Slow Cavity Decay


Cavities are small holes that slowly eat away at tooth enamel causing decay, pain and even tooth loss. Caused by the formation of plaque which harbors harmful acids and bacteria, you can slow the decay of cavities through proper dental hygiene and the addition of a few simple food items to your regular diet.








Instructions


1. Maintain proper dental hygiene by brushing, flossing and using mouthwash. You should brush and floss every morning and at night before bed, as well as following every meal. Use mouthwash at least twice a day to help slow tooth decay.


2. Choose a fluoride toothpaste, a common compound that helps protect the teeth from decay. Studies show that regular use of fluoride not only slows the decay of cavities, but it can actually reverse cavity growth in the early stages.


3. Reduce your intake of sugary foods and soda drinks, as sugar greatly increase the rate of tooth decay. If you can't fight a sweet tooth, be sure to brush, floss and rinse after eating sugar. If you must chew gum, choose a brand that contains xylitol, a sugar alternative that can actually slow and prevent the decay of cavities.


4. Drink green tea daily. Green tea is naturally rich in fluorine and can help rid the mouth of bacteria and plaque which cause cavities to decay. You can even slow cavity decay by using green tea as a mouthwash or gargle; however, it should not replace your regular medicated mouthwash.


5. Chew licorice root, a tasty treat that can slow tooth decay. Licorice root is a natural antimicrobial that inhibits the bacteria that cause cavities to grow. Remember, licorice root is not a licorice candy, but the actual root of the herb and can be found in your local health food store.
