The Epimedium Species

Epimedium, also called barrenwort, horny goat weed and fairy wings, is a genus of evergreen or deciduous flowering plants native to Asia and Europe. Growers cultivate Epimedium species for their ornamental qualities as well as their purported medicinal uses.

Identification

Epimedium plants grow between 6 and 12 inches tall depending on the species and cultivar. They have heart- or lance-shaped, reddish leaves that turn green as they mature. Some varieties have a spreading form, while others clump together in dense mounds. Epimedium plants produce 4-petaled flowers in colors ranging from white to purple.

Types

Several common species of Epimedium include longspur barrenwort (Epimedium grandiflorum) which is characterized by heart-shaped, light-green leaves and purple, pink, yellow or white blossoms; Epimedium diphyllum, which grows around 7 inches tall and produces white blossoms; and Epimedium x rubrum or red epimedium, which has small blossoms and reddish leaves.

Considerations

Epimedium plants prefer nutrient-rich, well-drained neutral or acidic soil and either partial or full shade. They are susceptible to mosaic virus. Rabbits, vine weevils and chewing insects feed on the plants.
