Causes Of Deafness In Babies

Deafness in babies may occur before birth as the result of a hereditary disorder or infection in the mother, or after birth due to infections of the ear or brain. Signs of hearing loss in babies include not responding to a loud noise, not reacting when being talked to and not vocalizing. Some causes of deafness in babies such as infections are preventable through vaccinations of the mother or baby or by treatment with antibiotics.

Otitis Media

Severe or recurrent middle ear infections (otitis media) can cause hearing damage, including deafness, in babies.

Rubella

If a pregnant woman is infected with rubella during the first trimester of pregnancy, the baby may be born with birth defects including deafness.

Syphilis

Pregnant women infected with syphilis that is not treated can spread the infection to their unborn babies, who may develop deafness.

Meningitis

Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord that can occur after birth from bacterial or viral infections and result in deafness.

Low Birth Weight

According to the National Library of Medicine, babies born with a low birth weight may have complications, including hearing loss.

Family History

Deafness in babies may be caused by a hereditary disorder of the auditory nerves or internal structure of the ear.

Down's Syndrome

Down's syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that can cause birth defects including hearing loss, heart disease and mental retardation.
