Sambucol is a drug made from the elderberry shrub (Sambucus nigra) that is an effective natural remedy for the flu. It may also be useful in treating a wide range of other illnesses, but this has not yet been confirmed.
Benefit
Sambucol works by increasing your body's production of cytokines, which are chemicals that play an important role in your body's response to disease. Thus, Sambucol makes your body better able to respond to diseases.
Flu
Sambucol is most effective against the flu. In a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 1995, taking Samubcol was shown to reduce the time that people suffered from the flu by half.
Colds
The elderberry shrub has traditionally been used to treat colds as well as the flu. While Sambucol has not been tested with colds, it may reduce the length of symptoms.
AIDS
Because Sambucol boosts the immune system and it's antiviral properties, it may be effective in treating AIDS.
Cancer
Sambucol may also be useful in treating cancer patients along with chemotherapy or other treatments, but more tests are necessary to say for sure.
