Xerosis is the generic medical name for dry skin usually with scaliness. The scaliness that is normally associated with dry skin is called pruritus. Xerosis can be a simple issue of skin that is too dry because the natural moisture in your skin has been depleted or it can turn into a more serious skin condition that needs to be treated by a medical professional. One common condition that can start as simple Xerosis include eczema, which is when the sky becomes itchy, cracked, oozy, red, or it can even bleed. Severe Xerosis can also cause infection due to the itching or simple cracking from the dryness. Many times these conditions can be prevented before you have to take a trip to the doctor with some simple steps. Xerosis can happen anytime of the year, but home heating in the winter makes conditions for dry skin even more prevalent.
Instructions
Prevent Xerosis
1. Try taking baths or showers that are lower in temperature. The heat from the water depleted the skin of its nature moisturizers. If you do take a very hot shower or bath, try shortening the amount of time you spend under the water.
2. Apply emollient lotion or cream to the skin after bathing and often throughout the day. Look at the ingredients and stay away from lotions with propylene, salicylate, lactic acid, vitamin A, and urea. These are known as keratolytic agents and they aren't as good at moisturizing the skin as emollient lotions or creams. If you aren't sure which over-the-counter ointment is best, as the pharmacist.
3. Use a humidifier in your home if you think your heating is causing or adding to the Xerosis. You can purchase one at any local hardware or home store. Some furnaces come equipped with a humidifier as well that can help, but in severe cases you may still want to use a portable unit.
4. Drink plenty of water. It's good for your skin and will helps it heal faster.
