Bunion Brace Work

Relieves Pain

A bunion brace is a specially designed foot aid which relieves the discomfort of bunions by padding the area around the bunion to minimize pressure and irritation. Foot bunions are caused by bony protrusions that result in painful friction and pain when walking, especially when wearing shoes. Bunion braces can be worn with or without shoes. They are designed to wrap around the big toe, and this holds it in the proper position. Bunion braces should be properly sized to match the contour of the foot and shoe in order to be effective. They should be made of breathable synthetic material to reduce heat buildup, minimize sweating and prevent irritation.

Prevents Further Damage

Bunion braces prevent bunions from getting worse, which is adequate treatment in mild cases. They can delay surgery in severe cases. Bunion braces provide corrective force to prevent bunions from worsening. In cases of severe bunions, braces can be worn at night to keep the big toe properly aligned with the rest of the foot. This stretches out the muscles and tendons, helps correct the underlying cause of the bunions and relieves the continuous ache many people experience.

Post-Operative Protection

Following surgical correction of bunions, braces can be worn to protect any incisions and painful areas. Bunion braces worn after surgery will also help hold the toes in place, which prevents future bunions from forming. Anyone with poor circulation in his feet--such as diabetics and those with cardiovascular disorders--should not wear a bunion brace post-operatively unless advised to do so by his treating physician.
