Birth Control Pills Pros & Cons

Birth control pills are 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy.

The pill has been the first choice of women to help prevent unwanted pregnancy since 1960. Birth control pills are highly effective at preventing pregnancy and are relatively easy to get. Your doctor can prescribe them at a simple check-up, which makes them a good choice for preventing an unplanned pregnancy.

Types of Birth Control Pills

There are two types of birth control pills: combination pills and "minipills." Combination pills contain both estrogen and progestin while "minipills" contain progestin only. Each pill is highly effective in preventing pregnancy. Combination pills adjust a woman's hormone levels to prevent a monthly spike in estrogen that causes ovulation. The "minipill" simply blocks ovulation hormones to prevent pregnancy. Both pills thicken the lining of the cervix, which blocks sperm from passing through.

Pros of Using Birth Control Pills

Both types of birth control pills have advantages such as a 99 percent effectiveness rate, regular menstrual cycles and less facial acne. Other advantages may include a decrease in menstrual cramping as well as a decrease in bloating. There also may be a decrease in premenstrual (PMS) moodiness, headaches and tension.

Cons of Using Birth Control Pills

Cons of using birth control pills may include a sickening feeling in your stomach, breasts may be sore to the touch, and your sex drive may decrease significantly. If you develop high blood pressure, are feeling dizzy or lightheaded, or experience extreme pain in your lower abdomen, you should contact your doctor immediately, as these may be serious side effects of the medication.

Alternatives to Birth Control Pills

Male condoms, spermicidal lubricant and female diaphragms are all effective birth control methods. Lesser known alternatives include the NuvaRing (a vaginal ring inserted for three weeks at a time) and the Ortho Evra patch (a patch worn on the hip that allows hormones to pass through). The effectiveness of each alternative varies and should be discussed with your doctor before use.
