Common Types Of Steroids

There are three main types of steroids: anabolic, androgenic and cortico steroids. Anabolic and androgenic steroids are "synthetically produced variants of the naturally occurring male hormone testosterone," according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Cortico steroids mimic a group of cortisol hormones that occur naturally in the body.

Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic steroids are commonly used to build muscle mass and reduce body fat. These steroids are a chemical derivative of the naturally-occurring male hormone testosterone.

Popular Anabolic Steroids

The most popular anabolic steroids are Deca Durabolin, Sustanon, Winstrol and Dianabol tablets.

Androgenic Steroids

Androgenic steroids develop secondary male characteristics, such as the deepening of the voice. Thickening of nonreproductive tract tissues, such as bones, the larynx and vocal chords, also occurs. A decrease in body fat is seen with the use of androgenic steroids, too.

Popular Androgenic Steroids

Equipoise, Anadrol and Oxandrin are common androgenic steroids.

Cortico Steroids

Cortico steroids are steroids that imitate the effect of Cortisone-like hormones in the body. These hormones help to regulate inflammation. Cortico steroids are different from anabolic and androgenic steroids as they are used in the treatment of bodily ailments.

Common Cortico Steroids

Common cortico steroids are Prednisolone, Hydrocortisone and Triamcinolone.
