Hip Resurfacing Recovery Time

Hip resurfacing is an alternative to hip replacement and does not replace the ball of the hip. The damaged portion of the hip is reshaped, then capped with a prosthesis made of metal. Recovering from this procedure usually takes from six weeks to three months.

Hospital

After the surgery you will be taken into a recovery room for observation. You will be monitored for your blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and respiration. The nurse will focus on your circulation and make sure that you maintain sensitivity in your legs and feet. You should be transferred to a room after you are stable.

Pain

It is normal to have some pain after a surgery. You will most likely be given pain medication. Pain should subside in the weeks after the hip resurfacing surgery. You should speak with your physician immediately if you feel unsteady, have a constant pain or pressure or are unable to bear weight.

Rehab

You will probably be using a cane or crutches for approximately six weeks after the surgery. It is important to avoid bending your hip or waist during the rehabilitation period. A physical therapist will work with you while you are still in the hospital to help you learn to climb stairs and get in and out of a bed, chair and car with your temporarily limited mobility. It is important to learn do these daily activities to reduce the possibility of injury to the hip. You will also need to engage in physical therapy to regain your strength and mobility.

Tips

Wearing TED (thromboembolic deterrent) hose can help decrease swelling and prevent blood clots. Continue the exercise program that you have learned at the hospital and walk regularly to improve your strength.

Warning

Avoid high-impact activities like running or jumping to help your bones heal. Remember that the newly implanted metal piece can fail, break or loosen.

Time Frame

According to the University of Wisconsin Hospital, hip resurfacing recovery normally takes between six weeks and three months, but rehabilitation is necessary to encourage recovery.
