Health Insurance In The Philippines

According to the Allianz website, a combination of private and public institutions provide health care in the Philippines. A national health-care system provides affordable health insurance to the majority of residents of the Philippines.

History

The government of the Philippines began providing health-care services in rural areas of the country in the early 1960s, reports the PhilHealth website. Legislation enacted in 1971 began a Medicare-type program followed by the establishment of the government-sponsored Philippines Health Insurance Corporation, also known as PhilHealth, in 1995.

Social

PhilHealth reports that its mission is to provide social health care for all Filipinos and residents of the Philippines. Payments are made into the national health insurance program through contributions from employers and individuals covering about 80 percent of Filipinos enrolled in PhilHealth.

Institutions

Residents of the Philippines have the right to choose between private and public health care, including hospitals, doctors and dentists. The Allianz website reports that government-sponsored medical institutions uphold similar standards as their private counterparts.
