Zegerid is a prescription medication that is a combination of omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor and sodium bicarbonate is an antacid. The sodium bicarbonate helps the body to absorb the omeprazole more easily. This medication must be taken with water only while the stomach is empty at least an hour before eating.
Duodenal Ulcers
Zegerid is used to treat duodenal ulcers. These are ulcers that develop in the intestines.
Stomach Ulcers
Zegerid is also used to treat ulcers that develop in the stomach.
Erosive Esophagitis
Zegerid may also be prescribed to treat erosive esophagitis. Erosive esophagitis is a condition that occurs when the esophagus swells and becomes inflamed after repeated exposure to stomach acids backing up from the stomach.
GERD
Zegerid may be prescribed to help alleviate symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Side Effects
Some individuals who take Zegerid may experience coughing, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, rashes and possibly an upper respiratory infection.
