Ease the Symptoms of Varicose Veins
Most people who have varicose veins have them in their legs and feet. Varicose veins can range from unsightly to painful. There are invasive surgical procedures and laser treatments that can be performed by doctors to treat varicose veins. If you have varicose veins you should see your doctor to be sure there are no other dangerous circulatory issues. Varicose veins are different than spider veins, spider veins are smaller veins and are mostly a cosmetic problem. Varicose veins tend to be larger, swollen veins.
Instructions
1. Wear support hose. Support hose will help to push the blood away from the surface of the skin down to deep veins.
2. Lay flat on your back and elevate your legs as high as possible. Rest your legs against a chair, wall or stack of pillows. This will make the blood flow away from your legs. Stay in this position for 2 to 3 minutes several times per day.
3. Raise the foot of your bed. Either place something under the foot of your mattress or under the legs of your bed. If you suffer from any type of pulmonary or heart condition, ask your doctor before sleeping in this position.
4. Stay away from shoes with heels. These type of shoes can make the discomfort of varicose veins worse by adding extra pressure to your legs.
5. Do not smoke. Smoking can worsen varicose vein symptoms because smoking lessens blood flow.
6. Eat properly. Maintain a healthy diet and weight. Extra weight will put more pressure on your legs, increasing pain.
7. Exercise to keep good blood flow to your legs. Swimming is best because the water will relieve pressure on your legs.
8. Sit in a balanced position. Do not sit on your leg or cross your legs.
9. Move around every 45 minutes to an hour when sitting for a long period of time.
10. Take breaks from standing for a long period of time.
