Stop An Itch

Mosquito bites, rashes, hives, flea bites, poison ivy, chicken pox, eczema and just plain old dry skin: What do they have in common? They all make you itch. There are many creams and ointments you can buy to try to stop the itching, but you can also save money by trying a few of home remedies.

Instructions

1. Make a paste with baking soda and a few drops of water of water, and apply to the itchy spot, leaving it on as long as you can. If you have an all over itch problem, you can take a baking soda bath. Just add one box of baking soda to your bath water (no soap), and soak for 20 to 30 minutes. Do not rinse off.

2. Put some dry oatmeal in a blender, and blend to make an oatmeal powder. Make an oatmeal paste by mixing the ground oatmeal with a small amount of water. Apply to the itchy spot, and leave it on as long as you can. You can also take an oatmeal bath for all over soothing. Put 2 cups of whole grain oatmeal in a fine mesh net (a cut off leg of panty hose works great) and tie off the netting so the oatmeal will not actually be loose in your tub. Put the bag of oatmeal in your bath water, and squeeze the bag to get the oatmeal "milk" to mix with the water. Soak in the tub for 20 to 30 minutes. Do not use soap and do not rinse off.

3. Go to the beach. One of the best cures for any kind of itchy skin ailment is good old salty ocean water. So pack up your towel and beach chair and hit the beach as part of your home remedy therapy. Soak or swim in the saltwater for 20 to 30 minutes. Then dry off and get just 5 minutes of sun. Skip the sun screen because it may cause more irritation.

4. If you can stand it, take a cold shower or soak in a tub of cold water. Chilling relieves itching by temporarily reducing blood circulation to the itchy areas, which helps to reduce swelling and inflammation.
