Properly Cleanse Your Colon

Colon cleansing is a popular natural medicine treatment that has drawn mixed reviews from traditional medical sources. Though some physicians remain skeptical of any benefits of cleansing your colon, few suggest that if done properly it can be harmful. On one hand, colon cleansing proponents are legion, and they boast of dramatic results in digestion, the reduction of belly flab, improved skin and increased energy. My experience is that the process is helpful, though perhaps not as miraculous as some--mainly those selling products--would have us believe.

Instructions

1. Choose the product you are going to use. There are many popular and less well-known colon cleansing products. Some, like Colonix, offer a complete treatment that includes fiber, teas and pills. Others are more simple, basically something to be mixed in liquid. Others are solely organically grown herbs. Trader Joe's offers an inexpensive program that is easy to use.

2. Rid your diet of processed foods, chocolate and, if you can, caffeine. Start drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day, especially water and fruit juices.

3. Begin taking the colon cleansing products, mixed with a steady regimen of fluids. Dehydration is the most common problem associated with those who do colon cleansing.

4. Organize your schedule to allow more time in the morning for bowel movements. Wake up an hour earlier than normal and drink fruit juice instead of coffee.

5. Gradually increase your doses. Most products give guidelines that call for a heavy dose after the first week or two. Follow these carefully.

6. Monitor the changes to your body while taking the colon cleansers. You should see improved skin, a flatter stomach and increased energy.
