Making Scented Wickless Candles

Avoid a melted mess by making a wickless candle.

If you have a clumsy cat at home or an aggressive fire inspector at work, you might not be able to have a burning candle sitting around. But you don't have to give up on fresh or flowery scents. An electric coffee mug warmer can provide enough heat to activate essential oils in a wickless candle and fill the air with a pleasant aroma. You can make your own scented, no-flame-necessary candles with old jars and a few craft products.

Instructions

1. Purchase wax and vials of essential oils from a craft supplier or commercial store. Homemade candles are popular, and many stores carry varieties of wax specific for making wickless candles. A vast selection of fragrant oils is available, with scents ranging from flowers to desserts to clean laundry. Only use one oil per candle to prevent possible unpleasant aromas.

2. Clean your jars with soap and hot water. While not necessarily affecting the quality of the final product, a clean, clear glass jar will be more visually appealing; you can also use a ceramic container or a small flower pot. Selecting jars with sealing lids gives you an option to contain the candle scent when you want to, such as when you're cooking.

3. Melt your wax according to the manufacturer's instructions in a heavy saucepan or microwaveable dish.

4. Mix in several drops of your scented oil and stir the mixture with a spoon. Add more drops as needed until you achieve the intensity of aroma you desire.

5. Add a few drops of dye and check the color of your candle mixture. Continue adding dye until you achieve a pleasant color. If using a ceramic vessel, the dye is optional as you likely will not see much of the wax inside the container.

6. Place your candle container on a trivet or hot pad on your counter. Slowly pour the hot candle mixture from the pan or microwaveable dish into the candle container. Allow the candle to cool completely before moving the container.
