping foods in sauces can help. Avoiding crunchy foods can also help, as well as eating foods at room temperature instead of hot.

Other Treatments

According to the LifeExtension group, essential fatty acids have shown promise in lessening Sjogren's symptoms. Consider taking omega-3, omega-6, evening primrose oil and cytokines supplements. L-glutamine may be beneficial in specifically addressing digestive problems by improving mucous secretions. Over the counter heartburn and stomach upset medications can also help manage some of the symptoms.

Steroids sometimes are prescribed to treat Sjogren's symptoms, but these often cause stomach upset themselves. Be sure to discuss your gastrointestinal problems with your doctor before taking steroid treatment.

Celiac Disease and Getting Help

Some Sjogren's Syndrome patients are also diagnosed with celiac disease. Patients with celiac disease cannot digest foods with gluten. Doctors are unsure why there is a link between Sjogren's and celiac, but it is important to let your doctor know about your intestinal problems, so you can be tested for this condition. Your doctor can also help you come up with an eating plan that gives you the nutrients you need without making your symptoms worse.

Acupressure Migraine Cure

Papyrus Migraine Therapy

Acupressure is an ancient Asian healing technique that combines acupuncture and massage therapy. Acupressurists apply pressure to meridians (invisible channels for energy)) throughout the body. Acupressure is used to complement other therapies for migraine sufferers (migraineurs).

Migraine

Migraines continue to baffle medical and holistic healing professionals. Migraineurs experience debilitating pain. Every migraineur experiences migraines differently. People with migraines long for treatment and prevention plans to allow them to return to fully productive lives. Not just another headache, a migraine can be life-threatening in the form of migraine-related stroke. Although the medical community continues to speculate about the cause of migraines, acupressurists claim to treat migraine causes.

Head and Foot

Try three simple acupressure techniques to ease migraine pain. Perform the following techniques in a cool darkened room. Sit comfortably. Mute sounds if possible. Apply consistent pressure all over your head. Holistic Online suggests massaging your head as if you are shampooing. Move your thumbs into place on either side of the base of your skull. Apply moderate pressure. Do not touch your spine. Lay your head slightly back. Maintain pressure, pushing upward toward your skull, for two minutes. Breathe easily, inhaling through your nostrils and exhaling through your mouth. Keep your eyes closed. Sit in a comfortable chair. Place a shoulders-high table about 8 to 10 inches in front of you. A TV tray will do. Leave enough room to bend forward. Apply deep thumb pressure upon "'the Gates of Consciousness points." Use both thumbs, pressing 2 inches out from the middle of your neck, just below the base of your skull. Bend forward. Prop your elbows on the table for support. Pressing firmly, close your eyes and practice deep breathing for 2 minutes. Use your thumb or the heel of your opposite foot to press against the ridge between your big toe and your next toe. Press and rub for 2 minutes. Breathe normally.

Hand

Often people experience migraine pain above or in one eye. Try the following technique to relieve such pain. With your thumb and forefinger, press the webbing between your opposite thumb and forefinger. Keep the latter two appendages together. Apply pressure at the muscle's high point with this configuration. Do as often as necessary.

Considerations

Consider yourself fortunate if acupressure alone relieves migraine pain. Acupressure is not a preventative migraine solution. Use acupressure in conjunction with other treatment and prevention plans. Seek the advice of a neurologist. Keep your specialist informed of the alternative methods you try and their effectiveness. With migraines, as with all ailments, get involved in the healing process.

Problems Due To Reduction Surgery

According to the Mayo Clinic, breast-reduction surgery, mammoplasty, can help women who have large breasts eliminate problems such as chronic neck, shoulder and back pain and poor posture, as well as skin rash under the breasts. Mammoplasty is a term used to describe changing the size of the breasts. It can refer to breast enlargement (augmentation) and breast reduction.

Breast-reduction surgery is generally reserved for women age 20 and over, however, the surgery is sometimes performed on teenage girls who are suffering substantial psychological and/or physical effects. Several potential complications are involved with this surgery.

Effects

The most frequently used mammoplasty technique involves an anchor-shaped incision though which the surgeon removes a surplus of breast tissue, fat and skin to reduce the size of your breast.

In the majority of cases, the nipple and areola, the darker skin of the breast which is around the nipple in a circular area, remain untouched during surgery. However, when breasts are excessively large and tend to dangle, the surgeon may have to remove the nipple and areola from their blood vessels and nerves and reattach them at a higher position.

This procedure causes a permanent loss of sensation in the nipples and can make a woman unable to breast-feed.

Post-Surgery

Upon completion of a mammoplasty, your breasts are protected with a gauze dressing or elastic bandages. You will be given pain medication and antibiotics to reduce your chance of infection. Some patients have same-day surgery, while others will spend a night in the hospital.

Your breasts will most likely feel tender and sensitive for about one month, and there may be bruising and swelling. The scars from your incisions are permanent.

It can take as long as six months for your new, smaller breasts to take full shape.

Risks

Several risks are associated with breast-reduction surgery in addition to the problems with breast-feeding. As with most major operations, there is the possibility of infection. Symptoms include swelling, soreness and redness.

Subtle differences in shape or size of the breasts (asymmetry) are common after mammoplasty. The majority of breast-reduction patients will experience temporary alteration in nipple sensation that can take months to return.

Complications

According to the Mayo Clinic, mammoplasty complications may include impaired blood supply to the nipples, which can result in scarring and possible loss of the nipple. There is also a chance of irreversible numbness in the nipple and/or entire breast.

Some patients may have psychological reactions following breast reduction surgery as they adjust to their new body image and change in appearance. There is always the possibility of patient dissatisfaction after the operation either because they think the breasts are still too large or too small.

Outlook

Despite the various risks and possible complications, most breast reductions provide satisfactory results. You may need to wear a supportive bra for several months, as your breasts reform to their new, smaller size.

Breast reduction surgery alleviates shoulder pressure from bra straps, allows physical activities that were once burdensome and can result in an improved self-image.

What Will Induce Labor

If you have not gone into labor by your due date, your doctor may opt to implement one or more techniques to help induce labor for the subsequent delivery of your baby.

Relaxation

Generally, you if you are too tense, contractions will not start. Releasing tension caused by stress and other factors will ease your body into beginning contractions. Meditation, massage and taking a warm bath are all activities that will help you relax.

Acupuncture and Massage

Two non-invasive methods to induce labor naturally are through acupuncture and massage, where pressure points are stimulated to help get contractions started.

Moderate Exercises

Exercises, including walking, pedaling a stationary bicycle and swinging help start contractions naturally. Movements performed while maintaining an upright position push on your cervix, which increases the chance for labor induction.

Prostaglandins

Medication containing prostaglandins is used to help start contractions to induce labor if your cervix has not been fully dilated.

Foley Catheter

In lieu of medication, your doctor or midwife may choose to insert a catheter into your cervix. This catheter has a balloon at the end of it. When it inflates with water, it pushes on your cervix, which stimulates contractions.

Warnings

Inducing labor too early before your due date can be harmful to your baby's health, as the baby may not be fully developed. Consult your doctor or midwife for suggestions on whether labor induction is beneficial for your situation.

The Best Office Chairs For The Lower Back

The best office chairs encourage good posture.

Office workers typically spend much of the day in a seated position. Sitting in a chair for extended periods of time places stress on the lower back. For this reason, ergonomic chairs that promote correct posture and support the lower back are beneficial in the office environment. Office workers can choose from a number of ergonomic chairs and no one make and model is necessarily better than another. The best ergonomic chairs will possess certain important characteristics, allowing the user to adjust the chair to his specific needs.

Seat Height

The height of an office chair must be easily adjustable, and all good ergonomic chairs should have a pneumatic adjustment lever. In most cases, a seat height that ranges between 16 and 21 inches from the floor is best. Such a height will allow you to keep your thighs parallel to the floor and your feet flat on the floor. This height also allows your forearms to be level with the work surface.

Backrest

A backrest that is separate from the seat must be adjustable, and you should be able to make adjustments to both its angle and height. Backrests should ideally be 12 to 19 inches in width and designed to support the curve of the spine, particularly in the region of the lower spine. In the case of chairs that are manufactured with a combined backrest and seat, the backrest should be adjustable in both forward and back angles. In these chairs, the backrest must have a locking mechanism to hold it in place once you have decided on a suitable angle.

Lumbar Support

The lower, or lumbar, area of your spine has a natural curve. Extended periods in a seated position, particularly without the necessary support, tends to flatten this inward curve and places unnatural strain on this sensitive area. For this reason, an ergonomic chair must offer a lumbar adjustment in both height and depth. Such a design allows you to adjust the chair to best suit your personal needs.

Seat material and Swivel Function

Ergonomic chairs should be designed with sufficient padding on both the seat and back, particularly where your lower back makes contact with the chair. Materials that breathe are preferable, so opt for a cloth fabric over a harder surface. Ergonomic chairs must be able to rotate. This function allows you to reach the various areas in your work place without putting strain on your back.

Diet For Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is best described as low blood sugar. It is a state caused by a lower than normal blood glucose level. Persons who have blood glucose of 70 mg/dl are said to be hypoglycemic, although it really depends upon the individual as to the specific level of blood glucose that will trigger hypoglycemia.

Symptoms

Symptoms of hypoglycemia include, but are not limited to, anxiety and nervousness, cold sweats, palpitations, fast heartbeat, dilated pupils and/or feelings of pins and needles in the feet and hands. The person may complain of intense hunger. Another common complaint is a severe headache. Those with severe hypoglycemia may exhibit unusual aggressiveness and anger, amnesia or may appear to be very drunk.

Characteristics

Hypoglycemia is often seen in those with insulin dependent diabetes (type 1), but is not limited to that disease. Persons with type 2 diabetes may also suffer hypoglycemia if they fail to eat or take their medications properly. Hypoglycemia is seen in people who have a problem with digestion in which the body is unable to use the sugars produced during digestion in the proper way. Having hypoglycemia does not mean that you have diabetes, it merely means that the body is not responding to the sugar ingested in the proper way.

Treatment

Controlling how and what a person eats is the main treatment for hypoglycemia. A diet with moderate proteins and whole grains is recommended because these products are absorbed more steadily and over a longer time than a diet high in processed sugars. The diet should also contain a small amount of fats, as these help keep the body's glucose at a more steady level. Eating smaller, more frequent meals about three hours apart also helps the body maintain a more constant blood glucose level. Eating something containing a fairly high amount of protein just before going to bed will help maintain a steady glucose level during the night.

Diagnosis

Those suspected to have hypoglycemia should obtain a blood glucose meter. Anytime they feel that their blood sugar has dropped, they should test their blood glucose level and record the results. They should also test their blood glucose level the first thing in the morning before they have eaten, to monitor how low the blood glucose is dropping during the night. Your physician may order a glucose tolerance test, which measures how the body reacts to glucose over a several-hour period.

Warnings

Persons suffering from a hypoglycemic episode should eat something immediately that contains a high level of refined sugar. This will cause the blood glucose level to increase rather rapidly. Care should be taken if the person is showing signs of lethargy or is unresponsive. In this case, a spoonful of honey can be slowly dripped into the person's mouth, preferably under the tongue, taking care not to cause the patient to aspirate any of the liquid. In some cases, a person may require an injection of glucose directly into a vein to increase the glucose level.

Choose An Antidepressant

Each year millions of people around the world are diagnosed with depression. This medical condition affects your mind and body and its emotional and physical symptoms can be so severe that they disrupt your life. An antidepressant medication is often the first treatment used to alleviate severe symptoms of depression. Although medication may not cure your depression, they can help you reduce your symptoms so that you can pursue other forms of treatment such as psychotherapy. Work with your mental health professional and explore your drug options.

Instructions

1. Make an appointment with a psychiatrist. Although a family physician can help you realize that you need to treat your depression, a psychiatrist specializes in treatment for mental disorders. He will most likely be familiar with the latest antidepressants available and the risks involved.

2. Discuss Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. This antidepressant medication is usually well tolerated and it is often effective. Common SSRIs include Sertraline (Zoloft), Paroxetine (Paxil), Fluoxetine (Prozac), and Escitalopram (Lexapro). SSRIs are believed to regulate a chemical in the brain called serotonin, which is important for sleep, mental function, digestion, and sleep. Low serotonin levels may contribute to depression.

3. Discuss a class of antidepressants called tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). This group of antidepressants is the second choice for many physicians because they usually have more severe side effects. TCAs work by inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain. Common TCAs used for depression include Doxepin (Sinequan), Nortriptyline (Pamelor), Protripyline (Vivactil) and Trimipramine (Surmontil).

4. Discuss the side effects of the antidepressant your physician is suggesting. Common side effects of antidepressants include dizziness, drowsiness, constipation and blurred vision. Know which symptoms require immediate medical attention such as suicidal thoughts, worsening of symptoms, aggression, and dangerous impulses.

5. Ask if the antidepressant will interact with other medications that you are currently taking. Ask if there are certain foods or substances that you will have to avoid while taking the antidepressant.

6. Ask how long it is necessary to take the medication. Discuss withdrawal symptoms that you should expect when you stop taking the antidepressant.

7. Allow the medication time to work. You may need to wait four to six weeks before you see the complete therapeutic effect of the antidepressant.

8. Continue to take the medication and do not stop without discussing it with your physician. Always follow the dosage instructions and don't skip a dose. Never stop taking the antidepressant just because your symptoms improve. Stopping treatment suddenly may cause the depression to return or you may have serious withdrawal symptoms.

9. Note the effects of the antidepressant medication in a journal. Write down any emotional and physical changes that you are experiencing. Talk to your physician about these changes.

10. Be patient as your physician tries to pinpoint the exact dosage and medication that works best for you.

Make Homemade Snake Repellent

African Bush Cobra

Because some species of snakes are poisonous, it is important to protect yourself if you are outdoors. If you live in an area where snakes are abundant, especially poisonous ones, you should always carry a snake repellent to keep those slinky reptiles at bay. You can purchase snake repellent at your local hardware or camping store, but if you live in an area where snakes are frequently a problem, you may find it more economical to make your own snake repellent. Snake repellent can not only keep you and your family safe from snakes, it can be a first defense against poisonous species.

Instructions

1. Get rid of spiders. Often, spiders will feed off of snakes in your area. Vacuum any spiders or spider eggs in your location before putting down snake repellent.

2. Mix equal parts cat litter and mothballs together, and spread thickly across the ground to deter snakes. Snakes will get the cat litter stuck in their scales and do not like the smell of mothballs. You can purchase both cat litter and mothballs at your local grocery store or drugstore.

3. Mix equal parts powdered sulfur with moth crystals for a more powerful snake repellent. Moth crystals have more surface area than mothballs, and sulfur is a common ingredient in over-the-counter snake repellents. Unfortunately, sulfur has a very strong smell that humans also dislike.

4. Dust the powdered sulfur and moth crystals mixture in all cracks and crevices, as well as on any ground that you do not want a snake to cross.

5. Spray a mixture of cinnamon oil and clove oil directly on the snake to deter it if you come in direct contact with one. Load equal parts cinnamon oil and clove oil into a spray bottle, and shake well.

Make Ghee With Turmeric

Ghee is clarified butter made by boiling unsalted butter until the water is evaporated. Turmeric is used in Indian cooking for its earthy flavor and golden yellow color. Together, they are a basic flavoring in Indian cuisine as well as a highly-regarded Ayurvedic medicine for respiratory ailments and skin conditions.

Instructions

1. Melt butter in the sauce pan over medium heat. As the butter melts, it will start to boil. White foam formed mostly of proteins and other solids will float to the top, and sediment will start settling to the bottom of the pan. Do not stir, but keep the butter boiling gently until the sediment is golden brown and the oil under the foam turns amber. At this point the oil should also smell like fresh-baked croissants.

2. Remove the pan of ghee from the heat to prevent burning. Let the ghee cool for 30 minutes, then line a strainer with some cheese cloth and strain the ghee into sterilized jars. As it cools, ghee hardens and becomes opaque and yellow. Reserve 2 tsp. for the next step.

3. Heat reserved 2 tsp ghee in frying pan over medium heat until ghee is melted and all cloudiness is gone.

4. Add turmeric powder to ghee. Mix well.

5. Remove frying pan from heat and allow the turmeric mixture to bubble without additional heat for 5 minutes. The mixture will be slightly darker and the scent of the turmeric will be more pronounced.

Prevent A Second Stroke

There are alarming statistics concerning the occurrence of a second stroke in patients who have survived a first. The American Heart Association (AHA)/American Stroke Association (ASA) estimates nearly a third of the strokes which occur every year in the United States are second strokes. Also, physicians contend there is a 40 percent chance of having a second stroke within five years of the first. Fortunately, there are many actions that can be taken to reduce the chances of a reoccurrence.

Instructions

1. Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels closely following a stroke. An increase in one or both can increase your chances of having another stroke. See a physician regularly (at least every three months) for checks. You can also purchase a home blood pressure kit to keep a daily check. A normal blood pressure reading is below 140/90. If you are not already on medications to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, speak for physician regarding your possible need.

2. Cut down on the salt and fat in your regular diet. Try to keep your weight down with proper exercise and diet. Also, consider adding a small glass of wine to your evening meal as a moderate amount of alcohol consumption has been shown to lower the risk of stroke.

3. Stop smoking. Smoking cigarettes can be a key factor in the cause of strokes. Seek medical help to break the habit as there are many helpful aids professionals can provide. Try to stay in smoke free environments to free yourself from the added temptation as well as the second hand smoke.

4. Consult your doctor regarding antithrombotic medications, which prevent the formation of blood clots. The use of antithrombotics is a common defense against the possibility of a second stroke. Be sure to garner information regarding the use of these drugs and prepare for any known side effects.

5. Consider aspirin therapy. Aspirin helps the blood to flow regularly and smoothly throughout the body. Your physician will be able to discuss with you the proper dosage and the frequency with which you need to use this common medication.

6. See your physician to discover whether you have atrial fibrillation. This is an irregular in the rhythm of your heartbeat. If you have it, your physician can help you manage this condition and reduce your chances of having another stroke.

7. Discuss with your physician whether there is a need for surgery to correct blocked arteries. Many strokes are caused by a blockage in the arteries that transport blood from the heart to the brain. There is a surgery referred to as carotid endarterectomy, removes blockages to allow the free flowing of blood and thereby help reduce the chance of a second stroke.

Change Your Diet To Reduce Herpes Outbreaks

Herpes is a virus that causes a wide range of conditions ranging from cold sores on the lips to genital herpes to herpes of the eye to chicken pox and shingles. Because the word "herpes" encompasses so many different conditions, it may seem hard to believe that changing the diet could possibly help with these varied issues. However, because these different versions of the herpes virus all stem from the same basic feature--a virus that lies dormant in the central nervous system and waits to recur--controlling certain aspects of the diet can make a big difference in controlling herpes outbreaks and conditions related to herpes. Twenty percent of adults have genital herpes, and 90+% of all people have the herpes virus that causes cold sores. these two conditions cause pain and discomfort, not to mention social stigma at times. Learning change your diet to reduce herpes outbreaks can make a big difference in your quality of life, your social life, and overall health.

Instructions

Change Your Diet to Reduce Herpes Outbreaks

1. Learn to eat foods that are rich in l-lysine. L-lysine is an amino acid that helps to curb the herpes virus. Foods that are rich in l-lysine include: beef, cheese, chicken, eggs, dairy products, potatoes, fish, yogurt, and soybeans. Do a search to find more information on l-lysine-rich foods if you are vegan; l-lysine is found in many animal products, and you may need to be more creative if you do not consume animal products.

2. Avoid foods high in the amino acid arginine. Oddly enough, many high-arginine foods are extremely healthy, such as brown rice, most nuts, oatmeal, coconut, wheat, raisins, and more. These foods, unfortunately, have a high level of arginine and a low level of l-lysine, making them help the herpes virus during outbreaks.

3. Take l-lysine supplements during outbreaks, or even as a preventive tool. Taking l-lysine regularly throughout the day consistently, even when you are not experiencing an outbreak, can help to prevent future outbreaks or lessen the severity of outbreaks that do break through.

4. Look at the ratio of l-lysine to arginine in foods. If you want to eat a food that has a trace of arginine, but is high in l-lysine, the food should be fine for you to eat, as the l-lysine overwhelmed the arginine.

5. Eat more broccoli or broccoli sprouts. Early research shows that broccoli may inhibit the growth of the herpes virus. So your mom was right--eat your vegetables, but especially your broccoli!

High Protein High Fat Diet

Made popular by Dr. Atkins, a high protein, high fat diet has been touted by many diet gurus as a quick way to jump-start your weight loss. First, though, you should keep a few considerations in mind such as your caloric needs, the general guidelines of the diet and the possible problems and challenges that come with such a diet.

How Many Calories Do You Need?

Before jumping into any diet, it's best to calculate how many calories you need daily. While there are a variety of ways, you can get a ballpark figure by first determining how often you work out. If you are mostly sedentary, meaning you sit at a desk for most of the day, multiple your weight by 14 to find your estimated daily allotment of calories. If you are moderately active, meaning you exercise for at least 30 minutes, 5 days a week, multiply your weight by 17. If you are very active, meaning you rarely sit at work and exercise at least for an hour, 5 days a week, multiple your weight by 20. Keep in mind these are ballpark figures. Your height, genetics, gender and other factors matter. See the Calorie Calculator (Resources section) for more information.

The Diet

Once you find out how many calories you need, break up your diet in the following percentages: 50 percent fat, 35 to 40 percent protein and 10 to 15 percent carbohydrates. In theory, when you reduce carbs, this puts your body in a state of ketosis, where your body is forced to use fat to burn for energy. When relying on high fat and high protein foods, it's important to bear in mind that lean protein sources are the best. Although this is a high fat food, you really only want to get unsaturated fat, which can be found in plant sources like avocado and nuts, which are relatively low in carbs. Of the carbs allowed, you must choose those from vegetables and whole grains. Avoid refined grains, added sugars and most fruit in general.

Considerations

The American Heart Association has warned against high protein, high fat diets, and says Americans get too much protein in their diets as it is. While the AHA approves that whole grains are encouraged, it stresses that the average person only needs 50 to 60 grams of protein daily. Not only is too much protein taxing on your kidneys, but any weight loss you experience is mostly due to water, not fat. Additionally if you do not take care of avoid saturated fats, this can increase your risk for heart disease. Lastly, diets that restrict foods are hard to maintain long-term and make dining out difficult.

Requirements For A Medical Card

Eligibility requirements to obtain a medical card are far less complex than requirements for insurance. Many card providers offer a number of membership programs based on how much of a discount the applicant wishes to receive on health care services. Medical cards typically offer lower rates on health care services such as doctor visits, laboratory testing, vision and dental treatments, prescriptions, and even medical supplies.

Function

Medical cards can be used as complement to health insurance coverage and offer the card holder several discounts and benefits from their preferred health care provider. These cards do not provide insurance coverage, but are used as a way to pay for the costs of certain services, procedures and supplies at a discounted rate. Medical card holders may be required to pay a monthly fee to become a member of the program and will then be eligible to receive discounts and other benefits with participating health care providers.

Eligibility

All medical card providers require applicants to complete an eligibility form that contains personal details including: full name, current address, health insurance provider (if any), social security number, contact phone number, any pre-existing health conditions and employment information. If the company is linked to an insurance provider, this information may simply be transmitted automatically and an offer for the medical card will be extended to the insured. Individuals who seek medical card discount programs on their own may apply for them online. Cardholders must make their monthly or annual membership fee payment in order to receive their discounted rates.

Types

Some of the leading medical card providers include: Alliance Health Card, UnitedHealth Allies, Benicard, ProCare and Companion Care. Each one works with different service providers in select states to offer discounted services and fees; each company also has different membership fees and requirements. Consumers interested in applying for these cards can submit their information online or over the phone.

Benefits

Medical card providers that have achieved a positive standing with the Better Business Bureau do offer value to singles, families, retirees and children who need specialized treatments that are not covered by health insurance. Some medical card programs offer comprehensive discounts on hospitalizations and major surgery, and these discounts may be better than any reimbursement received by a health insurance provider. Ultimately, these programs can help save the cardholder money on health care services they wish to pay out of pocket, or on services that may not be covered by their existing insurance provider.

Warnings

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a warning about medical card scams and providers that promise coverage for certain services but do not offer any type of substantial discount. Consumers are encouraged to do extensive research about their discount program and make sure that the provider is in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. Cardholders should also do research about the health care insurance provider to make sure they are receiving quality health care services regardless of any discounts honored.

Guided Meditations For Children

Meditation is a beneficial practice that can help reduce stress, promote creativity, and help discipline the mind. Children can reap the rewards from meditating if they can learn to sit still. Start your child with guided meditations so that your voice gives them something to focus on during the exercise.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

This is a technique that focuses relaxing one area of their body at a time. This helps kids to concentrate on each body part and prevents their minds from wandering. You can use this technique alone at first, and then use it as an introduction to more lengthy meditations.

Set the mood before meditating. Turn off any noisy distractions. Make the room dim, but not dark. If you think it will help, play relaxing instrumental music in the background or burn incense.

Have the child sit or lie in a comfortable position. In a soft voice, tell him that you are going to help him relax his mind and his body. Have him take in and let out a few deep breaths and close his eyes.

Instruct him to tense up, and then relax, each body part in turn. Start with the left foot, then right foot. Work up the calves, knees, thighs, buttocks, lower back, upper back, hands, arms, shoulders, and neck. For the face, have him tense and relax his jaw, cheeks, eyes, and brow.

After tensing and relaxing each part, tell him to note how warm and comfortable that body part feels, how it sinks into the floor (or bed) and is totally at peace.

After you've worked through the body, allow him to sit and feel relaxed. Start with just two or three minutes, gradually increasing the time spent relaxing with each session.

Bring the child back out of the meditation by asking him to draw attention to each body part again. Tell him to become aware of each part in turn, that he can stretch or flex as he feels comfortable. Have him finally focus on his breathing again, and how he still feels relaxed, but more alert. Ask him to open his eyes and the meditation is over.

Color Meditation

Prepare your environment and begin the session with progressive muscle relaxation as described above. Instruct him to imagine himself walking through a sunny field. Appeal to the senses by painting a picture of warm sunlight and fragrant wildflowers.

Imagine walking into a beautiful forest full of tall trees. The tree's canopy cast shadows on the ground, darkening the area. Have him imagine laying down somewhere comfortable, looking up at the canopy.

The light then turns red. Have him focus on the color absorbing into his skin. Ask him to consider how red makes him feel and what it makes him think about. Tell him he can think about this color whenever he wants to use it's energy and feel those feelings. Move on to orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The breeze then blows the branches aside and he sees he is standing in a rainbow. Enjoy the rainbow for a while, then have him imagine walking out back into the field.

Proceed to ending the meditation by bringing awareness back to his body and breathing.

Dispose of Negative Emotions

Begin again with preparing the environment and progressive muscle relaxation. Again, tell the child he's in a field, but this time the weather is stormy and gray. Paint a picture to appeal to the senses.

He finds a path, and follows it. It winds deeper into the woods until he comes to a clearing. There is a round wooden cover with a large handle in the ground. Have him lift the handle to reveal a deep well.

Have him think about the bad emotions that have been plaguing him. Imagine each thought as a cloud of black smoke rising out of his body and falling into the well. Have him cover the well, reminding him that he has just released those bad emotions.

Have him walk back down the path, and now the field is sunny and bright. Paint a picture of beauty and hope before bringing him back to awareness.

Help Athlete'S Foot With Herbs

You don’t have to be an athlete to get athlete’s foot. This common fungal infection is officially called “Tinea pedis” and can be very annoying, itchy and worrisome. It often starts between the middle toes and spreads rapidly if left untreated. If you have athlete's foot, you can experience scaling, flaking and itching, sometimes accompanied by blisters and cracked skin. With the help of some common herbs such as tea tree, calendula and echinacea, you can begin to experience relief quickly—at least as quickly as with over-the-counter or prescription medications.

Instructions

1. To prevent athlete’s foot, keep shower areas clean and try to keep your feet and shoes as dry as possible at all times. If you know that a family member has athlete’s foot, be sure to apply a disinfectant spray each time that person uses the shower. Good foot hygiene can eliminate athlete’s foot.

2. To kill the fungus, wash all socks, bedding and towels in very hot water. Change linens once each week and continue the hot water wash until the problem appears to be gone.

3. Wash your feet with an anti-fungal soap, which is commercially available. Such soaps often contain tea tree oil and can be effective in controlling the fungus that is responsible for this ailment.

4. Apply aloe vera gel to your entire foot after you bathe, leaving it on until it dries before you put on shoes and socks or bedroom slippers.

5. Wash your bedroom slippers in very hot water, with 10 to 20 drops of tea tree oil in the washing machine.

6. Purchase an anti-fungal foot powder. It will not only keep your feet dry, which is important in depriving the fungus of the moisture it needs to survive, but it can also help to heal your fungal infection.

7. Apply echinacea or calendula cream to affected areas two to three times each day. Continue your treatment after your symptoms are gone because the fungus can easily return.

Pick Fiberrich Grains

Most consumers are aware of the fact that high fiber foods are healthier than processed foods. In response, many people are now making an effort to purchase fiber rich grains. When looking for fiber rich foods in grocery stores, shoppers are often left confused and fooled. Picking fiber rich grains however is more difficult than looking at the label on the package.

Instructions

1. Read the ingredient list on the package. Ingredients are listed in order of the amount of those items that are in the food. If the first ingredient in your multi-grained bread is flour, or wheat, it is not rich in fiber. The first ingredient should say “whole grain."

2. Look at the color of the foods. Foods that are rich in grains are darker than regularly processed foods. For example, brown rice is better than white rice and dark breads are better than white bread.

3. Pick up the foods. Rich fiber foods are heavier than processed foods. When trying to decide which of two-grain items is more fiber rich, pick up equally sized items, one in each hand and purchase the one that is heavier.

4. Look for one-ingredient foods and foods with just a few ingredients: A package of oatmeal should have only one item on the ingredient list: oatmeal. Rice should be just rice. Bread does not need to have a 20-ingredient list. The more ingredients and fillers are added, then more the fiber content will be diluted.

Chinese Medicine For Rheumatoid Arthritis

Chinese medicine has existed for thousands of years. Over time, this field has developed cures and treatments for most ailments that affect humankind; rheumatoid arthritis is no exception. Chinese medicine approaches rheumatoid arthritis as it does other diseases through holistic treatment, focus on total body wellness, and a variety of applications depending on stage and symptoms of the disease.

Facts

Chinese medicine takes three approaches to treating rheumatoid arthritis. These treatments are: herbal remedies, diet, and acupuncture. A traditional practitioner of Chinese medicine will create a customized plan for each patient based on a picture of their total body wellness. Chinese medicine holds that treating the entire body, and not just the problem itself, is necessary to be the most effective and avoid the issue of treating one problem only to have another surface and create additional issues.

Types

According to Xiaomei Cai, a Ph.D. and O.M.D. in traditional Chinese medicine, the larger category of rheumatoid arthritis (called Bi Zheng) is divided into four types: Wind-Cold Bi, Cold-Bi, Dampness-Bi, and Heat-Bi. In order to determine which type a patient is suffering from, a practitioner will examine a patient's pulse and tongue and ask questions about the patient's general physical condition. Dr. Cai suggests the following dietary supplements for each type of rheumatoid arthritis: "For Wind-Bi, adding green onions and ginger to your diet will help expel the Wind. For Cold-Bi, choose black pepper and dry ginger. Soy bean sprouts and pearl barley are beneficial for Dampness-Bi. For Heat -Bi, you should consume mung bean sprouts and winter melon."

Features

Aside from dietary treatments, individuals may undergo acupuncture, which will use needles to target specific points depending on where patients are afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis. Herbal tinctures and supplements will also be administered. According to Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., the most common herbs used are: tang-kuei, siler, licorice, cinnamon, cnidium, peony, achyranthes, chin-chiu, tu-huo, hoelen, rehmannia, eucommia, ginseng, astragalus, asarum; plus dipsacus.

The benefits of using traditional Chinese medicine over Western drugs is that there are fewer risks associated with traditional Chinese medicine. Moreover, its practices that have been tested over thousands of years. Conversely, new pharmaceutical drugs have unknown side-effects that can have negative consequences for patients later in life. Further, Chinese medicine will treat all ailments at once rather than acutely treating your rheumatoid arthritis and leaving other ailments untreated to cause additional ills.

Considerations

Remember that traditional Chinese medicine is an alternative form of medicine and it should be practiced by a licensed practitioner. It can be advantageous to consult your doctor before making any significant changes in your healthcare regime. However, many people have found relief to their ailments from Chinese traditional medicine and other alternative medicine forms. Calm a sore throat with baking soda for a natural remedy to an annoying ailment. A sore throat can be caused by the effects of an infection and the drainage that accompanies a cold or sinus problems.

Use a natural remedy instead of cough drops, which are sugary and may irritate the stomach. When a person has a sore throat, often they have an imbalance and their body is more acidic. Use the following remedy to put the body back in balance.

Instructions

1. Get warm water in a cup. Either run warm water into a cup from the faucet or heat water in the microwave or in a pan on the stove so it is warm but not hot.

It is not safe to drink hot water.

2. Add a teaspoon of baking soda to half a cup or a full cup of water. Stir to dissolve the baking soda.

3. Drink the water. This introduces alkaline to the system to counteract the acid to put the body back in balance.

4. Repeat this process two or three times a day until the sore throat is gone. Often the irritation is gone immediately and the sore throat is relieved.

What Kind Of Preservatives Are Used In Foods

Food preservatives are natural or synthetic substances added to prevent bacterial growth or chemical changes. These substances increase food's shelf life for storage. Methods of food preservation used before additives include drying, salting, sugaring, pickling and cold storage facilities like root cellars. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website, President Abraham Lincoln chose chemist Charles M. Wetherill to head the Department of Agriculture, the forerunner to the FDA. This appointment served as the groundwork for chemical food preservation.

Ascorbic Acid

Ascorbic acid is the natural antioxidant found in citrus fruits like lemons and oranges. Food producers use this antioxidant to preserve fruits, jellies, processed meats and dairy products. It keeps the oil and fats in butter from souring, and other foods from turning brown. This preservative is tasteless when used in most foods.

Sulfites

Sulfites are a group of compounds that naturally occur in foods or are added as preservatives and enhancers. Sulfites prevent bacterial growth, while not interfering with yeast development, in alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, wine coolers, distilled liquors and cocktail mixes. They prevent bruising on light-colored fruit and vegetables like apples and potatoes. Beverages containing sugar and corn syrup employ this food preservative. Other foods that use sulfites include baked goods, condiments, snack foods, fresh and frozen seafood, grains and pasta, dried fruits, shredded coconuts, infant formulas and dairy substitutes. According to the Cleveland Clinic website, you can develop allergic reactions to sulfites, some life-threatening, and should be mindful of foods containing this ingredient.

Sodium Nitrites

Salt has been used as a meat preservative for hundreds of years to prevent meat from spoiling. Nitrites, found in some salts, preserve meat and produce its pink color. According to the University of Minnesota Extension website, nitrites avert the development of botulism in cured meats and slow down spoiling and putrid odors from developing in meat. Nitrites in products like hot dogs, hams and sausage allow you to reheat meat without losing the flavor of spices and the smoking process. Reports about nitrite toxicity have been published since the 1970s; however, the FDA regulates the amount of nitrites that can be used in meat products.

Sorbates

Sorbates, which prevents microorganism growth, include the compounds sorbic acid, potassium sorbate, sodium sorbate and calcium sorbate. The New York State Agricultural Experiment Station at Cornell University website says potassium sorbate, a component of sorbic acid, prevents yeasts, mold and bacteria from developing on cheese, dips, yogurt, sour cream, baked goods and mixes, beverages, icings, pie fillings, dressings and margarine.

Food Labels

The FDA states that all ingredients, including preservatives, have to be listed on food labels. These ingredients have short descriptions like "preservatives," "mold inhibitors" and "to retard spoilage." A list of ingredients helps you identify substances that cause allergies.

Remove Tick Heads

It's fairly common for a tick's head to remain imbedded in your skin when you pull the tick itself away with tweezers, no matter how careful you were about the extraction attempt. If you inspect the tick bite and see that the tick's head or mouth parts are still imbedded, don't panic. You're just a few simple steps away from removing the tick's head from your skin.

Instructions

1. Sterilize the needle by holding it close beside--but not actually inside--a candle, lighter or stove flame. Alternatively, you can soak the pointed end of the needle in a small cup of rubbing alcohol for about a minute.

2. Use the sterilized tip of the needle to carefully fish the tick head away from your skin. Insert the needle into the first or second layers of your skin just beside the tick's head, no through the head. Think of it as removing a splinter, and try to get the needle "hooked" under the head or mouth parts to pull them out.

3. Repeat the process, including sterilization, if necessary, with fine-tipped tweezers; some people will find one method or the other to be much easier.

4. Wash the bite area and your hands thoroughly with soap and water once the tick's head has been extracted.
