Natural Sleep Remedies For Adults

Those suffering with insomnia have difficulty falling or staying asleep.

Between 50 and 70 million Americans suffer with sleep disorders, especially insomnia. Insomnia is a condition that causes difficulty in falling or staying asleep. There are two types: primary insomnia and secondary (comorbid) insomnia. An average of eight out of 10 individuals who suffer with this disorder are thought to suffer from secondary insomnia caused by illnesses, medication and substance intake, among other causes. Primary insomnia is usually caused by long-term stress and severe emotional situations.

Valerian

The natural sleep remedy Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is an herb that comes from a perennial-type plant originating from Asia and Europe. It has been used since the days of ancient Rome, and it's sold as a supplement in the United States, working as a mild sedative and aiding individuals who suffer with nervous tension and insomnia. The supplement is made using the plant's roots and stems.

Melatonin

A single melatonin hormone structure

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a naturally produced hormone that forms in the brain by the pineal gland. It is regularly used as an alternative sleep remedy for individuals who are suffering from jet lag, insomnia and other conditions, including ADHD, epilepsy, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and sunburn. If used as a natural sleep remedy, adults should take between one to three milligrams of melatonin an hour before bedtime. Do not take a higher dosage without medical advice, as melatonin in high doses can cause further anxieties. Melatonin is sold in capsules, cream, lozenges and tablets, but it's best to consult your doctor before taking the supplement. Side effects can include decreased libido and sperm count, dizziness, headaches, irritability, male breast enlargement (gynecomastia) and stomach cramps. Pregnant women are advised not to take this product during pregnancy and breast feeding.
