Side Effects Of Red Yeast Rice Capsules

Images of capsules

Red yeast rice is a dietary staple in many Asian countries and is made by growing yeast on rice. It is available in supplement form and contains a compound called monacolins, which may be beneficial in reducing LDL, or "bad" cholesterol. The same monacolin compound is found in some cholesterol-lowering prescription drugs. While consumption of red yeast rice may offer some health benefits, there may be some side effects as well. Note that red yeast rice supplements have not been approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for consumption. Always consult a doctor with any questions.

Liver Problems

Individuals with liver problems should not consume red yeast rice capsules, as the supplement may worsen this condition by breaking down skeletal muscle tissue. Consumption of alcohol may contribute to liver problems when taking red yeast rice supplements.

Abdominal Discomfort

According to Medline Plus, some individuals who consume red yeast rice capsules may experience some stomach upset, including bloating and nausea.

Increased Risk of Bleeding

Consumption of red yeast rice capsules may increase the likelihood of bleeding. Individuals who experience bleeding disorders or are taking drugs that also increase the risk of bleeding should consult a physician before taking red yeast rice capsules.

Mild Discomfort

Side effects such as headache, dizziness, heartburn and/or muscle pain may occur when taking red yeast rice capsules. If any of these symptoms occur, discontinue use and consult a doctor.
