The Atkins diet is a low-carb diet. This means you aren't allowed to eat any refined sugar, although later in the diet you are allowed some natural sugars like fruits. At first, it may sound impossible to give up sugar. However, you really can do it and it will get easier with time. That's because the first two weeks is all about getting the sugar and carbs out of your system. When you are not eating any carbs your body will go into ketosis where it burns fat for energy since there are no carbs to burn. But, once you reach the second or third phases of the diet you can indulge your sweet tooth with no-sugar-added desserts and ice cream. There are a whole line of desserts that are low carb and perfect for people on the Atkins diet.


3. Reading labels is an important way to balance your sugar intake on the Atkins diet. It's hard to know what has high sugar content and what doesn't, so always read labels. There are plenty of things that will surprise you with the added sugar content, so always read labels before you eat anything.
