Stay Safe During A Blizzard

Sometimes the pretty white snow falling from the sky can turn into a very dangerous weather condition, a Blizzard. While it may be fun to go outside and play, that is not a safe decision. A blizzard consists of high winds usually above 35 miles per hour and temperatures below 20°. During a blizzard you cannot see very far, usually less than ¼ of a mile and during a severe blizzard the visibility can be much less than that.

Instructions

1. Stay inside your house. A house offers the most protection from the strong, punishing winds, the extreme cold and snow.

2. Dress in layers if you absolutely have to leave your house. Be sure to cover your mouth and nose with a scarf or full ski mask to protect your lungs from the extreme cold. Wear a hat, gloves and insulated snow boots along with layered clothing under your coat.

3. Keep the temperature inside your house at your normal levels. Do not turn your heat up high or add extra wood to your fireplace. These can be a cause for fire or carbon monoxide poisoning and if your can't get out, emergency response time will be markedly slowed also.

4. Stay in one room if you have lost power. Use towels to seal cracks under doors. Layer clothing and blankets for warmth during a blizzard.

5. Listen to a battery power radio for any updates from local authorities.
