Serevent, also generically known as salmeterol, is a drug used to treat the occurrence of asthma attacks. As is the case with prescription drugs, side effects ranging in severity may occur based on the dose size and the individual.
Identification
Serevent is a prescription drug that specifically relaxes the muscles in the walls of the bronchial tubes so that more air is allowed to pass through. It is used primarily in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Examples of COPD include bronchitis and emphysema. Serevent, however, will not effectively treat an asthma attack that has already begun. Serevent is available in two forms: as an aerosol inhaler and an inhalation powder.
Common Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, the use of Serevent may cause the following common, less serious side effects: headache; dizziness; sweating; nausea; dry mouth; vomiting; and diarrhea. In two 12-week placebo controlled clinical trials, the preceding side effects occurred in less than 3 percent of the patients. Although these side effects are common and less serious, if one or several persist or intensify, seek immediate medical attention.
Serious Side Effects
Side effects of using Serevent that are serious and require immediate medical attention include: chest pain; pounding or irregular heartbeat; severe skin rash; numbness, pain, and muscle weakness; worsening asthma symptoms; wheezing or difficulty in breathing and tremors. These are side effects that require immediate medical attention and should be treated seriously. Do not hesitate to consult a doctor or medical professional.
Using Serevent
Serevent should be used specific to a doctor's prescription. Do not increase the dose or extend the time frame of use. In the case of exercise-induced asthma, use Serevent 30 minutes before the start of exercise. Serevent is not a fast-acting asthma medication and should not be used to treat an asthma attack that has already begun. In order to be effective, Serevent should be used twice daily at intervals 12 hours apart.
Warning
Never take a double dose of Serevent to make up for a missed or skipped dose. Serevent should not be used to treat worsening asthma. Use Serevent carefully if you have high blood pressure is it may cause an increase in heart rate. Never stop use of the product without first notifying your doctor.
