Certain foods have natural qualities that can ease physical pain. The pain relief a food can bring largely lies in its anti-inflammatory properties, like the presence of antioxidants, amino acids and chemical compounds. But these foods may not be right for everyone. Health problems like diabetes, acid indigestion and food allergies can preclude an individual from trying a specific food for pain management.
Cherries
Cherries are a natural shade a deep red because of elevated levels of anthocyacins, which have anti-inflammatory effects akin to aspirin. Research suggests that cherries can effectively counter the pain of gout and arthritis.
Grapes
Grapes have anti-inflammatory properties that mimic a COX-2 inhibitor, like Vioxx. Grape skins contain Resveratrol, a phytoalexin that's been shown to prevent cell inflammation.
Nuts & Seeds
Both nuts and seeds are good sources of tryptophan. Tryptophan is an amino acid that's been shown to have a soothing effect on the body, including a reduction of physical sensitivity to pain.
Olive Oil
In addition to monounsaturated fat and antioxidants, olive oil is a wholesome source of oleocanthal. The natural compound behaves like an non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug and inhibits prostaglandins which cause inflammation and pain. Since extra virgin olive oil will have higher concentrations of these components, it is more efficient at pain relief.
Soy
In a clinical study of 135 men and women with osteoarthritis, individuals who consumed 40 grams of soy protein daily for 3 months reported fewer aches and an improved range of motion. While it hasn't been determined how soy produces this effect, its rich isoflavone content is believed to block cell inflammation.
Sugar
Research has shown that sugar consumption diminishes perception to pain and enhances the body's natural relief system. In particular, chocolate is a sugar-rich food that has been observed to ease physical pain.
