Improve Driving Skills
If you've been racking up the moving violations or getting into repeated fender benders, improve your driving skills for your safety and that of your passengers and other motorists. Brush up on the basics to feel more confident behind the wheel.
Instructions
1. Take lessons at a state-licensed driving school with instructors certified by agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles, the American Automobile Association or the National Safety Council. Tell the instructor you need a refresher course on basics (like accelerating, turning, braking and parallel parking) and driver safety skills.
2. Study current traffic safety laws to ensure you're following the rules for on-the-road fundamentals like the right of way, changing lanes, 3-point turns, 4-way stops, yielding and safe following distance.
3. Be aware of what's going on around you at all times when you're behind the wheel. Keep your eyes moving and use your mirrors to gauge upcoming traffic, prepare for turns and watch for pedestrians. Be extra careful in construction and school zones.
4. Reduce your speed. When driving too fast, you're less likely to exercise safe driving basics, notice hazards and remember proper safety maneuvers. Be aware of your speed even more at night and when it's foggy, raining or snowing.
5. Eliminate distractions that affect your ability to concentrate like putting on makeup, reading the paper or talking on the cell phone and to other passengers. Also turn off the radio as you make your way through challenging driving conditions.
6. Get your vision checked to ensure you're able to read traffic signs, see stoplights and drive safely at night.
