Herbal Treatment For Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by deer tick or black-legged tick bites. A round red mark with a white center that resembles a "bull's eye" is the first sign of the condition. As the infection moves through the body, it can cause fatigue, headache, heart palpitations, muscle pain, nausea and vomiting. There are natural treatments that can help remedy the condition. Be sure to consult with a knowledgeable practitioner of herbal and/or naturopathic medicine if you decide to treat this condition naturally.

Herbal Treatments

Cat's claw is a powerful immune stimulant with a long history of traditional use. Take 2,000 milligrams daily. Echinacea and ginseng taken together reinforce the benefits of the other. This combination increases the action of immune cells known as natural killer cells (NK), which can destroy the infection. It can also fight any secondary infections that can crop up. Take the echinacea tincture as directed on the label. Drink ginseng tea by seeping 1 tsp in 1 cup of hot water. Drink 1 cup a day. These two things do not need to be consumed at the same time to work. Kudzu relieves face and neck muscle tension that can occur as a result of the disease. Take 10 milligrams three times a day. Lentinan reverses fever and fatigue and activates T-helper cells, the immune cells that are responsible for destroying harmful organisms like bacteria and viruses. Use the powder in a dosage determined by a health care provider. Licorice can halt progression of neurological symptoms that sometimes present themselves and fights chronic fatigue. Use glycyrrhizin tablets at 800 milligrams daily. Use for six weeks and take two weeks off in between cycles. Maitake stimulates immune function and fights off infection. Take 500 milligrams three times daily. Red clover is a powerful blood cleanser. Take the extract as directed on the label. Scutelleria has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine as a strong antibacterial and antiviral agent. Take 2,000 milligrams three times daily. Siberian ginseng fights stress and increases immune function. Take the extract as directed on the label. St. John's wort fights mental fatigue and alleviates inflammatory reactions. Take 900 milligrams daily.

Do not use cat's claw if you take insulin for diabetes or are pregnant or nursing. Stay away from echinacea and Siberian ginseng if you have any sort of autoimmune disease such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Avoid licorice if you have glaucoma, high blood pressure, or an estrogen dependent disorder such as breast cancer, endometriosis or fibrocystic breasts. If you have diarrhea, do not take scutellaria.

Be sure to maintain sufficient amounts of Vitamin A in your system by eating at least 1 serving daily of dark-green, yellow or orange fruits and vegetables. A study published in the October 1996 Journal of Infectious Disease found that deficiencies of this vitamin increased the chances of getting arthritis. This condition can result in some people infected with Lyme disease. Get out in the sun for 15 to 20 minutes daily to stimulate sufficient vitamin D stores in the body. This can help retard the development of arthritis. Include lots of garlic in your diet or take a supplement as directed on the label. It is a well known natural antibiotic and immune booster.
