Oil Treatments For Thinning Hair

Get thicker, healthier hair by incorporating oils into your hair routine.

There are a number of treatments on the market today for thinning hair, but the use of oils is a natural way to improve the hair's condition and stimulate hair growth. Many types of oils have been found to be beneficial for the hair---repairing, strengthening and conditioning the hair shaft. They also cleanse and condition the scalp.

Types of Oils

Essential oils, which are extracted from plants, can assist in the growth of the hair by stimulating the scalp and conditioning the hair strands, preventing breakage. According to Taruna Oils, studies suggest that one or more of the essential oils are biologically able to promote hair growth, cleansing, nourishing and strengthening the hair follicle and shaft. Some essential oils related to hair growth and repair include jojoba, burdock, rosemary, clary sage, tea tree, basil, peppermint, citrus, lavender, olive and bay. Emu oil, an oil made from the fat of emus, has also been found to grow hair. According to Healthy Hair Plus, it contains omega-3 fatty acids, which hair must have to grow properly. Castor oil, a vegetable oil from the castor bean, also aids in hair growth. According to Skinverse, "The anti-bacterial and anti-fungicidal properties of ricinoleic acid in castor oil protects the scalp and hair from infections which can cause hair loss. The omega-9 fatty acids in castor oil also nourish the hair and prevent the scalp from drying."

Hot Oil Treatments

Hot oil treatments can protect the hair shaft and provide moisture and strength, preventing breakage, which can cause thinner hair. According to Ayurvedic Cure, hot oil treatments can provide strength and body to dry hair and the restoration process has a nearly immediate effect. It is best to use natural oils to prevent product build-up on the scalp, which can damage the hair.

Oil Massage

Massage the scalp with natural oils, which can greatly improve the hair's condition. Scalp massage increases blood circulation to the hair follicles. According to Hair Loss Expert, increased blood circulation to the hair follicles allows the cells of the hair follicles to receive more of the nutrients necessary for optimal hair growth function. It is also stated that massage can lower stress levels, which allows "your organs to function more efficiently, thus boosting your hair follicle's ability to grow hair," states Hair Loss Expert. The combination of massage and the benefits of the oils used improves the hair's growth and condition by increasing blood flow and strengthening the hair.
