Determine Points For Weight Loss

The Weight Watchers weight-loss program has proven to be an effective method of weight loss for people across the country. The Weight Watchers program encourages participants to attend weekly meetings, and it allows the flexibility to lose weight either by counting "points" or through a "core" plan. (Ref. 1.) If you have decided to join the Weight Watchers points plan, there are several easy steps you can take to determine how many points you will be allotted each day in order to lose weight.

Instructions

1. Determine your points allotted for gender. If you are male, give yourself eight points. If you are female, give yourself two points. If you are a nursing mother, give yourself 12 points.

2. Determine your points allotted for your age group. If you are 17 to 26 years old, give yourself four points. If you are 27 to 37, give yourself three points. If you are 38 to 47, give yourself two points. If you are 48-58, give yourself one point. If you happen to be over 58 years of age, do not give yourself any points for this section.

3. Determine your points allotted based on your current weight. This is done by using the first two numbers of your weight. For example, if you weigh 165 pounds, you would allot yourself 16 points for this section.

4. Determine your points allotted based on your height. If you are less than 5' tall, don't give yourself any points. If you are 5'1 to 5'10, give yourself one point. If you are over 5'10, give yourself two points.

5. Determine your points allotted based on your physical activity. If you are almost completely sedentary, don't give yourself any points. If you are mostly sedentary, give yourself two points. If you are fairly active, give yourself four points. If you are very active, give yourself six points.

6. Add up the points calculated in steps 1 through 5. This will give you the number of points needed for weight loss on the Weight Watchers program.

7. These points will determine the foods and quantities of foods that you can eat. Each food has a specific allocation of points based on calories, fat, and grams of fiber. To learn the point value for each food, check out the Weight Watchers points calculator. (Ref. 2.)
