The smell of lavendar helps you relax and could lead to a better night's rest.
If you're having trouble getting to sleep at night, a common home remedy or natural cure could help you get better rest. From drinking tea to thinking about your day in a different way, home remedies for sleep problems run the gamut, but they're less expensive than a trip to the doctor or a prescription.
Get on a Schedule
Before you try anything else, get your body on a regular sleep schedule. Varying the number of hours you sleep or when you sleep can cause problems with your bodies internal rhythms, making it difficult for you to sleep when you want to and making your body constantly fatigued. Set a time for sleep and stick with it for at least few weeks before deciding to try another option with your schedule.
Relax with Milk or a Snack
According to The Herb Companion website, drinking a glass of warm milk with a little honey right before bed can help you relax and get some sleep. Eating a light snack such as a little fruit or bread, about an hour or two before bedtime can also help keep you from waking up hungry in the middle of the night, but avoid caffeine, heavy meals and sugary foods such as candy before bed. These types of food can keep your body from relaxing, preventing sleep.
Get More Minerals and Nutrients
If you're not getting enough of certain types of nutrients, it can cause you to have difficulty sleeping. The most common sleeplessness culprits are calcium, magnesium, vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-1, which is also known as niacin. You can get any of these nutrients as an over-the-counter supplement to help alleviate any deficiency. Although supplement size varies, Herb Companion Magazine recommended taking 500 mg of calcium, 250 mg of magnesium, 50 mg of B-6 or 500 mg of niacin before bed. Vitamins B-6 and B-1 should be taken together for best results. Calcium and magnesium are also commonly taken together and even often come together in a single supplement.
Valerian
A number of different home herbal remedies are recommended to help alleviate insomnia or other sleep problems. Placing a few drops of lavender on your pillow before you go to sleep every night can help the body relax and sleep. If you only have sleepless nights occasionally, take 600 to 900 mg of valerian nightly to help your body drift off to sleep and keep from waking throughout the night. Other herbs, such as skullcap and chamomile, are also often used as sleep aids. According to The Herb Companion website, users should have 2 tsp. of dried chamomile in a tea up to three times daily. If you prefer skullcap, take 1,200 mg before bed to help with sleep. Skullcap is often used in conjunction with other herbs to alleviate restless sleep.
