Old records will make a perfect addition to your '50s theme party.
Flash back several decades by creating a '50s theme birthday party. From poodle skirts to greased hair, many items and accessories to complete a '50s theme party are available at local thrifts shops for little cost. Send your party guests home with favors, such as candy buttons, fuzzy dice and yo-yos, as a memento of the party.
Invitations
Create the party invitations using old records. Use a large, round label to make the party invitation and stick it in the center of the record. Tell your guests to wear '50s-style clothes and accessories to the party. Some ideas for outfits include blue jeans, leather jackets, saddle shoes, poodle skirts, cinch belts, bowling shirts and Capri pants. Mail the invitations to your guest in padded envelopes about three weeks before the party; this gives everyone time to find the perfect outfit.
Decorations
Hang old records on the walls and from the ceiling. Play music from the '50s by artists like The Platters and Bobby Darrin. Place inflatable musical instruments all over the party area. A jukebox is the perfect accessory for a '50s party; however, if you do not have one or budget does not allow for renting one, hang a large photo of a jukebox on the wall or use a large inflatable jukebox. Hang rock-n-roll posters on the walls. Cover all the tables with red and white checkered tablecloths.
Food and Drink
Sodas and drive-ins were popular during the '50s, so go with fun food and drink ideas. For food, serve hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, mini pizzas, chicken strips and deli sandwiches. Offer a variety of glass bottle soda pops for drinks. Serve different flavored shakes topped with whipped cream and cherries for dessert.
Games
Have a costume contest by awarding prizes to the best-dressed, most creative and funniest '50s costumes. Play a game of "Name That '50s Tune" by recording several '50s songs on a CD or MP3 player. The guest who can name the most songs and artists wins a prize. You can also divide the guests up and play the game as teams. Other contests for your party guests include a limbo contest, a bubble gum blowing contest using Bazooka gum, a lip-syncing contest, a twist contest and a hula hoop contest.
