Does Eating Avocado Do Good Things For Hair And Skin

The avocado is a healthy fruit.

There are many health benefits from eating avocados, including healthy skin and hair. Applying the avocado in a mask is an excellent treatment for dry skin or damaged hair.

Avocado Nutrients

Avocado masks are used in facial treatments.

Avocados are a naturally "nutrient dense" food. According to avocado.org, "Nutrient density is a measure of the amount of nutrients a food contains in comparison to the number of calories." Nutrients found in avocados include vitamin E, vitamin C, lutein and several B vitamins--folate, B6, pantothenic acid, riboflavin and niacin, all of which have been shown to be good for hair and skin.

Word of Caution

Avocados offer beauty and health benefits.

Eating avocados is a heart-healthy way to improve skin and hair. However, avocado hair and beauty masks are not meant for people with oily skin and hair. The benefits from applying the fruit to the hair and skin come from the avocado oil that moisturizes the hair and skin.

Avocado Mask

To create an avocado mask for use on the face or hair, combine one avocado, chopped, one egg yolk and one tablespoon of olive oil in a bowl. Mash the ingredients together well with a fork until smooth. For a facial mask, apply the mixture to a clean face and let it set for 10 minutes. Rinse and remove the mask. For a hair mask, apply the mixture to damp hair. Massage the mixture into the scalp. Cover the hair with a plastic cap and apply heat with a hair dryer for 20 minutes. Rinse the mixture from your hair.
