People with kidney disease are often prescribed a renal diet. Retaining fluid is common with decreased kidney function. For this reason, fluid intake may be restricted. Phosphorus, potassium and sodium may be monitored to maintain electrolyte balance. The breakdown of protein creates urea, which may build up in the system. Lowering protein consumption may be necessary. Talk to your doctor before making any dietary changes. Consider this information from the Medical College of Wisconsin and the National Library of Medicine.
Phosphorus
Broccoli, zucchini, hard candy, sherbet, non-cola drinks and non-dairy milk substitutes are all low in phosphorus. Use small portion sizes.
Potassium
Foods low in potassium include apples, grapes, pears, watermelon, cranberries, cherries, cucumbers, beans, onions, lettuce, carrots, pasta, cereals and breads.
Protein
Choose fresh or plain frozen meats, such as poultry and seafood. Eggs, beans, grains and unsalted vegetables are also options.
Sodium
Season foods with a variety of spices to avoid salt. Eat homemade soups with no salt and purchase unsalted snack foods only.
Fluids
Anything that is liquid or melts into a liquid is considered to be a fluid. Measure all fluids to monitor intake.
