Avoid Petroleum Based Products

Oil dependency is at the root of the economic crisis of the early 2000s, but oil for fuel isn't the only consumption issue. Petroleum-based products, plastics being a large part, depend on oil. Reducing your consumption of petroleum based products is environmentally conscious, but it will require substantial research. However, general categories of products that use petroleum will help you reduce your personal dependence on oil.

1. According to the National Candle Association, 70 percent of U.S. households purchase and burn candles. Parrafin wax is a petroleum-based product and is used in many tocandles. Choose alternatives such as 100 percent beeswax or soy-based candles instead.


2. Check labels on cleaning products and cosmetics for petroleum, paraffin, naptha, and formaldehyde. Yes, items such as lip gloss, face powder, nail polish, and bathroom cleaner may include petroleum products, including the packaging. 3. Buy products that do not come with a plastic container, film or packaging. Shop with reusable canvas or cotton bags.


4. Buy a stainless steel water bottle rather than disposable or plastic bottles.


5. Look for soy-based inks and coloring tools, instead of regular pens and crayons.
