Natural Substances To Help Restless Leg Syndrone

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a chronic condition that causes pain or discomfort in the legs and often in the arms and trunk. Though RLS is among the most common of all the movement disorders, it not only remains under-diagnosed but also under-treated. Nearly one person in twenty is afflicted with RLS. The disease commonly occurs after the age of 50. A number of natural substances like herbs can help in relieving the symptoms of RLS.

California Poppy with Corydalis

California poppy is prepared with a Corydalis formula and it reduces muscle spasms and relieves associated pain. It also induces sleep.

Kava

The kava herb comes in tablet form and it helps in relaxing skeletal muscles. It works for RLS by sedating the central nervous system.

Passionflower

Passionflower can be found in tea bag form and is recommended to take one cup a couple of hours before bedtime to induce sleepiness and muscle relaxation.

Rooibos

Rooibos is also a tea that induces sleep and reduces muscle spasms common in RLS. It also helps to reduce general pain and inflammation.

Schisandra

Schisandra is sold in tincture form and is recommended to take one teaspoon in one-quarter cup of water three time a day.

Ginkgo Biloba

The extract of ginkgo biloba, 60 mg up to three times daily, is recommended for RLS. A couple of other useful herbs are butcher's broom and horse chestnut to be taken as directed on the labels.

Diet and Nutrition

Diet and nutrition is also seen to be an essential natural remedy for RLS. Caffeine is not recommended in food or drink because even though it does temporarily relieve the discomfort associated with RLS, the symptoms rebound when it is discontinued. RLS is also associated with hypoglycemia, which is low blood sugar or low blood glucose where blood sugar levels drop below normal. It is common for low blood sugar levels to occur after consuming large amounts of sugar. Therefore it helps to eat a sugar-free, high protein meal at night as this can greatly reduce the episodes of RLS and associated cramping at night. It is also advised to include starch with whatever sugar is eaten so that adequate blood sugar levels are maintained during the night.
