If you're having serious problems with your shoulder joint, including pain and restricted movement, your doctor may diagnose your rotator cuff as the problem. One of the most effective ways to treat rotator cuff problems is through surgery. You need to know have a rotator cuff surgery consultation to find out the best way to proceed.

Instructions

Consult With a Surgeon About Rotator Cuff Surgery

1. Ask your doctor for several orthopedic surgeons in the area. You'll likely want to get a consultation with several surgeons before you decide on one. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons can be a good place to find a surgeon too (see Resources below).

2. Make a list of questions to ask at your consultation. You'll want to ask general questions about how long the surgeon has been practicing, what types of rotator cuff surgery she performs and what you can expect as a result of your surgery.

3. Talk to the surgeon about the types of anesthesia he uses. Be aware that people who have heart disease, high blood pressure or are diabetic can have a higher risk of side effects due to anesthesia. Talk to the surgeon about whether general or local anesthesia will be required.

4. Find out if the surgeon recommends arthroscopic surgery or open incision surgery. These two types of surgeries have different costs and recovery times. Ask which one is best for your situation.

5. Ask your surgeon if she knows any excellent physical therapists. You'll be in physical therapy for up to 2 months after surgery. If the surgeon knows several therapists, you can have a consultation with each of them before your surgery as well.

6. Talk about how you will benefit after surgery. Your surgeon should be able to tell you if your rotator cuff problems will likely go away completely after surgery or if there is a chance that they will reoccur.
