Liposuction
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure in which fat cells are physically removed from a human body through the use of suction equipment. When liposuction is performed on a patient's outer thighs, multiple small incisions are made around the target areas for the therapy. A small tube called a cannula is inserted into each incision, and suction is created within the tube using a small motorized aspirator.
Procedure Duration
There is no standard length for the duration of an outer-thigh liposuction treatment, but the majority of these treatments are likely to last between 1 and 2 hours. In order for a liposuction treatment to be administered safely, the procedure must be highly customized to the medical condition and needs of the patient. The surgeon administering the procedure should be able to give the patient a more accurate, customized estimate of procedure length based upon the customized procedural plan and the surgeon's past experience.
Factors Affecting Duration
Numerous factors may affect the length of an outer-thigh liposuction procedure. Cosmetic surgeons closely estimate the amount of fat they intend to remove prior to each surgery, and the greater this amount is, the longer the procedure will take. Surgeons will also customize the number and location of each incision for the patient, and procedures with more incisions will take longer than those with fewer incisions.
Several different types of liposuction involve additional apparatus to assist the suction devices. This auxiliary equipment can include small nozzles for injecting fluid into incisions, lasers for weakening the walls of fat cells and ultrasound devices that can completely emulsify fat cells. The addition of any or all of this extra equipment will involve additional steps, thereby lengthening the process. The most involved outer-thigh liposuction procedures may take as long as 5 hours if enough fat is being removed and enough auxiliary equipment is employed.
