Acupressure For Tooth Pain

Tooth pain, which can be excruciating, is the body's way of signaling that something is wrong. If you're unable to see your dentist immediately, acupressure is an alternative. It's a natural remedy to soothe pain and can provide immediate toothache relief.

History

Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing practice that dates back almost 5,000 years. Unlike acupuncture, where needles are inserted at specific points in the body, acupressure is noninvasive and only uses pressure from your fingers on specific parts of your body known as meridians.

According to Chinese philosophy, the basic principle for harmonious and balanced living is the concept of yin and yang. When the body is in pain, it is out of balance. The idea of acupressure is to bring the body back into alignment by releasing any pain and balancing the energies of yin and yang.

What is Acupressure?

There are specific points on your body that release endorphins when stimulated, which are the pleasure hormones of the brain. When applying pressure on these meridian points, you release tension, enhance blood circulation and allow your body to relax naturally. Using your fingers and applying firm pressure to these trigger points can provide immediate relief from pain and tension.

Function

According to Dr. Jacob Trager, D.D.S, there is an acupressure point located between your thumb and index finger in the web portion of your hand. To relieve tooth pain, Dr. Trager suggests you apply pressure to this area for about two minutes. The pressure must be applied to the hand on the same side as the dental pain. Additionally, Dr. Trager recommends running an ice cube in the same web area to reduce the ache. Rest for 10 minutes, and then repeat for two minutes.

Benefits

Applying acupressure methods for tooth pain can provide immediate relief without having to use any type of pain medication.

Considerations

Though pain relief using acupressure is immediate, it is also temporary. If the pain continues, you must see your dentist. There are a variety of reasons as to what might be causing the toothache, and the pain will continue to worsen if you do not have a professional look at the problem. Pregnant women should use caution when applying acupressure, as certain pressure points may induce labor.
