Papworth Breathing Technique

Asthma may prevent you from completing daily routines or experiencing life to its fullest. But there are treatments that can help. The Papworth Breathing Technique, created in the 1960s to aid in asthma, is still being used today.

What is Asthma?

Know what you're up against before beginning the technique. Asthma is a simple term for a not-so-simple condition, and it cannot be cured, only treated. It's a chronic lung disease and could have occurred at any time in your life. If you have asthma, your airways are always inflamed and they then constrict when you try to breathe. The muscles around your airways tighten, narrow and don't allow air to fully pass through your lungs. You therefore have difficulty breathing that can occur at any time. Once you have an asthma attack, it typically lingers. You may experience severe wheezing when trying to breathe, shortness of breath and tightness in your chest, followed by a long coughing bout.

The Papworth Breathing Technique for Asthma

Try this breathing and relaxation technique. Having control over your breathing using the Papworth method can help you prevent asthma attacks from occurring by one-third.

The breathing technique teaches you use your diaphragm and practice relaxing the muscles. Knowing what muscles assist in the breathing process is extremely important in being able to control them. Also, the way you breathe through your nose is important because you learn create a steady breathing pattern. Don't breathe too fast or too deeply; that can set off an asthma attack.
