Hormone Replacement Medications

At one time, hormone replacement therapy was regularly given to women in menopause to help them manage their symptoms. During menopause, the body decreases its production of estrogen and progesterone. This change in the level of hormones can cause many symptoms. Then, in 2002, the Woman's Health Initiative clinical trial found that there were many health risks associated with taking hormone replacement therapy. It is now important to weigh the risks versus the benefits of these medication. Below is some basic information on the types of medications available.

Estrogen Therapy

In some cases, estrogen is prescribed alone. It is most effective at reducing hot flashes. This type of hormone replacement therapy increases your risk of uterine cancer.

Estrogen Progestin Combination Therapy

In women who have not had a hysterectomy, a combination of estrogen and progestin is usually prescribed. The progestin helps to lower the risk of uterine cancer.

Forms of Estrogen

Estrogen alone can be found in pill form, patches, vaginal creams, rings or tablets. The form of estrogen you take depends upon the symptoms you are experiencing, and this should be discussed with your physician.

Forms of Estrogen Progestin Combination Therapy

Combination hormone replacement therapy is usually taken in pill form. It is also available in a patch.

Medication Schedules

Hormone replacement therapy that is taken in pill form is usually taken daily. Skin patches are worn continuously and need to be changed about every 2 weeks. With tablets, rings and creams, the medication enters the bloodstream faster. They are usually used daily for about 2 weeks and then just twice per week.

Minor Side Effects

Side effects from hormone replacement therapy can be minor and include headaches, nausea and breast pain and tenderness. Side effects can also be more severe.

Serious Side Effects

Hormone replacement therapy can increase your risk of blood clots in the legs or lungs, breast cancer and heart disease. Abnormal vaginal bleeding and higher risk of stroke may also occur.
