Which Essential Oils Repel Bugs

Naturally get rid of insects in your home or yard using essential oil remedies.

There's no need to use toxic insect repellents, especially if you have children or pets that could get hurt around these substances. Essential oil remedies can be used in place of chemical pest control products and will do just as good a job, if not better, of keeping your pest problems under control. You won't have the added worry of having toxins in your home, either.

Ants

Ants aren't very hard to get rid of if you know what really bothers them. They are mostly repelled by anything that smells like mint. Purchase essential oils such as spearmint, peppermint or wintergreen. Mix about 10 drops of the oil with water in a plastic spray bottle and use that around the areas you've seen ants. If they're heavily concentrated in one area, use the straight oil and drip it where the ants are coming in, and they won't cross the line of scented oil.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are repelled by citronella, which is a lemon-scented citrus essential oil. You can also use lavender, pennyroyal or lemongrass. Mix 10 drops in a spray bottle with water and spray it on your body before you go outside.

Fleas

Fleas are not easy to get rid of, but there are some oils that will help you. Eucalyptus oil, orange, lavender and anything mint-scented will help keep fleas away. Mix 10 to 15 drops with water in a plastic spray bottle and use on your pet's bedding, the carpet and furniture where pets like to lie. It's even safe to spray on your own bedding and carpet.

Flies

Repel flies by using citronella, lavender, rosemary, sage, geranium or juniper oils. Mix about 10 drops with water and spray it into the air to keep flies at bay in your home or around your patio outdoors.
