Foot tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendon and ligaments that attach to the bone in the ankle. Tendinitis may be caused by repetitive movements--too much exercise, overuse or lack of proper warm up. Common symptoms include pain with movement, swelling, a crackling sound and tenderness. If untreated, tendinitis could become a chronic condition.
Anti-inflammatories
Anti-inflammatory drugs, either prescription or over-the-counter, can reduce pain and inflammation in the ankle.
Ice and Rest
Use ice on the area for 15 to 20 minutes several times a day. Rest the ankle as much as possible, taking care not to exercise, run or do other strenuous physical activity.
Chiropractic
Chiropractors commonly treat foot tendinitis. They use joint manipulation for people who have limited mobility in the ankle joint. Chiropractors also use ultrasound treatments, electrical muscle stimulation, massage and manual trigger point therapy--which applies firm pressure to the source of pain and gently stretches the muscles of the ankle.
Supplements
Supplements can help heal the tendons and ligaments, reduce inflammation and boost the immune system. Suggested supplements include calcium, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E and evening primrose oil.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture may bring relief from foot tendinitis for some people. Acupuncturists concentrate on the liver and gallbladder meridians. After inserting the acupuncture needles, the acupuncturist may use a technique called moxibustion. This technique is performed by burning the herb mugwort over a specific acupuncture point. It will be done to painful areas and any sore points related to the injury.
Herbs
Before beginning any treatment with herbs, consult a physician to see whether the herbs will interact with medicines he prescribes.
Common herbal supplements that can be taken for tendinitis include bromelain to reduce swelling and inflammation, licorice for inflammation, cat's claw, devil's claw, boswellia, white willow for pain and curcumin.
Homeopathy
Homeopathic remedies that some people may use for tendinitis are an Arnica cream combined with Calendula officinalis, Hamamelis virginiana, Aconitum napellus, and Belladona. The cream is applied three and six times a day.
