Essential oils have been used for skin care for hundreds of years. That said, essential oils recently have become more popular for use in skin care products. Many essential oils are ideal for treating acne-prone skin. Some essential oils for acne can be used alone. Once you know which essential oils are best for acne treatment you can add them to your skin care regimen.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree essential oil has many medicinal uses. However, it is perhaps best known as an essential oil for acne. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic, so it is quite effective at killing the bacteria that cause some acne. It also acts well as an astringent, so it tones the skin too. It can be used undiluted on a cotton ball. If it irritates the skin, dilute it with water or a carrier oil such as tamanu.
Juniper
Juniper essential oil is another essential oil for acne treatment. It works well for treating acne-prone skin because it is a natural antiseptic and toner. It also helps stimulate circulation, so it keeps the skin healthy. Plus, juniper has a nice aroma that is favorable to most people. As with tea tree oil, juniper oil can be used undiluted with a cotton ball or diluted with a carrier oil if it causes irritation.
Lemon
Lemon essential oil is also great for treating acne-prone skin. It has a cooling sensation and is an antiseptic and astringent. Plus, it is filled with skin-protecting antioxidants. Lemon essential oil can be used identically to juniper and tea tree oils.
Sandalwood
Sandalwood oil is another essential oil that can be used for acne treatment. It is a mild astringent so it is less irritating than some of the other essential oils. Plus, it is a natural anti-inflammatory so it will reduce the inflammation acne causes in some cases.
